SVI returns for senior year • May 25, 2017 11:53 AM

How does this team replace Frank's refuse to lose mentality that was responsible for so much of last year's success? It doubt it will be from Devonte, who has tended to passively float through entire halves of games. Who will be the dog? Maybe Devonte will step up. I hope so. As always, I'm excited for the next season and I look forward to reading everyone's posts. RCJH

I don't see the Mason/Josh (TRob had it too) hate to lose mentality in anyone on next year's team. And, I mean, all players don't like to lose obviously but I'm talking about that next level crazy. Who steps up in crunch time and gets buckets? I think it's impossible to know at this time.

Now The Real Fun Begins: May Rotation Talk • May 25, 2017 11:46 AM

So the roster has now been finalized.

I think Svi returning is bad news for Garrett's playing time. Garrett now goes down to 5th guard to start the season with Cunliffe likely working his way into the line-up when eligible. So Garrett now seems like the odd man out, with the caveat that if he can handle the ball at this level immediately he becomes invaluable as the off-guard when Graham or Newman takes a breather.

Graham and Newman will be minute sinks. I imagine both will be 32+ mpg. Maybe a little higher. One needs to be on the floor at all times.

Who starts between Svi and Vick? I don't think it matters much. They should both pull over 20 mpg and be key players.

Cunliffe is an athlete (Garrett is too, but he's also a basketball player) and Self seems to love him. I'm ready for Jamari frustration here. But fortunately it's 5th guard frustration and not primary back-up/5star not playing.

The post situation is clear by necessity, but it could be a bumpy ride.

Doke will play as many minutes as he can handle, hopefully 30 but it wouldn't surprise me if he ended up closer to 25 due to foul trouble.

Preston should start at the 4. Will Self try to make him bang and potentially have another Bragg situation? Or will he let Preston roam/drift around? The other possibility is that Preston buys in completely and is everything we hoped Bragg would be.

Whitman is the back-up to both post positions. I think ideally he is a 10-15 minute guy, but in match-ups where Self wants to stay big I think we are looking at 20 minutes or so from William and Mary's back-up center.

Lightfoot would have to improve rapidly to play outside of garbage time. I think in foul trouble situations in tight, pressure games Self goes small over playing Mitch. My guess is when we check at the end of the year his minutes will be similar to Chris Teahan's minutes...

Looks like another guard oriented team to me. Hopefully Preston is great because I think he is a big key. Doke and Whitman are both DUNK IT/OH GOD PLEASE DON'T SHOOT THAT 10' JUMPER guys. In situations when they are both in there, opposing teams are likely to pack the paint. Thankfully this roster has the shooters to make teams pay for that. Graham/Newman/Svi are all fabulous shooters. Even in Newman's pretty bad FR year at MSST he shot 38% from three. I think Self will get the best out of Newman. He is a very good shooter, he was just trying way too hard to create his own shot at MSST. This is my one worry for this team, that neither Graham or Newman are great creators. We will see. But yeah in addition to that Vick is a pretty good shooter too. I'm not sold on Cunliffe but he's the 5th guard so it's not a huge deal.

Excellent. I see him splitting time at the 3 and the 4.

Yeah, K's back would have really been flaring up.

Grimes does like UK. I think taking Moore made Dotson reconsider a bit. KU definitely in play for both though. As well as Jalen Carey, who I am a big fan of.

KU lock is the word and that it is known in AAU and recruiting circles. He might take a couple other visits just to soak up the atmosphere. He also may verbal early, like before his SR year early.

Jeremiah Robinson-Earl. 4* PF from KC area. Top 50 type talent.

Rumour that JRE to KU is done and "known in AAU circles".

Diallo of Kentucky is returning. This will make the Svi decision even more sickening if he stays in

What in the world. Well, I don't think he honestly changes much for UK, slightly more depth but he is an ultrabricker.

Nope. Shaka is still their HC. He is a schmuck.

@JayHawkFanToo

I'm not high on Coleman, esp as a frosh.

Jones returning would definitely put them in should finish top 3 territory.

Shaka is definitely bringing in a lot of talent but like you I don't think he will do great with it.

Shaka still has a lot to prove in the conference. So a 1yr freshman center leaves TX for the pros, now to be replaced with another 1yr freshman center. How has balance changed?

Nothing has changed. Texas will be middle of the pack probably.

L.J. Figueroa, a Top-100 SG (110 composite on 247) has asked out of his LOI from New Mexico St. Chose NM St over Miami, Louisville among others. He enrolled early at NM St as well. If he gets his release maybe he's an option when we find of Svi's decision next week.

Idk we have a lot of wings already. Not sure how he would fit into the equation.

@justanotherfan Stevens is such an analytics guy I'm sure his head is about to explode.. Bron in the playoffs is a different animal. He goes 75% all regular season. You can't stop 100% Bron. No matter what stats or game plan you have. Just have to hope that Kyrie and Love BOTH get hurt and it becomes a 1 on 5 game.

I actually think this Clevland team might have a chance to beat anyone without Kyrie or Love. Their bench is stacked. Korver, Deron Williams, Derick Williams, Channing Frye, Richard Jefferson, and Iman Shumpert. They have a solid backup PG, SG and PF. Derick Williams, Channing and Jefferson could hold down the fort for a series if Thompson and Love were both hurt somehow. This is the best roster in the league.

Yes.

Lebron has shown he can drag corpses to a title before. Also those REALLY bad Cleveland teams to the finals even though he couldn't quite push through with them. That was before he totally flipped the switch too.

NBA playoffs • May 19, 2017 01:53 AM

Feed me your hate Lebron haters.

NBA playoffs • May 18, 2017 08:10 PM

Lebron since game 5 of last year's NBA finals has been on another level. He couldn't possibly think too highly of himself. He has OWNED the league.

Yeah the league badly needs more talent.

I believe I posted that I wasn't interested. Don't want to dig around for the posts though. I'd certainly much rather have Dedric Lawson.

Honestly, I thought we would see a Duke or UK superteam overpower their way to another championship season. But not the case... At least it appears that way. Duke without a solid post depth or a starting 5, really puts them in a bind. Still a top 5 team in my mind though.

UK missing perimeter depth will hurt. Also a lack of shooting ability. I think they are going to have some post controversy and have to play a guy like Gabriel out of position some. Bamba wouldn't have changed my opinion of them. They WILL have to play a slow paced game, much like they did with the 36-1 team, but with less talent. They don't have the same kind of depth. And certainly not a shooter like Booker.

UK might have to play Baker just to have someone that can shoot. Masking him on D shouldn't be too hard with what they have at other positions.

I'm not scared of either UK or Duke this year.

Both are top 10-ish. Duke has talent but is thin and super young outside of tripper.

2018 Recruiting Thread • May 18, 2017 04:24 PM

Kcmatt7 said:

@BShark Well I thought he would pick Duke personally.

But UK was crowded and Duke at least has minor competition for PT. Texas he will get to play as many minutes as possible and grow. Shaka has also gotten 2 guys drafted the past two years. One of them being a complete surprise in Ibeh after Ridley went down.

UT now at least a dark horse in the B12 depending on how good the freshies can all be.

He consistently mentioned how much he liked Shaka iirc. And yeah, it is also the path of least resistance.

2018 Draft is going to have some real potential in it as well. Shaping up to be another good one IMO.

I don't see Vick, Doke, Newman or Preston listed on Draftxpress. Draft.net has Vick 1st round and Preston, Newman Svi 2nd.. With all these guys playing major roles on next years squad I think that will chance a bit

I think all could be gone. Newman and Preston extremely likely. I think Doke wants to as well, but his position is a dying breed in the NBA and if he doesn't get great feedback maybe he stays?

Transfer talk • May 18, 2017 04:20 PM

Exactly and he's not the type Self usually likes anyway. He's very good inside the arc but doesn't shoot from the perimeter much and doesn't make it part of his game.. He went through a recent game in AAU without attempting a single jumpshot

Sounds like a great fit for Calipari. He loves guards that can't shoot.

Not surprising but thanks for the update.

@BeddieKU23

UK extremely likely to offer too. Not putting any thought into him coming to KU.

MD just got punched in the nads. Prentiss Hubb committed to Notre Dame.

I guess it is KU tradition to miss your PG targets. Rough for Turg.

Not much new on the KU front. Looks like 247 did a player ranking update today?

Israel Barnes and Aaron Wiggins are both in the 80s.

Tevin Mack to Alabama.

Not sure if it was mentioned yet. Chase Jeter is transferring to Arizona. I thought the point of leaving Duke was to get PT. LOL

Transfer talk • May 17, 2017 02:25 PM

@BeddieKU23

At this point I think it would have to be one of the best options. Can't imagine there is a good 2017 HS option.

Keegan's Bluff • May 17, 2017 02:23 PM

WSU is def a top 10 team. They return everyone.

And yeah @BeddieKU23 Duke and UK will crawl up the rankings. I'm going to wait and see with both. Duke = Tripper and the Frosh. Duval can't shoot which is a detriment for playing at Duke. They have pieces but are super Young. UK looks like they have the same issue again, not enough shooters. They sure do have a lot of wings/combo forwards though. They could be a nightmare defensively if they lock in, but with so many FR that may not be consistent game to game.

Transfer talk • May 17, 2017 02:18 PM

I think he'd be fine as a short 4. Leaves Whitman to play back-up C.

Keegan's Bluff • May 17, 2017 12:31 PM

Not top 5? lol please Keegan

UNC/MSU/AZ/KU

That's the top 4 EVERYONE should have and I think it's mostly interchangeable.

A graduate transfer that hasn't announced his intentions or finding something on the International pool could be an option.

Some New future names • May 17, 2017 12:26 PM
