Friday's Home Opener- A Possible Letdown? • Nov 17, 2016 02:45 PM

Self does a really good job at getting the better teams from these small conferences. Something I feel is underrated. Siena is I think actually a top 75 Kenpom team (ranked higher than anyone on KSuck's schedule that isn't Maryland by a LOT).

I was thinking the same thing, maybe a slow start then coast to victory late.

@Texas-Hawk-10 I like the T-shirt fan explanation for the millions of (insufferable) Notre Dame fans inflicted on us nationally every year, enabled by NBC (becoming NDC during football season).

I'm really enjoying ND's current football season.

@chriz here is a typical comment from the skeptics on the LDJ article when he signed: "Self lands a former Towson commit with no other major offers? What the heck has happened to Self on the recruiting trail? Not happy with this commit. Looks like a Milt Doyle Part 2.0."

Now, of course, we knew all along what he would do!

Complaining about the 2013 recruiting class. Feelsbadman. Comment sections in general are pretty bad but, good find.

Rest in peace young fella.

As far as KU comps go, he is kind of like a king's version of Tyshawn Taylor.

Fair observation. I have no idea how many of them were actual Duke grads and I wasn't going to ask. You are right though, any big time program is going to have lots of tshirt fans. Most Kentucky basketball fans are also Bama football fans after all.

KSU's fanbase is mostly terrible, Missouri's is all terrible imo.

Any player, specifically Duval and Preston, who plays overseas will be 100% because of academics and nothing else. No high profile player has ever gone overseas voluntarily they've all done so because they didn't qualify academically. Spots in Europe are limited to 3 American born players and those teams use those spots on proven players, not HS kids who may or may not be emotionally ready to live in a foreign country.

Rack this guy. Ferguson would be playing for Zona if he were eligible.

@Ralph said:

@Texas-Hawk-10 they both maybe in the same academic hell as Terrance Ferguson was.

It would take a miracle with Preston. However, KU has worked miracles before.

The begining of the end • Nov 17, 2016 02:11 AM

I was once guilty myself of saying Self was too rigid. Ha. That said I do think this is out of necessity. Given the choice and the roster, Self still would prefer his way.

HIDE YO KIDZ! KU DUKE LIVE CHAT • Nov 17, 2016 02:10 AM

Duke fans are mostly terrible. After many pleasant encounters online before and after the game with Indiana fans I must say it's been the complete opposite with Duke fans. They are such pompous windbags. Befitting of their coach I suppose. Mini-rant over.

LOL

Random musing: 56-35. The margin after it was 15-6 Duke to get to 62-50 KU. The potential of this team is pretty high.

One other interesting thing from the game is the fact that all the foul trouble didn't lead to a single minute by Coleby in ether game, which is kinda surprising that he doesn't play over lightfoot just off of his experience, but i think he may not be 100% yet.

Saw it coming from the exhibitions. He is not ready yet and Self doesn't trust him one bit.

@BShark because of our upcoming schedule, Dok needs to play at least 20 minutes a game. He just needs more experience to get a feel for how to play around the basket. Self said he has a nice hook shot, so hopefully he'll be able to show that on Friday.

Agree. Should be able to get him minutes and let Lucas rest up.

I feel like Duval will likely get eligible but it's all about the $ so he may just go overseas anyway. He is one I feel like if he announces for KU, then he will suit up. However, it's dragging out DEEP into the spring with Duval.

You forgot the father of flopping Marcus Smart who learned from Shane Battier. When I saw Jeter falling to the ground and then crying after I immediately thought he had been watching Shane video's

K will be retired by the time Smart is out of the league I think. Unless he perfects some kind of anti-aging technology. Or has clones.

My god Battier...I had forgotten about him lol.

@BeddieKU23 said:

@chriz

They mess with the Charge rule so much I don't even know what is a charge anymore. No defensive player should be awarded a charge for stepping in front of a player making a basketball play. How many flops did Jeter attempt last night at near 7f tall!!!!!

And what are charge calls called on guys who freaking pass the ball to someone? Got to be the most pointless call you can make in a game. I think we saw at least 3-4 of those last night. I guess officiating is just called how they see these days

K coaches flopping. Pretty sure he's gonna call up Manu when he finally retires and get him on the staff as the Professor of Flopping. Maybe he could even get ahold of Vlade Divac.

Do we know if Allen properly recovered from his wounded pride yet?

Love the discussion everyone. Keep it going.

Wins especially against Duke on the big stage are nothing but positive for this program. Especially after ESPN ran a headline that said College Basketball was Duke & Kentucky and everyone else. Funny, guys maybe they should have waited until today to run that story.

Yep. ESPN can taste it.

Even if Preston signs an NLI, I'll believe it when he runs out there in a KU jersey against Hays/Pitt. I do think he announces for KU soon though.

Oh and the need for Preston is because the staff went ALL-IN on Ayton and missed. Possible Preston doesn't even visit if Ayton pops for KU. It's where we are at now though, and Preston would be a good player for KU.

If Udoka develops offensive moves and becomes a reliable scorer inside, we are talking potential NPOY. Could happen his 3rd or 4th year if he sticks around.

@approxinfinity said:

One thing nobody mentioned is that Kennard was able to get midrange jumpshots at will around the foul line. I don't know if that was just a match up thing, but other than a couple rim runs early on, those midrange jumpers was the only reliable penetration Duke had against us. I wonder if his ability to get that shot resulted in a half time adjustment of Self having the guards double down on cutters, leaving wing 3s wide open with Frank trying to close back out.

Self wanted the team to guard the 3 pt line, which they did. !two-cents-DrBDFV-clipart.jpg ↗

He will play. However, all the schools recruiting him knew the risks. This is a kid that blew out EACH knee in HS in separate years. He is a transcendent talent, but he may never truly get to show it.

The media will say what they want anyway and 50% of the time they will be wrong...or 100% in politics. 😎

They might have had 3 players missing but the refs more than made up for that, don't you think?

Also what are the odds KU would shoot 2-17 from three again. Not high I'd wager.

The fourth guy was Sean Obi. He was there last year, but didn't play much.

Yeah. Once they get everyone healthy Obi isn't playing anyway.

Really makes you wonder what happened.

Lonnie Walker to.... • Nov 16, 2016 03:54 PM

Miami???? Weird class.

Agree. Only thing that can change that is Bragg getting it together. But right now Bragg fouls too much and is an inconsistent scorer.

@BeddieKU23

Solid points. He definitely needs to keep it under control. He could have been headed for a legendary half without those boneheaded fouls right or wrong from the refs.

This was still just game 2 with Josh of course (sorry Washburn and ESU you do not count) and now we have a bunch of rummies lined up for him to continue to find his way in the college game.

Self's Strategy for Beating Duke • Nov 16, 2016 02:46 PM

I think Self could get away with resting him until Stanford (unless he was all healed up before then of course).

@BeddieKU23

Nice thread.

I think this is a sign of things to come with Josh.

To answer your opening question... No. It's ridiculous. It's not basketball.

Honestly all the games leading up to the start of conference play should be Ws, but there will probably be a bad loss that shouldn't have been in there.

We beat Dook, the number 1 team in the country. We shot horribly from the 3, and couldn't hit a free throw to save our lives. But we rebounded the ball, and played good defense. Tidbits:

  • LL is injured. Hurt. Give him the Siena game off..let him heal up.

  • Devonte is not 100%. Rehydration takes some time. He was used as a decoy the last 5 minutes of the game.

  • We saw flashes of the JJ show, and I have to say...it's quite a show. I think we have a beast on our hands.

  • Doke is going to make quite an impact on this team down the road this year. The passion he plays with is infectious. 12 boards...nice.

  • Carlton is making a comeback...love the jumper he nailed...love seeing him playing the 5 ( I thot he played well with the small lineup),

The game bodes very well for our future. 15 games from now, we'll look to this game as a launching pad.

Definitely agree RE: Lucas. Pretty much the rest too. Not sure on Bragg, he still seems like a hot mess atm.
