@KirkIsMyHinrich

The Wizards seem content to keep Otto Porter's ridiculous contract. They had Oubre on the cheap and were giving him big minutes here and there. Puzzling for sure but looks like that whole organization is a mess as well. I agree he won't be a Sun past this year. I hope a playoff team picks him up

@BeddieKU23 Last year silvio rides in late and ultimately was a game changer. Two years in a row? Someone get the white horse dome oats!!!

For comparison sake Silvio was a much better HS prospect then Ochai was. Ochai came on the scene late and seemed to figure things out his Sr year but he didn't do much on the AAU circuit.

Silvio was a Top 10 player earlier in his HS career and was a fixture on the AAU scene and played for his national team so experience wise Silvio was ready to come to KU and impact the game. That's why I'm hesitant to say Ochai can impact the team the same way. But we're almost half way through the season and the options on this team are underperforming big time and its well worth a shot to see how this kid reacts to the big stage. You just never know until you put them out there how they will react. If he's got poise and toughness and can do some things we're really lacking (perimeter shooting) I think this move turns out to be the right one. I hope he gets his chance tonight

Adidas Trial & other Plea Deals • Jan 09, 2019 12:06 PM

@truehawk93

I get the blame game but in the end Self and the KU program are ultimately responsible for the mess that has happened. KU has done a very poor job of vetting recruits. It's not coincidence anymore that Selby, Alexander, Diallo, Preston & De Sousa all had their eligibility poked and prodded over. We looked the other way because they were good at basketball. Other top programs don't risk it. I'm not saying those same programs don't have issues/ have had similar issues, they do. One issue I can live with, but 5.. That's a problem. We let TJ Gassnola around our basketball program and coaches, potential recruits/players, a man who very likely is going to jail.

Did the NCAA ultimately create this kind of environment? Absolutely...however we chose to dig our feet into it and play the game. That may have been the only way to stay at the level KU is at but it was a choice.

I do believe Silvio should be allowed to play. The rules do not fit modern times. They do not make common sense. We've seen enough eligibility investigations to know something isn't right with this whole process. I don't know what else to say here that hasn't already been said. I feel for Silvio and if he's truly innocent in this whole thing it makes it worse. Somewhere the truth lies.

KU following a loss under Bill Self • Jan 09, 2019 11:42 AM

@Fightsongwriter

at home they looked good. Their starting 5 isn't bad but Makai Mason has to have 25 point nights like he did for them to look decent.

When KU plays Baylor we will have to pray we can make perimeter shots. But Self usually has a way of getting under Drew's skin anyway so maybe worrying about nothing

Ochai • Jan 09, 2019 11:33 AM

Usually in situations like this I'm defensive about what kind of impact this will have however I have a gut feeling its going to work out. There's a few reasons I think this is happening. First and the most obvious is Bill is going small. No way he can sustain the 4 guard lineup with what he has right now. He needs the extra guard depth. The 2nd is I think Self saw something in Ochai from the time he offered him a scholarship that he believes Ochai can help this team. Statistically he might not be the savior immediately but from the things they said about him when they signed him Ochai seemed to have that competitive streak and toughness about him that Self seems to covet in his players. It's clearly lacking from some on this team. I'm not trying to put expectations on him but something about this whole thing leads me to believe 5-6 games from now if he's a regular part of the rotation we are going to see an impact.

I know some may think this is desperation, maybe it is, Self is down 1 starter for the year and a 2nd seems very unlikely to play as well. I know Ryan on the phog is not buying this being anything impactful but I do think he's judging the cover before he reads the book a bit here too. Self always finds a way. Silvio saved last season. It's been done before. Ochai doesn't have the name reputation but he must have been pretty darn good last year to get on KU's radar so late. It's not like he didn't have other Power 5 scholarship offers. He's athletic and can shoot, if he can do both of those things that's a plus in my book. I say give it some time but I'm very optimistic about this decision

Ochai • Jan 09, 2019 01:06 AM

I say start him. We are at home where he would likely play better. See what you got in the first 4 minutes or so. See if he is the spark we need

Nothing to lose giving him a chance based on what we have seen from other options

We looked baddd Saturday but hopefully that lit a fire under some guys and getting back home will help that. Have to think we see a different team then we saw Saturday despite the big loss of Doke.

Doke • Jan 08, 2019 02:08 PM

@AsadZ

I think he can do both of those things well. He does have some offensive skill that we'll see as he gets more comfortable. There's no way to expect he can match Doke's production but I'm hopeful he can help this team going forward. I'm sure his mindset is going to change now that expectations will be placed on him to produce. Silvio did well last season when called upon. I'm hopeful Mitch and Dave can do the same now

Adidas Trial & other Plea Deals • Jan 08, 2019 02:05 PM

@Gorilla72

I believe the NCAA will have access to that info. They also changed the rules on how the FBI's information could be used in any case the NCAA has against a player/team etc.

Doke • Jan 08, 2019 12:19 PM

Doke is still 19 years old so a year isn't going to effect him. Just look at the latest mock draft, Doke is younger then half of the projected first round picks and he's a Junior.

If he's going to miss all the pre-draft festivities then what choice does he really have. 1 year away from a degree and being in a position to better himself no matter what his basketball career has in fold for him. I wonder where his mind will be in regards to this whole thing. He can come back and be a Senior Leader and get treated like royalty or he can try his luck professionally. If he wants the NBA proving he can stay healthy for a year could do wonders but after this injury there will be concerns with him going forward. His body might not be able to handle the rigors and grind of this game. We'll see. I hope if he comes back Hawks fans welcome him

As much as I think that's a possibility Preston didn't last long overseas, get drafted, or last long in the NBA for that matter. I think Silvio might be waiting to find out what his eligibility for next season would be before deciding on his future here.

Doke • Jan 07, 2019 06:38 PM

@Big-Clyde52

I think we're about to find out how much Dave can help us going forward. No question his role just expanded as much as Self will allow it. I think the expectation was Doke was going to leave after this year and Dave got a year to be groomed by a Veteran (Doke) so he'd be prepared to take over next season. We've seen flashes from Dave and he doesn't lack in effort or size so I'm optimistic he's got enough time now to carve a role with this team. He's got a lot of pressure now to produce because Dedric can't do it alone in the post and KU doesn't have the personnel to lean on a 4 guard lineup. Dave could literally be the key to the season.

Doke • Jan 07, 2019 06:35 PM

Doke • Jan 07, 2019 06:28 PM

Self and Ochai/parents have talked about removing his red-shirt since Doke's injury news. Can't see it happening though since he's been out with a stress fracture injury. He isn't exactly ready to contribute

I'm glad your feeling optimistic about Hurt. I hope we land him and I hope we sit in a better place then it looks currently. Who knows how much the trial will have an effect on his recruitment. Most ran from KU after which is no surprise. I don't think we'll know one way or the other until after the season with him though is my guess.

@BeddieKU23 That is my feelings exactly. If he continues to be this injury prone, a diploma would be worth a lot. Plus he could continue to be a part of the team, which he seems to enjoy. Even if it would be in a backup role, I would welcome him back. Can not have enough bigs, which we are finding out. A roster of Doke, DMac, and Mitch, would still be extremely thin, unless we can sign another power guy.

We need Dedric to come back and/or get Hurt on the roster, which I am not expecting.

A few things to add. If Doke returns and recovers from this injury he'd be Option #1 in the offense unless something crazy happened next season. He was option #1 this season when healthy so I would expect he'd start and be a focal point of the offense once again.

The injury certainly puts a cloud on his career here. He missed most his freshman year, he was healthy for most of his Soph year then wasn't 100% to end it, and now he's going to miss the bulk of his Jr year. Each season he has single handily changed the direction of KU's season. So if he returns will he get hurt again, that's the risk I guess and I get the concern of having him on the squad and wondering will he ever play a full season?

That's more a product of Hurt's recruitment being something he hasn't taken seriously until recently. We might have landed him if he announced during the summer. A lot has changed since then though.

Follow the visits- Kentucky, UNC. KU supposedly in February according to his last update. KU recently watched him play so they are still pursuing. If he officials we must knock it out of the park on/off the court with him.

2020 Recruiting • Jan 07, 2019 05:31 PM

KU has jumped into the mix for Matur Maker cousin of one-time KU prospect Thon Maker.

  1. What 2020 player has raised his stock the most and where does he stand in his recruitment?

This is an easy answer for me, seven-footer Makur Maker has put himself into the conversation of 2020’s most elite prospects and will push for the national top five next time we update rankings. The cousin of the Milwaukee Bucks' Thon Maker and former four-star big man Matur Maker, can do a little bit of everything. He’s got deep shooting range, can handle the ball, is becoming a shot blocker and presents nightmare matchup issues.

His recruitment is just starting to take off. UCLA had been making a major play and I assume whoever takes over will do so as well. USC and Oregon recently offered and Kansas just jumped in this week. He’ll have everybody in the country checking in.

2020 Recruiting • Jan 07, 2019 05:29 PM

Rivals with a Ty Berry update. Doesn't seem like a big priority for KU right now.

Ty Berry’s junior season, from a team perspective, hasn’t started the way he had hoped as Newton (Kan.) is off to a 2-4 start. However, the class of 2020 Rivals150 point guard is off to a pretty strong start personally, as he’s averaging 26 points, 5 assists and 5 rebounds per game through his first six games.

On the recruiting side, Berry has all the usual suspects in the Midwest coming after him. The junior mentioned Purdue, Wichita State, Iowa State, Oklahoma State, Kansas State, Kansas, Creighton, Nebraska, Iowa and Missouri as schools actively involved in recruiting him. He’s taken recent trips to Iowa, Iowa State, Kansas, Nebraska and Wichita State, and plans to see Creighton and Missouri soon.

IN HIS OWN WORDS
Berry broke down some of the programs who have been active in his recruitment.

Iowa: “I liked Iowa. It was cool. I had a good time. I liked the coaching staff a lot.”

Iowa State: “Iowa State was really cool, too. Coach (Steve) Prohm and his staff were really friendly and they just try to get good guys up there.”

Kansas: “I actually went up to Late Night at the Phog there. I mean, Kansas is Kansas. They are tough as always and a great program.”

Kansas State: “(Bruce Weber) came to some of our practices, so I’ve talked to him a little bit. He’s cool. They have definitely stepped up the last couple years.”

Nebraska: “I went there for a football game. It was cool. I like coach (Tim) Miles. He’s a cool dude. He has a lot of energy.”

Purdue: “They are a pretty tough team in the Big Ten every year. I haven’t been up there yet, but they’ve come to my school to see me. I’ve watched them a good bit this year. They play fast and smart and push the ball. I like that.”

RIVALS' REACTION
At this point in the process, Berry says he’s completely open to all the schools recruiting him and is nowhere near making a decision. This is one of those cases though where it’s probably wise to follow the visits. Both Iowa schools seem to be gaining a lot of traction with him, as well as Nebraska. Purdue is another school he spoke very highly of. Things can always change, but early on Berry looks like a player who could make it out of his home state of Kansas

Doke • Jan 07, 2019 05:23 PM

@jayballer73

I know we often forget that players have nothing to come back to school for but Doke could certainly come back and graduate and have a chance to end his Jawhawk career on a high note as so many others have done in the past. Right now it looks messy but leaving KU with a degree wouldn't be the worst thing for someone who came to this country to improve his quality of life.

Braun • Jan 07, 2019 05:20 PM

Bossi with a nice write up of Braun. Looks like he's getting better. Can't hurt that's for sure.

When four-star small forward Christian Braun earned an offer from and committed to Kansas after a big summer with MoKan Elite, there were some skeptics. It's only natural. Braun wasn't a big-name recruit and had just really started to take off so some Kansas fans, locals and observers nationally wondered if he would be able to be a legitimate contributor for the Jayhawks.

Personally, I didn't much question if Braun would be a contributor and I'm more sure than ever he will end up playing valuable minutes in Lawrence. I watched Braun on Saturday night at the 810 Varsity Shootout in Kansas City and the senior at Overland Park (Kans.) Blue Valley Northwest put on one of the best all-around displays I've seen during this high school season, going for 37 points, 11 rebounds and four assists.

Braun actually served as his team's point guard and while he won't be asked to do that in college, his ability to make plays for others with the pass and create shots off the dribble will serve him well. He shoots a pretty jump shot with range, he's been hitting the weights and he's plenty athletic. Defense at Kansas' level will be an adjustment and he'll have to fight for his time. But, I think Braun is going to find it and it wouldn't surprise me if he turned into a guy that starts for a few years.

If he can't shoot its tough to plug that into a team full of guys who can't shoot. Just having 1 guy that is known for being a poor shooter has changed how defenses play KU. He looks pretty good but I'd have to say hard pass if shooting is a concern

Doke • Jan 07, 2019 04:18 PM

@HighEliteMajor

What's interesting about how ISU attacked Dedric is the fact that gameplan was probably meant for Doke who's a poor passer in general.

Once Doke was out they gambled sticking with it on Dedric but it was really effective especially as the momentum of the game completely got away from KU the last few minutes of the first half and carried over.

Dedric looked frustrated by the physicality and the amount of bodies swiping at him. He certainly had his moments where he was able to impose his will but they never felt like plays that were going to bring KU back to win. We've seen Dedric make a lot of plays from the high post or initiating from the perimeter and I'll have to rewatch but that didn't feel like something we tried to do on Saturday. Rarely does Self get out-coached but Prohm was able to get the best of Bill Saturday.

Doke • Jan 07, 2019 03:37 PM

@jayballer73

It's not as if she didn't have a point though. The lack of athleticism on Dedric really showed Saturday. He struggled and the gameplan for ISU worked perfectly on him for the most part. Perimeter players must do a much better job putting the ball in spots he can go get it because he's not athletic enough to just throw it up there and let him get it. I thought we did a poor job among many other things adjusting to how Dedric was guarded. He can make plays with the ball away from the hoop but we seemed set on forcing it inside to see 3 guys swarm him. This gameplan reminded me of How Jay Wright took Perry Ellis out of the game in the Elite 8. Just my two cents

Correct me if I'm wrong here. Isn't this a joint eligibility review between KU/NCAA?
