I haven't seen anything about Green close to a decision which could help things. I believe KU is still in his recruitment but who knows.
Williamson has shown a lot of interest in KU and vice versa. There is a lot of connections to him (parents) which I think makes it logical to expect he'll be a Jayhawk when its all said and done if he continues to improve the way he has.
Williamson & Green are two different prospects though. Green is a potential OAD, starter as a freshman. Williamson is more of a 3-4 year type player that likely is a rotation piece as a freshman. Which do we need more?
I think KJ leaves after the year (age factor) and follows his brother. That leaves Garrett and maybe Cunliffe? Sam could use the graduate transfer route as well after this season to find more playing time. Agbaji is a candidate for a RS, unknown how ready he will be for a bigger role after this season.
There's a scenario where KU needs a bunch of perimeter pieces. Say Grimes, Dotson, KJ all leave early and of course Vick is a Sr. 4 max perimeter players leaving, more realistically 2. I see Dotson playing at least two seasons here.
2019 would look like this:
PG- Dotson. Moore, Jacobs (Current Commit)
SG- ?, Possible Dotson or Moore slides into that 2 PG type lineup. Definite need for at least one elite shooting guard.
SF- Garrett, KJ, Sam, Agbaji
Maybe one of the wings transitions to the SG position. Most likely Marcus in that scenario because of his ball handling. If his shooting improves that would improve his chances a ton.
I think Self should be selling elite guard/wing prospects some legitimate minutes in the backcourt as KU is likely going to need them.

So let me ask , for real how serious of a contender are we for the services of Josh Green ? - - Read from 247 that he is # 11 in the Nation - -- looked at the CB for him shows us tied for the lead with I think UCLA right now. - -Seems like a pretty good player moving constantly up -we got a shot? - - -Harvey on the other hand just continues to slide down to # 49 now. - -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY
Been seeing Arizona mentioned with him, believe hes visited.
I dont think the cb is accurate here
Whichever PG emerges I expect them to be option #5 in the starting lineup.
I'd be very happy if he's not a distraction. I think we have other players more capable of becoming leaders if Vick cannot change who he is. Some can, some can't and I won't fault him for it. It's still a tremendous opportunity though. It can be the driving force. He's seen the drive of Frank and Devonte the past two seasons so the groundwork he's witnessed first hand. He knows what's expected of him if he does take that route.
For the better part of 2 years Vick has been a lingering distraction. Is there a bubble we can put Vick in off the court? Between the girlfriend issues and whatever ale'd him last season he's certainly walked a thin line. Would be a great story at some point next season if he's able to bounce back and help lead this promising squad to great things this upcoming season.
I'll wonder how short the leash is. We'll find out. It would suck if he's a starter and something happens. We have depth but this team likely is better with his skills on the floor.
Vick is in a great position to capitalize on his seniority given he's the only senior. We know he doesn't have the character of a leader but this is a great opportunity. Would love to see him step up the way Devonte and Frank did in prior seasons.
Haven't really chimed in on this. Looks like it was a good thing.
I'm still shocked Vick is coming back. That seemed like a closed door to me. I've been fooled twice this off-season. First Doke returned and now Vick. Glad I was wrong.
The biggest question for me regarding this whole thing is what happens if he doesn't ride the straight and narrow at every turn? Is this the final straw he's been given? Will Self let him be a continued distraction if he reverts back to old habits? Distractions always end up hurting this team in the end.
What happens when the initial "I'm going to be different" wears off.
I know many of these questions we don't have the answer too. We'll have to see how it plays out
I hope he truly takes this chance to heart and becomes the player many of us thought he could be.
Svi has looked good so far. If he can make shots he's got a chance for a rotation spot
Devonte was solid in his last game as well
Hurt & Williamson would be really good additions. I hope we get them both

I'm interested to see how this hire goes with our basketball interests. I would assume Jeff Long will be in charge of finding the next Basketball Head Coach when Bill Self hangs it up. Hopefully its not anytime soon but when the day comes I hope he's the type of AD we can respect and appreciate when that time comes.
He's got his hands full with the football mess that's for sure. Fire the one in charge now, take your lumps and make the right hire
I bet Bill is involved with finding the next coach when he does step down.
I hope so, granted its a mutual decision when he steps away. If he leaves for the NBA or something unexpected then JL will have to shoulder a lot of the ground work and responsibility.
I'm certainly not trying to think ahead. I was voicing what would be the biggest job for the AD in the future. Short term- give the football team a living pulse. Long term continue to keep KU basketball at the elite of the elite level

Wowza!
Their son just went # 7 in the NBA draft.
His parents are loose cannons getting a platform to cry about nothing
These parents just won't stop whining and complaining.
great stuff, love to hear these type of stories
Doubtful he's a "superstar" but should be an All Big-12 and All American candidate. If he was a bouncy athlete he wouldn't be in College today. KU's gain I suppose. I don't see him on the first mock draft for 2019. He looks to be a highly skilled player who can play inside/out and should be a great sidekick to Doke. Will he show leadership? Will he be a big shot taker/maker? Will his stats translate to KU? I hope all the above is true.
I'm still of the opinion he'll be better for us down the road. If he's ready to play 15-25 minutes a game for us that's fine too. He's tiny, there's no way around it. He looks to have a knack for getting into the paint and dishing a lob or pass to a big. I can see a lot of Moore to Doke lobs this season. His defense is the biggest ? mark for me. Has a bit of an unorthodox shot as well so we'll see.
Who knows. I hope he gets to play. He makes the front-court depth unreal. He impressed in some big time games, I think he was able to give the team exactly what it needed at opportune moments. Given a full offseason of work and natural progression you have to be a bit excited what he could do. KU should be able to roll out a 1-5 lineup that can compete with anyone. However what might separate this KU team from the rest of the country is the depth at 6-7-8-9. That could be Silvio, Charlie, KJ/Garrett, Dave/Mitch.
Moore is good to have because of the youth. Still I have zero doubts both freshman will start. Self didn't recruit them for the bench. Of course Self will sit those who don't do what he wants. I can't see either of them being the type that will require that kind of tough love coaching.
Huge concern, maybe the biggest other then chemistry. A game that's transitioning to 3 pt shooting and we have a roster reverting back to the old ways. I guess that's why Self gets paid the big bucks to figure it out.
Grimes projected #6 next year. Enjoy him while we have him because it wont be long
JRE to spend his final year at IMG. Rut Roh:astonished:

Chalmers #34, Mason! #34, Graham #34...KU’s lucky number?
That's pretty wild!
Paul Pierce wore #34
The NBA has a way of weeding out the bad apples. Not saying Preston is one but the decision making him and his family embarked on had to have played a big factor in why he wasn't drafted.
Good point, his FT % is of concern.
Texas Hawk 10 said:
@BeddieKU23 How many players increase their shooting % when transitioning to a deeper 3 point line?
His outside shooting in Canada does not bode well for Grimes shooting a higher % than he did in HS next season.
No idea. HS stats are not as widely available to compare. Grimes stats were available, Dotson's were not for example.
If you think 6 games tells the story on what his shooting will be for KU, that's your opinion to have. Outside shooting for this team has already been singled out by our coach as the biggest question mark.
Or could translate to 41-43%, goes both ways
Definitely those guys were wings in KU's system which you noted. A few extra weeks of coaching from Self can't hurt him at all once he gets into Lawrence
Just to follow up a bit. He might not be the "sharpshooter" we have become accustomed to with Svi, Graham, Mason etc. Maybe he's more along Vick/Selden where he has games he's red hot but his averages are inconsistent sometimes.
I do know one thing watching his games he's going to impact the game in so many ways.
He is the secondary ballhandler any coach dreams of having, he's a heck of an athlete, passing-vision, rebounding, and size for the 2 guard position will cause fits to most teams trying to guard him. He's not a finished product but heck I don't know if we've signed a guard as ready as he is to compete and impact the game.
Over 200 attempts this year in HS he shot 39%.
Will 6 games tell the story on his shooting? Unlikely I think.
I've seen some question his mechanics or effectiveness from shot to shot. Something the staff can address this summer. His shot looks good off the dribble from what I saw.
If he's here just one year and that looks very likely we'll see. Svi didn't set the world on fire in year one for recent example but the comp isn't apples to apples. I believe Grimes is a good shooter and will have every opportunity to showcase such.
I think Silvio will play this year but I'm just being optimistic here. The risk is always going to be there as long as this case is open.
I don't think he starts either but he'll be a key rotation piece in case of injury/foul trouble.
Dotson will start and I think he'll be the better defender which usually wins out with Self. If Moore is good enough to start that's good for KU. We could have 2-3 guys that are that 6th man type. It's a good problem to have
Glad its not KU's problem
won't be long before WKU is being investigated.. Robinson, Bassey. Sure, not fishy at all
Like it
It would be great to get both. How likely that happens is anyone's guess. A big advantage to Self here getting to coach them in the middle of their recruitments.
Perry Ellis might actually be a good comp overall. Ellis was a fringe Top 25 player for most of his HS career as well. I don't see Hurt dropping too far from where he is currently but maybe by the end of the class he's more bottom 10 based on ceiling.
Hurt's biggest struggles I see in College is defense and dealing with bigger athletic guys. Once he learns how to compensate for it with his skill I see him making a major impact.
Yeah in Team USA ball Self is getting away with JRE at the 5 right now. I don't think its the position he'll play in College though. I was also projecting that if McCormack is our starting 5 man in the 19/20 season there's only 1 spot available to start. I'm sure both of them want to land in situations with a chance to start. That's not including what could happen with KJ Lawson, Lightfoot & De Sousa who could all be back after next year as well. We'll see on that front. So the further you look into it, how does Self convince them both to sign when both would likely be coming into situations where they are competing against each other or against veteran KU players. A lot of unknowns. Not sure we can sign both in November if both go that route. I think there's a chance Hurt goes spring but we'll see
Grimes size definitely stands out at the guard position. Self could definitely trot out 3 ball handlers in Dotson/Grimes/Garrett. Dedric is skilled with the ball as well, underrated passer. Those 4 with Doke could be a very advantageous lineup and KU's best 5 by season's end
The biggest issue I see with landing both JRE & Hurt is they play the same position. We'll see how it plays out. JRE I've believed has been a silent commit since last year. I can't imagine at the end of the day him going somewhere else. We talk about pressure kids have to stay local when KU is recruiting Out of State kids and how often we lose those battles because of it. This is an example of a prospect KU has been on for years with as good of a connection as you can get. Crazier things have happened but I can't imagine he's seriously entertaining leaving KS.
Hurt seems like one of the top 3 targets for Self/KU. The Memphis coaching change threw a curveball in his recruitment. I know Duke & Indiana among others will press still as well. Being coached by Self is as good of an advantage as we are going to gain in this one. His father is involved, we know how those situations can get. I wouldn't be surprised to see him wait until spring.
Your right the comparison is hard because the comparison isn't equal. Hurt is a highly touted kid, Daum wasn't. An immediate comp hasn't really come to mind. Sam Dekker maybe the best one I could find otherwise.
I wouldn't worry too much about Grimes shot. He was 39% in High School on over 200 attempts this past season. He'll be one of our best shooters, if not the best.
Hurt is a very skilled player. You can see he lacks top end athleticism but he's everything you want in a 4 man otherwise. His lack of athleticism could keep him in College multiple years.
Very impressed with Robinson-Earl. He's not a prospect we can let get by.
This is basically free recruiting for Self with Hurt/JRE etc. Other coaches have benefited in the past from it. Bamba went to Texas for example because of the relationship Smart had with him from Team USA ball.. That's the type of benefit Self can get from this.
Let me put it this way if Hurt & JRE choose another school after being coached by Self this summer I'd have to question why they were ever interested in KU before. If this doesn't sell them to be coached be a HOF'er I don't know what will.
Mike Daum without as much girth to him?

@BeddieKU23 So who will it be?
Last I heard/seen Arizona and Villanova were hot on his trail
Won't be KU but thanks for sharing! This reclassifying drama is hard to follow
I doubt he redshirts personally. We saw the volatility that proceeded with our roster especially in the post last year. Having just 10 eligible players made it difficult to have practice. We have 12 this year if Silvio is available. His direct competition is Silvio who may/may not play. If Silvio plays its just a numbers crunch. However I'd think you keep Mitch active just in case, we know this situation isn't ending anytime soon. Someone is the odd man out. It's not McCormack because he's likely the backup 5 man. It sounds like KJ is going to be a hybrid forward learning both positions for flexibility in lineups. Mitch might be big #6. That's where a redshirt seems like a possibility. Big #6 isn't playing unless injury/suspension/eligibility concerns exist

@DoubleDD There's nothing wrong with the idea of Mitch redshirting. This year's front court is going to be stacked, especially if Silvio plays. That would give KU 5 legitimate bigs and that means someone is not playing many minutes.
If that person ended up being Mitch, why wouldn't you redshirt him. When would he have more value, 2018-19 as the 5th big playing primarily garbage time next season or as a 5th year senior in 2020-2021 when he could be a legitimate starter for KU playing 25-30 minutes per game.
You're focusing on the small picture of the 2018-19 season impact of a potential Mitch redshirt, take a couple of steps back and look at how a move like that impacts KU long term.
KU is likely going to be an incredibly young team in 2020-2021 and having a 5th year senior like Mitch on that team would be a huge boost for a group of very young players because he is a great leader and could be a coach on the court type player.
I'm not against redshirting. Yet I don't see how you sit Mitch? A proven commodity versus raw talent that may or may not pan out.
Who's the raw talent your speaking of?
Of course I'm sure this was part of the 4 year plan to transform Mitch given what he came into KU as. A gradual plan to have him maxed by Senior Year.
I'm also guessing he wasn't supposed to be counted on last season as much as he was so the situations where he was a bit overmatched were the result of the Whitman/Preston/De Sousa drama. He performed great at times and was essential to the team.
It's just interesting seeing the weight gain when We may need Mitch less this season. We'll see I'm certainly pulling for him
Up 16 pounds, wow. Where was this last year?
Good stuff!

Also Vick's defense was pretty poor.
The most glaring reason we may be fine without him.
At times his shooting was good especially the early part of last year and then the NCAA's. Without tuned in LV this team doesn't make the final 4. Tuned out LV was a mess, almost two straight months of it. Can't happen again. His athletic ability impressed us all but he rarely made athletic plays that weren't dressed up for him. Spectacular dunker/flyer absolutely. Failed to finish with contact regularly and his ball-handling was certainly not a strength.
He tanked his own draft stock which was pretty darn high for a player who was under the radar. NBA teams tank, LV tanked his future this year. Now look at his options with La La nutso running the show. Hope he gets it together. Would love to see him end his career here with a chance at full redemption, seems slim though and unlikely. If we are even a smidge right about this past year with him he's not even close to ready for this next step. The kicker is did Self show him the door without drawing attention to it as we've seen with others?
I think West Virginia is in the bottom 5 until I see what team they trot out. Ahmad, Konate, West, Harris give them 4 big wing/forward types. It's the backcourt that's a mess and without finding competent replacements they are not the West Virginia's of the past. Teddy Allen is gone, Carter, Miles to graduation. Beetle Bolden has been a backup at WV. The PG/SG position is a complete mystery and honestly the options aren't great on paper. I'm sure Huggins will get 2-3 of them to compete but this looks like a much different team then in the past in the Big-12. Have them down until we see what their guards can do.
K-St is the 2nd best team on paper. Should be 9 deep in the rotation if Trice can give them quality role minutes in the post. McGuirl was emerging in the NCAA tourney after doing nothing all year. Diarra filled in for Stokes who was injured. Somehow someway I expect this team to underachieve to last year. Despite Stokes and Wade being injured at various parts of the season this team still overachieved and now sets the bar at a level I'm confident Weber cannot replicate.
TCU could actually be the 2nd best team next season if they figure out their post rotation. They have 6-7 forward/centers right now. A few redshirts from last year are eligible and they added some down under talent that we have relatively no idea what they are. Noi & Bane are first team Big-12 good and we know Fisher when healthy can be a tough guard to handle. They have 6 freshman to mix into the rotation. Kadeem Archie had KU interest. Dixon has done well.
The Martin twins plus big man Caroline returned to Nevada. With the returning talent, incoming freshman Jordan Brown and transfers this is a loaded squad. Top 5 good.
I can't remember what game it was I saw of Vanderbilt on the circuit but it was hard to believe he was being reputed as a Top 10 talent at the time. I'm also aware that AAU ball is not the best setting to form judgement on kids so I always have to keep that in mind. What I saw of him was not flattering and it stuck with me. It didn't surprise me that he played a handful of games and then left Kentucky. But that's the Kentucky way. It also reminds me of my initial judgement. Maybe he's doing the best thing for his career. If he gets healthy and finds a team and develops he's certainly what the modern NBA wants from a hybrid wing/forward position. I can just imagine that if he ended up at KU and did this we would probably be a bit upset given he basically did nothing he was touted to do this season. Of course the injury played a big part of it. This would look like Diallo all over again.
Good backstory as well!
Haven't heard much regarding him with KU. I figure that's a sign we are not actively after him.. Maybe it changes.
