Draft Declarations Thread β€’ May 31, 2018 04:11 PM

@justanotherfan

Both actually. Maybe not off-the-court issues in regards to eligibility concerns, more character concerns watching him play.

No doubt Vanderbilt is a talent, and built for the modern NBA if he can find a team that will invest in him. Is he really ready? I would say not even close. But its his decision to make. At Kentucky he was already over-recruited anyway.

@BShark

Yeah lots of wildcards.

I'd still swing for an elite wing to pair with Marcus. Honestly I have no idea what KJ will do. Usually family likes to stick together so I can see him just moving on with his brother. I think its way too early to know or assume but generally I get that feeling about those situations. A Jr Marcus and a Soph Ochai doesn't sound bad. Definitely need bigs. Have to swing for an elite guard as well

@BShark

I'm glad we avoided the Vanderbilt fiasco. Watching his AAU games he had red flags galore.

@BShark

We must have some really good vibes coming from our wing targets. I'm sure we'll track Hall this summer but it certainly doesn't look like we've full court pressed in any way

@mayjay

It doesn't look good. I wonder what the basis was for ruling him to sit a 2nd year at minimum. Pretty crazy, not something I agree with and I'm not surprised this was the ruling

Wenyen Gabriel leaves Kentucky but PJ Washington returns. Ugh

Tyus Battle returns to Syracuse ensuring another bubble year in which they make the tourney and overachieve

Charles Matthews returns to Michigan. Huge for them.

Tyler Cook returns to Iowa

OFFICIAL: UDUNKA BACK FOR YEAR 3 (ish) β€’ May 30, 2018 05:17 PM

Great news! I was wrong. Glad to have Udoka back another season. At least 1 full time starter for Self to work with.

The bash brothers are in business- Dedric, Doke

OFFICIAL: UDUNKA BACK FOR YEAR 3 (ish) β€’ May 30, 2018 01:42 PM

"It seems to take his mind time to process just how to move his body"

Wouldn't that point to a player still in the beginning stages of learning how to play the game? He was also still recovering from a knee injury when he faced Nova. A fully healthy Doke was still a liability defending in space so maybe its a mute point however one game seems to stick out above else, one he wasn't even healthy for and played through for his team

This is interesting. If he returns we are a top 3 team no doubt. If he leaves what's our ceiling?

Lower but by home much? We have no idea what this next batch of Hawks is going to mold into. We have historical evidence to suggest we'll be fine, better then most, most likely still the best in the Big-12. I think we reason to be optimistic Self and Co can make this next batch as good as we've become so accustomed to.

Danny Manning suffers another brutal loss this off-season as his would be Sr guard Crawford has elected to stay in the draft.

Makes sense after they signed a grad transfer guard not too long ago.

Danny's miracles are running dry

Jalen Wilson announcing for Michigan soon...

sucks

Yep. Looks like KU didn't prioritize him enough. Lower hoops programs are more willing to put the hammer down early while recruits are lower ranked.

Your probably right. I just hate that this is one that pops early (it's looking) that's a top 20 player that KU was on in some way and he's going elsewhere. We'd be lucky to see one of our other wing targets even pick a school by November

No we are not close to the #1 team currently. It's nice to see us being talked about highly after losing at least 4 starters. Let's us know just how good Dedric really is

@justanotherfan

Absolutely the fallout from the draft will change things a bit.

Nevada certainly could make a case as a top 3 pre-season team with the twins. Their PG returns from injury, added OAD possible Jordan Brown, 4 more high scoring transfers to the mix. It's a ton of talent that will have to be worked on to mesh.

Kentucky still looks flawed to me even if those guys return but definitely their ceiling raises a heck of a lot with them. With them keeping mum on the transfer market it seems they must be confident at least 1 of the 3 is staying.

KU with Doke certainly has a higher ceiling and puts some pieces into place that would be unsettled without him. It downplays the impact Lightfoot and McCormack would have to give. With the unknown situation regarding De Sousa's future we definitely could use a starter returning to anchor this team that's facing a complete face lift

Zenger Fired β€’ May 21, 2018 04:26 PM

The firing is important, the timing is great. Once FB season rolls along and the struggles start to mount there can be a move made there as well.

Think about this the next AD will not only potentially be responsible for hiring a new FB coach but Bill Self's replacement as well. Not only that, whatever platoon mess comes with conference realignments, tv contracts, potential staying/leaving the Big-12. This could be seen as a very important hire coming up. KU has to knock it out of the park.

Draft Declarations Thread β€’ May 21, 2018 03:53 PM

@justanotherfan

Good post and very true.

I think Gonzaga looks like maybe the most complete team going into next year. This was a young team reloading after some key departures. Their starting 5 should be as good as any getting back two NBA prospects (Hachimura, Tillie) to return for their Jr seasons. Norvell takes another step forward after a stellar Freshman year. Perkins runs point as the savy veteran leader. They will have depth, size, shooting which is all key.

The only other potential very good team I could find was Nevada but that hinges on both the twins & Caroline returning. There is a lot of talent on that team if all return especially adding a potential OAD in Jordan Brown.

I was reading Garrett's uncle is working with him on his shot before reporting back to KU. 1,000 makes a day, ambitious, driven and the type of stuff you like to see. They know what they need to work on and the goal will be making it muscle memory. Got to love a kid willing to put in the work.

Awesome to hear. I don't think putting forth the work and effort will be an issue with Garrett.

Absolutely. With his freshman year out the way there should be room for growth with Garrett. We know he's going to put in the effort.

In a normal year he probably doesn't play much as a freshman but this wasn't a typical year for depth. He got a crazy amount of experience that's going to be vital for the team and for his own development.

@BeddieKU23 I certainly understand where your coming from for sure. - -My biggest problem I think is that people throwing out names mostly for the two spot - - I understand yes we could use the two a outside shooter for sure but it's gotten to the point with that spot our 2 - that it sure seems at this point that some are just suggesting anybody for a 2 we lost on Romeo - -we lost Cremo . - -Yes quite possibly our 3pt shooting will fall from previous years , but in these recent previous years we have been towards the top of the nation in 3 pt fg pct - - so ya we will tail off , but I feel that it's not as bad as some try and make it out to be. As to where we need to get just about anyone who can shoot from time to time decently from there just to say we filled the outside need. - That's the point it's getting to - there are a lot of other factors that goes into the player then just hitting the outside J. - If he can't play defense worth a crap - -what good is he - - if he is a below average ball handler is it worth the scholarship? - everything he is giving us on the offensive end - he is giving back on the defensive end.

Understand the concern about IF Doke and Silvio do not return - -in Reality I think Doke comes back - -Silvio - -not so much dang it -- I could possibly see us maybe like you say trying to possibly get another Big because of that -I think it's going to work okay- - but if we do go Big - just not Bassey from everything I've heard right?

I haven't been paying attention as much but are there a lot of names out there being thrown around? I mentioned a few of bigger named graduate transfers left but so far I haven't seen any news regarding KU interest. Guys like Brock Stull and Matt Mooney are going to end up on good teams, Texas Tech wants Mooney and had him on an official visit. Stull has interest from Minnesota and NC St among others. I do get your point though, point taken. It's May and this is what we get for losing guys to the NBA and not having the ability to be Kentucky and wave a magic wand at recruits. The FBI thing is killing us currently

For me I'm concerned about more then just finding a shooter. Cremo would have been a nice fit and goes to Villanova. The interest in him alone makes it seem Self is after a veteran guard to mix in with his very young team. He knows what he lacks at this point.

I think Doke is staying in the draft but if he doesn't that will change my outlook a good deal. This whole Silvio thing just sucks. I can only hope KU is in a position to make a good informed decision regarding his status by the fall. We need him, badly.

Self always finds a way, in Self we trust I suppose

@jayballer73

Technically we will have 2 scholarships if Doke doesn't return. We have another player in limbo (Silvio). See where I'm going with this?

Of course Doke could return and Silvio eligible, that would alleviate any concern or put to rest any needed roster additions.

My main point is the roster is still in flux. Cremo would have been a nice fit. I think it would be nice to have a veteran guard on the team that can push the young guys. Self said they are after another player so I can see why he's kicking the tires on some kids. I don't think we will have closure to this situation until June/July.

This seems like the new normal unfortunately. We strike out and keep swinging..
