Camera view sucks
Zero answer for missi
Juan got lucky
Nice layup kev
Kev to give it a go
Kev is a game time decision
We haven't made shots on the road and defending the 3 has been a huge issue. Completely different team on the road. Agree it's harder then ever to win away from home. Officiating is the leading cause there
Will take our best game of the year to win imo. Don't see it happening but in the case they do, I'll be even happier. Still will root with the hope the guys took Tuesday personally and we all know Self hates losing to Drew..
Kev is probably playing, in some capacity today it sounds.
BYU Bench minutes- 84- 29 points. Played 9.
KU Bench minutes- 37- 9 points. Played 8.
Pope might have outcoached Self here. Fouling Hunter, using his bench heavy. Sounds like BYU plays a lot of guys, Self doesn't generally. Perhaps it's something that needs to change in the future. The game is ever changing and it doesn't seem like guys are holding up playing 33+ minutes a night.
We shouldn't have been winded, we just had 7 days off and another 3 to the BYU game. Something is really off with this group this year from a conditioning standpoint. BYU played 9 guys and only 1 hit 30 minutes and that was because of foul trouble. All 5 KU starters hit 30+ minutes again. It seemed like Self committed to playing the bench more with substitutions the last 2 games but it's still an issue with guys playing too many minutes. I know Kev is 30+ minutes missing but man we just seem to have issues that are usually not a talking point (like conditioning). I can't recall a season where its been this visible
Hunter in conf play- 57% FT, 17% from 3, 51% FG. Yikes
I don't think BYU wanted to foul Hunter as much as they did but it seemed to me it shifted to a coaching decision once he missed some and they were getting in his head. Also reminds me of when Kruger "Hack a Doke'd" KU @ OU a few years back, KU lost due to that strategy that night. Hunter shoots it better statistically but he's missed plenty when we've needed him to focus and step up and Tuesday was no different. He's been in an awful shooting slump since December.
Per Self- Kev trending to possibly play Saturday against Baylor if he practices. Perhaps it's more likely he returns against K-St at home but we shall see.
Sounds like the message Self sent Kev on air was received. Perhaps the L at home shook the tree a bit too.
We had their 2 primary ball handlers in severe foul trouble and they were left to put their leading scorer who comes off the bench on the ball and he picked us apart so badly they could bring Hall back in and he smelt blood. I still think we did a very poor job of disrupting what they wanted to do. The ball went wherever they pleased. They got the shots they wanted so often the shots they made were not a surprise once they had momentum. They stepped up on our home floor and we didn't match it enough. Really disappointing to see.
But we don't lose this game if the offense shows up. The free throw misses were reminiscent of how we lost to Cuse in the Championship game.
BYU was basically KU but with guys who can actually put the ball in the basket from deep. They pass it just like us, had almost identical assists per game as us. How they ran offense sharing the ball should have looked familiar. KU had a scouting report on this team for months and then poorly executed whatever changes they made to guard them from 3. BYU knew KU would revert to their ways when the shot clock got low or was stuck in close out situations. I thought we did an OK job in the first half forcing them into rushed or low % looks but that 2nd half was bad defense. Self is vulnerable against these teams until he adjusts his scheme which I don't see happening
So thrilled he was able to give it a go under such duress conditions
The offseason in general was a head scratcher. The portal was a mess. Morris is a stain on this season and one that won't be forgotten especially if the end of the season is negative. It's also an opportunity to learn for this staff what the portal is going to be like, what kind of players should be targets going forward and how will NIL keep this program at the top. This upcoming portal season is going to be pure insanity. It's one that will make some coaches go in other directions based on what we have seen from the first wave of football portal madness.
Certainly wasn't his best game. I understand your frustrations with him and they are valid.
A team is often dependent on its PG playing well to win. Last night was no different.
He's a great kid, had a tough life and he's a kid I just can't root against while he's here.
I haven't felt like Self has been the issue coaching them up. I do think he is on the hook for questionable roster moves this offseason though.
Neither Hunter or Kev is an All American if this season ended today right? That's kind of been the thing the announcers/media run with but Kev has regressed in conf play + the injury forcing him to miss games doesnt help a lasting impression. Hunter has put up numbers but has also shown he isn't a dominant force on his own either. At least for me it's been disappointing that he hasn't taken the absence of Kev to step up even more and be the leader/face of the team. Perhaps the voters don't pay attention as M
Much as we do.
It is what it is.
This team isn't going anywhere without Kev and the effort game to game this late in the season is so disappointing. Guys looked gassed after 3 days off and a week prior.. BYU shoots the 3 and certainly didn't guard them well. We continue to miss shots that should go down.
This was a team loss but Hunter let his team down last night. You can't miss 9 free throws
Laughable Hunter
Gets worse next yr adding the 4 teams from the former Pac-12.
I did the research on KU getting more Big Monday road games then others and need to compile it.
Good stuff, appreciate your optimistic view. I see it and want to believe it but I'm not there, call it cautiousness. I need to see a road game look like we have at home at times. The bench pieces can step up at times but we've yet to see it even 2 games in a row or in basically any road game so far.
Timberlake's production seems tied to bigger minutes and he's proven he's not a reliable scorer off the bench in spot minutes. He's in a perfect spot though to salvage his season and keep confidence in himself.
Elmarko is a non scorer but his impact getting others buckets and his energy flashed big time against Texas. We never see it 2 games in a row though. It's unfortunate that he was further away from being a big contributor then I thought he would be.
I think some of the benches issues fall on coaching preferences. We have a coach that's second to none in competitiveness and ego to win games. It's why he's the best and in the HOF. The big 4 have been overworked because Self has such a high bar for the level of play he wants to see which then caused them to get worn down and led to nagging injuries etc. Now he's forced to let the bench play through stuff they could have played through earlier this season with more balance in minutes. Just some 2 cents. Perhaps this was the road that had to be traveled to get where we want to go this season.
This team hasn't hit their peak and it would be nice if they are close to reaching it.
I'd like to buy the last game and bottle it. Will we see the same energy tonight?
They had a week off and were home. Texas was at 2 very distinct disadvantages despite
being without Kev. We have yet to see the version of KU we see at home anywhere else. That's probably my biggest concern. It's sort of a mirage.
Baylor and Houston are huge road games where they have the opportunity to rise to the occasion. If they can win 1 or both without Kev that's something to get excited about for March imo
I don't think it was "intentional" as Filipowski has put it. That's changed the conversation or narrative. I have thought ever since KU had brush ups in Manhattan and Hilton years ago and other examples across the country that there should be something in place to get the opposing team off the floor before the storming. It's not like they are about to enjoy what happens.
I agree that it's part of the unique bond of the game so a ban isn't the solution either.
Would we feel the same way if it was Hunter straining his ankle from something that can be avoided?
It's Duke so I don't have sympathy but do feel these court stormings are not that safe in situations
Why don't they just make it mandatory for the players to leave the court first- opponent then let fans and home team enjoy. There is no need for players to get hurt that's for sure over this, even if it is Duke
I come out of that statement more optimistic they are just going to play it week to week. Ideally he's healthy enough to play before the NCAA tournament but given how the league is, it may be best to sit him through that crapshoot as well
