Devonte Graham is tied for 22nd place on the all-time scoring list with 1,495 points.
9 official games left in his season. 7 regular, 1 Big-12 tourney, 1 NCAA tourney. Max games left; 16. At his current scoring rate it looks like his range will be 14th to 11th give or take. Not bad for a kid that almost went to Appalachian St
Grown man line
Embiid 27, 12 and 3 blocks in a win over the Wizards. Oubre had 10, Morris 11
Yeah the Suns are a mess. At least JJ is getting a ton of PT at this point
16 and 10 for JJ for the hopeless Suns

I know you mentioned this kid a while back, Tyger Campbell. Committed to UCLA yesterday. A big get for them, 4 year PG who will leave his mark on the Bruins

30 for 30 already in the works
KU might have a good pitch to sell him depending on how the post situation shakes out between now and next season. I know we are not close to his favorite but we are in on him in some capacity. We will see what happens
That's a good question actually in regards to McCormack. If Doke leaves who's the 5 next year? Lawson & De Sousa have the size to slide over to that position it looks but neither is your prototypical Center. McCormack is a true Center so in theory maybe he has a leg up there. He's played against top competition for years whether it was for Oak Hill or his AAU squad so at least we know he's been exposed to situations where he's up against some really good players. As @Kcmatt7 mentioned he recently played against Vernon Carey a top 2 2019 prospect and struggled to defend him for the most part. In his defense Carey is probably one of the Top 5-7 HS prospect overall right now. He'd be top 5 in 2018 in my opinion. Dave has come a long ways with his body, athleticism and overall skill level. Just seems like a guy that needs a year to adjust before his impact starts to be felt on a regular basis

The Ogbaji offer is smart, he's a local'ish rising prospect at a position KU may need someone at if things go a certain way. It's always nice to have your hand in more then one pot in case the top prospect on the board goes somewhere else or there's more attrition at season's end then expected, or planned for. This is Self and his staff making sure they don't get caught empty handed if something happens
Local-ish is a good way to put it. Apparently he is from Milwaukee originally. Two of the crystal ball picks to KU are people from Wisconsin so maybe they know something. Probably just assuming though.
In the last month Ogbaji has been to what 2-3 games, KU has sent assistants to watch his games and then Self went and saw him in person. I think its easy to assume that KU has legitimate interest in him and not just conditionally recruiting him. I'm not ready to connect the dots on what recruiting him means. It sounds as if KU really likes him despite his ranking etc (which I'm sure will go up) now that he's gotten a slew of Power 5 offers

I would assume the distribution charge was due to the amount exceeding what was a misdemeanor vs a felony? I can't imagine that charge actually sticks as a felony but who knows what Green(e) has gotten himself into.
Loving the Green!
ormer Kansas basketball player Brannen Greene, 23, was arrested Saturday, Feb. 3, for possession of marijuana in Wabaunsee County.
According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, Greene was heading east on I-70 when he was pulled over for speeding at mile marker 322 at 8:50 p.m.
Greene was arrested for speeding, expired registration, driving without a valid license, and distribution of marijuana, according to KHP.
He was taken to the Wabaunsee County Jail.
The 6-foot-7 guard played in 93 games for the Jayhawks from 2013-2016. He averaged 4.6 points, 1.8 rebounds, and 0.7 assists per game.
Greene last played for Salt Lake City in the NBA G-League. He played five games for the Salt Lake City Stars, averaging 7.2 points, 3.2 rebounds, and 1.8 assists per game.
His last game with Salt Lake City was in November.

@BeddieKU23 I don't see him getting much run if Doke is back.
Agreed he would have a reserve role if Doke comes back. Anxiously awaiting intel on that one
Jackson has scored 20+ in 4 straight games for the Suns. His shooting numbers are still really bad but its nice to see him finally adjusting the game and contributing

@BeddieKU23 Quickly reminded of why I haven't been on the phog in months as soon as I open some threads. I really can't believe how many people think McCormack is going to start next year. Is it because he is a McDAA? I have no idea.
Yeah its hard to read stuff on there.
I hope McCormack finds a way to get some minutes next season. He's got some low post moves I'm excited to see the staff work with him on. People see Burger Boy, from Oak Hill and assume. Maybe he surprises. I don't know next years squad is going to have a lot of fresh slates to work with

Phog post? This move to go to Mitch feels like a long term benefit move and that Vick is done.
Yeah it was a phog post.
I think as much as its a long term move, its rewarding those who do what Self wants. He clearly would play 4 guards if the 4 guards were all on the same page with their responsibilities. The 4 guard lineup with our roster is still the most effective lineup we can play. Making this move 23 games into the season is a huge risk. But clearly Self is pissed and sending a message
Hawk8086 said:
@BeddieKU23 Is that based on NBA potential or is that opinion influenced by the latest developments with Vick?
He didn't elaborate on that line.
If I was to assume, I think he was told Vick wasn't returning when the season started. That would make sense in the fact that Romeo Langford is considering KU highly but seems to be waiting to make sure (Vick) leaves before announcing his decision. I'm connecting dots, however this could be wrong.
The latest developments certainly could be a factor as well. Jan 1st, Vick is a possible 1st round pick. Feb 1st, Vick has played himself out of both rounds. He's now been benched twice. I don't believe Vick's situation is like Carlton Bragg or Greene for instance where the door was opened for them...
Ryan Noel does not believe Vick will be back. Interesting
I think Charlie will do some good things for KU in time. He's a scorer and that skill alone will probably have some value next season. His slight frame really scares you in situations but hopefully he's a competitor and plays hard to compensate for it.
Newman returning would be more important then Vick as it currently stands.
I'm impressed if Malik is actually telling the staff his interest in returning. He's definitely matured during his time here.
JayHawkFanToo said:
KU needs him playing at a high level for the team to do well; obviously he is not the most important player on the team but a very key part of it; his level of play in the upcoming weeks might determine how well the team does and how far it advances.
In our 3 conference losses Vick has 11 points in 98 minutes. Horrid.
10 points a game from him would put less pressure on others to compensate for what he's not giving this team. Until Vick is playing to his ability this team is in a tough situation.

@Jayballer54 I'm with @BeddieKU23 on this. While Moore could get the nod a few games early, I think the talent difference between he and Moore is more than Grimes perhaps Vick/Newman. But it sounds like we all are expecting a lot from the freshman.
If Dotson wasn't the starter at PG to start the season I think it would be Grimes that beats him out. Nothing against Charlie, I just don't think he's a point guard yet. He's an option if we need it and somehow Devon or Quentin was behind Self's learning curve or he wanted to send a message to them. I'm still kind of puzzled at the Moore signing with how we recruited over him. Charlie has some Frank scoring ability in him and hopefully can become more Nic Moore or Sr Mason later in his career for us.
I know the staff did an unbelievable job establishing relationships with Devon & Quentin but let's be real, Self doesn't land 2 McDonald's All American's without giving them some kind of promise of playing time. Both of those recruitment's were contentious and they could have gone somewhere else to play 30 minutes a game.
Try this .. If Vick and Newman are gone, and no Langford, could Moore, Dotson and Grimes all start? Lots of ball handling there.
Ouch, small lineup but certainly not out of the realm of possibility. I think Self would sign another guard in that situation because you can't see Self having no point guard depth again like he's dealing with this season.
I will be completely shocked if Dotson isn't a starter from Day-1.
HighEliteMajor said:
@BeddieKU23 Man, I really DO think he's as good as we think he is. The word "coasting" is concerning. We don't know him. Don't know his motivations. Logic would say that coasting would cause a large drop in his NBA prospects. But logic isn't always the determining factor.
At this point, I would try the Newman treatment. Start Garrett.
I do think he's that good, only makes his play more frustrating. I was just throwing it out there in-case there's something we're missing.
I don't personally believe he's coasting. I believe he's a good teammate and his quiet demeanor and personality can make it easy to assume things that could be far from the truth. If he was looking past this year towards the next level I think his coach would be quick to put an end to it
Didn't Self already try the bench treatment with Vick? I think that lasted only 1 game.
This team needs more from him.
HighEliteMajor said:
@BeddieKU23 Right, just something impacting him mentally. Whatever it is. Your observation on the leg thing and the change in his shot is interesting, something really worth paying attention to.
The mental aspect could be a lot of things as well. A few we've mentioned - like a GF issue again or family? What if the mental impact is actually with the team. Obviously not all players can sustain the hot start that Vick had. We figured his numbers would adjust down a bit but the downturn in almost every statistic and the defensive lapses we are seeing from him is alarming. Could he be deferring to other options that have established themselves? Is he upset with his role? Is he being tasked with being something he's not capable of being right now?
I've been a big Vick fan but what if he's not as good as we think he is. Maybe we placed too high of expectations on him. Maybe all the NBA talk that was starting to surround him got to his head. You'd hate to think that anyone would be "coasting" at this point towards the end of the season. We keep waiting for him to play himself out of this funk but its been over a month. I might have grasped at straws here on a few points but we know Vick is vital to this teams game to game success. We just have too many weaknesses to not have all 5 starters producing. It is interesting that his minutes continue to stay the same despite the struggles. Self certainly isn't ready to give up on him or go other option(s) which could mean they think he's going to figure this out. We need him to that's for sure
Glad we finally offered. Let's see how this plays out. The tea leaves on this one certainly feel as if we are going to see roster turnover on the perimeter and have a need for him. If he's as good a shooter as his video's look I definitely see why they are interested
@HighEliteMajor
I don't believe your grasping for straws at all. The girlfriend thing we really have no idea on unless he makes the news again. Given his past nothing should surprise us there. Maybe its a family issue he's not discussing? Those things can tend to weigh on someone if they have a close family member dealing with a serious issue.
Not even "talks with Self" are making a difference- like they did with Newman
The 2nd part, the Cuse/Wash/ASU games I can definitely see this being the actual issue. I remember the Washington game he was camped in the middle of that zone and took what seemed to be 45 shots to get 28 points. Washington seemed happy letting him take shots all night (instead of giving up 3's) because they were baskets that kept KU in the game, not changing the momentum.
With Svi becoming option #1, Graham & Doke 2A & 2B and even Newman has taken the next scoring option after that. So when we see the regular starters Vick is option 5 at that point. Can't imagine he saw that as his place in the "pecking order" of shots coming into the season or even after his strong non-conference play. When Vick does have scoring opportunities he's been wildly inconsistent with efficiency. Which I tie back to your point that KU was losing games based on his higher usage once they started to play better teams. Even with lower usage lately his efficiency has fallen off a cliff. We notice this easily because his shot attempts are limited and he's not converting.
Is it just me or did Vick change his perimeter shot up? Why the set shot now? It doesn't look natural to him anymore. He hit a few jumpers where he rose up high Saturday that looked really smooth and I seem to remember him being pretty darn good earlier in the season pulling up off the dribble and rising up for a 3. Part of his struggles shooting could simply be he's not getting enough legs into the shot.
I still think his defense has been the biggest disappointment since the Texas game. He should be a guy that can make athletic plays for this team and he's just blending. Self has mentioned this so many times that he's wanted Vick to be his go-to guy but we've seen Marcus actually be that guy albeit in a rotation role now. Lagerald is a head-scratcher this season
Maybe we offered because Sam won't be back. We've certainly brought this up before
BShark said:
@BeddieKU23 Nothing really, but the other options are not really better.
We could talk about Sam but we've been there before. He isn't playing well enough to be the only option
We were projected as a one seed going into today's game. We have the most group 1 wins at the moment. Do we deserve a one seed after today, hell no. Doesn't mean anything anyway winning is all that matters

I'm ready for Vick to go.
Unfortunately it's just not his year. He's a real disappointment no doubt, having one of those junior lull years. His shot has regressed and I'm not sure what he does well anymore.
No stats needed we sucked
Don't worry the game is over
And down double digits at home
Lots of players around the country are playing big minutes, just as many as Devonte and our perimeter. I'm sure those fan-bases are worried about guys wearing down just as much as we are focusing on it. It's the time of the season where its a grind. No excuses though, even teams with depth are usually settled into rotations by now and the best players are playing a majority of minutes. I expect Devonte despite playing 40 minutes in games to adjust to the situation. Self has said he wants to play so its up to Devonte to fight through at this point if he's not going to ask for a rest.
I agree there is a bit of risk with switching defenses. The hope though is gaining an advantage, something we gained against K-St. Playing zone protected guys in foul trouble, psychologically forced K-St into perimeter shots (which they missed plenty) and KU was able to rebound well enough to stay in the zone.
There are not a lot of offenses in the nation that can react seamlessly to a team that plays predominant M2M switching to a zone. Unless that team has the hot hand or has practiced zone offense a ton I think this is a wrinkle Self should continue to use when needed
Last 2 games Devonte is 1-12 in the 2nd half. Interesting that 9 of those misses have been layups or jumpers. In the first half he's 4-7 with all the made baskets being 3's.
The OU game certainly looked as if he was trying too hard to match Young and took 9 shots without making a single pass which contributed to his 4-19 line that game.

Maybe, they can't play in Wichita which seems to be the most likely scenario for KU if they keep the status quo. The earliest KU would play them would be the Sweet Sixteen and I'm not sure Wichita is playing well enough to think they get that far. Of course who knows how our very own Hawks are going to be in a month as well
