No one has commented about Fran defending the officials when KSU fans were calling for KU fouls, or all the complimentary things he said about KU.

I'm thinking he blundered onto our board, read @Crimsonorblue22's comments, and realized he needed to clean up his act!

At least for me I've developed Franitis, the ability to drown out what he's saying. Anyone else got this?

We needed all 9 guys tonight. We haven't needed depth until you get those guys reffing ($1,000 haircut man) and then they just call fouls because they like the sound of the whistle.

Not sure how he gets players

Let me tell you a story. It's the story of the other offers KSU players had... It's a really fun game. Only mentioning players that got in the game tonight that Bruce got committed in HS (no JUCOS like Wainwright or Mawien).

Levi Stockard: No other reported D1 offers.

Mike McGuirl: Hofstra. Yep, that's it.

Xavier Sneed: Cincy, Creighton, SLU, WSU, ILL. There are some more too. So, a player actually recruited by other schools. Whoa.

Cartier Diarra: SLU, Georgia State.

Brian Patrick: No other reported D1 offers.

Dean Wade: Had some real offers but this one is unfair since he was a lock for KSU since forever and other schools knew it. Probably his most legit signing next to Sneed but a gift.

Barry Brown: Houston, Western Kentucky.

This just gets better the more I look at it.

@BeddieKU23 This is a recruiting masterpiece is it not? :joy:

They locked him up for another 10 years after reading that list.

Imagine he can hide his shenanigans well with families and players until they get in a pissed off huddle with him, squeak, squeak, squeak and the kids go why did I sign up for 4 years of this.

They (Jay & Seth) also pointed out that the Big-12 should cancel the season because nobody is going anywhere.

Jack White is the savior for the Duke team listening to them talk.

BShark said:

Only team to beat them in Lincoln this year. 17-8 now. Could squeak into the tournament.

According to Jay Williams and Seth Greenberg, after so many words, no.

@Barney

Yes his effort on the boards has been noticeable.

I was searching for a key player that KU could limit. Wade would be the easy target seems how he's in the midst of a 5 game stretch of over 20 a game and he always plays well against KU. He's probably going to get his with the matchup he has, unless we hard double him a lot I see him scoring.

Brown, has averaged 20 at home in conference play. Most of it fueled by one game where he had 38. Georgia held him to 9 Saturday so maybe there's hope we catch him on another off game.

Diarra is the key IMO. Averaging almost 13 a game at home since he became the starter. We didn't guard him worth a lick in the first matchup. You take away that 3rd scorer and K-St will have a hard time scoring to keep up (in theory).

@BeddieKU23 I wonder just how limited the plays are for both offense and defense with Silvio in the game. It could have a lot to do with the short spurts of play for him.

Good point. I'm sure they can't run certain plays with him yet. I do however believe that if Silvio survives his first stint without a negative play he might get another chance. He's on the quick hook right now and the only way around it is for him to play mistake free basketball which is hard for someone in his position to do.

@FarmerJayhawk

I thought they defended us better then any team has all season in the first matchup. Either we made them look better then they are defensively or it was just one of those games they "got up" for.

This should be a game Doke dominates unless he's in foul trouble. They have nothing to guard him with. The OU game though has changed the entire complexion of how he'll be guarded going forward. Guys are being instructed to foul as hard as they can or intentionally prevent him from shooting.

Hopefully we'll have a better idea on how to guard Diarra 2nd time around. He was a big reason K-St was in it at Allen. With some additional film on him now hopefully guys are smarter on how they guard him.

The comment section in that update was some kind of stupid. wow.

Dad certainly wants him to announce with all the family planning to go to Atlanta. I don't see him doing it then but something to keep our eye on

@jaybate-1.0

Malik is 50% from 3 last three games, 43% last 5, 41% last 6 dating back to the "breakout game" vs ISU.

Just as encouraging- 55% from the field in the last 3 games. He's playing well

@dylans

The only thing I would add to the whole Silvio discussion is 2 minutes of game action is a poor test of progress. It's likely given the lack of bodies in the post that he's performed better in practice then in the games otherwise wouldn't you think he wouldn't play at all?. That WVU game where he had a few good plays felt like the ceiling I think most of us are wishing he'd get to. Come in rebound and get an occasional bucket or 2. Can't say he's had much of a chance to do that recently.

What I've been concerned with the most with him is the lack of the basics, "doing your job". You know setting a screen without getting called for a foul, or not catching a entry pass cleanly etc, or fouling someone as soon as they touch the ball in the post against you. Stuff that Silvio should already be generally okay at doing. This kid has played against guys older and just as talented as him for years with his national team and in other settings. So the fact that he's looking so lost out there at times is concerning. It's all mental for him.

@BeddieKU23 Yeah, the team goes to crap when Devonte' is on the bench. I hope he's getting used to the minutes I doubt they go down in March. The good thing about the tourney is there are a little longer breaks during the game. It partially eliminates the advantage that deep teams have.

Yeah the minutes are here to stay I think as well.

There is hope that Newman's play lately could at least afford Self to sub him in and out near TV timeout's. I really don't know if an extra minute does anything here and there at this point though. Graham is just too valuable at this point to take out unless he got himself into foul trouble. We just have to continue to bank on Devonte being the best version of himself almost every night, this teams life depends on it

Howard has done a great job this year. You wonder how much an assistant is in play with a guy like Romeo who is going to be in school for less then a year. Langford looks improved from his earlier days. I don't know much about the competition but its hard not envisioning him and Grimes just tearing it up next season.

@Jayballer54

I think Graham will play well tonight. Normally these are the type of situations he comes through in.

I like the matchup on offense for Garrett against Wade if that happens. Marcus can get by him, same with Svi. But if we can't guard him on the other end its not going to matter much what advantage we may have against him

things that seem clear • Jan 29, 2018 01:25 PM

@Jayballer54

I agree he should have played more against Texas A&M. We were winning comfortably the entire game and it would have been nice to see him establish some rhythm with the team at home.

If he wants Silvio to be a reliable option by March the kid needs a chance to prove himself. At this point we've seen he's not ready. Maybe a week from now its different, maybe 3 weeks from now. Who knows really.

things that seem clear • Jan 29, 2018 01:18 PM

@Jayballer54

I know we focus so much on KU however there are plenty of players in the Big-12 playing as many minutes as Devonte. Let's take a look.

Young- Sat 32 minutes sat in 9 games or 3.5 roughly a game

Dean Wade- 20 minutes sat in 8 games (not counting one he sat 16 in a blowout loss to Tech).

Carter- 22 minutes sat in 9 games

Weiler-Babb- playing 37 minutes a game for ISU

Brown- 17 minutes sat in 9 games (played 40 last 3)

I would love to see Devonte getting some rest. Part of that is on coach for not trusting the team to operate without him. Part of it is Graham wants to be out there. Self hates watching his team not do its job so its easy to see why Devonte plays so much. Devonte just has to fight through this as other guys are.

Looking at the Big-12 games during the week tonight becomes a must win game. Everyone else contending has games they are expected to win going into Saturday. Going 2-0 this week is crucial.

If after Saturday KU could be 8-2..

Tech - 5-3 coming in, home vs Tech (likely win), @ TCU Saturday (toss up).

WVU- 5-3 coming in, @ Iowa St (likely win), home vs Kansas St Saturday

K-St - 5-3 coming in, home vs KU, @ WVU Saturday (can be 5-5 after Saturday and shatter Bruce's dreams)

OU- 5-3 coming in, home vs Baylor, @ Texas Saturday (Toss up)

Can't lose tonight

things that seem clear • Jan 29, 2018 11:42 AM

What's Silvio supposed to do? He puts him out there for 2 minutes. That's what maybe 4-5 possessions. Either Self has to commit to letting him play through mistakes or its never going to work. Silvio is sped up and rightfully so. I'm sure he also has it in his head that any mistake gets him on the bench. With the way Mitch is playing we can afford to have Silvio going through this adjustment period.

After tonight we have 2 home games in a row, Oklahoma St would be a great game to just let him play without the fear of the quick hook. This next week could be crucial to his development

Wade killed us in the first game being guarded by Svi. We have no other option unfortunately. I would put Marcus on him when he comes in though, longer arms and just a better defender.

Wade is shooting 53% from 3 at home, have to guard him closely outside.

Devonte has to snap out of this funk he's in. Missing way too many shots lately and I'm sure playing 40 minutes doesn't help. We usually play well in Manhattan. Have to survive the first 4

I wouldn't mind getting both. It looks as if all the attention KU has started to give Ogbaji has gotten other coaches looking in as well. I wouldn't be surprised to see his offer list continue to grow.

As for Romeo I've seen enough now, he's a MUST get.

His game is so smooth like Grimes. We can't let this one get away. We better not let him get away

Cunliffe and Bill's Messages to Him • Jan 27, 2018 12:04 AM

@Jayballer54

I just feel maybe we are overreacting to him not playing and just automatically assuming the worst. Our thoughts certainly could be right but id like to see him stick it out especially with how many guards could be leaving the program at seasons end.

In the end Sam not playing is his own fault, he had a full year to get on board with his coach and figure this out. We have seen some promise, some typical issues that are expected of guys who need time in the system. It's entirely possible Sam didn't pick the right spot to transfer into and expect immediate playing time with how the roster is perimeter heavy. Simply waiting his turn could be the best thing he could do right now and take everything his coaches are telling him in a positive way

Cunliffe and Bill's Messages to Him • Jan 26, 2018 10:30 PM

@BShark

I would like to stay away from saying that just yet because transferring again would just seem redicilous for him, he could have just sat this semester and still had 3 to play 3. We will certainly see how he responds to his coaches words and the toughening of not playing right now. I always thought his best ball would be after this year. However I did think he'd play every game so I'm perplexed at our starters playing so many minutes still

@BeddieKU23 Vick is just lost. It's puzzling. Seems like he's deferring more. That might have something to do with Newman coming on. Not sure why though. Newman coming on shouldn't stop him for sticking a J or slamming in some dude's face.

Yeah he shouldn't be deferring but he is and there's zero confidence in his shot right now. There was one shot he took where they ran pick and pop with him, wide open barely made rim. His whole shot seems off, almost as if he changed it up to a shorter release. We have seen very little of his midrange game that we know he has as well. Above everything I'm just noticing what looks like disinterest. He should be our best perimeter defender and should absolutely be someone we rely on to get to the rim consistently and we get a ton of softness. I know that's critical but I would imagine Self is just as hard on him lately. Hopefully tomm we see some better play, it's all we can hope for right now

@Jayballer54 KK brought up something yesterday on the radio. When the opponent reaches the 1 and 1 in fouls in the first half why wouldn't opposing coaches foul Doke the next 3 times down the floor until they reach the double bonus? It would seem to be a great way to get a stop, especially if KU is on a roll and has the momentum. Doke is unlikely to make more than 1 or 2.

The point being that this might not only be an end game strategy for the rest of the season.

Even less likely to make the first too. I can't remember more then 5-6 times he's made the first all year

Cunliffe and Bill's Messages to Him • Jan 26, 2018 07:27 PM

Well said, Newman certainly has busted his rear on rebounds lately. His shot is gaining confidence and we're seeing more flashes from him. This is a guy that could easily score 30 in a game for us at some point. I would actually like to see more offense run his way the way he's performed lately. There were stretches in the OU game where he wasn't involved. If he's a guy that can get 20+ efficiently every few games we're talking a 3 headed perimeter monster. Now if we could only figure out Vick. Seems frazzled by Malik emerging. Is that something you've noticed?

I agree. Very few games and none recently when KU has been run in on all cylinders. Hopefully Coach Self can tune up the team and have running on all cylinders in the near future and definitely by post season.

I can't even remember a game we had 3/4 of all cylinders going well. Every game is a struggle in some capacity. I don't know if that ultimately means we are a fatally flawed team or one that's going to get there. Still holding out hope on the latter

Guys I' need some info - -I'm confused • Jan 26, 2018 06:50 PM

@Jayballer54

I'm sure Vick's decision has an impact on his own decision. Since he didn't want to sign early he has zero incentive to end it until the Spring Signing Period anyway. He can continue to be recruited and get attention at the Burger Boy and Jordan Game and soak it all in. If Newman and Vick move on I fully expect him to sign with us.

Guys I' need some info - -I'm confused • Jan 26, 2018 06:41 PM

@JayHawkFanToo

I liked Self's comments about Vick this week. Shows you how far away he's from being a pro right now. In his current state of mind it would be a big mistake for him to leave. He's just not there yet. Who knows though we've seen guys that barely played here go pro and seen guys that played a ton return for bigger roles the following year.

I agree we've seen the rise and fall of Newman and Vick almost simultaneously. Having Newman playing well is great but we've also seen how much of an impact Vick not playing well is having on things. On nights where Devonte doesn't shoot the ball well we can ill afford another starter playing poorly. If we ever got say a 6 game stretch (hint hint) where all 3 + Svi brought their A games we'd be having ourselves a fantastic off-season
