I can't go into details, but Grimes is the one I'd be most concerned with out of this class.

Day dreaming about next years team • Jan 19, 2018 05:02 PM

Next year looks very exciting.

I still think Azubuike leaves despite all the things he could continue to work on here. Would love to be wrong as well but my gut says he goes and tries to figure it out anyway. If he returns we have some serious title aspirations.

Just pencil in Dotson/Grimes starting now. Langford too if he comes. If Vick returns then we don't get Romeo and he'll be the senior leader of the perimeter. Moore, Garrett, Cunliffe- great depth and lineup flexibility.

Even if Doke left we start Dedric and Silvio next season. Bash brothers. Lightfoot, KJ & Big Dave rotating. We won't know what to do with 5-6 big men.

Certainly indicates at least 1 underclass guard is not coming back right? Of course I could be reading too much into that but you don't recruit multiple guards (Langford, Agbaji) for nothin'

In the article it mention Self wants to see him. If that happens soon as well, things could happen pretty fast I'd think. Agbaji is a real junkyard dog, not afraid to mix it up at all. We all know how Self values that. I think he'd be a pretty good 4-5 year program player/glue guy. Since he is local I'm planning to get out to a couple of games to make my own observations. It does look like he is more than a back-up plan for Romeo though.

Awesome I look forward to your observations.

Video's show he's certainly athletic enough to be at KU. Has solid form on his shot. I see some shades of Wayne Selden in him as far as body, athleticism.

Since his recruitment will likely go into the spring I see no reason why the staff shouldn't be aggressive getting a relationship with him started and seeing what happens. I imagine the kid must feel pretty excited that he went from a few offers to interest from KU. That's big time for any kid, especially local.

Who is our Barry Brown? • Jan 19, 2018 12:02 PM

Garrett would be the natural choice, he's played against Young before so he has some familiarity . Garrett being longer and having some defensive skill could make some of Young's shots more difficult to make. The issue with moving Marcus to guard Young is he extends the 3 pt line as far as he wants and that would take Garrett out of rebound situations.

If we take the defensive intensity we displayed in Morgantown to Norman I feel good about our chances in limiting him enough to win.

However KU hasn't defended consistently so I have no idea what we will see.

I know who I don't want guarding Trae.. That one is easy

Maybe you can answer me this...

The focus is on ranked opponents. But we see how teams ranking can move considerably during the season.

So... If we beat a team that is ranked #5 in November... and then that team screws up and falls out of the rankings. What counts in the selection? The early #5 ranking or non-ranking?

To me, it seems like the ranking at the time of the game is what should count. Teams level of play is going to change during the year as other teams learn their tendencies, injuries occur, etc etc etc. But what should count is our opponents' strength level at the time we play them!

Is that the way it works? I really know NOTHING about the selection process. I do know how to complain though!

Some good questions.

I think the Selection committee has done a better job of evaluating games in the context of which they are played. However I do believe its human nature to place bias on how a team is perceived to them when the committee gets to looking at selecting teams. I'm sure they are evaluating games all season, taking notes, noticing shifts in teams play, injuries etc. I do agree that when you play a team, the strength of the game should be based on that.

Why is there no news on Preston? • Jan 19, 2018 11:08 AM

At least we have Silvio. I think that was enough closure in this situation, at least for me. Silvio can play, no issues over his head. Self seems excited where he could get him by March.

NCAA Tourney Selection change • Jan 18, 2018 05:01 PM

@justanotherfan

It certainly hurts the mid-major programs where there's only 1 good team in the conference and they are so reliant on minimizing bad losses.

I didn't have a chance to dive into detail how this would affect everyone. At first glance it seemed it would expose those P5 teams that play so many home games against lower D-1 schools especially in non-conference play (Some Big-12 teams were guilty of this).

When looking at how this affected KU it certainly would seem to benefit them the way things are going. To date KU has only played 3 teams in C4 but has 6 wins in C1 already with at least 5-6 more chances coming up. I know the consensus was our non-conference schedule wasn't that hard however it looks like KU is still well positioned for a #1 seed if it continues to win.

Interesting change. Take KU's current record into this. This is using the RPI where KU is currently #5.

C1- Home- 0-2, Neutral- 2-0, Road- 4-0 (6-2) - 4 road victories in C1 is going to look nice coming seeding time!

C2- Home- 2-1, Neutral- 1-0, Road- 0-0 (3-1)

C3- Home-3-0, Neutral- 0-0, Road- 0-0 (3-0)

C4- Home- 3-0. Neutral- 0-0. Road- 0-0 (3-0)

Can Bruce help us out again? • Jan 17, 2018 07:33 PM

The two teams that have slowed Trae down have been able to play physical defense against him. Carter of WV did a great job on him weeks back and last night K-St had a great gameplan which they executed. K-St defended KU on Saturday as well as any team has all season so I don't find it surprising they were able to force Trae into a bad game.

What we are seeing with OU is the outcome of the games they play is so reliant on how well Trae plays. It's not surprising seems how this was an 11 win team last season without Young and Manek (who's quickly become their 2nd best player). His average game can win them games, his elite games have given them big wins but the games he struggles the rest of the team seems to suffer tremendously because of that. Given his high usage and being the focal part of the team that does explain a big part of it.

I"m hearing that Trae is wearing down. We know what that is like. I remember Frank being worn down by March. Heck, Frank was built to push it harder than Trae, too.

I try to watch OU when I have the chance. Trae is showing signs of wear.

Just a hunch but 3 days before his bad game against KSU he played 40 of 45 minutes in their overtime win against TCU. Have to think maybe that effort took something out of him as well as his young/inexperienced teammates. Watching last nights game looked like a typical team that struggled in a tough environment on the road, Trae pressed to make plays and that made things even worse for him and his team. KSU looked hungry to put their loss to KU behind them. They definitely seemed to have the momentum on their side.

KU v. Failor: Bring Your Sunglasses • Jan 17, 2018 03:23 PM

Baylor goes as far as Lecomte shoots or shoots them out of games. Only reliable perimeter shooter/scorer.

Maston has always played well against us for some reason.

They will muddy the game up in the first half until we figure out how to attack their matchup zone.

@drgnslayr

Svi has matured a ton as a senior. When he missed shots earlier in his career it affected his entire game including that silky smooth shot. Now he's learned to put the last play behind him and still make an impact. Its great seeing what he's become when he's locked in. His best play might have been that drive to the hoop late in the game, that's an aggressive play we are not accustomed to seeing from him.

Ok thanks I didn't realize there was another player around Carter, it just seemed like a blatant "we can't give WV's star player his 2nd" type in real time.

What about one of Devonte's drives in the 2nd half where D puts up a shot, Carter hits him from behind and they gave us the ball out of bounds. How do 3 ref's miss that?

In the second half Vick got called for a foul comitted by two WVU players on the guy Vick was chasing. Evidently the ref couldn't decide which WVU player to call it on and made the politically correct decision to call it on Vick. LaGerald looked away smiling.

Classic!

They also took away a foul in the first half from Jevon Carter and gave it to someone not in the play. Then when Carter picked up a 2nd half foul that should have been his 3rd it was only his 2nd.

I believe so he had 4 fouls in that one, Carter is a very aggressive defender easily leading the conference in steals.

drgnslayr said:

@BeddieKU23

Devonte can be a bit sneaky... I hope he plays sneaky tonight... and draws fouls on Carter. That is our clearest path to victory.

Get Carter in foul trouble!

Tech got Carter into foul trouble and he was forced to sit for a crucial stretch in the 2nd half that turned the game so that's a great point. He's definitely their catalyst. I hope Devonte's sneaky numbers of late (9 FT attempts per game in Conference Play) continues tonight

HighEliteMajor said:

@BeddieKU23 Here's hoping we're working on a press break that is fast, attacking, and makes WVU pay for pressing -- not the slow .. methodical .. lobs .. that permit opponents to dictate pace.

I think we hope for this every year and we get the same press break. I expect nothing different and hope to be surprised. A lot of guys making their first trip to Morgantown as rotation players- Doke, Mitch, Newman, Garrett, Cunliffe, De Sousa. I bet De Sousa is sparely used unless we get into foul trouble unfortunately.

Vegas line moved to 7 1/2 WV, up 3 points. Certainly not trending well in that regard.

The boys have to man up. Self can certainly facilitate that heading into tip.

Self said they spent 30 minutes practicing in-bounds plays against WV. Every year it never seems like enough time

@drgnslayr

This game is definitely a test on many levels. You have to beat WVU physically and mentally.

Usually KU comes into Morgantown and Huggy Bear is the underdog at home. This time WVU is favored and ranked higher. KU has played pretty well on the road this season however this will be the most hostile environment they have faced. We'll see whether either dynamic has any effect on the game.

I know Self doesn't like to play up the revenge factor but how could he ignore it here. 4 straight years we've been defeated in that building and a few of them have been embarrassing. I hope he plays with the emotions of Devonte & Svi up on that fact that they have never won in Morgantown and see how they respond. I would like to think that gets the competitive juices going.

The battle of the boards has never been so important. WV lives off 2nd chance pts and we all know how they force turnovers and create a certain physicality to the game. I'm watching these guys tonight on the "effort" chart. If we see guys matching the effort of the WV players we have to feel good about our chances.

Matchup of the game:

Carter vs Graham. Both players have improved tremendously as Sr's. Carter has really advanced his offensive game to match his defensive ability. Graham is so important to our offense so its going to be very interesting how Devonte gets his shots. Carter was the only guy this season to limit Trae Young from his usual spectacular game. I don't think we can win this one without DG having a good game, its vital we find ways to get him free.
