Jackson playing a little passive on offense so far

@BeddieKU23 if they call fouls like this he will get pt
Definitely but they swallow the whistle for Washburn they haven't gone more than 10 seconds on defense without fouling
@HawkChamp said:
@BeddieKU23 I normally don't talk about the refs, but some of this stuff is stupid. Doke's second was nonsense. Playing pretty well otherwise.
Case in point the foul Svi got a few minutes ago. Drove to the basket on the sideline a guy runs into his side and it's a foul on him?

Pound for pound, Lightfoot is a tough dude.
Hustles, definitely will be needed if he can find a niche
Vick I think was born making baskets
Ok i guess I don't understand the new rule book
Yeah just swallow the whistles refs my God I did not miss their less then mediocricy
Omg you gotta be kidding me with that foul on udoka
Lots of whistles on plays that should just be play on.
Ok start. Get the nerves out and dumb plays before we start to pull away.

All Great points.
Consistency is what we are used to, Consistency on the road would be a good starting spot. Our D sometimes stays in Lawrence in certain arena's. Sometimes we don't truly understand how much better KU plays at home on both ends of the floor.
Low Post D should be better in the Big-12 as we'll play some teams that lost everything in the post. When its not a stretch to say Landon Lucas is a top 5 big in the Big-12 this year you know the league is in transition. Absolutely no knock to Lucas, just pointing out the talent in the post is missing this year. It's a guard heavy league.
Which leads me to your points 3 & 4. Not sure we see that much improvement from #4 due to the rules of the game that keep changing (more emphasis on perimeter freedom). With so many good guards in the league we might find it hard to force turnovers consistently.
3 We'll have to see how this team meshes together and finds its identity.
I saw some Pelicans beat writer already lobbying for Diallo to be apart of the rotation a few days ago.
Yes a dominant defence against an overmatched team would be nice. Statistically we ended up pretty good on defense last year but there really was not a sense that it was a dominant defensive bunch. Plenty of games we wondered where the D went.
Individually Jackson on paper, seemed like the perfect Top recruit for Self. Values more then the flash of putting the ball in the hoop, fierce competitor, plays defense, values sharing the ball. From everything Self has said already about Josh "he unpacked his bags" was a good one used to describe the kids mentality.
Rudy looked great against Wiggins the other night. Forgot he still could ball that good which is easy to forget when you play for the Kings.
Blessing for Ben if he can get on a better team. He's played well so far to start the season so he's probably auditioning for his next contract. Were rumors he was trade bait, I'm sure he could be traded during the year
I have to ask, Did someone hit Bill in the head over the Summer?
How many years have we talked about playing smaller? How many years have we talked adaptability to your roster?
I'm not understanding this new Bill but I love it if he truly does adapt to this situation he has and finds a way to craft some more magic with it.
I think its more the organization that keeps another star from playing with boogie. But I do agree his attitude is not productive, will he ever mature?
Very true, I meant the recruiting hoopla that the last 7 months have been. So glad we have game action to look at. See how improved the vets are, see how the youngn's looks
More then anything I would like to see Jackson show off why he was the top recruit, a different type of top recruit. One that Self can mold and unleash
you really are going out on a limb.
should be a fun intro to this teams destruction of opponents
That was my other choice.
If we see small ball 15-20 minutes tonight I'm thinking Josh Jackson is a good bet.
So excited to see how Vick does tonight.
In general just excited the start of the season is here
I was thinking the same thing here but its a major advantage to the opposing wings. I don't remember Willis being this interchangeable athlete.
Good point, that is so true
What else are we supposed to do, we have overanalyzed 18 year old kids for the past 5 months :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:
I have plenty of them. It's an overrated bunch. I get it, its all for show and games. Kentucky could trot out 5 walkons and be ranked.
They return 2 players that were even apart of their rotation last year.
They are going to start at a minimum 3 Freshman. PG, SG, PF/C.
They are really thin in the back-court. Besides the freshman Fox and Monk + returning Briscoe they have little depth. Hawkins has been a career 3rd stringer, Mulder was brought in for practice depth.
No wings on the entire roster. 6 guys above 6'9, nobody 6'3+ to 6'9.
Other than Derek Willis & Malik Monk, little perimeter shooting. Briscoe shot 13%, Fox not an outside shooter with consistency, Hawkins a career 21% perimeter shooter.
We can praise their freshman, they are good- not at the level they have had in the past. I think Adebayo is their most important player because he can score and rebound. They have lots of length in the post but its young. It's just a very unbalanced roster banking of this latest batch of freshman being all-world everythings.
Site had a "power outage"! Reverted to I think January data
I started laughing at #2. Such a joke that the media thinks this is the 2nd best team to start the country. All personal feelings aside there is nothing that says #2 in the nation.
KU at #3. Good place to start.

Our coach would seem to disagree that our post play is going to make up for Ellis. It's why this 4 guard lineup has become a "thing" that may actually be used.
I do think Bragg has a big year and unless he's in big foul trouble in games he'll play because there's nothing behind him ready to play over him. Not saying someone should, but the drop off is going to be significant if Self went to a post instead of a big guard in substitution situations. I guess we'll start to find out tomorrow what our unknown post players can contribute to the team.
He is the option that presents itself when everyone else picks another school
Dixon definitely inherited an experience roster. Adding a top 50 PG recruit doesn't hurt either. I could see them being more competitive but he will still be working with a talent deficit.
Underwood's style of play could be interesting, he has 1 excellent player in Evans & one pain in the a#$ (Forte). Zero post depth, zero post presence. Likely to struggle but I'm sure they'll play lights out when we come to town. If it wasn't for Evans I would say this is the worst Big-12 team on paper.
Beard actually has the best situation for this year. Team made the tourney, 5 Senior's, 4 Junior's on this team. Will be interesting to see how they look
Yes, Garrett is a PG and he's big for the position. "Combo Guard" would probably be a more appropriate title for him. He could potentially guard positions 1-3 in college because of his size. Exciting prospect, could be underrated. If he continues to develop his shooting, he's got a similar development arc as Devonte.
Well Kentucky and Duke are about to see a lot of their targets start making decisions. 12 recruits could pick either program between now and the spring.
Kentucky is in on 9 of the remaining unsigned. They will sign PJ Washington #16, Nick Richards #11. Petty just canceled his UK visit so it looks likely he'll go to Bama with Sexton. Trae Young, Bamba, Diallo & Vanderbilt could all end up in Lexington as well.
Duke has Knox & Trent in the bag. I think they will get Carter as well. Coleman is a Duke/Texas battle. Bamba is a toss up battle between UK/Duke.
The first part, he could do no better then working with Hudy.
The 2nd part, not worrying about coming out of the game, typical today's response from these kids. I'm sure Avery said you'll play 40 minutes, we don't have a backup PG. Playing in front of family, well Bama lot closer then Lawrence for his folks..
A lot of wasted recruiting efforts to be runner-ups..
We can cross off Sexton if this quote is correct.
“I will base my decision off of the best fit for me to come in and get stronger, faster and develop as an all-around player and person,” he told MADEHoops. “I want to be able to make mistakes without looking over my shoulder to see if I'm going to get taken out the game. I want to play my game on the court. I also would like for my family to be able to go to the games and support me.”
good debuts from our future stars.
Embiid's first bucket of his career, you can't teach that. Then drilled a 3 after that. Limitless potential.
Wigs looked really good, can tell he's put in work on his game. That 1-2 punch with Towns is exciting
Yeah reading his comments he was high on staying home.
Well you totally took that out of context, I was joking so as you said believe what you want. If anything I was feeding into what you were saying. KU just lost a Top 18 recruit to Saint Louis!
More mind-boggling is a Top-10 recruit thinking Travis Ford is going to further your career. He's a guard coach, nothing else
If you want some more the "sky is falling material" Carte'Are Gordon a top 20 2018 PF considered to have been a KU lock will announce for Saint Louis today at 2:30. Can't make this up
Correction he already committed. lol the check cleared for Travis Ford!
To be fair I'm sure opposing teams say the same thing about KU in Allen Fieldhouse. Plenty were pissed about Mason's play in the OU game where he stepped over the end line to deflect a pass Hield was trying to inbound if I'm correctly remembering.
But yes there are places we go often that the foul disparity or the ref's seemed to be biased to the home team. The home team ref's seem to be a bigger issue then any one issue with the rules themselves
Good way to spin it positively!!
Another excuse for Duke to downplay a potential loss, as well as the media. They will damage control this to a T
With these new rules, I'm not sure Huggins will have enough players to play. Can they play managers/water boys?
But I'm sure the foul disparity in Morgantown this year will read KU 14 1st half fouls, WV 5. Does that sounds unlikely? I think not.
As @wissoxfan83 said experimenting only using the last 2 minutes may yield a sample size of what? 10? If the whole game could use this rule they might actually have a good enough sample size to make a judgement on this going forward. I don't understand it at all.
Article is long, but does give an overview of where things at/or lack their of at this moment. At this point if they keep it from page 1 news this might just go away without anyone knowing.
The latest is the NCAA rejects UNC's response to their amended watered down Notice of Allegations. Oh the big bad wolf just barked back!
The only people who will ever win this case are the Lawyer's that get paid. Anyone expecting Justice for the sham classes etc will be getting a rude awakening
I certainly imagine scenario #1 being more likely than them being undefeated and winning their early Big-12 games. Undefeated is not out of reality considering how poor the competition is but it's K-St we are talking so really I expect them to lose.
Will have to see how the defensive foul/offensive motion is called before I judge it. They said that both actions often occurred 50-60% of the time at the same time so instead of picking a side they will now call it both ways.
Since Self said this I have thought its because we are that thin in the post and its to minimize weaknesses.
I think putting your best players on the floor is also important and we are in a situation to do that with our 5 perimeter players.
Think about the ISU matchup for just one minute. They will play no one over 6'8 all year. We could play all our guards 1-5 and matchup identically.
I believe the other rules will be more important then this one. This is just a test and will only be allowed with under 2 minutes to go in a game. Seems rather insignificant when there is 38 more minutes played in a game.
- Coaches got some of their calling-timeout capability back
Last season, the most common lament from coaches was how they could not call a timeout in any live-ball situation. That is still the case ... mostly. Now, coaches will have the ability to call a timeout when a ball is "live" after a made basket on an inbound situation.
- Double-foul calls are going to rise dramatically this season
Post play physicality and "rebounding displacement" are two huge points of emphasis. The latter is mostly about officials' placement on the floor, but the former is going to take teams and coaches time to adjust. To put it frankly, when a guy with the ball is in the post, he can "shape up" by bending his elbows. He cannot use his arms to prevent a defender from getting around him, though. If that happens, it's now an automatic foul.
Alternatively, when a defender in the post "lays" on an offensive player or attempts to put a hand through or go under the offensive player's arm -- it's called "swim-stroking" -- that's a foul. The legal way to defend is to get around the player, to front him or to "three-quarter" him. A single forearm is legal in post area, but a defender can't use a forearm and a hand.
- Travels are also going to spike
Collins calls it a "focus on obvious travels on the perimeter and post travels -- picking up the pivot foot."
It's become normal basketball movement to accept a pass and then take a tiny hop to set/square one's self. That's technically a travel. It will now be called as such.
-
Charges should continue to go down, and the Big Ten and MAC are going to conduct an unprecedented review experiment
-
Offensive players will be granted more natural movement with the ball
This is a point of emphasis that should allow for a freer game on both ends. Offensive and defensive players are allowed a certain amount of space to make natural, normal basketball moves. For the offense, a "normal basketball play" starts with either a shot attempt, a pass or a dribble. In a sentence: An offensive player should be able to make a move without having someone jamming up on them and restricting them.
Collins said when teams trap or double team, fouls will likely go up as players and coaches adapt to the nuanced difference between resolute defense vs. completing impeding an offensive player's rightful space to make a basketball move. Defense is important, but smothering a player to the point of paralysis is no longer allowed.
there we go, he's more at home in that photo. Bet he'd miss his kids wedding if KU was playing @ Iowa St on the same day
That's how I see it as well, hard to find expected wins for them especially early in conference play. Washington St is not a good team outside of its big man. Colorado St has been competitive they could beat KSU. Not sure what Ford is going to do at St. Louis in year one given they were not a very good team last season.
To be fair I don't think K-St will be terrible this season, Wade, Iwundu & Brown should keep them in games and DJ Johnson was a guy who matched up well against us last year. But outside their starting lineup its really bad, maybe a freshman like Sneed becomes a good rotation player for them. That's about as nice as I can be without remembering who coaches them and how much of their life they spend trying to beat us.
