TOURNAMENT?? PLAYOFFS?? It’s nov 2 and you’re talking about TOURNAMENT??

😄
Hey let’s enjoy the season ... that’s the beauty of the schedule... we get exhibition, fun non conf games then conference battle ( my personal favorite time of the season) then B12 tourney and THEN we get the NCAA hunger games ... we obviously have a great team, so buckle up and ENJOY😀

A LOT to like about Garret, but I love how he finds an open space on the move and pulls up for a short to medium jumper instead of driving to the basket and into defenders.
I’ve thought all along that there are not enough guys who look for that and can execute it. Three ball and driving seem to be the majority plays in D1 ball.

@drgnslayr

Cool - what team in Europe did you play for ?

Jam Tray in Greece • Oct 14, 2017 12:52 PM

Yes it's hard to find credible up-to-date info on eurobasketball salaries

Here is a recent quote from livestrong.com

"The salaries for European men's league basketball players vary greatly on the league, country and situation, as many times players are given cars, houses or gifts in addition to monetary income. The average team salary for a team in Europe is about $17 million, with teams in Greece, Russia, Spain and Italy often having bigger budgets. The highest-paid European players make between $2.8 million to $5.3 million."

My guess is Jamari was well informed about Greece's past instances of not paying basketball salaries on time or at all, and probably got a guaranteed money contract - also it's pretty clear it was more money that the Oberwart Gunners were paying him :)

Jam Tray in Greece • Oct 10, 2017 11:41 PM

Haven't been on buckets in a while (obviously )
Thanks for posting on JamTray
I actually followed all his games last season with the Oberwart Gunners
He had a very good year was a starter and as far I could research, made some Solid $$ ( I've read that a lot of euroleagues pay for housing and a car and the salary is tax exempt ?)
on To Greece and hopefully higher competition and $$

NBA Summer League • Jul 11, 2017 11:09 PM

Well I Think we all agree here that theoretically FM COULD play in the NBA - he has high B-Ball IQ, enough speed and skills and great team qualities and is a winner and always will be - period
( we all love him right ??? )

The question is what gm or team would want to invest the time and effort on him when they have soooo many guys to draw from all the time - the instant gratification league. The worldwide pool of talent vs the openings is unrivaled in pro sports to my knowledge

I agree that he should look to Europe - the pay, the consistency and solvency and level of play has increased substantially and FM could shine there and bank $

The d- league shuffle is a hard road and the promise of a big payday is tricky and fleeting and far from a high percentage gamble

Josh really irritated the celtics. • Jun 23, 2017 06:04 PM

And yet, Josh really meant it when he was quoted as saying that the teams who passed on him will regret it (most pointedly the celts and LA)
He's got the MJ mindset for sure... let's see if he can back it up. I'll be rooting hard for him.

Josh quotes from draft • Jun 23, 2017 03:58 AM

This from Dan Bickley of AZCentral:

When asked what makes him different, Jackson had this to say on Thursday night:

“I think my versatility, just my competitive spirit. I don’t think the other guys in this draft really care as much as I do. I don’t think they play as hard as I do, period. I think that’s what really makes me special. I refuse to fail, period.”

An ESPN commentator said Jackson “has a chip on both shoulders.” Fran Fraschilla, a former coach turned analyst, once noted that Jackson had a compulsive need to win every single drill.

“If you ask me, of course I’m going to say I’m the best player in this draft,” Jackson said. “But if you ask those other guys, they’re going to say the same things about themselves, I’m sure. But I just love competition, and I love proving people wrong."

“I’ve been drafted to Phoenix, and I’m going to go there and make the best of it. I’m going to be the best player I can be. And those teams who didn’t draft me, one day they will be sorry.”

This mindset remind you of anyone ?

I live in Celtic country, and although not really a fan, I was hoping they would get JJ just so I could watch him on tv a lot...
He is never going to forget the teams who passed him up - ever. That is how he is wired.

He must be waiting for some info from various pro leagues besides the NBA - I'm sure he knows now what the scoop is with advice concerning the NBA.

Well, I'm with Dslayer

I have decided I like the perceived underdog status as compared to the Big Nike 3. If one is a U.K. Or NC fan, you get a ton of revolving door players, and let's face it - only one way to go -down, because you are expected to win or final four pretty much every year.
Adidas may make us have to be more resourceful, more creative, and Self has to coach hard to overcome fast twitch one or 2 year recruits who will pile up at the big Nike 3.

We have become transfer U because Self is looking for that edge. We are innovators, we are clawing and scraping to stay competitive.

We are unique. We are not a Nike-greased NBA feeding system like the big three. We are Kansas. The trick is to embrace what we have, who we are, and stop thinking that a Nat Championship is The Whole enchilada, and the sole reason for KU basketball.
Think of the guys we have had the immense pleasure of seeing for 3 or 4 years... the great games, the energy, the love, the feeling of being part of something special and great.
we will win a NC at some point... but enjoy the journey until we do.
No one gets to the end of the line here on gods green earth and thinks, looks at all the awards and accomplishments I have seen or done... they realize that's is about relationships and connection to those people and things they love.

We are Kansas basketball and it is a beautiful thing

Kansas Lands Poetic Big... • May 03, 2017 08:24 PM

Nice clip package of Whitman
First, he most DEFINITELY has more offensive moves that Landen .
And he knows how to bang bodies underneath and is not scared of making moves and making his own offense... can he block shots??

@Hawk8086

I'm not understanding why Coleby would transfer ? he looked stronger and stronger late in the season and was a banger - S of loves a banger
Bragg and light foot weren't strong underneath

Yes well the "crootin " thread # 3 is up to 510 responses, so I believe that when we get a new player, he deserves his own post for sure !

So National Championships Matter? • Apr 22, 2017 05:10 PM

Drgnslayr said "Life really isn’t about winning the big prize. It’s about the journey. I know people hear that all the time and often dismiss it, but it is the truth. I really enjoy this journey, ..."

Me too - well said. Love the journey. The journey has been a source of joy and excitement and passion and fun (and yes pain too, but hey anything worth caring about involves some pain) I love the program, and think we are lucky to be fans.
And yes , hopefully soon, one of our teams will make it thru the 6 game gauntlet to win the Championship and there will be much rejoicing

So National Championships Matter? • Apr 21, 2017 03:56 AM

Well, if one follows this line of logic, then KU is an underdog! We can't recruit like the east coast gold standard programs do, so we have to rely on transfers, Midwest recruits, mining hidden gems (like the guy we got 4 years ago who originally signed with Appalachian state), and yes, superior coaching. our coach is ... well let's just say most off us wouldnt trade him for anyone in the game right now.
We have to work harder to beat the east coast giants.!!!

So who doesn't love rooting for an underdog?? This is what makes it sweeter when we do win a national championship ( and we will, odds are going to eventually fall in our favor)

Is March Maddness a Sham? • Apr 11, 2017 02:09 AM

It is its own unique animal - and it is kind of outside the normal season.

The goal of any team is to win games, and win its "division" and to qualify for some sort of post season play. But there are 68 frigging teams that qualify for the big dance and it is of course a SINGLE GAME ELIMINATION affair, so yes you are correct, does the "best" college team win the NCAA ? Not really..

if KU gets by Oregon (and I'm guessing say 7 times out of 10 playing them they would beat them) do they beat NC? Who knows? Does gonzaga beat NC in a 3 out of 5? I like their odds to do that. Bill Walton, a veteran of many NCAA tourneys, when asked repeatedly who he liked to win the tourney this year refused to pick anybody and just said over and over "it comes down to how you play that given night " damn straight.

They are college kids, not seasoned pros, and there really isn't a magic formula.

Years ago I made my peace with the tourney. For me It does not define the whole season or the whole achievement of any given KU squad... it is fun, painful, a carnival ride and a combination of skill, luck, and timing, but not representative of the big amalgam of the identity of a given team.

the season has 4 sections basically - pre-conference, conference play, the b12 tourney then the big crazy NCAA roulette wheel.
I LOVE the conference play - it is intense and we get to play teams twice over the course of 2 months, so we really get a sense of our teams strengths and weaknesses, then senior night !! Seeing 4 year players tear up on senior night is what I love about KU b-ball ... seriously. I feel connected to them and the whole program and the specialness of it all.

Or we could load up with a revolving door of OADS and TADS and maybe win some more NCAA championships ... you pick what you would rather have.

DG news! • Apr 10, 2017 02:28 AM

A question... I love devonte and am so so glad he's staying, but he can't do the things frank did...
who will drive and draw fouls like frank did? Frank could singlehandedly take over and change the nature of a game by driving and either scoring or getting to the line

Cole Aldrich: Smartest Guy in the Arena • Apr 07, 2017 11:45 PM

The biggest problem with the National Boring Association is 82 regular season games and over 50% of the league getting into the "playoffs" or better known as the real season..
It is next to impossible to maintain any real sustained level of competitive play over this ridiculous amount of games, so players have to pick and choose their spots, pace themselves, and trust that they have enough left to play hard in the second season.
I went to a celtics game this year (against the rockets) and stunned by the lack of consistent defense... only in the end of the 4th quarter (game was fairly close) did players try hard defensively...

the whole thing was oddly depressing, and a far far contrast to when I used to attend celtics games in the 80's ...

@jayballer54
Arguably your best post all year ... count agree with your stats and big-picture logic more.

All valid thought on this thread.

We are going to continue to live with this reality of KU-should-at-least-be-a-FF-team-every-year expectations because of the excellence of our coach and the program. It doesn't look like anytime soon KU will be in a prolonged downswing in terms of basketball prowess.

Now, there can be an argument made (as has been make hundreds of times on this site) that perhaps recruiting more quality players will help us come tournament time. NC this year was not thought to be a front runner early in the season, but they seem to be gelling at the right time, and of course they have lots of talent in all positions. Nike school 😒

In terms of pure coaching, honestly, I really don't see other top tier coaches being any better than Self, and Self went with the flow this year and adapted. Almost all his players seem to love respect and revere him, because he is tough as hell but fair.

Can he figure out how to be a better motivator come tourney time? Yes in my opinion.. I'm guessing he is pondering that right now.
But honestly, the guys we had this year really didn't need motivating, they knew how take care of business in all kinds of hostile environments.
I am somewhat shocked that the Oregon game wasn't closer at the end, because that was our stock in trade this year.

Deep Dive : Session 1 • Mar 26, 2017 11:52 PM

Being a fan is emotionally based... it's a kind of relationship that happens to us...
we hurt because we care, that simple.
in the case of KU, it's 90% a positive one because we get good players, we have a great program, and a hell of a great coach, so we win way more that we lose. Losing hurts, winning feels good 🙂
About 15 years ago, I have kind of made my peace with the tourney - it is what it is, and I feel positive that one day soon we will have the team, the luck , and the stars aligning at the right time and win one.

Congrats Frank Martin • Mar 26, 2017 09:01 PM

Gonzaga - first time final four.
Oregon - first FF since 1939 - 78 years ago.
South Carolina - first time in.

This is why it's so great ... and this is why it's almost impossible to pick.
You can't just be a good team on paper, you have to find a way to not have a bad game, be lucky, and catch magical momentum.

Bill Self sucked last night. • Mar 26, 2017 07:33 PM

@wissox
Were it that easy... Oregon was the best team LAST NIGHT- that does not nessarily translate into the best team overall or the best team for two more games.
That is the essence of the tourney - just ask guys who have actually played in it (I haven't ) it's how you play that GIVEN DAY.

we shot 20% from 3 last nite... when's the last time KU did that??

This is getting tiring. • Mar 26, 2017 01:55 PM

@chriz
Welcome to college basketball and the NCAA tournament !
There are no 3-out-of-5 or 4-out-of-7 rounds here, just college age kids play a single game elimination tourney.

We may have gone as far as we could without a true dominant post player.
But one thing we had this year was guys who could gut out close games and rise to the occasion- except for last night when they went flat. I truly didn't expect that.
We had a decent bracket too this year, certainly doable in theory.
The tourney-defines-our-whole-season folks on this board will of course point out that Self once again fall short of the final four, but so did Duke this year, and after today, so will NC or Kensucky.
Self changed, relaxed, adjusted and let his team play a different style this year. That style was remarkably effective. We were ranked #1 without a dominant big guy. Self is a great coach period.

And lastly, we are in a sense a victim of our own success. We are almost never the underdog, and underdogs in this tourney, remember they are college kids, get crazy motivated to play out of their minds... (we were an underdog in 2012, and we went to the final game). would anybody be surprised if Oregon fell flat on their face next weekend? Or continued to play amazingly?
Luck is a big factor here too. Oregon needed to have a great night, and for us to have a flat night, and that's exactly what happened.

And I can't believe gonzaga with all their success over the years, has NEVER been to the final four- wow.

Reverse 360 • Mar 24, 2017 02:01 PM

I know I was screaming at the tv the instant I saw Vick starting a 360... and thinking that if he missed it I was going to go as apoplectic as Self

Since I have neither the basketball acumen nor the attention span to write a weighty analysis on KU's play in the tournament or tonite' game, I am left with random musings...

1) Frank , Devonte and Josh are never afraid to shoot no matter the situation - ever. Players like them with brass cahones are pure money in the tourney when the stakes get so high

2) swarming pestering help on D by our quick guards and josh neutralized purdues twin towers, even when it looked like they were going to take over. I am now not as afraid of whatever big men we now will face, because we seem to find a way.

3) josh does sooooo many things even when he is not shooting well and turning over the ball on offense. He is everywhere - I honestly don't remember Wiggins throwing himself around like this- he finds a way to be a net positive. He has one speed - 11

4) one minute Purdue was hanging tough, keeping the score close, playing confidently and stoutly, and then in the seeming blink of an eye they were down by 15 and the wind knocked completely out of them.
Commentators used the word "avalanche " to describe it - the Kansas Avalanche- I like it .

5) I'm a the-tournament-does-not-define-our-season guy. (I'm guessing I'm in the minority somewhat about this issue of how important the big dance is in defining success) 13 B12 titles in a row is a monumental Achievement, so I am already a happy camperino (Flanders )
But of course this team is certainly good enough to win a championship, (if only skill alone were the defining factor in winning the dance) so I stand by my statement a month ago that I of course would be disappointed by a first weekend loss, pretty disappointed by a 16 loss, and mildly disappointed by an 8 loss, and be happy for a final four. Anything past that is gravy for me, so let's keep the gravy flowing !

6) West Virginia shot like 26% against 40-plus % shooting of Gonzaga and the game still came down to one possession. Gonzagas coach said it was the toughest most physical opponent his team has has in SEVERAL YEARS. Yes, folks the B12 is tough, and the west coast conference is not. I am not afraid of gonzaga at this point.

7) is it me, or is our defense waaaaay better in the past 3 games?

8 keep shooting the three ball boys... no time to stop fools gold avalanche now ::laughing:

The March To (And Through) KC • Mar 21, 2017 02:00 AM

Interesting that coach Self possibly leaving was brought up in this thread. Didn't see that coming.

I don't see that happening AT ALL. Something bad would have to happen at Kansas to make him even think about leaving. It would have to be a big disagreement with the school, some sort of scandal maybe...
Or a medical issue. but he is God at KU.
NBA ?? Please.
NEVER happen. He does not need another dime in his life, he is not ego driven like some other coache$, and babysitting bored primadonna millionaire head cases in the 82 reg-season-games schlepathon that is the National Boring Association is just the absolute WORST fit for who Coach Self is and what He lives for. You see him get emotional on senior night?? THATS what he lives for- teaching, shaping and molding young men's lives. He has arguably the best coaching job in all of D1 and he knows it- believe me. He is 55 and his best coaching years are ahead of him, and he's just getting started

Nice post as usual...
and it's a nice campus and nice part of the world..

We toured it twice two years ago for eldest daughter (she wanted to major in bio-med engineering) She got in, really wanted to go, but $58K a year and no scholarship help, plus they even told us they will be raising tuition every year for out-of-staters.. gulp. Wisely she decided to not be in hock for undergrad and declined.

So she ended up (quite happily and WAY more affordable) at let's just say, a KU rival school :smirk:

I'm Happy With This Season IF........ • Mar 14, 2017 02:47 AM

Joeloveshawks post pretty much says it all for me.
This has been a GREAT season for so many reasons. For years I have been able to separate out the different parts of the season, and the NCAA tourney is a combo of funhouse ride/hunger games that is stuck at the end, and it does not feel like a continuium of the season for me.

Not getting out of this weekend would of course be a BIG FAT bummer.

But the biggest problem I have this time of year is the prospect of not seeing another KU game til november 2017... HATE that

So - our 2nd game is potentially mich state, and our third is iowa state ??
What the hell ?

Something • Mar 11, 2017 03:27 PM

I feel the same way... when I watch other good teams, they just seem to flow and score so easily.. but I was informed by other board members that the defense being played is not great, which makes for the easy flowing offense. It can be Decieving. NC looked like it had the game wrapped up yesterday, but duke came back late to win. TCU shot close to 60% against us, then just 40% the next day to lose badly.

KU is a very good team, but the tourney is tricky at best... it's how you play THAT GIVEN DAY. PERIOD.

looks like Arizona may be in our bracket (Lunardi espn bracketology) and they can "flow" with the best of them.
