All home team wins so far. Let's hope that continues.... ;)
@Kcmatt7 I don't know if we are THAT bad on defense, but we are pretty close to that. Lost in the headiness of the win is that TTU scored 75 in regulation and 91 total with Shannon and McCullar going 2-21 from the field and 0-11 from 3 - two double digit scorers. And, I don't believe for a minute that is solely the product of great defense by our guys. You would think that we would win going away, especially at home. This is statistically the worst defensive team of the Self era, and by a fair margin.
As noted in another thread, this doesn't augur well for the Hawks in the tournament. Poor defensive teams do not win championships. It usually is balance, but the bias is definitely toward defensive superiority. Good college defensive teams can almost always shut or slow down good, even really good, college offenses. Look at Gonzaga this year. Only held under 80 twice this year. Put up 100+ over the best teams in their conferences - those teams, like BYU are pretty good offensively, but don't play defense. TTU was one of the two teams to hold them under 80 - gave up 69 (interestingly, the other was Tarelton). Last year, everyone assumed that Gonzaga would roll to the title given how good they were offensively, but Baylor really dominated them defensively.
This year may turn out to be an exception, as there are only a couple of top 10 defenses in Kenpom's top 10 aggregate, but we'll see. That's not meant to take away from the grit and fight the boys have shown. Finding a way to win like they have goes a long way - but, man, it's been a knife's edge...

@BeddieKU23 Dropped to 50th D rating on Kenpom....
If history is any guide, that doesn't augur well for our tournament chances - don't think there has been a champion in past decade or two with anything close to that defensive ranking.

@DCHawker honestly this is the time to play 5 guards and Jalen at the 5. Clear the lane
I'm fine with that. But, I'm also fine with Dave as long as we aren't making him play back to the basket. All is points should come on put backs and drive and dish. That's it...
@Kcmatt7 said in Payback Tech Game Thread:
If we would quit making god awful post passes we might be up 8+ right now
We should not be trying to feed the post. Inefficient. We don't score 1+ppp on feeing it to Dave. Losing proposition...
I thought tip was at 8p CST?
Line is KU by 7.5. But, we are 8-10 ATS; TTU is 12-7 ATS. We win, but do we cover???
Two late after the fact observations. Remy missed shots and defense was an issue as always, BUT - when he is in the game and dribbling without much seeming purpose or direction, he commands attention and the court opens up for the rest of the guys - our offense as a whole is better when we have 2 true guards. Regarding Dave, he played a big role with his rebounding. The key was that there were less than a handful of plays run for him, and none of his 4 buckets came on those. By not making him play with his back to the basket, where he is very inefficient, it frees him up to face the basket and go after rebounds - and doesn't clog the paint.
Still not quite sure I believe what I saw actually happened.....
Which the announcers are acknowledging...
@BShark Isn't that reviewable????
We are incapable of stopping penetration...

I'd sure love to know what the rebound advantage KU has
Only 39 - 18... ;)

Get 3 good looks - have to make one of those...
That was the game, I feel.
Would have been huge, but still a lot of time. I've never seen our guys pound the boards this hard. Just to keep up the intensity...
Get 3 good looks - have to make one of those...

The Hands of Dave. lol. He cant believe it himself.
Why can't he believe it - happens multiple times every friggin' game...
Why didn't CB help on the weak-side there???
@Texas-Hawk-10 And, no air under Dave's "jump"...
Second chance points are the only thing keeping us within shouting distance...
More like it - defense a bit more focused and they are starting to miss shots. They're only on a 20pt pace so far this half...
Well, we're on an average scoring pace for conference games...
They have 10 assists to 2 TOs. 8 and 8 for us...
Just wow....
@DanR Point taken....
@BeddieKU23 He should just go open and slam that...
@Kcmatt7 said in Octagon of Room Game Thread:
Under 3 by half - calling it now
Not if we keep running plays for Dave...
Ochai settled for a jumper there - should have taken it to the rim...
Why are our guys afraid to pull the trigger on open 3s???
@Texas-Hawk-10 said in Octagon of Room Game Thread:
KSU on pace for about 110 so far today.
Make that 116....
@BShark They won't sustain that, but they are getting very good looks.
KSU, which typically struggles to score, is on about a 90-100 pt pace right now...
Alas, Mitch is routinely out of position on defense and then is forced to foul....
I do like Dave's energy going for RBs. Just hold on to them....
Just stop feeding Dave. He just isn't an efficient scorer that way. Run plays for others and let him focus on ORBs, like he did on the Ochai miss....
@BeddieKU23 I agree that there were some really bad calls - actually, both ways (we were lucky with the missed TO by Harris) - BUT... The fact is that we do less to generate the kind of contact that gets calls than our opponents. For the season, we rank 160th nationally in FTA, and that is coming down by the game. We are last in the B12 in FTA in conference play - just 12.6 attempts per game. Our conference opponents are averaging 6 more FTA per game. We have had more FTA in just 1 of 5 conference games. With the players we have and style of play, we should be able to get to the line repeatedly and get other teams in foul trouble. Alas, our guys seem to consistently fade away around the rim when driving, rather than initiating or inviting contact.
Why do we always seem to struggle to get the ball in???
@Kcmatt7 Even if we get it in, we have to make 2 and they still have time...
Foul with too much time....
@Kcmatt7 said in BOOMER Game Thread:
Bill learn to foul here please. This is where you foul
Just not as they are shooting, please...
Ya gotta like Moser. Smiling with Harkless...
Who was Jalen guarding on that last play????
First FTs other than Mitch...
WTF are we doing - no purpose and no intensity...
@DanR said in BOOMER Game Thread:
I'm sorry, something is up with the refs
Maybe, but I think this is more of an issue with us. WVU shot 19 more FTs than we did at AFH. @BShark is right.
Sciambi is right. A lot of complaints about the refs, but there is a season long pattern. We don't get to the line nearly as much as we should...
@BShark And, yet his 1-5 edges out Ochai's 0-7.... ;)
7 KU players have scored - Ochai not one of them...
2 points in 8:30....
1st foul against OU this half...
