Also maybe a coincidence but Braun and Ochai just know how to hoop. Have heard similar about Harris. Good coaching at Mokan perhaps.

Braun had a great HS coach too. Just nails all year.

@bskeet Right, "Trump attacks media, rants about claimed bias" OR "Trump champions impartial, fact based reporting"

We get 95% the former in the mainstream media, and 5% the latter.

This fake news is no different. Except that we all recognize this as "fake."

Trump thinks any article that doesn’t give him a beej under his desk is fake news. Or should I say John Barron? David Dennison? I forget which fake name he uses these days to plant garbage stories.

@FarmerJayhawk Honestly the US "far left" is centrist for most of the world.

Agree with your overall sentiment. GOP is trying hard to appeal to awful people and it worked last time. NOT SAYING EVERYONE THAT VOTED FOR TRUMP IS AWFUL, MANY WERE TRICKED. But clearly they were playing up racism and such to get votes.

Thank goodness. Would hate to have Jeremy Corbyn/Cristina Kirchner types running the Democratic Party!

This is a longer discussion and I'm going to leave out a lot, but both parties are cracking up following what was really a liberal consensus post-Watergate, especially during the Reagan-W. Bush years. Every POTUS from Ford to Obama agreed on a few broad principles: markets are the best way to sort society, free trade is good, top tax rates should be in the 30's-ish, we need a safety net that works, doesn't just hand out cash, and pluralism is good.

The crackup really started in 92 with Pat Buchanan who REALLY didn't like the Reagan/Bush program. He's not a free market guy and is a borderline anti-Semite. He won the NH primary and scared the RNC into giving a crackpot a primetime speaking gig at the convention. We saw this trend continue with Perot challenging Bush and Clinton in the general on largely the same anti-trade, anti-globalization platform (remember the giant sucking sound?) As it turns out, both Buchanan and Perot were dead wrong about NAFTA. But they sowed the seeds of populism in the electorate which lit up a few giant trash fires post-08 crash. First was the Tea Party, who I admittedly was wrong about at the time. Turns out it was just a lot of boomers who didn't like Obama and really didn't care about policy. If they did they'd take Trump to the mat now for blowing a big hole in the deficit. Oh well.

Next trash fire was on the left, the Occupy crowd, basically the lefty tea party but more prone to drop deuces in public. I think their grievance was legitimate, that the government had the back of Wall St. more than the little guy during the crash. Both had similar populist stances: either DC or Wall St. is rigged against you, the poor sap. Trump sees these trash fires and decides to come down the escalator in 2015 and toss some nitroglycerine on it by telling the whole country BOTH are rigged against you, the poor saps, and "ONLY I CAN FIX IT." (direct quote from RNC 2016).

At the same time, there was something else going on in the academy, which is upstream from politics and culture. The "woke" revolution was happening. I remember being a student at KU finishing up my master's in 2014 when the Invisible Hawk kerfuffle happened. I'll never get over the visual of students calling Chancellor Gray-Little a racist (or at very least a racist enabler), considering she grew up in the Jim Crow South and dealt with the types of racism that make your skin crawl. The Mizzou "hunger strike" was also at that time. The campus of Evergreen State University about melted down over "wokeness" around then as well. This starts infecting the politics of the Democratic Party around the 2016 election and resulted in Bernie Sanders, a bit player in Congress with extremely questionable dental hygiene, damn near pulling off a massive upset.

At that point, the consensus us normies had been fighting around for a loooong time was dead. The right had succumbed to Trump fever and the left was self-immolating at the altar of wokeness. So now most of us are like Will Smith in the last episode of the Fresh Prince. Hello? Anyone out there? alt text

The right is entering dangerous territory with the increasing bent toward blood and soil nationalism and populism. They’ve vastly overcorrected for the left’s embrace of identity politics by embracing it themselves. They should’ve remained the liberal, free market party instead of embracing this MAGA/trade war/restrictionism/white identity politics claptrap. Leaves us normal liberals kind of homeless.

BShark said:

Why is it when this country was better off the tax rate on the ultra wealthy was much higher? Really makes you think...

Ehhh. There were 3 recessions in the 50’s when the top rate was like 91%. Stagflation of the 70’s happened when the top rated was about 70%. TRA of 86 made things better and cut the top rate in half, then in 1/3. That coupled with the big capital gains tax helped along the .com boom. Things obviously cratered in 08, but tax rates didn’t have anything to do with it.

Tl; dr version. The top marginal rate and economic growth, wages, or pick your metric aren’t correlated in any meaningful way. Cutting corporate and capital gains taxes does actually help growth.

I didn’t consider medicals. Just didn’t have enough to go on. Prox would need one since he’s already used his standard RS year.

State of the Roster • Oct 30, 2019 09:19 PM

Had some time today so I made a sheet of the roster using both the participation report and official roster from KU. Full sheet here ↗. Disclaimer: the scholarship vs. walk-on thing is an informed guess on my part. Let me know if I've made mistakes.

Found some interesting things. As of right now, we have 76 on scholarship (I think). 10 true freshman, 6 RS freshman, 5(!) sophomores, 8 RS sophomores, 10 juniors, 15(!) RS juniors, 14(!) seniors, and 8 RS seniors.

Of the 76 on scholarship, only 8 can still redshirt taking into account games already played in 2019: Valerian Agbaw, Torry Locklin, Steven Parker, Dom Williams, Marcus Harris, Earl Bostick, Atoine Frazier, and DaJon Terry.

Assuming we sign the full 25, plus add greyshirts, Jordan Medley, Jereme Robinson, and APH, we'll be at 82. That's the absolute ceiling and assumes 0 attrition (not going to happen. Like at all).

Man I wish I could go!! I honestly think this could be the biggest crowd in a decade. I’d be shocked if less than 45,000 folks showed up.

Same! I'm going to have bad FOMO Saturday afternoon. I'm really hoping at least 3/4 of those folks are KU fans. I HATE seeing a bunch of purple at our place.

@benshawks08 the biggest piece of that was tariffs on manufacturing inputs but your point makes sense. Generally fiddling around the edges doesn't change people's behavior in meaningful ways.

The NCAA wants to fiddle around the edges with this. I can see them wanting to keep a ban on boosters paying players and all that. If they could limit this to blanket licensing agreements like the O'Bannon settlement in the EA Sports case, they'd be over the moon. Could also see athletes getting increased stipends from a cut of merch sales, but without names on jerseys and that kind of thing. Personally I think that's a step in the right direction but won't really change the landscape of college sports since boosters and shoe co's will still be dealing under the table long before any of these kids step on a campus. To get that out, you have to bring those deals out of the shadows and just let them sign endorsement deals at any age and end the charade of amateurism. The Olympics did that years ago and they're doing better than they ever have. Shoot, we're about the only country that doesn't just flat make them government employees where their only (handsomely paid) job is to go win medals. The last Heisman trophy winner was a professional athlete and already got paid millions for forks sake. This really isn't that crazy an idea.

Brent Dearmon appreciation thread • Oct 30, 2019 05:07 PM

We have to keep them behind the chains. One of my major concerns is they torched OU by getting backs to the edge. We haven't been particularly good about sprinting to the football and making the tackle on the perimeter. If we can contain their running game (I think two of their backs are banged up) and make Thompson throw it from the pocket we've got a good shot.

On offense, have to be able to run and throw. I wouldn't mind taking a few shots early if we get a favorable matchup. We really need to avoid the slow starts we've had pretty consistently to keep the crowd in it and avoid KSU shortening the game. We need to hit some explosive plays to loosen up the box for Pooka. He's not going to be great running into a wall every down. Their DL is the strength of their defense so we won't have much of a chance if we keep running into a stacked box.

Will do. Remember welfare economics and see me five years after this takes effect.

I wish I knew where you were going with that. Free market? Gov't intervention? Redistribution?

I'll just say that how many times does government intervene, thinking it's helping, but in the end, it damages the situation? This isn't food safety.

Oh, I thought we were just throwing out vague statements with variations of I told you so at the end.

This will be the NCAA making its own policy about NIL. I thought you were ok with private organizations doing whatever they wanted? A more apt comparison is anti-competitive behavior from the NBA and NCAA.

@FarmerJayhawk Been saying that for years and people just aren’t smart enough of either side to see it.

Yuuuup. My parents are die-hard Trump supporters and several of my best friends are democratic socialists. Doesn't matter to me.

@BShark oh definitely. It's a sign that the NCAA is really feeling the heat and is responding to public pressure. Honestly if we can just get the NCAA football and basketball video games back I'll be thrilled. It's still a tremendous day when the updated football and basketball rosters come out for NCAA 14 and NCAA 2k8.

Yep, I think they only take one of Walton, Thompson, and Williams.

KU vs. dook • Oct 29, 2019 05:16 PM

Bumping this to say dook only beat noted juggernaut Northwest Missouri State 69-63 and shot a sterling 2-16 from 3. Only guys that hit were Stanley and walk-on Justin Robinson. Jones and Hurt both 0-3, Moore 0-4, Carey 0-1 and didn't play much due to foul issues. Exhibition disclaimers apply but we could rek them next week.

There are great and terrible people of every political persuasion. Don’t think they’re correlated at all. Crawford Co. went Trump in 16, Kelly/Watkins in 18. As purple as it gets!

I’m looking forward to seeing how we look with our trigger man out there. Sounds like Moss will be out again though. Have to wonder if we’ll be more turned up on defense. Looking at you, Silvio.

Would be very odd if there wasn’t...

Plus, this is all boilerplate language approved by the NCAA and (see, we’re being a stickler for all the stupid ruses!) gets mailed to WEF members I think close to annually. If Chad did any real reporting he’d be aware of this. But that wouldn’t make KU look bad so ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Lawhorn ought to stick to the fried chicken joints on Iowa St. beat. More his speed.

I was field director for a campaign in KS-02 years ago and did the whole tour de SEK. Even went to Neewollah a time or two. It’s crazy how different it is compared to the rest of the state. Very industrial and working class. All the hospital closures and Amazon leaving really hit the region hard. Great people though! On of my very best friends from KU is from Oswego and graduated from PSU (KU MBA).
