@Woodrow Any team with size and muscle, real men in the post, are going to back us down and abuse us in the paint.
@justanotherfan Protecting the merch a la Wiggs? But with much less impact (OK, about zero impact!).
@HighEliteMajor Just like with Mickleson and other bigs in the past, it seems like if Dave got more consistent minutes in logical sub flow stretches, he would perform with more confidence and consistency. The in 2 min, out for 30 in for 1 makes it really hard to do much of anything.
That is the worst a ku team has looked since the tcu ymca game. We played better the night after TRobs mom died and everyone was shell shocked and hung over with grief.
Losing Dok is proving more critical than we thought. We are a bad team right now. 3 shot clock violations? Come on. I bet Frank and devonte didn't combine for 3 in 3 years. Imagine if Ochai was not playing how ugly this would be. You cannot lose games like this and WV and win conference.
Whoops. Meant garrett
@Crimsonorblue22 Well I was right but not what I expected. Maybe Ochai instead of Grimes. He just cant shoot. Grimes and Och played pretty well together actually.
@kjayhawks Seemed like half our fouls were touch fouls but they had to draw blood to get called.
@mayjay Whoops! Sorry about that. Thats what you get when posting without the reading glasses on !
Post script...since Q played a bit better I bet he starts. But I still stand by my Best 5 premise.
11, 30, 24, 0, and 1
@justanotherfan The problem was devon got in foul trouble and he had to play the point. Thus ball in his hands up top. No way he was running Charlie out there to get slaughtered. But if 11 is in the game them you are 100%. Get him coming off curls downhill to the rim.
@HighEliteMajor Well, i had to use the current number and did not want to belabor itπ.
Saturday was the 100th loss for Coach at KU, and it took 16 seasons to get to 100. Remarkable. Tack on a few more we are likely to get this year, and by season's end that will equate to just 6.5 losses per year. That my friends, is what they call - Stupid Good.
Despite the feel that this year is going to be a bit of a down year after our recent runs with Frank and Davonte leading the way, the sustained excellence we have enjoyed over the last 16 years is nothing short of amazing. I really hope Kurtis reminds Bill every day, "You know, you only need 127 more wins to tie Phog."
@dylans
At this point I believe that is the key to #15 and any hopes of a tourney run beyond the Sweet 16. Was disappointed all the whispers last week amounted to nada.
@HighEliteMajor @Crimsonorblue22 For the first time this year, Garrett tried to drive on guys that were bigger, stronger, quicker, and better athletes than any other player he'd tried to drive it on this year. And in fact, they were HEA's - High Elite Athletes - better athletes than he is. The outcome was blocks, rushed shots, forced shots because he did not quite have the angle he's been getting on the MEA's - Mid Elite. You could see on every play they were just slightly ahead of MG. His effort and ideas were good, he was just not quick enough or jumping high enough to outplay the HEA. I just hope he will keep doing what he was doing in B12 play and not have confidence interuptus, because his inability to hit the outside shot was glaring. Other teams will play the sag on him, so he will have to hit a couple line drives (I think you know what I mean by that) to open the driving lanes back up.
Better Athletes. Fact of the matter is KY had far superior athletes at almost every position and it showed (can you imagine if Bill had trotted Charlie out there to try to guard one of those thoroughbreds? That would have been ugly). Yes, the engineered whistle helped them, and I love how hard Dedric tries and how much he cares (hello Vick, DLaw has only been at KU a year and a half!), but we just don't have the horses this year.
@Bwag Vick needs to score 15-20 and DLaw the same for us to have a chance to win games. We had not Frank or Davonte to step up and take over the game like in years past. You are so right we need a lot more from Vick, and he just does not seem to have that aspect to his game.
@Crimsonorblue22 And that 1 board came in the first min of the game (fell right to him so he did nothing), which makes it even worse. Ochai and Vick were in there trying, even if their production was weak. Never once can I recall grimes in there mixing it up. He avoids contact more than a prude at Bob Jones U.
22 fouls on ku. 13 on ky. Engineering.
Man we need Silvio
@Kcmatt7 Nice!
@Kcmatt7 Hickory, mesquite, apple?
@approxinfinity I wish you could have seen him in person. He seemed far bigger than that.
@wrwlumpy Hey thanks a lot, I just blew my breakfast when I saw the kiss pic. That may be a memory burn image I can never get out of my mind. Gag me with a pitch fork!!!
Now to a better memory. In junior high, I went to the first every basketball camp at William Jewell back when the Chiefs were still holding training camp there. It was the summer of 1980, I believe, when temps hit over 100, 17 days in a row; we were melting. And they gave all the air conditioned dorms to the NFL players and not the campers for some reason. Anywho....my buddy and I went into the indoor pool to try to cool off and there was this massive mountain of a man sitting in the corner watching his little kids play. It was Art Still. My gosh he was humongous. His little brother was a forward for Jewell who was helping run the camp. Art must have been tired from training camp because he just sat there, but boy was he intimidating!
@dylans LOL. We may need a more emphatic nickname for that style of D. Louganis D? Nice dive, Perry!
@HighEliteMajor There is absolutely no reason to give any minutes to Moore. He is small, not good on offense, terrible on defense, and he mishandles the ball a lot. So I agree we can give Q time. But taking him out of the starting line up may actually be just what Dr. HEM is ordering. It might not ruin is confidence as so many on the board are saying. What if it takes the pressure off?
I don't recall, but when Newman was in his early season, did not HCBS take him out of the starting line up a few times? Also, he had 2 years of D1 under his belt, with 1 year in the program. Huge difference for Malik.
@Gorilla72 Grimes has patented the matador D.
@HighEliteMajor Good post. Plus we might want to consider replacing the coach who worked so hard for so many hours with Dok and MG to improve their shots.
@truehawk93 Clearly you have spent too much time coaching hoops!
@HighEliteMajor One thing that has always troubled me over my years of coaching and watching my kid's teams when I was not coaching, is how many coaches seem to patently refuse to play their best players all at the same time. Never once as a coach did I not start my best 5 unless there was an eligibility issue. So maybe we flip this debate which is losing "energy" and answer a simpler/better? question: Who are our best 5 players right now?
1. Dedric
2. Vick
3. Dotson
4. Garrett
5. Agbaji
That's who you start. And btw....this "deep" pre-season team everyone was raving about has gotten real thin real quick.
@BigBad Ah ha...sarcasm alert!!!
@Crimsonorblue22 While his 2 drives were classic freshman - brain in another universe, sped up faster than the spaceship that took him there - a couple of the fouls were kinda flukey IMHO. His D and aggression in all the other games has been spot on. For only playing in what, 4 games? He has been fantastic and continue to produce far and away more than Q. It's not even close.
@Big-Clyde52 How could it fall any further (his confidence)? He is at rock bottom. His negative energy, poor body language, and his timid play have no business on the court starting or finishing a game. Start the game with #30 power energy and maybe we don't fall behind like we have been doing of late. Let Q try to gain his confidence back through short bursts of play that wind up positive. If it is another short negative burst, then it lessens the damage and Bill and pull him back out. KJ can bring some energy, and while his D is not much better than Q, he has actually created positive plays (rebounds on both ends, put backs, and a couple decent buckets). Far, FAR, more than Q had brought to the table.
@BigBad Apples and oranges.
I think we have seen enough now that Ochai needs to be in the starting line up. He is better than Grimes in every phase of the game. Yes, he had a couple freshman drives and To's, but his energy, scoring, rebounding, leaping ability, athleticism, ability to finish, and most importantly, his "want to" on defense greatly surpass Q. I am sure there are political reasons that make this difficult for HCBS, but the reality is #30 needs to be in the starting line up next game and moving forward. Ochai is simply a better all around basketball player and gives us a much better chance to win.
@BShark 1 steal...thats it
You pretty much have to start Ochai now.
Grimes checks in and we go right in the crapper
Beware of the Phog!!!
We are a lot better with grimes. On the pine
@Texas-Hawk-10 Vick cannot brain today. He has the dumb.
We did increase intensity. Vick is such a moron.
BAYLOR up 12 on WV
DEFENSE!!!
@betterfireE Nothing
What if Ochai is the alpha dog?
Charlie should never play. #30 should play more.
@BeddieKU23. Defense for sure. He is atrocious.
@Crimsonorblue22 Bummer I had to run an errarnd and did not check back. Thanks for offer.
Cost?
@jayballer73 In a word....NO! No chance, no way, no how. If for some idiotic reason his family encourages him to enter the draft with agent, he will go undrafted and we will never hear his name again as he languishes away his career in Turkey, or Greece, or Sladonia. Selby had a better shot and was more athletic and everyone knows how that movie ended.
