@Kcmatt7 I am not an X and O guy like a lot of posters. But even I thought at halftime...if we can't keep them out of the lane....lay off of them a little and force them to beat us outside....they are not good 3 pt shooters...with the exception of Carter, I think.
@benshawks08 Agree.
@JRyman Big game, but a lot can happen between now and then. I have always believed that losing at the contenders doesn't kill you...losing at home (gasp) or losing to non-contenders (for argument sake I'll say anyone but OU, ISU, WVU) will potentially hurt you because at least some of the other contenders will win there. I'm thinking 4 losses will at least get you a tie this year........but who knows.
@HighEliteMajor Do we have any ball handling bigs? It didn't look like it. Kidding mainly.
One good thing...ISU lost. With 3 losses including one home loss and one to Tx.....they might be "glued, screwed, and tattooed" when it comes to the conference race.
Yes....you would think we could handle the press better........and make them pay. They were much quicker to the ball. I couldn't believe how often we got beat off of the dribble. I wish in the 2nd half, we would have packed it in a little and make them shoot 3 pointers. Way too many fouls.....although 10 or so were a result of us putting them on the line...even eliminating these, they still outscored us by 10 or so at the line.....again, they appeared much quicker.
Bad games happen......we have theme every year. This loss in and of itself doesn't kill us.....was one of the tougher conference games on the schedule....but you hate the way it happened. It's not like they shot the ball well to beat us.
We lost the game by turning the ball over, letting them get dribble penetration, and by fouling too much. Even subtracting the 10 or so they scored at the line when we put them there on purpose, they still outscored us by 10 or so at the line. Heck, back off of them and let them beat us from the outside. Only Carter, I think, has proven the ability to hit the 3. Obviously, it is hard to win with 20 or more turnovers.
@benshawks08 Good points. Especially about the short bench complaint in the past. I hope you are right about our ability to win a NC with the C5 (if it stays as is)....but keep in mind that win over OU was an AFH win....
@KUSTEVE That is a good summary and I feel the same way. I think most of us would have liked for Self to get Bragg / Diallo more PT. HEM has made some very good points. I do worry that we need the abilities of Bragg and Diallo to win a NC, but Self's track record speaks for itself (although you can't help but be worried about our track record of losing early in the tournament...and that is the basis for a lot of the 2nd guessing that goes on here)
@HighEliteMajor Wow. Back with a vengeance. I think Self is hoping that, at least, Bragg and Diallo, prove that they are the guys....he has said so....but, as you point out, playing Diallo 3 min. (or whatever) is a strange way to go about it.
I don't get the starting Mick thing, and then not seeing the court again. I think he's trying to give them all a shot at this point....although in a lot of cases in small doses. At this point it looks like Bragg has a higher probability of getting there than Diallo .....but time will tell.
While I understand your point about Traylor and Lucas not being the guys who are going to help us win a NC playing a lot of minutes, I think you undervalue some of the things they have done. (Traylor driving to the hoop and getting points when nobody else is doing anything, the 2 blocks....2 examples).
I also think that other things come in to play that we don't see. Out of position, not executing the play that was called, etc. when it comes to Bragg and Diallo. Also....as has been mentioned....we don't see what goes on in practice.
Just my thoughts as we all try to figure out the method to Self's madness........
@Crimsonorblue22 Oh man.....I cringe at the thought of BG facing the WVU defense. But maybe the other guys can break the press giving him some wide open 3s?
@ralster Ditto on Jennifer Garner.
@drgnslayr Yes. That has been our formula. Win the road games where others slip up.
I would not be at all surprised if one of the contenders loses a game in Lubbock.
@jayballer54 Yes. The bottom line is...we won on the road when our shots weren't falling. I'll take that anytime.
@tundrahok Yes, and as I posted on the other thread....our depth showed. Svi and Greene coming in and hitting 2 for 3 from 3 when Wayne and Devonte had off games. Our big guys getting in foul trouble wasn't even an issue.....we have guys to bring in.
@KUSTEVE Exactly. Style points don't count. All that counts is the road win.
Our depth showed. Svi and Greene came in and hit 2 for 3 from 3 when Wayne and Devonte did not have good games. Although Wayne had a good 2nd half, we won, on the road with 2 of our better players not having good games. We played all those guys up front...and really needed to do that due to foul issues.
Great win, considering.
Very sloppy play. ...and is there ever a lid on the basket. Selden had a really tough half.
@wissoxfan83 Yes. Huge for us. Normally, when contenders play, I want the home team to win.....so the road victor isn't one up on us. However, given that Baylor is like a box of chocolates....you never know what you are going to get...I don't view them as a contender for the conference title. So....very good for us that ISU lost at home. (And I hope that Baylor doesn't prove me wrong).
@Crimsonorblue22 I was waiting for that! You are, of course, correct.
I think we will win but it will be close. This is a game where I think there is a greater chance of us losing than most people think. Odiase had a good game against us last year. Their guards are good...if they are really hot we could be in trouble. But we should still come out on top.
@drgnslayr No...that's the list of people that EAT at McDonald's..............:)
@JRyman Then I guess I don't see why the refs even bother to tell the defender to back up, if it is not enforceable.
@Kong I can tell that you are new to this site.....:)
@JRyman So....if there was not much room......and the ref had to ask Frank to step back a few feet..........doesn't that become a defacto "rule"? Meaning....isn't there validity to the point that Frank shouldn't have stepped back close to the inbound line? And thus maybe violated a "rule"?
@drgnslayr If there is no rule, then why do the refs make the defender step back?
@JayHawkFanToo Me too. Which is why it frustrates me that you can have 5 great months.....and 1 bad game in the tournament....and your season is a failure in many people's eyes.
@DoubleDD I could care less what Hield does in the NBA as I am not a fan of the league. I do know that he is plenty dangerous playing for OU.....against us.
@wrwlumpy That's awesome to have been able to hear instructions from a coaching legend.
@wrwlumpy Well said. I think part of what is driving the freshmen playing time discussion is our recent performance in the tournament. Many believe that having them playing major minutes improves our chances of winning a NC. The recent disappointments have made this more of a flashpoint.
@RockChalkinTexas Those are awesome. I remember listening to Bud's 50 pt. game on the radio.
@jayballer54 Right. And Perry is certainly capable of scoring the 20 or so that equates to. I think we are saying the same thing.
@Crimsonorblue22 Probably. But those purple clad bobbing back and forth fans (that drives me crazy) will be out in force and loud....the chance to knock us off is the highlight of their year.
@tis4tim Keep in mind that Hield's 46 points equates to about 33 in a regulation game. I would say he is capable of doing that again.....but to your point.....he did hit some very difficult shots.
@BeddieKU23 Yes...I think KSU will be tougher to beat (in theory) than OSU this year. I think they will be tough at home this year.
@jayballer54 I have seen Texas play. Probably thinking about the UNC win. Yes....it was way too much Taylor 1 on 1. But, they still have talent.......yes..KSU almost beat them in Austin. (Although KSU is much better than most expected...despite the 2 road loses). Tech played Utah tough, other than that, they haven't played much of anyone.
@tis4tim I think 43-45 is more realistic also.
@wrwlumpy Tech worries me. They have played us tough there and are improved. They looked good against Texas (at least the parts of the game that I saw). You always worry about an emotional let down...although Self's history of handling that part of the equation has been good. We should, in theory, be more equipped to handle WVU's press with our 2 good guards. It is still a tough place to play and we always get everyone's best shot (at least energy and crowd noise wise) on the road.
On a related note, I couldn't help but notice TCU's spiffy new floor when they played this weekend. There was hardly anyone there, though. Freakin place will be full when we visit, no doubt.
I watched the video of Mason deflecting Hield's in bound pass. This may be a common occurrence but Frank's hand was right on the ball as Hield extended his arms. You can see how it would be easy to deflect the pass. I would not be surprised if this tactic gets some scrutiny now. I would imagine that the ref could give them a chance to re-do the inbound pass in these circumstances. If we like using this tactic (stepping next to the line after the opponent takes the ball from the ref), Frank probably shouldn't have called attention to what he did.
@Crimsonorblue22 The problem is, Diallo could end the season with a few good games that shows his ability...and as mentioned above, the NBA will draft him in the first round on potential.
Just because he would benefit from staying does not mean that he will.
I watched the video of Frank deflecting and stealing the in bounds pass. It may go on all the time, but his hand was right on the ball. No wonder he was able to steal it. I would not be surprised that this practice gets some extra attention now. I'm not sure about the rules, but it wouldn't surprise me if the ref could allow another inbounds play if you do what Frank did. Also, if we want to continue to use that technique....Frank probably shouldn't have acknowledged that he moved up to the line after the ref handed the ball over.
@justanotherfan Good point on the refs missing Jamari reaching through the basket.
@justanotherfan Like you, I wanted to be there so I could shake Hield's hand. An unbelievable performance. I also felt the same way about Woodard. I was impressed with the whole OU team....they are really good.
One thing I reminded myself of though,,,, that game was nearly a game and 1/2...so we should keep that in mind when looking at the stats....(46pts, double doubles, etc). But I am in no way taking anything away from anyone on either tem. That also applies to turnovers......in a game played that hard fought...........even more impressive.
@RockkChalkk Agree on Frank's defense. Although HIeld got his point, ultimately, Frank slowed him down during several stretches.
@mihawk Yes. I did not like the plays we ran or the shots we took when we had a chance to win at the end of multiple periods. Although, you can't complain about the shot that Selden took....it just didn't go in.
@Crimsonorblue22 Yes...that would be the reason he would not play...but heck maybe his fresher legs would have helped...that's why I'm not a coach.
@Crimsonorblue22 After looking at the stats,...looks like he had 4 TOs the first half and 0 afterward.....you are right....big improvement the rest of the way.
@Mikey-P Devonte had a tough first half....played better in the OTs.
@VailHawk I thought the same thing and posted as such on another thread. I was wondering if a fresh set of legs would have been able to stand out with a court full of exhausted guys on both sides.
First of all, a great win....that's all that really counts.
My thoughts:
You don't want to read too much into one game, but it appeared that, on a neutral court, OU might be the better team with the difference being Hield....he was fantastic.
I was really impressed with OU's defense. But, man, I got sick of them forcing a turnover and then turning it into 2 points (would have been more if not for some great defensive plays..Traylor in particular).
I don't usually complain about refs....it usually evens out. But.....if you are going to call the questionable foul on the body on Mason at the end of regulation, then you have to call him getting a forearm across the forehead on his attempted layup on the next trip down. Lucas gave them no choice but to call the foul on the rebound.
Self always goes with who is playing well, so I understand why he left the same 5 guys in. But, I couldn't help but think...wouldn't a set of fresh legs allow us to take advantage of our depth? Couldn't BG have helped? But..we won...again, that's all that counts.
The OTs were a war of attrition....both teams were completely spent.....that's why HIeld lost the ball and then turned it over on the in bound play...and why we won.
Would love to hear others thoughts on these points.
Oh yes...our efforts at the end of a couple of the periods..I forget which...one of Franks's layups and Perry's airball were really weak efforts....I thought we were doomed because of those alone....shows what I know.
Hate to say it, but 2 straight crappy attempts by LL.
