@KUSTEVE as the season goes along and he gets more game experience, he will settle in and his percentages will go up as a result.
@Lulufulu Bagley would get stomped by Joel. Wouldn't even be fair.
Sometimes they closed, numerous times they didn't. They were doubling Devonte out front which of course leaves no one on Vick. Several times Vick caught it and didn't even really face the hoop. When you have a wide open jumper at the foul line, you HAVE to make knocking it down a priority. He finally took advantage a few times in the second half and made Syracuse pay.
@FarmerJayhawk how quickly do they inform you of the results?
@Gorilla72 what is the exact test he took?
@Crimsonorblue22 exactly. Vick is a good shooter and can knock that down all day. Self thinks so as well
@kjayhawks eh not necessarily. Not when he's standing there with the ball wide open at the free throw line looking for someone open. He needs to shoot that.
@HighEliteMajor I agree. We can't expect him to be great every game offensively. But he will come up big in some games this year. We'll need him in the tournament too. I'm not going to give up on him.
This game was great practice for Baylors zone and Texas's length, same with the Kentucky game. With Arizona State and Texas A&M looking good, our non con is looking like good prep for March.
@wissox and he should have had thirty with how wide open he was in the middle. He'll learn for next time.
@Lulufulu I agree. With all the things that have worked against us (Dok's injury, Joel's injury, Diallo and Cliff with eligibility issues), you'd have to think eventually something will break our way. I'm confident that we at least get either Silvio or Billy. Our guards were pretty good today other than Malik. He'll figure out by March.
@Crimsonorblue22 coach said he was better the second half when he was looking at the basket. This game will be a good teaching tool for the team.
@jayballer54 more awareness than talent, imo
@Hawk8086 3 - yes Vick looked very passive in there. He should have shot the ball every time and had like 30 points. Why he didn't take advantage is a mystery. That hurt us a bit because that was the most open spot on the floor.
@StLJhawk man got to make open shots. Don't want to see Oregon like games this year. Man oh man. That and his turnovers and fouls. When he's bad, he's pretty bad, but when he's good, he's terrific. Got to play smart, not stupid.
@jaybate-1.0 I agree tomorrow will be a good gauge for where he is.
To me, Mitch has the feel of a guy who will really come up big down the stretch in some key games. He has a bit of a competitive attitude and he grew up loving KU basketball. That's the type of attitude and devotion you just can't buy. I like his game and I think he has the potential to go far this year. His shot blocking is really good given his size. Not to mention he's good at spraying in those outside jumpers.
@HighEliteMajor Oh sorry I misunderstood what you meant as the origins. My mistake
@JayHawkFanToo I watched the game and I remember what happened, but directly before that Indiana missed several free throws when the game was tight (within a couple points) and therefore killed the momentum they had. Turnovers and missed free throws are surefire ways to kill momentum and get the crowd out of the game and made it easier for Duke.
@HighEliteMajor I think Ochefu is actually closer to 6'9 and I don't remember Nova ever really playing Ochefu and Reynolds together against Carolina. It was mostly 4-1. Nova didn't have more size than we do. Their lineup was roughly 6'3, 6'3, 6'4, 6'6 and 6'9. We have 6'2, 6'3, 6'5, 6'8, and 7'0. All the talk was how Carolina would destroy Nova inside, yet it didn't even come close to being a reality because their guards played so well on the ball (see their game against OU and Buddy Hield). DeSousa seems to be the perfect type of player we need to fill that Reynolds role of a tough, hard nosed rebounder and defender. Any points we get are icing on the cake.
I disagreed about the origins of small ball in the college game.
@JayHawkFanToo free throws are huge momentum killers. Can't expect to win and pull an upset while missing opportunities to score when no one is guarding you. Simply can't be throwing up bricks like he was.
@BeddieKU23 agreed. Marcus will be that if no desousa.
@dylans right just like how Carolina's four legit bigs feasted on Nova in the title game. Oh wait....
@HighEliteMajor I disagree there. I think Villanova and Jay Wright are the ones who proliferated the concept over a decade ago in college basketball and first came to prominence in 2006 (elite eight). Teams have proved time and again, such as in 2011, 2014 and 2016, that titles can be won by teams with only one or two forwards. The key is for the guards to make life difficult for opposing bigs by pressuring the perimeter and making entries into the post arduous. Villanova was superb at this against us and Carolina. I mean, they beat a team with multiple NBA level bigs and only had one real forward in Ochefu. Good shooting and rebounding are the two other keys to win a title with a small team. Even if we only have Dok and Mitch, I will believe that getting to San Antonio is a real possibility, with Silvio being gravy.
@JayHawkFanToo he would have been behind Mitch? Hmm, not sure about that.
@jaybate-1.0 have you not been watching Dwight? He looks good.
@Crimsonorblue22 he would be the second big off the bench right now. Man we could have used him
@JayHawkFanToo they've faced tall teams before, like Baylorseveral times, Purdue and Kentucky among others.
@jaybate-1.0 yes, it is a theory of yours that there are issues between Malik and Svi. To every other human, you sir have formed what we in academia call a theory. I disagree with your idea, and that's that. Let's see how the season unfolds and if your theory holds any water.
@jaybate-1.0 no one is denying it happened. Most of us think that theory is off base and not true. I personally don't care the extent to which you propagate it, and I will listen to your theories in the future. It's why I'm on here - I enjoy reading what other people think, but I will also comment when I think you might be misinformed. I disagree with you about chemistry issues between Malik and Svi, so we will have to agree to disagree.
@JayHawkFanToo is Matt Scott a reliable source?
Just saw it on another site. Would be tremendous to get him back. Hes the guy we need to take us to another level and compete inside with Duke.
@Crimsonorblue22 you are wrong! Don't you know there are issues between them? (Sarcasm alert)
@BShark what is Matt Scott saying? I haven't seen anything
@FarmerJayhawk you hear anything?
@Texashawk Its just jaybate - there is no real evidence that Svi and Malik have chemistry issues. All conjecture.
@jaybate-1.0 Eh, that's a bit of a stretch on Svi and Malik. I wouldn't make any conclusions based on one play. Bring other examples along with that one and we'll talk.
@drgnslayr this was discussed on another site about the schedule. I think these games are good so guys can get more game experience in their new roles. Devonte is in a new role, Newman is in a new role and Dok is in a new role. Understanding each other and developing on court chemistry is very important. It seems as though the fanbase goes back and forth on this - when the schedule is lighter, we worry about being tested. Yet when it is hard, we worry about being beat up and worn down by the end of conference play. You can't have it both ways.
As we have seen over the years, difficulty of schedule has zero impact on tourney results. Just look at Gonzaga last year and Memphis in 08. Both played a couple good teams in the non con but fattened up on cupcakes in conference, yet that didn't stop them from getting to the title game. Even if you have a tough schedule and develop from those, that does not necessarily correlate to elite eight wins. It is hard to predict which teams will show up in March and which ones wont' (Villanova in 2016 and Xavier last season are great examples of this).
@jayballer54 eh, Kentucky is good but if that game is how we can expect to play against good competition, then we aren't getting to the final four, let alone a championship, this year. That game was no where close to how good this team is. Bad decisions all over the court, fatigue and tons of missed OPEN shots were the reasons why we looked so bad. I will not complain about missing guarded shots, but Svi and Devonte missed a bunch of open looks. Devonte was playing hero ball and looking to make a big shot or play every time down the floor instead of distributing and running the team and Malik was not good for most of the game due to bad decisions in transition and driving the ball. We are much better than that game. We'd better hope we are anyway.
@JayHawkFanToo the only way we lose is if we beat ourselves.
I haven't watched Syracuse yet, but this is not a top of the line talent team that Boeheim has this year. Yeah they have some height, but Bill Self teams typically shred zone defenses. I don't expect this to be a twenty point blowout of course, but we would have to play very poorly in order to lose. Arizona State will be the toughest of this slate along with Stanford, imo.
@jayballer54 I hear you, but we heard the same thing about Purdue. Spread the floor, disrupt passing lanes, rebound and run and gun and we'll be fine.
@DoubleDD self has already said he would be an immediate impact. His words not mine
I always do feel content after number two. I understand where the OP is coming from.
@Blown Cheick is a completely different player than Silvio. When I watch Silvio, what I see is someone who is under control and has good basketball iq. C heick on the other hand, well let's just say he's still figuring things out in the nba.
@DoubleDD bingo. We need depth, defense and rebounding. If Silvio can provide that, then we good fam.
@JayHawkFanToo the Cunliffe lowballing is a thing before he has even played a game for us.
@BShark gut feeling?
@cragarhawk we don't even have all our players yet!
Just a bunch of bad decisions by Florida at the end. Standing around dribbling and no ball movement when they got ahead big. Then missed free throws to put them ahead. Texas did the same thing. With our FULL compliment of players, when can compete with Puke in March. Double Bagley and Carter every time, dont let them shoot three foot shots. Cover Gracie and send five to the glass every time. Folks, they aren't Kentucky in 2015 good. Florida is better and only lost when they stalled.
@mayjay Florida lost, Duke did not win.
