Marcus, Oubre and Embiid started last night for Sixers. I wonder if that’s happened before — 3 (or more) Jayhawks starting for an NBA team.
@BeddieKU23 Really good observations all the way around. Two additions: 1. I was hoping Harris would have taken a step up (like McCullar), but I haven’t seen that so far; he’s still solid and I like him, but I find myself wanting/expecting more; and 2. El Marko looks like he belongs as a starter now, a far cry from even 5 games ago; I no longer cringe when he has the ball; his speed is apparent and I expect he’ll figure out how to use it as the season progresses.
@BShark great clip. Thanks for posting. Yes, Nick really did look lost (or maybe slow?) in the switching D. It was a noticeable contrast with the others.
@kjayhawks thanks for posting that. HCBS at his very best.
Grady showed up, hit shots, learned to play some D and actually played hard for KU, including a few layouts that I thought he might not get up from. He was 100% with us for the year it made sense for him to be with us. He left what it no longer made sense for him, when he knew he’d be a lottery pick. Do I wish he’d stayed another year? Sure. Could he have used another year before going pro? Yup, maybe two. Would we have better odds against UCONN tonight were he starting? You bet. But to take issue with his decision seems misplaced to me. It’s his life. He should do what he thinks is best for him, not us. KU is quite high on my list of life interests, but for this issue I am but a single fan hair on the fan tail of the Grady’s life dog.
I agree with the above two takes on Nick — he played pretty well (better than he has been) and given more time might have played even better. My concern is that he’s not going to be able to replicate that against top teams and they will target him on D. But we’ll see. I’d love for my worry to prove unfounded.
Scary thought: I just realized that with the death of the PAC 10, Bill needs a new gig, and calling Big 12 games would be a natural, given the new teams. This tourney is his big audition!
@BShark agree completely, he’s so far out there. But I’ve never heard him give us love like he did last night — the program, the ethos, Self, the players. It’s as though someone spoke to him after the last PAC 10 v KU game he called. He even learned some of our player’s names (or he’s been practicing using a cheatsheet).
CB had 25 pts, 9 rebounds and 3 assists last night! Great game, but in a losing effort against the Pelicans.
@wissox for me, many reasons, but most of all: while at Duke, he intentionally stomped on a fallen defender’s chest under the basket
Last night against the Bucks — 11 points but on 2-10 shooting
@BeddieKU23 that’s encouraging. Looks like a he’s be a great pick up for us.
Any news on our chances to sign him? I just read he’s on campus today.
Wow — maybe a team that needs that much fan support should find a less-demanding sport
And best not to talk about penises while on the air
I like that idea, @approxinfinity. Re the salary hit, he’s still making 3.2M according to ESPN.
That was great! It’s a shame (and I suppose a statement about Durant) that Durant didn’t try to contest it. I would have loved to see how that turned out.

Check out Braun’s steal and dunk on a disinterested Durant from last night’s game. Great play!
If he were my kid, I’d be doing a lot of soul searching, but I’d want him to play for a disciplined tough coach like Self. Or at least like the coach I perceived Self to be prior to this decision—I’m still feeling my way around whether I need to alter my sense of Self. Also, I believe in growth and redemption, but a lack of contrition is a road block to that.
Check out the clip on ESPN. Great block!
