Self's Comments on Diallo Situation • Nov 22, 2015 03:13 PM

So can anyone answer this question about the NCAA? They say they are in it to protect and look out for the student athlete.

In this case and I am sure others as well, what student athlete are they looking out for? Against what are they protecting them from?

From an education? For the chance to make something of themselves? Who protects the student athlete from the NCAA?

Ok so it was more than one question sorry

This exit is for those whose want instant gratification.

Next stop after this one. Unknown.

@HighEliteMajor going all the way back to the start of your post about Self's quote about playing Lucas.

I almost forgot about posting this digesting the other points of your post.

Why is it that Self feels the need to coach to the game style the other coach is known to excel at? Is it for bragging rights at coaching clinics that he beat them at their own game?

Why doesn't he enforce his game plan on the other team?

In my opinion is that his team this year and the two previous teams didn't have an identity to enforce.

Is it the high/low game? If it is the. Run it to a fault. Get the bugs in the game that can score down low and open the lane up for Perry.

Is it the dribble weave either with three guards or 4 with Perry out there too? I'd so then run it and run it until you get the penetration from up top to get the easy basket in the paint.

@DoubleDD John Wooden lost 4 games in his second to last year coaching at UCLA and 3 his final year. 7 losses in two years.

He had only lost 5 total loses the 7 years leading up to that.

Good thing he retired when he did. The game was just passing him by. I mean he didn't even have an all American on that last squad. Jamal Wilkes was his last one the year before. Man his recruiting had bottomed out too.

Look as much as the game changes so do other programs. They see what the top dogs are doing and try to copy that. Schools hire better coaches, paying for them. In return they recruit better players. They change the environment to a winning one. So on and so on.

Schools gunned for UCLA, just like they are gunning at KU. Rick Barnes brought in talent to Texas but couldn't beat Self and KU so they let him go to see if they could get better.

Dunking and deep breaths • Nov 21, 2015 01:42 PM

Kansas missed how many layups against Mich St? How many of those could have been made dunks?

We know 9 were blocked.

Speaking of blocks KU had only 1. As much as Valentine got in the lame we only had one block? Sad in reality

A few mentioned how winded Frank looke. I get it, it does does take time to get into "game shape" One would think with the strenuous boot camp that he and the rest of the team could run in the New York Marathon.

All the guys at the end of the MSU game were shot, it wasn't because they were expanding all their energy to come back from 13 down. It wasn't because they were out hustling them. It wasn't due to s full court press and trapping D.

Why were they all so shot and winded?

Guys are lean and toned, quick lateral movement, fast from base line to baseline. Even heard a few posters say guys have faster foot speed.

All this and yet no one on this team can dunk! Are their legs that tired from workouts they can't jump any more? Is it the style of training itself that Huddy (gasp) has them doing that is affecting their verticals?

OR is it that in practice that Perry is never challenged at the rim and he just has to lay it in? It's not just Perry it's all the bugs in reality.

Does HCBS put spikes on the rim so players are afraid to dunk in fear of cutting their hands open?

Are they coached to finish at the rim? This goes back to the Standford game. No one finished strong. It was layups and floaters that got swatted away.

For a coach who likes to pound it inside he's won't let his bigs throw it down. Maybe they can't jump?

Why doesn't KU dunk?

Not only is it harder to block than a lay up but it fires up the bench, giving Manning and Self something to do, hold back their teammates. It gets the crowd going. It's a smack in the face of the D. Heck Releford used to put a little flare on his run outs. TRob and Whithey did it with authority. Reed got one, one and AFH went nuts!!

And yet Perry's nerf rim on te back of his childhood door is still at a 90 degree angle, it was never dunked on!

Lucas shoots an airball from a foot away. Dunk it already!!!

Traylor drives from the line and gets to the rim just to watch it roll off the other side. Dunk it already.

Man non of them have a killer instinct or wouldn't hurt a fly. But cmon fellas dunk the ball. At least once per half. Who knows you might like it. Other teams are doing it.

Shooting percentage will go up. The crowd will get louder.

Why doesn't KU dunk the ball?

@joeloveshawks I'm 99.7% sure we did NOT have a dunk in the MSU game.

I may have misremembered but I'm pretty sure we didn't.

I don't get it, these guys are lean, quick laterally, fast down the floor, times. Yet no one has a vertical jump good enough to dunk?

So this guy walks into a small town bar and belly ups. He orders a beer and sees this large jar behind the bar filled with 20 dollar bills.
He ask te bartender, "what's with that jar full of twenties?"
"That's for a contest we have here. There's three steps to complete. You complete the three you win what's in the jar." He replies
"Cool what are the three things?" The stranger ask
"You only find out after you pay. And they have to be done I. The order you are told and all three have to be completed." The Bartender tells him.
So the stranger reached into his pocket and pulls out a 20 and sets it on the bar.
Te bartender looks at him and says while grabbing the 20 from the bar, "ok first of all you have to drink a 5th of this tequila." As he sets a ne bottle on the bar, "when you've finished that you have to go pull a tooth that is infected from the old pittbull that is chained up out back. After that you have to go across the street and make this 80 year old lady have her first orgasm in 55 years. Ready. Set. Go!"

The stranger picks up the bottle and starts to chug the bad tequila. He chugs and chugs without throwing up. Stands up and falls over. Picks himself up and heads out back.
All of a sudden there is some loud crashes in the alley and a few yelps from the dog.

Then it becomes real quiet. Just as everyone is wondering what happened the back door opens up and the stranger walks through the door, his clothes are ripped and there's blood on his face.

He looks around the bar and ask, "Now where's that 80 year old woman that needs her tooth pulled?"

I see the the gates opening along the prison wall freeing Diallo.

I believe they answer it with their heads down, "We run the high low, sometimes it produces high numbers, sometimes low scoring. But you play D you will be on the court." As they take a deep breath and look up, "Can you rebound? I mean really really rebound in limited minutes on the court?"

Recruiting updates • Nov 20, 2015 02:11 PM

@SoftballDad2011

Sure some of them didn't pan out the way we wanted/expected but they were
Still great signings on the day they happened.

It would be great wouldn't it if we knew which were going to be busy or those who would over achieve and surprise us all?

I believe the recruiting process is a practice, as in you have to keep trying new things to see what will work and what won't. Practice on getting guys. Practice because it's not a proven science.

Injuries, mind sets, the NCAA, coaching changes(assistants), new players, all play part of how a student athlete does.

I like it when we get a OAD guy here and there but over all is like to see guys who were around for a few more years. Guys who will take pride in the name on the front of the jersey and not just worry about where the name on te back ranks. Guys who we get to know and care about and not guys who are just dust in the wind.

Don't get me wrong guys like BMac and Wiggins are great guys and was happy to have them. But I do think OADs can disrupt the team aspect of the game. But I'd rather have them then someone else.

As to why KU can't get early signings is beyond my imagination. Maybe the staff is giving guys their space. Maybe they are waiting to see how guys pan out their senior years? I really don't know and don't get it.

On the other hand I try not to get to wrapped up in recruiting. Especially now that the season has started. Rather care/worry/watch the guys who are already in the uniform.

@wrwlumpy I haven't stopped watching, won't either. Don't hate coach, don't think he's a bad coach, stubborn? yes worse than a mule.

I have pointed out that our turnovers were a huge turnover and usually try to point out the positives of the games, the team, the coach.

But I am allowed to call it as I see it and complain from time to time. This was a game early in the season, it's a loss that really isn't a bad loss in the way of it being just a loss, but the way it was lost hurts, stings and makes us want to bitch.

Valentine played amazing, only the 4th player at MSU to get a tripdoub, Magic F'in Johnson called him after the game, thats how impressive that performance was.

Why doesn't Perry play with that kind of fire? Why doesn't Frank or Devonte lead that way?

KU is chalked full of talent, but it doesn't have a leader or a floor general.

I view complacency as the root evil for many things in life.

That's like when you walk into a new job as management and you see things are wrong, and you ask why it's done that way, and someone gives you the proverbial answer of,

"well its how we've always done it" I hear that and I bang my head against the wall, (wait maybe thats why I have head issues? lol)

But yes complacency and doing the same thing over and over and over again is on the verge of insanity, especially if you never get different results. Yes Self and KU win with his system, 82% of the time, but those big games, those collapses, he sticks with the same thing, over and over and over again, because that's what he's always done.

First… our guys are not prepared for big games. We always come out stiff, and often we never leave a stiff form of play.

Second… we don’t make enough in-game adjustments. So our star scorer is being guarded tighter… we have to adjust and exploit what the defense gives us.

Third… part of that responsibility has to fall back on the players for not using basketball IQ to spot opportunities. Maybe they aren’t being taught what to look for? Or is it that they suddenly have amnesia when we go into a big game?

Its a real question to ask whether Self has the right players he needs for his style or not

I don't think he does. Not in mindset anyway. No one is mentally tough on the court,(Traylor is mentally tough in life itself).

I don't think this loss will bring a chip out, if Perry getting smacked in the nose against his hometown college team last year didn't give him a chip, what will?

This team doesn't have a killer on it, no one ever goes for the jugular, and the starts at Self. Go back to the '08 UNC game. KU got out early and got a huge lead, then Self went soft and took his foot off the throats and they got within 12 I think. What was good for KU is they had a big enough lead in that game that UNC had to expel all its energy just to get that close and ran out of gas.

TRob was killer for KU, just ask Mizzlose, he carried them not only in that game, but in the tournament too. Releford had leadership qualities about him too and had killer like instincts.

Show me one guy who has that on this years squad? Lucas is soft, Perry is soft, Hunter is well soft, Jamari is soft, Devonte is soft, Svi, Greene,Selden all soft. Frank has a little in him, but what he does have gets in the way of making good judgement plays. No one at the back of the bench has it either.

So to go back to your question does this team have the players to work in Self's system, no, no it doesn't.

Then again MSU shot 87% so that stings.

Statistical Nightmare! • Nov 19, 2015 12:44 AM

@drgnslayr to add to your point they had 8 blocks to our 1.

Out of those 8 I'm pretty sure Perry had 6 of them on him trying to force the ball and never looking to pass it off the block even with three guys around him. When I played we called that the black hole. The ball goes in, never comes back out.

The other two blocks came on FM and DG driving in amongst the trees and again never looking to pass out and forcing shots.

That also contributed to our low number of assist.

What is wrong with DUNKING THE BALL??

Missing layups, air balling a well it was less than foot and went two foot over the rim, at least you the glass, that square is there for a reason. All the misses and airballs can be a thing of the past if they just dunked the ball.

Go back to the Stanford exit, we got beat inside by their D, because we settled for layup and not dunks.

Perry Ellis, might not have a dunk yet this year.

We have bigs who are tall, have length, and yet are afraid to put their hands on the rim for some reason.

What is wrong with dunking the ball?

A Pure Embarrassment • Nov 18, 2015 08:04 PM

@drgnslayr What I saw in Hunter last night in limited mins. was he didn't move on offense, he stayed on the block, he set a screen three feet away from his teammate that couldn't be used. On D he ran down in the paint which is what he is to do, but he was under the basket, making Graham have to come off his man and leaving him open for a three, it ended up being a make.

He had one foul, no biggie there.

Sparty scored 7 points in his three minute stretch. KU scored 2.

MSU was +7 on the glass and had on possession in the middle of the second half where the got 3 offensive rebounds.

I believe they got a three on that after a missed three and two missed bunnies. KU had two guys down low trying to get the ball but what I noticed on the replay was Graham, ran out as the shooter, never put a body on him and then didn't look to see if the ball went in or not and ran down the court to play offense. Leaving the shooter standing there and wide open for kick out and nailing a three.

A Pure Embarrassment • Nov 18, 2015 07:57 PM

@wrwlumpy

I rewatched part of the game and noticed there were times when Traylor didn't get a rebound, and I know what you guys are thinking, "really!??" But he not only sealed his guy off but pushed his man into another MSU player allowing Mason or Ellis to get the rebound.

I'm not sure what hurt him more last night, landing on the ball on the floor weirdly, or when he lost his footing and almost got landed on by an MSU player?

The Missing Piece... • Nov 18, 2015 07:54 PM

I'd like to add that Self should have a HUGE chip on his shoulder, Be it Bmac being sat out a year, or last year with Cliff and this year with Diallo.

Yet he seems to just brush it off like dandruff.

I know. I know he can't come out yelling at the ncaa, but at some point maybe he should coach to prove a point and have that chip on his shoulder the give the NCAA the middle finger.

@SoftballDad2011 Greene doesn't need much space to get off his shot. They were hounding him, no doubt. Greene did work to get open and was ready for the ball on the wing once when Graham ignored him and instead chucked his second or third brick.

And last night he showed he can dribble by them when they crowd him, I believe he did it twice in the first half and got to the line both times. If he keeps doing that then they will have to play him straight up and that will give him even more space to get his shot off.

Svi blew by a defender last night and got into the paint, but once he got there he tried to fade away and left his shot short, with the new rules early in the season take it right at them.

Has Perry ever made the Rim regret being a rim when he scores? It's like a fine leather purse, it's always smooth and soft when he scores.

The Missing Piece... • Nov 18, 2015 03:52 PM

@drgnslayr That chip was lost due to the OAD's

In '09 you had X Henry

In '10 it was Selby

In '11 it was BMac even though he had to sit a year, and they made a run one of the best underdog runs in a long time.

In '12 Bmac was the OAD, but you had Rio and Peters that were a head case and well in the same words different meaning a head case.

In '13 Wiggins

In '14 Two OAD's Cliff and Kelly

Hard to play with a chip on ones shoulders when you aren't there but more than a year. Yes Ellis and Traylor should be playing with huge chips, but Ellis never shows emotion, maybe he needs to snap and get angry. No more designer and turn into mad man. Remember when Whithey got his nose cut open, and how he played after that, not just in that game, but the rest of the season? One would think after getting smacked in the face by WSU last year Perry would have come out this year with emotion, instead we get the robot. Taylor should have a chip on his shoulder from what life has dealt him, but then again, maybe now he's gotten comfortable? Hunter should play with a chip on his shoulder to prove to the coaches he deserves to be there. Landon should have a chip on his shoulder, but pretty sure he dropped it with his stone hands. Frank plays with a chip, but he can't do it on his own, especially in the paint, he's giving up a foot or more on some of those guys.

Do we need OAD's? Yes the can be very effective and great, but we need leaders, floor generals that want to lead.

A Pure Embarrassment • Nov 18, 2015 03:18 PM

@BeddieKU23
I think some credit has to go to Izzy and co for getting into Mason's head a little.

That and I think he pressed himself too much. He saw that DG wasn't playing well and couldn't hit water if he fell out of a boat and tried to do too much, and he can do a lot, but that wasn't his thing last night.

Credit to MSU for playing tough D and scouting correctly on our guys. I think that flustered them
