when 2 of those misses were at the most important part of the game.

Are you talking the two misses that were on the front end of one and ones? Not only did those misses cost us two points but possibly 4. If you want to take in the misses on the front end and then add the back end as misses as well, the FT% gets really ugly.

With all the whistles that will be called this year it is vital more than ever that FT's are made at 83% or higher, and you can't miss the front ends, killer man just killer.

I don't go to movie theaters in general any more due to my headaches. I can't control the volume, and who wants to get up and leave after paying that much to get in.

In the long run I want to see this movie. I have seen a documentary on it and this Dr and how the NFL tried to get his medical lic. revoked.

It will put them in a bad light, the NFL that is, for awhile, then they will hype Super Bowl 50 and unfortunately people will forget that this is a true story.

So Who ya Takin'? • Nov 18, 2015 02:27 PM

I guess I should put my own down to get the ball rollin'

Big East, even though I live in Omaha or a 'burn of it not taking the BlueJays. I'll go with Marquette, Loved Al Mcguire
ACC, without question UNC, Dean Smith enough said.
SEC, going a different route here and taking Georgia, maybe it's on my mind, or maybe it's Hershel Walker? Would have taken Auburn, Bo Jackson, Charles Barkely, Frank Thomas, but Cam Newton ruins all those for me.
BigTen, this one hurts after last night, but yes I take MSU, Magic, Heathcote and I have no problems with Izzo, he gets it done man.
Big12, since I can not nor can you take KU, I have to take OU. Both football and basketball get my respect, even the Boz.
Pac12, this one was my hardest, could say UCLA thanks to Wooden being the greatest of all time, but Bill Walton kills me. But who else is there? Can't do Arizona after 97, ASU had point shaving, USC Matt Leinert, enough said, Cal maybe. Stanford NO!! Not just because of our tournament run in with them, but the Lopez twins too. Oregon, no. Oregon State no. Washington no. Washington State no. OK so even with Walton I'll take UCLA, but wait Ben Howland, oh never mind. UCLA.

But no matter where I may roam and as long as I have freedom of speech, it is ROCK CHALK JAYHAWK all the way, all the time!

A Pure Embarrassment • Nov 18, 2015 02:17 PM

Not sure where else to put this so here it goes.

I didn't get to watch the game last night but this morning, wasn't allowed to watch it last night for other reasons stated in another post, long long long story. I have complaints, I have thoughts, I have issues. Why did KU change it's offense late in the game when it was working for us? Why did it go from high low and the weave to "Perry must touch it every time down the floor?" He can score, but it was like Self scripted the change no matter what the game score. But it kills the flow of the game for the other 4 guys.

Hunter played very very little, I think I read here 3 mins. In those 3 mins MSU scored 7 KU 2.

Lucas needs to borrow some gloves from the football team so he can hold on to the ball, may he never be handed a baby, I'm pretty sure he'd bobble it and possibly drop it.

How did we miss so many FT's down the stretch?

They had 9 blocks, pretty sure Frank had two and Perry had the other 7, "OUCH" no rim ever when Perry scores. Dunk the damn ball man!! That goes to all the bigs, Dunk it!! Go strong, soft is for toilet paper not post players.

Jamari and Brennen, keep driving to the hole, you get fouled with the new rules.

Svi can dribble, he can pass, he can't shoot in the paint unless it's a layup.

DG man I get it, everyone has an off night, sometimes putting the gun back in the holster on an off night is a good thing.

Bragg, speed, athletic, needs control of his body, skinny or not, he gets going and speeds up but can't control his own body, man is he long though. See good things there.

Jamari, two bad fouls back to back, not bad D, need to dunk it like the other bigs need to, and not settle for a finger roll or short jumper, those get blocked against true bigs. fight fight fight for those rebounds, so a few nice block outs, just didn't time the rebounds well coming off the rim.

Frank, get on the treadmill, if you are going to try and go 107mph the whole game, better be in shape for it. And don't take your frustrations out on a missed FT by making a dumb pass the next time down the floor, missed the front end twice, I believe two straight trips down the floor and then a TO, thats 6 possible points that went bye bye.

As a team getting out rebounded by 20 is a joke, time to put the cone on the rim at practice and do some rebounding drills, lots and lots of them. Maybe Self needs to break out the football helmets and pads??

Positive ALERT!!!! Low turnovers, hey something has to come up roses.

OK deep breath, count to 10, get the floral print shirts out and the destine on the nose. Lets get ready for Maui!!!!!

@HawksWin If you are done after two games, and are jumping off the wagon, don't ever forget that sometimes the journey is the destination. Hold on tight and take the downs with the ups and take it all in. You never know what will happen next, that's why they play the games on the floor and not on paper.

So Who ya Takin'? • Nov 18, 2015 02:05 PM

Nope not to win it all, that would be a ridiculous prediction at this point of the season. But as I sat in a hunting cabin for a few days with some good friends from all over the country and away from internet, cell phones and TV we had interesting conversations.

This is the question of the week. You can't pick your team, i.e. here we can't pick Kansas, but you have to pick a team from each of the power 5 conferences. Big East, ACC, SEC, BigTen, Big12 and PAC12. We thought about other conferences but since there has been so many shake ups and name changes(again no internet to research), we just kept it at the Power5.

So who are your takin'?

Cheick.... no wait a minute.... Devonte.

If he gets cleared in the next 13.5 hours then I'll give it to you.

Adjustments vs recruiting.

Is it Selfs inability to adjust his offense to the players/athletes on his roster.

Or

Is it Selfs recruiting the top players every year even though they don't fit his system?

If he wasn't pressured by the $ of shoe cos and boosters and the out rage of fans would he recruit more players that fit his system?

If he had a roster full of guys that fit his system would his system be what he truly wants it to be? Would he have the wins he's had with a solid go of guys that fit his system?

That way he wouldn't have to adjust his system to the players needs, he would have all the pieces in place for his system to run smoothly.

I think trying to get top recruits to sign can be a hinderence to any coach and their system. Some will adopt a new system to fit a player here and there. Some don't. Some don't worry about getting top 10 guys because they don't fit their system.

No haven't watched yet. Some highlights here and there.

WTF Is the New KU Mantra • Nov 06, 2015 03:50 PM

@JhawkAlum why does Traylor see the floor? I think it's his energy and or motor.

I know. I know a lot of people don't like those words. But in his case I think it's contagious to other guys on the floor. Maybe he gets a tipped pass on D that leads to a run out? Guys see that and feel they need to push up their game.

No he's not a shot blocker or rebounder per se but he does have something that works for him and the other 4 guys feed off of.

Other guys in the past and present with high motors just off the top of my head. Jerod Hasse. Frank Mason. Sheron Collins. Yes they had other intangibles and skill sets but don't discount their motor and energy they brought to the game.

WTF Is the New KU Mantra • Nov 06, 2015 03:21 PM

@JhawkAlum If Huddy could somehow figure a way to Lucas and Traylor we'd have an all American 5.

I think the hard part for us KU fans is that we have been spoiled with above average to great big men for the past 30 years. From Manning to Ostertag to Lefrentz, Pollard, Simien, Shady, Cole, The Mori, TRob and Embid. I'm sure I'm missing more.

Those are really really big shoes to fill.

Maybe we are just spoiled?

WTF Is the New KU Mantra • Nov 06, 2015 03:01 PM

@JhawkAlum I know a lot of fans don't want see Traylor on the floor.

In reality Id rather see him in the floor over Lucas who at times looks like he's being forced to be a basketball player and is just going through the motions.

This is just my opinion. Take it for what it's worth. Do with it as you please.

Vick • Nov 06, 2015 02:49 PM

If he's not in the regular rotation he adds depth to a team that may need it with the way fouls could be called early.

He will make the rotation players better due to him at practice, pushing them and stretching them to work harder on non game days so going into a game the man who is guarding ten and visa versa might not be as talented.

If he plays 8-12 mins a game or not his size, motor and skills will make this team better.

How many? • Nov 05, 2015 08:55 PM

When I walked away from the game I needed a way to pay for school so I started bartending in a little dive bar with lots of regulars and just the random crowd.

I was fresh faced looked young and innocent. So every time one of the regulars would swear they'd all look at me to see if I was offended. I look at them and say "don't worry my mom said worse". That usually broke the ice.

I saw friends argue in a bar over stupid things and strangers get bent out of shape because they overheard something that didn't concern them. I broke up a few here and there, but I never let a guy get kicked why he was down. Everyone needs someone to back them in certain situations.

Maybe it's why I don't like on and I speak my mind when I see it.

But as for me, if you can offend me you'd be the first since I was in JR High.

I know of guys who always played better coming off the bench than starting. They could see the game for a bit before getting in and just have that little edge, maybe it's how a D is playing a certain passing lane or how the refs are calling it.

But the committee does have 20 fouls to throw at an opponent as it stands now. Not sure if thats a good or bad thing.

Matt Tait article on KU ball • Nov 05, 2015 05:51 PM

@Texas-Hawk-10 Well I've played for different coaches, spoke with a lot of HS and college coaches and even youth sports coaches. You are the only person that I have EVER, yes ever heard say that FT% is crap. It doesn't matter how many you take, if you only take four, would you rather be at 75% or 25% or 50%?

I have worked basketball camps where they watch kids shoot free throws throughout the camp, they keep track of his parentage not how many he took. Yes they take into consideration how he got to the line, but if he gets there one time and goes 2 for 2 thats good. If he gets there 7 times and only hits 3 and misses the front end of a one on one now he is basically 3 of 8. Less than 50% is horrible. Less than 70% isn't good. Less than 80% is on track, 85% plus is all good, doesn't matter if you take 5 or 18.

Look at the bonus points it gives you alone. If you can't get to the line because you want to settle for jump shots, then you better be able to knock those down from deep. If you are a great outside shooter then your FT% should be high, it's a set shot, take advantage of it when you do get fouled.

If you play solid D and don't give up a lot of shots to a team and yet they shoot for 67% from the field then there isn't many rebounds you can get either. If you play a team that can't hit the broad side of a barn or water from a boat then your rebound numbers should be sky high. Same can be said if you have an off night. So to say FT% without context is crap, so is rebounding. What did both teams take for attempts in a game, not possessions, but shot attempts, without that rebounds are just another number a crap number as you say.

Let's Bragg about Bragg for a minute • Nov 05, 2015 04:45 PM

@Statmachine that's awesome. No reason to bash a kid. Most guys who play at that age are harder on themselves antsy way. Need to be built back up and supported.

Keep it up

Let's Bragg about Bragg for a minute • Nov 05, 2015 02:15 PM

@Statmachine My favorite line was "He threw it off the back of a Gorilla." That made me laugh

Matt Tait article on KU ball • Nov 05, 2015 02:12 PM

@Texas-Hawk-10

Here's stats from three different actual games

Game 1:
Team 1---- FT% .588 Total rebounds 34 Ast 13 steals 10 blocks 7
Team 2---- FT% .400 Total rebounds 49 Ast 18 steals 9 blocks 4

Who won?

Game 2:
Team 1---- FT% .632 Total rebounds 28 Ast 14 Steals 11 blocks 3
Team 2---- FT% .933 Total rebounds 39 Ast 14 steals 11 blocks 1

Who won?

Game 3:
Team 1---- FT% .667 Total rebounds 35 Ast 9 steals 6 blocks 5
Team 2---- FT% .714 Total rebounds 43 Ast 12 steals 4 blocks 11

Who won?

Now before I give you the teams and the final scores, let it be known that the FT% doesn't indicate how many of those misses were the front end of one and ones. The reason I bring that up is that if you make the first one you get a shot at an easy second point. Miss and you left two points on the line. This is scoring opportunities, that are simple and easy. Could you imagine how low the FT% would be if yo missed the front end of the one and one and you got docked for automatically missing the second? Its a scoring opportunity and it easily can change the outcome of the game.

OK game 1
Team 1 2003 Syracuse 81 points
Team 2 2003 Kansas 78 points KU favored by 15 rebounds and got beat by three, maybe FT% cost them in that game?

Game 2
Team 1 2008 Memphis 68
Team 2 2008 Kansas 75 KU out rebounded them by 11 and won, but yet out shot them from the FT% by .301 That's a big difference in a game. Who know how many of their misses were front ends??

Game 3
Team 1 2012 KU 59
Team 2 2012 Kentucky 67 Not only did Kentucky beat KU on the boards but at the line. KU only had 9 TOs in that game to their 11, blocks might have played a part as well, but getting to the line and making those FT's is huge.

Maybe there is a correlation between getting FT opportunities with rebounds and visa versa, there are other factors as well. But to call FT% crap, no way no how. You say it's a disadvantage for a perimeter team to count FT%, well if it is guard laden aren't they going togged beat on the boards as well? If a team pounds it inside and their bigs are getting fouled and their bigs miss FTs like Shaq then they left points on the line, free points non the less. You have to make the most of your opportunities to score easily, the FT line is just that an easy way to score. It's not contested, you don't have towny about getting blocked or shooting over someone, it's the same shot every time, unless you count whats behind the supports.

Matt Tait article on KU ball • Nov 04, 2015 11:18 PM

@Texas-Hawk-10 FG% FT% Turnovers. Those stats to me can be glimpsed st and see who won the game.

Rebounding could be low if you are shooting at a high FG%. Unless you are then basing it on defensive rebounds alone. But how many shot attempts did they have? How many steals did you get before s shot even went up? How many times did you turn them over?

Rebounds can turn a game just like blocked shots and steals. Play good D they take bad shots have a low % then yes you should have higher rebound numbers.

But rebounds aren't the first few stars I look at in the box scores. FG%. FT% and turnovers.

Yes the obvious is the 30 second shot clock and the expanded (Duke) circle, let's not forget the 10 seconds to get the ball across the half court mark won't be reset in all situations. Coaches can't call a live ball TO and they get one less TO in the game.

The wide lane does open up the dribble drive more as it does not allow for post players to camp as near the rim as they do in te college game. The international game calls three seconds more frequently than te NBA does on offensive players do it keeps their bigs moving, making defenders move out of the way as well.

Not sure I think it's the NBA that has a defensive three second call ass well so defenders can't camp under the Tim to block shots. Not sure could be international ball though. I just know I've seen it n

Matt Tait article on KU ball • Nov 04, 2015 01:22 PM

@jayhawkbychoice I hear you. In my original post I didn't use any names.

I voiced my opinion just as that an opinion of some of the things I had been reading on this site over and over again.

It got to me and yes I lashed out. I let it fly. Then my opinion was taken to task, so like many other on here I defended myself.

There is no reason for anyone to walk on egg shells around me. I know for a fact that there were many who supported me either in the post or in private messaging as they too have run into the buzz saw and liked seeing someone else out there fighting.

STATS ARE HUGE in sports. I know I played football and basketball. I looked at stat sheets every Fridsy night. Mondsy during film sessions. Stats have their place. But to turn stats into one persons reason for something but not allowing another person to use the stats they want I find ironic.

I have never stood on a soap box. I just finally drew a line in the sand. Maybe I crossed it too? Who knows? Maybe the waves washed it out?

I find there are great posters on this site that are afraid to voice their opinion though because they are afraid of being tore apart or made to look foolish for having their own beliefs. I'm not saying it's done by one person alone. @HighEliteMajor knows the game, I for one do not know to what degree, but reading what he rights can be informative. But it can also make people feel that their opinions and thoughts don't matter and aren't good enough.

Sorry to @HighEliteMajor for my rants and raves against you.

Sorry @jayhawkbychoice for ruffling your feathers.

But I will say this in closing. I'm not one to sit by and watch and let things go. Just because it's always been done that way doesn't mean it's right. Sometimes we all need to be called out, just as you did to me. So I'll let it go. For now, truth be told I hope others see this and do as I did from time to time, stand up for what they want to.

I think we all should keep each other in line. Call people out for getting mighty and over the top. Stand and rise. Feel good about your post. Back others opinions as you would your own if you agree.

@jayhawkbychoice You don't have to agree with me. I don't have to agree with @highelitemajor either.

So if I offended anyone else out there with my public rant and rave. I'm sorry. If you would like a personal apology please message me and I'll get it out to you. If there is anything else I'll be getting ready for dear season.

@HighEliteMajor why? Why are one persons stats irrelevant and yours all there is in the world?

I don't get that.

Does anyone get that?

Why when you ask for stats to back up an argument and someone takes the time to produce them you discredit them for not making sense or being irrelevant?

This is what I was getting at earlier. Why is it that when you say something we must bow down to your holiness, but when someone says something to ruffle your feathers its BS and we shouldn't take them for what they say. Just because you say so.

I will take your talk on the game. I think you have some good points here and there. Are you the greatest basketball mind on this board? Probably not, but I don't have proof to prove it one way or another just as I don't have proof what others basketball IQ is or coaching accumen might be.

But when you step behind your lecture and stand on your soap box it gets tiring to read over and over and over again.

Ok go for it. Come at me with your personal attacks like you always do.

Well now that I have the legendary Kenny Rogers song the Gambler stuck in your head, let me ask a few questions going into this season based on the past few months

How much did Coach Self show at the WUG's? Did he gamble and show his new free flowing offense over the standard Bill Self High low? Was it to get through the quicker clock? Did he bluff with it and knew all along that having "non KU" players on his squad he needed an easier concept for the WUG's?

Will he show more of this free flowing offense in the tune up games, or will he keep his poker face on and not show any new wrinkles from years past, in hopes of surprising Michigan State?

I have to wonder with the shorter clock if the offense will change from the high low to more of a motion/flex offense or if the high low will just be sped up to fit?

Feel free to openly ask your own questions going into the "preseason" and maybe as a collective we can come up with some answers.

I for one can't wait for the season to take off and see what the newbies will bring and the elders have improved on

"And the night got deathly quiet
And his faced lost all expression
He said, "If you're gonna play the game, boy
You gotta learn to play it right"

Right now I'm trying to figure out "did you really think..." Maybe because it has the word "really" in it. It took me several years to figure out the Riverboat Gambler's vernacular, especially his use of the word "really." And when he uses that word repeatedly... like "really, really, really" turns out to mean something totally different than just one "really."

That's a tough one. "Really" could have multiple meanings just by the tone it was used in and or placement of hands, either in the air or on her hips.

I tend to believe it is a rhetorical question. No right or wrong answer.

Also if you want to get back at a Southern woman. Just tell her that her sweet teas wasn't any good.
