Something is rotten in the state of Denmark. - Marcellus to Horatio in Shakespeare's Hamlet

At what time does the NCAA become involved and starts looking at the "hire dad and the kid comes along" and "hire failed coach and his recruits come along" issues?

Someone posted before that he had serious family issues? Maybe that poster can re-post the information since he is now a distinct probability for KU.

Brett Ballard New Washburn Men's BB Head Coach β€’ Apr 06, 2017 07:42 PM

@BShark

Interesting. I am curious..is a HC position for a Division II school better than and Assistant Coach position at an Elite conference school? Being from Hutchinson, it brings Ballard close to home and Alma Mater KU. Hopefully it is a steeping stone to a bigger position down the road. Best of luck to him; I imagine we will see him coaching court side at AFH in the near future.

@BeddieKU23

Good point. Playing time is always a big plus; however, he has a much bigger stage and exposure at KU. Superior players are not afraid of competition and the ones that are afraid usually are not NBA material.

Juiston is a unique case given the conditions that led him to JuCo. To me, JuCo play level is relatively low and not necessarily a good indicator of how the player will do in Division I play, but again, Juiston is not the typical JuCo player. His low ceiling appears to be Jamari Traylor, who Coach Self liked and played a fair amount, and his high ceiling is unknown. If Juiston can do as much as Jamari did, it would be pretty good.

Another QB Conundrum? β€’ Apr 06, 2017 07:13 PM

@Kcmatt7

I thought we were taking about KU and College football and not the NFL. Why even bring up Tebow who is the BEST example of a successful college QB? You posted your view and I posted mine...why do you have a problem with it? If you think you have a better argument, please make it instead of attacking me personally...and I might even agree with you.

Recruiting Master Thread Part Deux β€’ Apr 06, 2017 07:06 PM

@BeddieKU23

Considering how many time I have paid my way to Vegas, I would not pass on a freebie trip there so I don't blame Juiston from visiting UNLV.

I know there are a number of players becoming available and there might be more in the near future; however, if KU can sign Juiston and Allen and no one else, I would be very happy.:+1:

This is the time of the year when Coach Self does what he does best...prepare to be surprised.

Tebow? You mean the player that was 3 times first team All-American? 3 times finalist and one time winner of the Heisman Trophy? 2 times National Champion? The Tebow that is almost unanimously consider the best all-time college QB? That Tebow? I would take him any time...

Bragg is leaving β€’ Apr 06, 2017 06:09 PM

Sorry to see him go, I was hoping he would come back a much improved player....oh well...

I think the kid has potential but maybe he needed a change of scenery and a place with less expectation/pressure where he can get a fresh start and leave his past issues behind. No question that wherever he ends up he likely will be the star player or at least a starter, something that at KU seemed unlikely with Preston coming in and apparently Bragg giving up on fighting for the position like Lucas, a player with much less potential, did.

Good luck to him wherever he goes, I will miss his piano playing at Late Night. :disappointed_relieved:

Told You So β€’ Apr 06, 2017 12:06 AM

The WSU AD issued a statement yesterday indicating that the rumor, which was reported by a Wichita TV station as coming from an AD employee, was not true.

I believe it is a matter of time before this happens since it would be very beneficial to both parties. As I mentioned on a previous thread, WSU would not even have to re-start football since the conference already has Navy as a football only member and has 12 member for football and with WSU it would have 12 members for basketball as well. All Division I teams in the state will now be in major conference.

Recruiting Master Thread Part Deux β€’ Apr 05, 2017 09:21 PM

@Kcmatt7

My question was that considering how close he is/was to leaving for the NBA now, what are the chances that he sits one year and plays at least one year? This would delay his departure by two full years, right? Wouldn't he be better off being the big shot at Memphis for one more year and then leaving for the NBA?

Recruiting Master Thread Part Deux β€’ Apr 05, 2017 08:29 PM

@BeddieKU23

If Dedrick almost left for the NBA, what are the chances he stays at KU for two years since he will have to sit one year?

Some more Chuckle/Giggles β€’ Apr 05, 2017 07:56 PM

@justanotherfan

There is a chance that the new administration will change the original mandate although this seems unlikely. I don't believe the change in law in North Carolina is final yet and according to many, will not meet the "politically correct" requirements, so it is not a done deal..

Some more Chuckle/Giggles β€’ Apr 05, 2017 05:23 PM

Keep in mind that the NCAA might remove games from Wichita like it did from North Carolina because of political considerations. Remember, California state schools are not allowed to play in Kansas.

3 Generations of Bill β€’ Apr 05, 2017 09:29 AM

@approxinfinity

I would add that a new generation started in 2015-2016 when we saw Coach Self change his proven system, starting at the World University Games, for a more open system and followed up this past season with a completely different system featuring the 4-1 scheme that proved to be highly effective.

No question that Coach Self's style has undergone a very positive change and he has moved to a new level that promises to be highly successful and hopefully results in a title or titles in the near future. KU is now projected as an early top 3-5 team and even #1 in a couple of early pre-season rankings, even when it is losing the unanimous College POY and a top 3 draft pick and KU is not done recruiting; no doubt, a huge vote of confidence on his coaching ability.

KU Players Leaving/Staying Tracker β€’ Apr 05, 2017 12:59 AM

@ParisHawk

The risk is that he would be highly rated and the refusal to stay in the draft would be held against him and his coach. I don’t see any reply that addresses this point.

I think this is where we disagree. Players go to the combine to see if they ARE highly rated so they can join the draft. If they are highly rated I would think they would go on the draft and not back to school. They would go back to school only if they ARE NOT highly rated...wouldn't you agree?

@HighEliteMajor

We just needed a little tweak to be in perfect sync....I like it.as well. I have a hunch that we agree even more on non-basketball issues. :smile:

@jaybate-1.0

The injury to Goss could only have been one of the decisive drivers along with the fouling out of the Zaga big, and Extra possession and lost momentum from the technical ,

Except Gonzaga came out from the technical two points ahead since it made the two free throws and UNC missed both, By the way, the sequence was replayed at nauseum and it showed that Berry cleanly stripped the ball from Karnowski who in turn took Berry down by the neck. There should have not been a foul on Berry and only the one on Karnowski which was not a judgment call but by rule had to be a flagrant. Definitely an advantage for Gonzaga.

I argue Zaga appeared a significantly better team.

I have read 15-20 recaps of the game and no one else seems to share this opinion so you are in a minority of one.

I argue there was IMHO an appearance of no calling sharply favoring UNC. I argue that no calling made the game CLOSE enough for the factors above to tip the game to UNC.

No calling? Are you joking? The whole commentary during and after the game was that there were too many calls that hurt both teams equally. Even the Gonzaga boards are not clamoring there was biased but bad refereeing. The only call that seemed to favor UNC was when Meeks appeared to have his hand on the line while tied up, To that I can counter that in the picture I posted on the other thread the Gonzaga player is in-bounding the ball with his foot on the line. Two obvious calls missed, one fro each team.

Otherwise, you have to come up with an explanation why the game was close and explain away the appearance of asymmetry in no calls.

Why is it so difficult to believe that the National Title game can be close? isn't it the most likely outcome when the top two teams left in the tournament are playing? Remember that Gonzaga made it to the finals via a horrible call when a Gonzaga players blocked a Northwestern shot by sticking his hand through the hoop which is an automatic goal tending and yet. none was called. Bad calls happen all the time.

In your mind, the only way the game was not rigged is if Gonzaga won comfortably...it did not, UNC was able to close the deal much like KU closed a lot of close games during the season, it happens, deal with it.

@Blown

You cannot just look at the tournament percentage participation in isolation. Say, if 75% of the top 16 teams (12 teams) are from the EST or CST zone, it really would not make much difference where the rest of the teams are from since the great majority of Champions come from these teams. I will guess that a disproportionate number of all teams come from the EST and CST zones anyway.

My points is that if teams from different time zones want to win the title, all they have to do is win games. I don't believe the NCAA told KU to have a lousy shooting day so UNC would have an easier path to the title....all KU...or Oregon...or Gonzaga had to do is win and they did not and the NCAA had nothing to do with this.

@Blown

Here is a list of all the basketball conferences ranked by Jeff Sagarin:

!image.png β†—

Now, look at the various conferences and see where they are located. You will see that the majority are in the EST or CST zones.

Just look at the top 5:

  • Big 12 - CST, EST
  • ACC - EST
  • Big East - EST
  • Big Ten - EST, CST
  • SEC - CST, EST

You can see that the majority of the top programs are in the EST and CST zones and none in the MST or PST zones. You can go down the list and you will see that the only PST and MST zone conferences in the top 20 are the PAC 12 (6), Mountain West (9) and West Coast (11) and the Western Athletic that includes CST zone teams, and the only major conference is the PAC 12. you can continue going down the list and you will see the same pattern.

No question that the bulk of Division I college basketball is played in the EST and CST zones and thus it makes sense that the tournaments champions would come from these two zones.

@BShark

I am not trying to be a contrarian and as I indicated really don't know much about him but I take it that he is projected to be a solid 4 year player but not necessarily an immediate contributor?

This is what I read about Garret:

"The 6-7 senior guard nearly averaged a triple-double for the season, finishing at 17.3 points, 10.4 rebounds and 9.1 assists per game while leading Skyline to the Class 6A state semifinals. He recorded 12 triple-doubles and 32 double-doubles in 36 games as Skyline (34-2) reached the state tournament for the first time in school history."

These are Russel Westbrooke like numbers. :smile: A player that can dish out that many assists has the potential to be at least a serviceable PG, don't you think? I am not saying that he would be the primary PG but he could be a very good option as the backup PG.

Recruiting Master Thread Part Deux β€’ Apr 04, 2017 06:06 PM

@Kcmatt7

Garret played PG in HS and would make a decent PG considering he is now 6'-7" ,averaged almost a triple double for the season and is considered one of the top dunkers in Texas, so he is obviously pretty athletic.

Recruiting Master Thread Part Deux β€’ Apr 04, 2017 05:46 PM

@BShark

There is a big difference in recruiting after the season is over and most of the quality players are spoken for. At this time, all programs are scrambling to fill available schoolies and any available player becomes a lot more valuable and a hot commodity. Remember that KU picked up Evan Maxwell from Liberty University a couple of years ago and he was in demand because there were not many players left?

This is the list of schools on the ESPN site as of April 4...

Recruiting Master Thread Part Deux β€’ Apr 04, 2017 05:28 PM

@BeddieKU23

Is Allen really a good option? He is ranked #149, 3 star by Rivals and the Schools he visited in addition to NC State were St Louis and Nebraska. He seems more of a mid major recruit to me but I really don't know much about him.

@HighEliteMajor

Hard to argue with Coach Williams number. I have noticed that as I get older I become more pragmatic and tent to follow my head rather than my heart which is what I tended to do in my younger years. Having said that, it seems that Coach Self has being going through a similar process over the last couple of years and his rigid approach has changed and now he is coaching to the team's strengths rather than sticking with the system that served him well most of his career but could not work with the personnel at hand,

Maybe we have seen the turning point in his career when he proved to himself that one single system, regardless of how well it worked in the past, is not the answer, and a more flexible approach is the better way to go. If this is indeed the case, we can certainly expect a more successful second half of his career and hopefully a few titles as well.

No question in my mind that the 2017-2018 team should be equally as good or even better that the one that just finished its season. On the big side, Lucas is leaving but we get Doke back and all the other players with one additional year of experience and add Preston. No question this is an improvement.

On the small side KU loses Mason and Jackson (is/was he a big?). A unanimous POY cannot be replaced but if Devonte plays to his potential and KU picks another PG, the drop should not be significant. Jackson is such a versatile player to replace but we have Svi, Vick and Newman coming back and Cunliffe and Garret are very capable wings that should see considerable playing time. No question the team will, at least on paper, be as good or even a better outside shooting team; a net improvement no doubt. All the very early projection I have seen have KU back as a top 5 team. A usual, the programs seems to be in good shape...no rebuilding this time, just reloading.

Gonzaga vs UNC Game Thread β€’ Apr 04, 2017 05:58 AM

@Crimsonorblue22

Bad calls both ways...

@jaybate-1.0

I am not sure what game you were watching. The refs were bad, very bad because they called way to many ticky tac fouls but they called them fairly evenly on both teams, Gonzaga got to the bonus and double bonus a lot sooner than UNC so a reasonable person could infer that more were called on UNC and also sooner. Replay clearly showed that Berry cleanly stripped the ball from Karnowski and got pulled down by the neck by Karnowski and hit on the head with the hip while falling down, a clear flagrant by rule but Berry got called for the non-existing foul; that was a game changing call.

No doubt the refs killed the tempo and both teams shot horribly and the game was a forgettable one. Now, why is it again that bad refereeing makes you lose respect for Coach Williams?

If this was engineered entertainment, then they should get their money back..it was anything but entertaining.

Bragg - Thoughts and Feelings? β€’ Apr 04, 2017 01:43 AM

@Kubie

I believe that with a little detective work on a previous thread we pretty much established that the team did not get to their hall until well after it had been reported to the police. Since several players were named as potential witnesses, the mots likely explanation is that while they were walking to the hall they might have seen someone leave. Other than the Star, I don't know of anyone that has even remotely tied the players to the incident in question. A non issue, really.

I believe Carlton is going through some growing pains, both physical and maturity wise, and in the off season he will start all over and turn into a very serviceable player.
