WVU will be as pumped up as it ever has been. It has now lost 2 games in a row and neither opponent was a top team in the conference. If WVU loses to KU, for all practical purposes and with 2 home loses it would be pretty much of of contention to win the conference...this is THE one game it does not want and cannot afford to lose and the $25K are also a big incentive to Huggy.
I might add that the FG% includes the 3pt% so, if you take Jackson's crappy shooting from the 3, his FG% would go up but hard to tell how much without all the figures. In other words, his FG% might be much better if he quits taking 3 point shots. On the other hand, becoming a decent 3 point shooter increases his draft value quite a bit.
You must work for the MSM, way to take my posts out of context to fit your premise. My premise is based on the fact that coaches DO NOT collude with each other to change the score and this is why there are no investigations. If they did collude, as you suggest, it would be called "game fixing" and you bet there would be investigations. It is really that simple. You can twist my words any way you want but it does not change the facts.
No, it is a waste of time and bandwidth.
Mitch is pretty fearless and plays like he has Bragg's body; Bragg does not like to bang inside and plays like he has Mitch's body. ⛹🏻
KU beat a not so good team and its RPI went down; maybe winning this type of game should not increase your numbers but it certainly should not lower them.
I still like Massey ↗ the best...
Is this the equivalent of asymmetric trifectation over the contrails in the Crimean peninsula between the petroshoe corporations, the Vatican and the old world oligopolies while the NCAA infarctates over coaches taking it easy in order to change the outcome of future games?
If it is, I am all for it.
Already being discussed in the Royals thread...
If you think the BPI is bad look at the official NCAA RPI. KU is down to #6, UCLA is #22 and WVU is #44. I am not even going to talk about KU; however, does anyone in his right mind thinks there are 21 teams better than UCLA or 43 teams better than WVU? I certainly do not.
Original report was based on a tweeter post but Dominican papers just starting to report. A very tragic and sad event, particularly for Royals fans.
Your are changing the original premise of the discussion. You originally postulated that it could be possible for Texas to take it easy so KU would be fresh for West Virginia and now you are changing it to coaches taking it easy to protect their own players. I don't believe the first case happens because by its own nature would involve collusion which is not only unethical but illegal. Yes, it would be rare to have an investigation because it really does not happen. The second case is completely different and happens all the time when coaches rest players not only during specific games but also like Popovic did, held the starters the entire game, and was heavily fined by the NBA since it compromises the game and deprives fans from watching the stars they paid to see play.
In short, holding back to benefit your own team is an accepted practice although frowned upon by Vegas since bettors can bet on the total number of points scored and anything that artificially changes that affects betting. Holding back to benefit your opponent does not happen.
This is what I said from the beginning since it was the original premise of your post.
Not exactly. From what I read, ↗he said he did not know; he said it did no appear to be swelling and he thought it might just be a stinger but he was not sure.
I take it is too difficult for you to believe that coaches just don't do this, regardless of what you think.
Part of the problems is that courtside tickets are so expensive that mostly corporations buy them and you have people siting there for whom it is more of a social than a sports event. I have seen younger couples with young kids sitting there who visited with each other the entire game and paid little attention to the game and the kids never took their eyes off their cell phones. At times, they almost have to be shamed into standing during rallies. I would refer to see students sitting there but I think that ship sailed a long time ago...
No, but I watched the KSU game and it was continuously loud, very loud. Lately at AFH the noise comes and goes and it is not quite like it used to be.
Like boxers say...the best defense is a good offense. I will take being the worst 18-1 team ever over being the best 1-18 ever.
Bramlage was really loud, louder than AFH has been lately. I am not the only one that has observed this, the Kansan has a story on this. ↗
I stand corrected. This is indeed a change from previous years.
Tim Donaghy was investigated by the FBI and pleaded guilty to federal charges of fixing games by making calls that change the score. Colluding to slow down the game and by extension change the points scored would appear to be the definition of doing just that. I cannot imagine a coach ever agreeing to do something like that.
A win is a win is a win...I will take winning ugly over losing pretty any time.
I am sure the Big Dub would hug you right back...he is a really nice guy.
Happy birthday...🍾 🎂
Game day is scheduled before the season begins. Duke was just about unanimous pre season #1.
Not running up the score is not only good sportsmanship but good coaching as well since it rests YOUR OWN players and not the other teams; it is something you do for your own team and has nothing to do with professional courtesy.
Also, a coach asking an assistant to violate the rules is not only highly unethical but likely illegal as well and if the NCAA finds out it would get your program in deep trouble...what exactly does this have to do with professional courtesy?
Having your players go soft so the other team is rested for its next game comes close to the definition of "fixing" a game and it would land that coach in the bullseye of a DOJ investigation.
Are you joking? Not running up the score on an opponent after the game is decided is good sportsmanship and protects your own players. Holding your team back to spare your opponent wear and tear so it is fresher for the next game is negligent and I would personally consider it to be malpractice on the part of the coach that does such thing. I would absolutely lose respect for any coach that does this.
There is no professional courtesy in competitive sports. Smart will do everything he can to win the game and couldn't care less what happens to KU next...I wouldn't expect anything less.
Garret is a multi-year player and Newman is not a sure thing, as far as I know. If Trae is afraid of competition from fellow freshman Garret or even Newman, then he probably is not as good as we think he is and does not need to come to KU. I like players with the...I fear no one and I can beat anybody...attitude.
I will never concede a game, specially before it is played.
Remember...KU never loses, sometimes it just runs out of time. 😎
The Florida game was huge because Florida was the defending champion with just about the entire team back and went to repeat. Huge win by KU but not much of a court rush since it was played at a very small venue (Orleans) and it was just a handful of drunk fans...
You are absolutely correct. Sometimes I watch PAC games when there is nothing better to do and they come at 10:00 pm CST; I can't imagine watching a game at 11:00 pm EST.
Normally the bulk of the top teams are on the East; however, this year there are 4 solid West coast teams and at least 3 In mid America that can make the Final Four.
That was two years ago. Completely different personnel for both teams and WVU's defense is superior to the one 2 years ago. WVU has 10 players averting double digit mpg and 4 more averaging between 6 and 9 minutes...they have lots of experienced bodies to throw at you. UK has 9 players playing double digit mpg, but only 4 are playing more than 25 minutes; it has used a lot of bench in their blowouts but in its 3 main games it has used primarily a 7 player rotation.
Someone sent me this, I thought it was funny...Texas fans probably disagree...
It really depends on where in Colorado you are going and which way you are getting there.
Indeed, We engineers are more into reality and common sense...no crystals or pyramids or the zodiac for us...
UCLA, Gonzaga and now Oregon and possibly Arizona from the PST and KU and Baylor and probably Creighton (less so now that their top player is out for the season) from the CST zone are all FF candidates. Are you telling me that out of this 7 teams with a decent shot to tre FF only one makes it...considering that UCLA, KU and Gonzaga will likely be in different regions? Possible, Yes, Probable? No...and no amount of seeding or miss-seeding can accomplish this.
The difference is that this year we have more non-EST top teams. Of the current top 4, only Villanova is an EST team.
We would have two injured guards then and at that point we probably go 3-2?
Yes, there was small group of fans that storm the court but it was not the court full of fans storming we see at other places. I had the fortune of being at that game, 4th row behind the KU bench...best game I have ever watched live.
You are forgetting that Vick is also a guard...
We know that any team that makes it to the dance has a puncher's chance of making it to the Final Four. Realistically, the top 12 teams have the better shot.
- 1 Villanova EST
- 2 Kansas CST
- 3 UCLA PST
- 4 Gonzaga PST
- 5 Kentucky EST
- 6 Baylor CST
- 7 Creighton CST
- 7 West Virginia EST
- 9 North Carolina EST
- 10 Florida State EST
- 11 Oregon PST
- 12 Louisville EST
Top 4 teams
- EST - 1
- CST - 1
- PST - 2
Top 8 teams
- EST - 3
- CST - 3
- PST - 2
Top 12 teams
- EST - 6
- CST - 3
- PST - 3
As you can see, the more you look at the very top teams, the more unlikely that 3 EST are in the FF is. Of course the ranking will change in the next few weeks but I am not sure the top 12 will be that different other than in the relative ranking.
My point is that what we remember of Cole is him out playing Hansbrough which was great; however, outside of the time when KU was way ahead of UNC and Portland State, Cole really did not play that much or at all during crunch time during the 2008 Tournament. Yes, he came of the bench but he did it at non-crucial times and not for extended periods of time...at least this is what the numbers tell me and others might seem them differently.
I would not count on that. UK is scoring in bunches but they are doing against sub-par competition. UK has played 3 decent opponents and lost at home to UCLA, needed a 47 point performance from Monk to hold for dear life against a thin UNC team in Vegas and lost away to Louisville. The SEC is one of the weaker conferences and UK has a very good chance of going undefeated. The only tough conference games are at home against South Carolina and home and away against Florida; the rest should be relatively easy. KU has a much more difficult schedule in the Big 12 but hopefully it will prepare it better for the Tournament since it has to play every other conference team home and away. I don't believe UK will have seen anything like WVU in the SEC.
I don't believe Cole played that much in the NCAA tournament except in the UNC game where most of his play was in the first half when KU was almost 30 points up and he played only 4 minutes in the second half when UNC made a comeback.
Memphis 4 minutes (75-68 )
North Carolina 17 minutes (84-66), 13 min. FH, 4 min. SH
Davidson 5 minutes (59-57)
Villanova 3 minutes (72-57)
UNLV 3 minutes (75-56)
Portland State 10 minutes (85-61
Sometimes our memories are much better than reality or as Billy Joel would say...
You can get just so much
From a good thing
You can linger too long
In your dreams
Say goodbye to the
Oldies but goodies
Cause the good ole days weren't
Always good
And tomorrow ain't as bad as it seems
How about this tweet from Embiid...
Computer rankings are just that...RANKINGS based on performance to date. If you want prediction based on past performance, scroll to the bottom of the Sagarin rankings and you will see PREDICTIONS and they seem to be pretty damn good...
If that happens, Maxwell would have missed on a great opportunity. Does anyone know for sure why he left...or was forced out?
Did you bother to notice that once conference play started Jamari's minutes went down? Also the mpg for Perry, one of the 7 members of the rotation also went down and the mpg for the other 6 players went up. Basically, once conference play started, Coach Self tightened the rotation and relied even more on the core 6-7 than he did before. The number are there and they tell the story.
We are losing track of the gist of the discussion which was that Coach Self has relied on a 7 player core before and the current situation is nothing new...would you agree that this much is true?
Keep in mind that the legend of Shaka Smart is predicated on that one win over KU; the rest of his records is pretty much average..
A couple of thoughts. FWIW, the computer rankings seem to like WVU, As of today, Pomeroy has it as #4 and Sagarin as #2 but Massey has it as #17, a drop of 8 position due to the loss to OU. The NCAA RPI has WVU at #25 dropping only 1 spot.
Do I think WVU is one of the top 3-4 teams? No. Do I think it is #25? That is also a no; Massey has it about right at #17 after the loss where it was #9 before.
Also, I believe the projection of WVU winning the conference was done before last night's game (apparently they run 10,000 game simulations) and it was largely predicated on the pasting of top ranked Baylor, another computer favorite, and when WVU was thought to be unbeatable at home...that was before last night's game that changed things big time. If they re-run the simulation today, I will guess the results would favor KU.
We all know that KU takes everybody's best shot, particularly at AFH where every team wants to win; every other conference team has the KU game penciled in as THE game they want to win...Huggy even gets a big bonus if WVU beats KU, no other team, just KU. I bet you anything that Smart has been telling his team how they came to AFH and beat KU and ended the winning streak and how they can do it again. I am going to guess that Coach Self remembers Smart's comments about beating KU when he joined the conference and I am sure the players will get the message loud and clear, likely not directly from Coach Self but indirectly from the other coaches.
OU is playing a lot better now that Woodward is back; I did watch the entire game and without him OU does not beat WVU KSU is a good team and got a big win last night against OSU. Considering the talent they have, they are fighting well above their weight class and doing well. There are no easy games in the Big 12...WVU found this out the hard way with a loss -at home- to the current 8th team in the conference.
I would love to see KU put a beat down on Texas at AFH.
