What the H E double hockey sticks? • Jan 19, 2017 04:31 AM

I am sure the c0onference will get a strongly worded letter from Zenger on the issue with words to the effect that...if the editing is not corrected immediately he will have to take drastic measures...like blacking out more KU men's basketball games. That ought to put the fear of God into the conference.

@Crimsonorblue22

I love Arizona green tea...

@Fightsongwriter

Wrong. Only 7 players averaged in double digits MPG and Jamari averaged 9.6 mpg like I posted above; the next two guards were Anrio Adams and Evan Manning...again, like I posted above since the discussion was about "guard depth" outside the top 7 players. During conference play the main rotation players mpg increased and the bench players mpg decreased...juts like I posted...

WVU looked like a tired team. Maybe all that running all over the court like chickens with their heads cut off is starting to wear them out.

No, there was never a doubt about the guilt and he was correctly convicted. The only issue was the severity of the sentence in relation to that of his partners and I belive the 3-strile law might have had something to do with it.

OU pulls out the upset!!!! • Jan 19, 2017 03:39 AM

@kjayhawks

I agree that no system is perfect but the RPI is being used in a way in which it was not envisioned or designed for. As I mentioned before, your RPI can go up if you lose to a good team and go down if you beat a weak team; none of the other systems allow this. The systems should be used for seeding only and not necessarily prediction. I personally like Massey the best.

You can buy an entry level IBM Watson for about $50k and let it go to work; of course you would have to feed it the data, which should not be too difficult and create the analysis algorithm...that would be a little more difficult.

OU pulls out the upset!!!! • Jan 19, 2017 03:23 AM

@HawkChamp

Fortunately, the computerized systems count older loses less than recent ones. By the end of the season it should count very little. I can't wait until the NCAA does away with the RPI and implement a combination of the Sagarin-Pomeroy-Massey systems.

@ralster

Considering the KU-ISU game was the prime time game for ESPN with a national audience, you would think they would use the 2 hours allocated to the game. Other than Canadians who else would prefer to watch Ice Hockey over college BBall...it would be UN-American... :smiley:

Frank's Legacy • Jan 18, 2017 04:03 AM

@wissox

Yep. Big time Chicago Bulls fans favorite...

@Fightsongwriter

Nope, you changed the gist of the discussion to fit your argument. We were talking about guard depth beyond the current rotation of 7, not bigs, not wings but guards. I simply indicated that KU has played with shallow guard depth before and cited examples but you instead compared Teahan with Self....of course there is a world of difference between them this why Teahan was starter and Self was at the end of the bench.

...and yes, I know what you are trying to do by saying that you would play Lightfoot at guard before Self...which you and I know is just silly.

@Fightsongwriter

Except we are talking guards and Lightfoot is not a guard; he is my stated breakout player for KU but still not a guard. Vick would play guard in a pinch but he is already part of the 7 man rotation. BTW, Teahan WAS part of the 7 player rotation and not end of the bench depth.

Check out grayson • Jan 18, 2017 01:39 AM

@justanotherfan

No doubt that a small school it certainly might not get as much attention but the consequences would have likely been much direr and at a much earlier time.

Case in point, NBA players get plowed over and "T"s assessed all the time. Last night LeBron got smashed by Green and since they are both big time names playing for top teams, it was all over the news.

Frank wrecked their Prohm date • Jan 18, 2017 01:31 AM

Can someone explain this to me...when an effin' ACC goes long, they manage to get in last minute after game comments before switching to the KU game that has been underway for a while now. However, when the KU game ends a few minutes earlier than the scheduled time...no after game last words during the time still allocated to the game and they switch to ice hockey instead...I guess ESPN knows Zenger is a pushover that will not do anything about it.

@Texas-Hawk-10

In 2011-2012 the depth was freshman Nadir Tharpe and Jordan Juenemann and in 2012-2013 Anrio Adams and Evan Manning...not really that different.

@Texas-Hawk-10

Tyler Self is the new Conner Teahan...:smiley:

@drgnslayr

“anti panties” ring a bell for anyone?

Don't we call it now going commando? :smiley:

The 2011-2012 teams was basically a 7 player team, maybe 8 if you consider Wesley's 8.6 mpg and the next year was not that different with 8th player Traylor averaging 9.6 mpg. Wesley and Traylor played less during the second half of the season (conference) so both were pretty much 7 player teams. Coach Self has always indicated that by conference time he likes to have 7-8 man rotation...nothing really new.

@REHawk

Yes, Drew has been successful at recruiting but many, including the NCAA, believe he is breaking the rules and Baylor has been in trouble more than once. ↗. Also, there is talk that lot of the success is due to Drew badmouthing other coaches and programs and former Texas Coach Rick Barnes was very open about it and left no doubt on what he thought. ↗

Scrappiest guard: Mr. "floor burns" Jerrod Haase

Chalmers did not play PG at KU, he played SG. Now, Hinrich did play PG, SG and SF and I would put him up there with the best.

Gameday Thoughts • Jan 17, 2017 01:51 AM

I keep saying that KU needs to stop spotting the other team a dozen points to start the game. On the other hand, we are following an ACC game so, due to ESPN technical difficulties, we might miss that part of the game anyway.

Best prank ever...those light sticks are fitted with a clock that after 8:00 PM and during the ISU player introduction, start glowing crimson and blue and you cannot turn them off...they would never see it coming and 50 cents of Chinese electronics would do it...oh well...

Josh vs, Officiating • Jan 16, 2017 06:58 AM

@drgnslayr

The conference has 3 top tier coaches: Self, Huggins and Kruger. 2 above average and proven coaches: Weber and Dixon. 2 up an coming coaches: Underwood and Beard. 1 potentially up and coming: Prohm. 1 below average: Drew. 1 under achiever Smart.

Several thoughts • Jan 16, 2017 05:56 AM

@Texas-Hawk-10

The numbers area based on what each of us predicted you said 4-5, I said 6-7 and I though it would be fair to have a push/tie number. Let's eliminate the tie and call it 5.5; 5 or less you win, 6 or more I win.

Considering no conference has ever sent more than 70% of its teams, in our case 7 teams, realistically I only have 2 numbers, 6 and 7; you, on the other hand, have 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5, and each of those numbers has a higher probability than my numbers...fair enough?

Several thoughts • Jan 16, 2017 05:28 AM

@Texas-Hawk-10

The NCAA has indicated it uses the RPI as one of many tools to determine the tournament field; it is also on record as saying it also uses two computerized methods....Sagaring and Pomeroy. The NCAA just announced it will be reviewing the RPI and plans to implement the changes for the 2017-2018 season; it has invited two individuals to make presentations and propose changes to the RPI...do you wantv to make a guess who they invited? Jeff Sagarin and Ken Pomeroy.

The RPI was never intended to be used the way it is; in its present form, it can lower the RPI of a team for beating a team with a low RPI and increase the RPI of a team that loses to a team with high RPI. In other words, KU's RPI can go up by losing to WVU or Baylor and go down by beating Texas or Oklahoma in conference play...it does not make any sense and this is why the other systems are much better since this condition is not allowed.

I still think the conference gets in at least 6 and possibly 7 teams. Since you think it only gets 4-5, how about a little friendly wager? Let's call 5 a push, less than 5, you win, more than 5, I win...what say you?

Several thoughts • Jan 16, 2017 04:04 AM

@Texas-Hawk-10

Why do you think the Big 12 is down? The conference is as strong as it has ever been...

According to Pomeroy:

3 teams in the top 10, 4 in the top 25 including WVU at #2

8 teams or 80% of the Conference teams ranked in the top 35

According to Sagarin:

3 teams in the top 11, 4 in the top 25 including WVU at #1

8 teams or 80% of the Conference teams ranked in the top 34

According to Keneth Massey, the Big 12 is still ranked the #1 Confernced followed by the ACC.

The most recent Bracketology has the conference with 6 teams and does not even include KSU which is currently ranked #25. Other sites have the conference with 7 teams.

No other conference has the top to bottom numbers the Big 12 has.

2018 Recruiting • Jan 16, 2017 12:15 AM

@BShark

Having two players with the trajectory of Mason and Graham is an incredible luxury that very few team get, not only because of their talent but perhaps more importantly because of the length of their tenure.

@jaybate-1.0

A substantial change in weight, particularly for bigs is not unusual when they make the jump from HS to College.

In HS they eat at home, a diet that can be seriously deficient or extremely rich depending on the home environment and the trainers they have in HS are the coaches who also double as English or Math teachers. Once they hit a big time program the have access to the best coaches and strength trainers and have diets specifically designed for them by dieticians/nutritionist that specialize in athletes. Remember Alexander? He was big, flabby guy and by the end of the season he had traded that baby fat for lean muscle; same thing with Doke. Bragg on the other hand was deemed by the best trainer in the business fit to carry more weight and this is exactly what they did. I am convinced that Bragg is now at t a good weigh which I estimate to be 20-25 pound heavier and he also has grown a couple of inches. What I don't believe has happened is the corresponding mental growth to match the gain in bulk and strength. Bragg is still avoiding contact like he did when he was lighter and shorter; however, at his new size he has the height and bulk to mix it up inside and yet he does not, Eventually he will realize that he can go hard inside and he will be a different player, the one that we are all waiting for...hopefully this happens sooner rather than later.

It sure sounds like complaining to me...never mind, we have reached an impasse and we should just leave it at that.

I was laughing at that since Forte was probably on his tippy toes trying to cover his teammate's mouth. :smiley:

@jaybate-1.0

When they used dietary supplements to try to turn Withey into a 20 pound heavier banger than he was, his body appeared to rebell from the treatments. He turned yellow intermittently. And no one to this day has ever explained it. They even appeared to use stress fractures as a way of not talking about his bizarre coloration changes. Finally Pollard stepped in and said let him play skinny and block shots. Withey blossomed.

Bragg has added 40 pounds, which is a scat pot lot of weight.

Where do you get this information? KU has a certified nutritionist/dietician ↗on staff that work with Hudy in developing healthy diets for all players. I have never heard of any coloration changes in Withey. BTW, Withey came to KU at 215 pounds ↗ and left at 235. ↗

Also, Bragg gained 30 pounds not 40 and that was before the start of the season. With the heavier activity his weight gain is now probably closer to 20 than 30 and definitely not 40 pounds. I have posted before that mentally, Bragg still has not caught up with his new weight (and height) and still plays like he is 20 pound lighter and a couple of inches shorter.

Several thoughts • Jan 15, 2017 08:31 PM

@DCHawker

Again, I used the top 50 because it is more consistent than the top 25 which is way too inconsistent; when KU played Indiana it was a top 5 team and now it is not even in the top 25; the top 50 change places but don't change that much.

If you look at the resumes I posted, you could say that Baylor and maybe Villanova have better resumes but Baylor has a bad loss at WVU and by that I mean a 21 point pasting while KU's loss was a 4 point OT loss to the team that went on to be #1.. If you want to look at joke schedules, look at Gonzaga. while they have played rankled team Iowa State (2 point win) and Arizona, the rest of the team have been dogs perhaps for the last game against overrated Saint Mary's and its strength of schedule went from the mid 200's to its current 95.

My question is...with which team would you have traded schedules? Like I indicated, had Indiana not gone into the crapper, KU's SOS is in single digits and we are not even having this conversation...and it would have had nothing to do with KU doing anything different, right My point is that team's records do not depend uniquely on what they do but also on what the team they have played do and so on. All things considered I am as happy as I can be with KU's record and I know the team is not even close to having peaked and will only get better. That's all.

Several thoughts • Jan 15, 2017 06:21 PM

@DCHawker

Nothing personal but you are the stereotype of the expression...the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence.

You complain about not playing anybody but if you look at all the other teams' schedules you will find the same pattern. There is only a limited number of elite teams and they don't normally play each other in pre-season except for a limited number of tournaments. The best way to determine the toughness of schedule is to look at the record against top 50 teams and the strength of schedule. According to Sagarin who lists both, here are a few...

  • Kentucky, 3-2, 31
  • Duke, 3-4, 42
  • Villanova, 5-1, 14
  • Baylor, 7-1, 6
  • UCLA, 3-1, 78
  • West Virginia, 4-1, 145
  • Gonzaga, 4-0, 95
  • Kansas, 6-1, 26

Keep in mind that after Gonzaga win over Saint Mary's its SOS went up from the mid 200s to 95; likewise, had Indiana not lost 6 games, KU's SOS would be in the single digits. Keep in mind that all of KU's wins in conference are against top 50 teams...actually top 30s.

Obviously when taken in isolation, numbers do not look as good; however, when taken in context and compared to other top teams that you say are better, KU's numbers look pretty damn good, wouldn't you agree.

Several thoughts • Jan 15, 2017 05:32 AM

@ralster

KU is 16-1...right?

I believe that Gonzaga will be the new #1 come Monday, this should give KU a reason to destroy ISU just to make a point...at least this is how I hope it works out. I would hate for KU to be #1 and not win at Hilton.

KU' record indicates that after the very first game, it has beaten all comers big and small, that is 16 games in a row...only Gonzalo has a similar 16 game winning streak. Yes, the team is not playing as well as we would like it to but putting it down does not do any good.

Hawks vs Pokes Game Thread • Jan 15, 2017 04:02 AM

Pretty embarrassing for a program to have such an inferiority complex. The KSU AD should do something about it and if he does not, the conference should act since it also gives the conference a bad name.
