I did not indicate how you felt either, I simply wrote... If you feel the law is unfair...yada yada yada...on the other hand, if you feel the law has it right now then you are good to go. We all have options and choices.

Remeber what Gallagher used to say about living in California being like living in a bowl of granola?...the punch line is probably too politically incorrect... :smiley:

@Texas-Hawk-10

Hopefully in relation to basketball and not the drinking part...he was a repeat offender in the later.

@BeddieKU23

So...they should hold Coach Self for one year so they can make room for the two cheats?

@Crimsonorblue22

Bah Humbug...

My "joy" level is not too high at this time of the year, particularly when it gets cold.

When and where I grew up Christmas was primarily a religious, meaningful holiday; now it is a crass commercial celebration and I find it depressing.

@wrwlumpy

The movie Deliverance takes place in Georgia not Kentucky...just sayin'...

2018 Recruiting • Dec 21, 2016 08:41 PM

@BeddieKU23

I just don't see Bragg at KU as a senior. Heck, with a good showing during the upcoming "meat" portion of the schedule. i.e. conference play, he might be gone at the end of this season. I can see him coming back next season but barring something unforeseen, he is probably gone after that. Same situation with Udoka, with his current playing time, one additional off season of conditioning and improving his technique and he is probably gone after his sophomore year. Players will not stay a single day longer than they have to considering there is a potentially big paycheck waiting for them.

When it comes to felons, it varies from state to state. If you feel the law is unfair, you can always work to change it. I personally believe that while a person is serving a lawfully imposed sentence, he or she forfeits some rights as part of the penalty imposed by society. When that person has fully completed his or her sentence he or she gets those rights back.

Here's a look at which states do what, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures (Updated December 18, 2016).

States With No Ban on Felon Voting

These two states allow those convicted to felonies to vote even while they serve their terms. The voters in these states never lose their rights.

  • Maine
  • Vermont

States That Ban Felons From Voting While Incarcerated

These states strip voting rights from felons while they're serving out their terms but restore them automatically once they are out of prison.

  • Washington, D.C.
  • Hawaii
  • Illinois
  • Indiana
  • Maryland
  • Massachusetts
  • Michigan
  • Montana
  • New Hampshire
  • North Dakota
  • Ohio
  • Oregon
  • Pennsylvania
  • Rhode Island

States That Restore Voting Rights to Felons After Completion of Sentence

These states restore voting rights to those convicted of felony crimes only after they have completed their entire sentences including prison term, parole and probation, among other certain requirements.

  • Alaska
  • Arizona
  • Arkansas
  • California
  • Colorado
  • Connecticut
  • Delaware
  • Georgia
  • Idaho
  • Kansas
  • Louisiana
  • Minnesota
  • Missouri
  • Nebraska
  • Nevada
  • New Jersey
  • New Mexico
  • New York
  • North Carolina
  • Oklahoma
  • South Carolina
  • South Dakota
  • Tennessee
  • Texas
  • Utah
  • Washington
  • West Virginia
  • Wisconsin
  • Wyoming

Some of these states have instituted a waiting period of several years before felons who have completed their sentences can apply to vote again.
States Where the Governor Must Reinstate Voting Rights

In these states, voting rights are not automatically restored and, in most cases, the governor must do it on a case-by-case basis.

  • Alabama
  • Arizona (repeat offenders)
  • Florida
  • Iowa
  • Kentucky
  • Mississippi
  • Nevada
  • Virginia
  • Wyoming

Louisville/Kentucky • Dec 21, 2016 07:18 PM

@drgnslayr

Many consider Louisville to have the top defense in the country and hopefully they can somewhat neutralize UK. The question is, whether this is enough or can they score enough to win? UCLA is a scoring machine and proved too much for UK; Louisville does not have that type of scoring capability.

Nobody is forfeiting his or her vote. We all have the right to vote and have our voices heard. What I find interesting is that no one in the Democratic Party had an issue with the Electoral College when they thought Hillary was going to win in one of the largest landslides victories ever as it was universally projected/predicted when the electoral cycle started, she was after all the second coming of the anointed one and the best prepared candidate ever, and now that she lost, they are all up in arms about it. If you read about all the riots that happened after the election, they found out that 7o% of the rioters had not even voted...why did not exercise their right to vote peacefully like the rest of us?

Remember all the riots, letter writing campaigns to Electoral College voters, accusations of fraud and foreign interference and threats of impeachment when Obama won?

I don't either because it did not happen. We did not like Obama but accepted the results and moved on.

If you don't like the law, change it. The constitution clearly specifies the procedure to change it; do it before the fact and don't try to change it after the fact when it no longer fits your purposes. This is the equivalent of KU beating Duke in the Final Four and then Duke wanting the result changed because KU scored a lot of points by shooting 3 pointers that unfairly give an advantage to short players which are better shooters and unfairly disenfranchises bigs that cannot shoot from the outside. Have you ever heard a football coach claim...we had more passing and rushing yards, more tackles and more interception, we demand the result be changed so we win the game even though the other team scored more points?

The only time Hillary went to California was to raise money and I believe Trump was there maybe one time? The end goals is the electoral college and California is pretty much a given that it will go Democrat so no one bothers to campaign there .Have you ever heard of a political campaign indicating ...our objective is to win the popular vote and who cares about the electoral college? I thought that was always the case until I read that Donna Brazile, the head of the DNC, diverted $10M in the last week of the campaign to Chicago and New Orleans because she thought they could lose the popular vote there...Chicago and New Orleans? Afraid they could lose the popular vote there? Are you kidding me? ARE YOU F'ING KIDDING ME? This type of incompetence and a deeply flawed, corrupt and truly unlikable candidate with a sense of entitlement is what lost the election.

Remember the first big meeting Obama had after being elected president when he invited member of Congress to discuss his famous (or infamous) Stimulus package? When Republicans made some suggestions, some very good by by all accounts, he interrupted and said...I invited you as a courtesy but you are here to listen to what I have to say. Elections have consequences, I won you lost, deal with it. I am paraphrasing of course but the gist is correct. How things have changed and how differently some people feel when the power is on the other side.

Just too funny..... • Dec 21, 2016 06:11 PM

@justanotherfan

The Electoral College (and the Senate structure) were both created as compromises to the Rural South to keep the more populated North from outlawing slavery simply by having more population (and the political power that comes with it). Let’s remember that the South created the embarassing three fifths compromise (whereby slaves were counted as three fifths of a person for population purposes to give the South more Congressional seats and electors) to keep the slaves from being considered people while still using them for political influence.

Actually you have it backwards and this is common misunderstanding that allows a lot of people to claim that a racist congress introduced the 3/5 wording to indicate that blacks persons were worth less than white. This is the opposite of why it actually happened, the North created the 3/5 clause to give the South less Congressional seats.

At that time, and while slaves were not allowed to vote, they were still considered in the allocation of congressional districts. Had the South. which promoted slavery, had counted slaves a 1, it would have had larger population and more congressional; seats and the slavery laws would have not been repelled. By counting slaves as 3/5 of one white person, the population of the South, for congressional redistricting purposes, was reduced and did not have the votes to continue slavery that was eventually repelled by the North. The 3/5 wording was introduced as an anti-slavery measure that eventually paid off.

When I first heard of the 3/5 clause, I was also surprised until a professor friend of mine explained to me the reason 40+ years ago and since then, I have heard almost everybody, particularly race baiters such as Sharpton and Jackson and most recently the people from the BLM movement claim the racism of such a clause without knowing that they were completely wrong. Here is a good explanation of it. ↗

I know. I am curious to know what they think since MU joined the SEC and its major sports program took a dive...I think they still have a decent men's wrestling program, the sport where sweaty men in tights roll on the floor grabbing each other... :smiley_cat:

Just too funny..... • Dec 21, 2016 02:57 AM

@approxinfinity

How do you figure that? The number votes of the electoral college are based on the number of Congressional districts which are based on population plus one for every senator which was done so the smaller states would not completely disenfranchised. The Founding fathers thought that Massachusetts, New York and Pennsylvania with their large populations would dominate and the other states would have no say.

For example California has 56 congressional district with 56 congressmen plus 2 senators so it gets 58 votes; Kansas has 4 congressional districts with 4 congressman plus 2 senators for a total of 6 electoral college votes....California has just about 10 times the number of votes of Kansas. If we had a Majority Democracy instead of a Representative Republic, a few coastal states could band together and the entire central portion of the country would have no voice whatsoever. Do you really think this is what we should have?

You should read the 12th Amendment to the Constitution that outlines the Electoral College and the Federalist Papers #68 that explains in painstaking detail; the rationale behind the Electoral College.

I really should stay out of politics and restrict my comments to KU Basketball and related subjects.

Just too funny..... • Dec 21, 2016 01:02 AM

@justanotherfan

Just some interesting numbers. Clinton won California by 4,5 million votes. Without California, Trump wins the popular vote by 1.5 million votes. California with 55 electoral college votes provides 20%+ of the votes required to win the election. New York and Florida have 58 votes combined. These 3 states combined provide 41% of the votes need to win the elections; add Illinois and Pennsylvanian with 40 votes and these 5 states have 60% of the votes needed.

There are 3,144 counties (or equivalent such as parishes) in the country. Of these counties, 58 of the so called elite coastal counties or areas around big cities such as New York, Washington DC, Boston, LA, and Sacramento, have the same population as the rest of the remaining 3,086 counties in the country. BTW, Clinton won 500+ counties and Trump won 2,500+ counties

It makes you appreciate the wisdom of the founding fathers when they created a Representative Republic with an Electoral College as opposed to a Democracy, when selecting the form of government.

Just Askin.... • Dec 21, 2016 12:30 AM

Green would seem the obvious choice since at 6'-7" can match up better with our wings. Poyser would be the other player with the potential to have a career game; he is 6'-4" so one would think that KU should be able to defend him well, but then, we have had short players like Phil Forte and Keiton Paige go nuts on KU before. :smiley:

Joel Freaking Embiid • Dec 21, 2016 12:11 AM

@Lulufulu

The playoffs last season showed that LeBron is still the gold standard.

@KUSTEVE

I am not so sure it will be easy. I can see potential losses at Baylor, West Virginia, maybe OSU where KU seems to have trouble winning and they have a much improved team that just dismantled a good Wichita State team...on the road, and perhaps another game when the players don't come ready to play as it has happened in the past, although this team appears to be less susceptible to a breakdown as shown against Davidson.

Joel Freaking Embiid • Dec 21, 2016 12:01 AM

At this time, the potential for Embiid is incredibly high; however, we have yet to find out how if his body can take the abuse of playing close to 40 minutes per game for the 80+ games in the NBA season which is required of a franchise player. I might change my mind in a couple of years..

Curry would be an interesting choice but even when he is an amazing shooter and overall player, he still is somewhat of a one dimensional player. If I had to pick one player, my choice would be either LeBron, who I don't like much, or Durant who I like a lot. These two are the most complete players in the NBA...in my opinion, of course.

@KUSTEVE

Interesting. The part I don't necessarily agree is that they are 'prohibitive favorites" to win the conference. Perhaps that was true before the season started but we can see now that the conference is still the best from top top bottom and winning the Conference is not going to be easy; every team in the conference, with the exception of Texas has improved, some quite a bit. Perhaps slight favorites would be a better description.

Bill RE: Next Season • Dec 20, 2016 06:05 PM

@justanotherfan

I am curious why you would leave out the 3 years Bill Guthridge was UNC HC? He compiled an 80-28 record that tied him for most wins all-time by a coach after 3 years and he made the Final Four twice in those 3 years. A pretty damn good record if you ask me.

Duke/Tenn St • Dec 20, 2016 05:33 PM

The call was so blatantly bad and the flop so overacted that Duke and the Conference need to seriously need to take a look at both. If they don't issue some punishment then the NCAA need to get involved...this type of calls affect the integrity of the game as it reminds what happens when refs start fixing games...remember Tim Donaghy and the flack the NBA took?

Williams will not be much of an immediate loss since he did not play hardly at all and he was a player that might produce in future years. Many 7 ' players feel the should play just because of their height but many really are not Division I material.

Say what you will about Weber but he has not hesitated benching or suspending players that broke rules. I have no doubt that many if not most programs would have looked the other way to all of the shenanigans of a player with the talent of Marcus Foster but Weber did not put up with that...gotta give him credit for that. Maurice seems to be the latest player to find out the hard way; he will be missed.

Bill Self hinting at C5 again?? • Dec 19, 2016 05:48 PM

@Lulufulu

It is really simple...If it ain't broke, don't fix it and...if you can't fix it , don't break it.

Why mess with what seems to be working just fine? if it stops working, sure, work on it, but for the time being working on improving the efficiency of Lucas, Bragg and Doke would seem the best way to go about it and the one with the biggest upside.

Joel Freaking Embiid • Dec 19, 2016 05:40 PM

There is no longer a question that Embiid is indeed the best player in that team; every article on the subject pretty much confirms this. What is really satisfying is that the #3 draft pick from KU is outperforming Okafor, the #1 pick from Duke and Noel, the #1 pick for UK. Sweeeeeeeet.. :smiley:

KU vs those Wildcats from North Carolina • Dec 18, 2016 04:52 AM

A few post game observations...

Who invited Mr. Fool's Gold to this game? Kudos to whoever kicked him out at half time.

I know the program runs a big surplus...why can it use some of this money and pay the refs like everybody seems to be doing so KU does not get screwed? Zenger needs to make sure the checks clear on time instead of trying to figure out new ways to black out games for Jayhawk fans.

I wonder how Missurians feel watching the premier arena in the State sporting a gigantic Jayhawk in the center of the court and a full house...do they even have a floor with a tiger or is that too much to ask for a team that will only draft a couple of thousand fans?

Inquiring minds want to know.

No Change to the OAD rule. • Dec 16, 2016 06:30 PM

@jaybate-1.0

I agree in some and disagree on others.

The NBA introduced that rule for specific selfish reason and without any though of the effect on the individual players or college BBall It simply wanted to make sure it had a laboratory (college) where it could evaluated top players against real competition and not the weak sauce they get in HS.

Let me give you a recent example: Skal Labissiere. Had he been drafted out of HS he would have been without question the #1 pick. One year at Kentucky showed that he was overrated coming out of HS and instead he was taken with the #28 pick by the Suns and promptly traded to the Kings. This season he has played in 2 games and he has been in the D League most of the time...you can see how this rule saved a team millions and why the NBA wants this rule.

If all these institutions would really care about the students athlete, they would adopt the Baseball approach where a players can go directly from HS to the pros and have money guaranteed to go back to school and then some,if baseball does not work, ala Xavier Henry's brother, or else you go 3 years to college where many players can complete their degree or get reasonably close to one and if baseball does not work; they can always go back and within one year complete their degree. A reasonable approach one would think...

Kelly oubre • Dec 16, 2016 05:58 PM

@wissox

Why would Oubre stay at KU? He is proving that he was ready for the NBA and making more money than most of us make.

Bragg Charges Dropped • Dec 16, 2016 05:54 PM

@DoubleDD

Unfortunately...or fortunately as the case might be, just about everything that happens in a place where there are a few people, now there is always someone with a phone camera recording the event.

I went to Walmart a couple of days ago and as I was walking in there was Police officer talking to a couple by the front entrance. It appeared to be a routine conversation, they could have been friends, nevertheless there were at least a half dozen people with cell phone recording the conversation from various distances. A few days ago there was video on Facebook of two women fighting in a department store and in the video you could see dozens of people video taping the scene with their cell phones and yet no one stepped in to stop the fight. I would be surprised if there are aren't several recording of the Bragg incident that would have showed up sooner or later...probably on a tabloid.

@ParisHawk

But...it was in the Interwebs so it must be true, right?

Hmm, Joe's early Bracket • Dec 15, 2016 06:25 PM

Waaaaaaaay too early for any of this to make any sense. Once conference play starts and top teams stop playing cupcakes, the entire structure will change...of course Kentucky in the SEC will continue playing cupcakes.

BTW, Joey Brackets is at best a middle of the pack bracketologist; there are many others with much better records.
