Interesting that no questions were asked about the stupid TV "arrangement: with TWC and why he does not come to the KC Metro area much where the largest concentration of KU fans is located...inquiring minds want to know.
Let's keep in mind that the NBA does not really allow zone defense, so, if you want to get top prospects with NBA aspiration, playing a lot of zone would not be a plus...
Great minds....I thought of the Camptown Races song every time Duda was shown...
A Bolden, Herard , Lightfoot class would not only meet but exceed my current expectations.
A conservative and a liberal were walking down the street when they came to a homeless person. the conservative gave the homeless person his business card and told him to come to his office for a job. He then took $20 out of his pocket and gave it to the homeless person.
The liberal was very impressed, so when they came to another homeless person, he decided to help. He walked over to the homeless person and gave him directions to the welfare office. He then reached into the conservative‘s pocket and got out $20. He kept $15 for his administrative fees and gave the homeless person $5.00..
It kind of sums up the on-going discussion. :d
I am so happy for Hosmer...He is perhaps my favorite Royal player and had he not hit the sacrifice fly to win the game, he would have been the goat because of his error earlier. :) :) :)
There is only one thing worse than playing a 14 inning game...losing a 14 inning game. :D
This is a team of destiny...
With prospects it is all about playing time and being the star of the team. Duke has several other bigs including 7'-1" Senior Center Marshall Plumlee; GiIes and Bolden would likely be competing for the PF position...I just don't see it happening when there is available time and stardom at other schools such as KU.
Cliff made the final 15 cuts for Portland.
KU should hire the best "person" for the job regardless of color or gender, period. I am all for equal opportunity but I am not in favor of quotas. I certainly hope Coach Self hired his assistant because they were the best qualified individuals for the job and not because they were black; implying they were hired because of the color of their skin diminished their individual achievements and does them an injustice.
BTW, KU had African American coaches long before Larry Brown, as you recall, Lafayette Norwood was an assistant coach to Ted Owens in the late 1970s. Also, the women's program, has had African American coaches before, Marian Washington was head coach for 31 years and Lynette Woodward, former standout KU player was an assistant coach and interim head coach after Marian Washington retired due to heath issues. Marian Washington coached KU twice as long a ll the other coaches combined. Brandon Schneider is the first male coach (other than Naismith that coached the women's team for 8 games in 1903) of the women's team.
So much for racism and sexism.
Our package deals are more family oriented...
- Darnell Valentine and Coach Lafayette Norwood
- Danny Manning and Dad
- Mario Chalmers and Dad
- Niko Roberts and Dad
- Evan Manning and Dad
- Tyler Self and Dad
Did I miss anyone? :) :) :)
Let’s go back to arguing about how many minutes Jamari Traylor should get this year.
Now...THAT is a can of worms... :)
The twin were highly ranked out of HS but obviously way overrated and it became apparent pretty quick that they were not lottery material
Duke and KU are the top two programs with available playing time for an elite big so the most likely scenario is the one will go to Duke and the other to KU. Commitment timing will probably dictate who goes where...probably Giles to Duke and Bolden to KU.
Fox and Monk are projected lottery pick for 2017...
Giles just cancelled his visit to UNC this weekend so it looks like Duke...
The UK system is designed so OAD players can play right away, the KU system is not, plus KU will be solid at the guards position with Mason, Graham, Vick, Greene and maybe even Svi...not much immediate available playing time so it is highly unlikely that Fox and Monk come to KU
I have to say that I mostly agree with all the point @HighEliteMajor made but more importantly...where in the world did you get this figure ..."That article points out that over 16,000 commit suicide with guns each day." ? A quick calculation adds up to 5.8 million suicide per year...really?
The main argument I have is that if you implement all the gun regulation you can possible have...how are you going to prevent the individuals that does not get their guns legally in the first place from having guns, particularly when they are the main cause of gun deaths?
Do you know what percentage of all deaths happen due to gang violence in the big inner cities? If you take guns away from lawful gun owners how are you going to prevent illegal gun owners from taking from law abiding but now defenseless people with impunity? See? The problem with laws is that lawless people don't give a rat's ass about them.
You know that our "president" and HRC are now talking about Australia and England as models for future model legislation; both countries confiscated most guns from their lawful owners. I have several Australian professional acquaintances and they all agree that the Australian experiment has been a huge failure...of course you will never hear this from the main stream press.. Just sayin'...and with that, back to KU sports.
Bonnie underachieved during the season and overachieved in post-season, but not often enough...
Diallo will be fully eligible for the NBA at the end of the season....so was Mclemore after his red shirt season...worked out well for Ben to stay the extra year, even when his family had serious financial issues, and it might work well for Diallo as well, although Diallo was/is a much higher ranked player and I am not aware of any financial issues. Let's face it, for foreign players, the potential of a NCAA title does not have the same allure that it does for American players that grew up dreaming of playing for a NCAA Championship team.
By the time he signed with Appalachian State Graham was already 6'-1" and at the PG position the difference is not that big as it would be for a big. In any case, my point was that as an unknown, under the radar Graham commanded little interest but once he was noticed he asked to be released form LOI and was sought by much bigger programs than Appalachian State and Murray State. Likewise, Lightfoot has been flying under the scouts radars and once he was "discovered" and he played well in the summer camps he asked to be released form his LOI and was courted by big programs.
When the next round of HS rankings comes out around the beginning of the season, I believe that Light foot will be unanimous top 100, not only form his improved play but he will also get a "KU bump;" hopefully like Graham he will improve in his senior year and with additional exposure, he might end up top 50. Just my opinion...and hope?
I don't recall ever saying that every player that signs with KU is a future NBA player; in fact I said quite the opposite. I mentioned that Ellis, arguably one of the better recent players at KU might not even play in the NBA...right? I did indicate that Lightfoot might be the 3-4 year core type of player that has worked well for KU.
Did you not read my post? Labissiere took ALL of his classes at a regular school and ONLY played basketball for the made up school since because of his transfer he was deemed ineligible to play basketball for the school where he did his academic work.
Again, the made up school where he played basketball did not offer any classes, only a basketball team...and not very good at that. This is why he did not have NCAA problems with his academic school work.
Let's look at recent history...
Unranked 5'-11" Devonte Graham signs with Appalachian State over Murray State.
Graham now 6'-2" begins to be notice and has great senior year.
He attends Brewster prep and asks to be released from his LOI, becomes a top 50 ranked player, command attention from elite programs and eventually signs with KU.
Could we have ever imagined that Graham would turn out the way he did from the time he committed to Appalachian State? I think not.
Let's keep in mind that partly because of his early signing, junior Ligthfoot was largely unnoticed. I am confident that much like Graham senior Lightfoot will climb up the rankings now the he is known and hopefully will be a top 50 player but the end of the upcoming season.
THE END.
You get no argument from me. Bu there is no reason why even if he is not an NBA prospect that he cannot be a solid contributor. Perry Ellis might not play in the NBA but when he is done, he will be one of the better players at KU.
...but, if any of the high prospect bigs KU is pursuing feels threatened by Lightfoot...do we really want that player?
There is no way we get the 3 players you mentioned; best possible case two and more likely one. I just don't see Lightfoot as having a bearing on Bolden or Allen, maybe Herard?
KC was crazy last night. My daughter was at Johnny's and she said they doused everybody with champagne and then they had free champagne for everybody. People were there at 3:00 PM to get tables...
I see your point or point but you are also comparing the senior rankings of Dekker and Budinger and Bragg's highlights against those of junior Lightfoot. Yes, Dekker and Budinger made it to the NBA but Budinger is pretty much a role player and we have not seen what Dekker will do and both stayed 3 years in college before moving to the NBA. Would you feel better if at the end of the season Lightfoot is top 50 or higher ranked player?
I am not saying that he is or will be an NBA type talent but I see him being a solid contributor, perhaps not in his first years but in subsequent years which has been cited often in this forum as being the ideal core/foundation player.
Help me understand why your brother had to get involved with collecting paperwork? Shouldn’t your nephew had known what to expect?
You are kidding, right? Every responsible parent that I know is involved in his/her kids education and he/she is legally responsible for the kid until he turns 18 even when the kid requires very little help, particularly if he is responsible. I knew exactly what courses my kids were taking and what their grades were when they were in HS.
Every school has extensive services a to assist kids move to the next level. Student-athletes have additional resources from the AD department and coaches. The rules have been in place for a long time and in fact, they have been lessened recently, such as allowing ACT scores compensate for lower GPAs. Frankly, a high level recruit, or any student athlete for that matter, that says he does not know the rules is the equivalent of a long time smoker saying he did not know it causes cancer....it just does not pass the straight face or laugh test.
When the time came to go to college I sat down with my kids and went over the options, although both were were very well informed thought their school's guidance counselors....it is what responsible parents do.
As far as picking up a transcript from foreign school, it is not at all how you described. The transcript has to be certified in front of local Notary Public, then the signature of the notary public has to be certified by an official of the state.province/department with jurisdiction over that notary public, then that signature of that official has to certified by the country's Department of State or equivalent...then , that signature has to be verified by the American Consulate in that country and then, you finally have a valid document that meets the NCAA criteria or any other legal requirement in this country; The reverse process is also true if you want to use an American document in a foreign country...trust me, I have to go through this process 4 times per year to get documents certified and it is PITA...and sending the document via certified mail takes roughly one month to and from South America and probably longer to and from Africa.
Hopefully we will eventually find out what the snag was with Diallo's paperwork but we should not pre-emptively accuse the NCAA of incompetence when they are only doing the job they were tasked to do by the member schools. Labissiere and Diallo issues are completely different and should not be used for comparison.
In any case, it has been an interesting discussion.
You do realize that Skal is also multi lingual, right? Also, he attended a regular school for academics and the one his handler created for sports since he was not cleared to play in the regular school due to his transfer; this is why he did not have problems with his HS record and transcripts, his issue is related to his handler trying to make money off him...much like Cam Newton's father did.
Gerome Brett was checking his heart rate and pulse at the end of the game...:)
Correction.. Gerome?.It should be George not Gerome...dang auto check. :D
Why is it that the rules are not a problem for 99.99% of the student-athletes that apply for clearance and when there are problems why is the NCAA blamed? Coach Self himself has implied that there was information missing from Diallo's application ↗.
Kids that want to play Division I basketball, particularity those that are high prospects know exactly what is required, even more so the ones that attend schools designed to prepare student athletes for the next level. I have several friends whose kids were Div I prospects in different sports and I know a little about the information they needed and it was readily avail;able from the NCAA and from their own coaches and ADs at their schools. One of my nephews is on a full Lacrosse scholarship at an East Cost School (he was All-Conference last season) and I am familiar of the paperwork my brother had to help collect to submit to the NCAA to get cleared. Most every graduate from a public school or a reputable and accredited private school and with the minimum requirements sails though the process without any problem. Those who attend dubious schools or have to get overseas transcripts know that they might have problems and they need to make sure the package they submit has all the required information, if they don't, they will not get cleared until they do and they cannot really blame the NCAA for doing the job they were asked to do by the member schools. Whatever happened to personal responsibility?
As a matter of fact I do think that a 18 year old kid that has been preparing for years to move to the next level and in another year making millions of $ should know what is expected of him to get there....it is not really that complicated or rocket science. Have a minimum GPA, have a minimum ACT score, have the required core course and have valid transcript for your 4 years in HS...that is all.
All student athletes play in the Summer AAU circuit and they talk to each other and know exactly what is going on, Diallo has been in this country 3 years and should know better.
As far as Admission to KU and clearance to play basketball, these are completely different and unrelated issues. KU is free to admit any one it wants and although a HS diploma and a minimum GPA is normally required, KU can waive both requirements and admit whoever it wants, private schools have even less accountability. The NCAA rules were put in place so there is an even playing field for NCAA sponsored sports and schools freely subscribe to these rules. The NCAA cannot prevent KU or any school from admitting any student it wants but it does not have to clear him to play NCAA sponsored sports if he does not meet the rules approved by the member schools.
Again, the NCAA rules were and are drafted by committees comprised by individuals from the various member schools. If the school want different rules, they can get together and change them...its is done all the time.
I completed part my high school education in Europe and South America and I know first hand what is involved in getting overseas transcripts and documentation and you have to make sure that you do it in advance so you don't get caught like Diallo apparently did.
I read that KU played very poorly and let large leads get away....oh well, we'll get them in Lawrence; I imagine there will be a lot of interest in that game and maybe it can be moved to AFH, waive the admission fee and have a large audience.
FWIW, it is not just Fraschila, most evaluations I have read of him have him as being very athletic and with a great motors and the tape I have seen of him appear to show that much. Apparently we either watched different tapes or our concept of athleticism is quite different. Like I said, I would not be surprised if he finishes the season ranked in the top 50. I guess we will just have to agree to disagree, :(
As you all know, I am not a big baseball fan but you gotta love the Royals. What a bunch of high character players that don't know the meaning of the word quit and thus you CAN NEVER count them out. I am actually looking forward to the World Series...who knew...
I hope our boy continue to score runs with a sense of urgency and not rest on this lead...
I really don't believe there is much KU can do since all the paperwork predates KU. I am sorry, but Diallo has been in this country and has been a prospect long enough to know the paperwork required by the NCAA and if he did not have it ready or cvomplete he has no one to blame. Just my opinion.
I am sorry, I know this is frustrating but I don't understand why is the NCAA to blame. They review the information provided to them and make a determination based on it. It is the responsibility of the student to submit all the required documents; if he does not turn in a complete set or if the information is not verifiable then the NCAA requires more information and it is up to the student to make sure it get to them. Why is it that we do not commend the NCAA for the over 100,000 properly and completed submitted applications that clear every year and concentrate on one, obviously incomplete application and blame it on the NCAA? We need to assign blame on the responsible party or parties and not blindly blame the NCAA.
I used to have sign on my office door that probably applies in this case...
That is based on just one report by Yahoo Sports’s Shams Charania, all the reports quote him and no other source has verified the information. As of a one week ago, the NCCA was still investigating him... ↗
...on the other hand maybe the UK check finally cleared.. :D
At 6'-8", Perry Ellis can be and and actually is not just a serviceable PF but a very good one...at the college level; however. at the next level he would be very undersized. Many of the players that we used to think of as Centers are now PFs and the average PF is 6'-10 and 270 pounds and many are well above average 3-point shooters to booth and can extend the position outside the 3 point line. I count maybe 5 true Centers ins the NBA now. I always thought that Ellis should play SF which is what he will be playing in the NBA but his 3-point shot just statred to develop; hopefully we can see him playing that position this season although that is unlikely as KU needs him at PF.
Lightfoot has a better 3-point range than Ellis did when he came to KU so there is a good chance that he can play SF, depending on who we get playing inside...but much like Ellis, he might be force to play PF.
Miles is 32 and coming off major surgery and way past the average age of retirement in basketball. I would say his chances of playing pro ball are very small.
If he can develop into a Chase Budinger type player I would be very pleased.
He is now listed at 6'-8", 210 lbs. If he is going to switch to SF, he is close to his optimal weight; however, if he plays PF he need to gain at least 10-15 lbs.
When you zoom in it looks like a shadow,
Poor Photoshop job?
I know exactly what you are saying and I agree. I believe that Lightfoot will surprise a lot of people.; I understand he has a great motor and attitude and I believe he would do great at KU.
Fair enough but...
First, I did not compare Lightfoot to Dekker, a couple of college basketball analysts did; you would think they have more information than we do since that is their day time job. Second, Dekker was the top HS player in Wisconsin and he had the East Coast exposure that Lightfoot does not have and the ranking was after his senior year. Lightfoot is the top ranked player in Arizona and now that he has been noticed by the national media and with exposure resulting from signing with a high profile program, I believe that by the end of the season he will be at least top 50. Just my opinion and I could be wrong...
I believe that if Miles has not made it to the NBA by now, the chance are slim to none that he will do it in the future. Europe has now plenty of local talent and the opportunities are considerable less than were 10 years ago, Unless you are a big name, the "working conditions" for journeymen basketball players in Europe are not very good (read former ISU player Paul Shirley's writings on the subject) and the last place left is China, where the conditions are even worse.
Miles future is likely coaching basketball and KU is the ideal place to get started, Yes, it could take a few yeas to learn the ins and out of the trade but eventually he can end up with a decent career as a coach. I don't think Miles will be leaving anytime soon.
Have you seen the videos on Lightfoot? He has some very great dunks and rebounds and all evaluations I have seen consider him to be an "elite athlete" with a high level motor athlete. This is what Fraschilla said about him: ↗
“If Mitch were to have a Sam Dekker college career, I think he would be very happy with that,” Fraschilla said. “Sam is a little bigger, Mitch might be a little more explosive, but I think being compared to Dekker is just a testament to what people think about Mitch.
"I told him to continue to work on his ball handling and his ability to play away from the basket so he doesn’t get locked into one spot. I think at the college level he’s going to be a small forward; his athleticism is off the charts.”
I would like to see where you got the information that he is "marginally athletic."
