Shaka Smart in BigXII • Apr 05, 2015 06:26 PM

@ralster

I believe you post is spot on.

Smart has milked that magical run for all it is worth and he has not shown that he can duplicate it, even in his own not-so-major conference. His frantic style of play has won the tournament only once (Arkansas) a long time ago when it was so new that coaches did not know what to expect and after that it has not done much of anything...ask Mike Anderson how it has worked out for him.

Marshal would have been a much better choice but he has one year left of really good playersat WSU and he probably saw that Texas will never support BBall the way the do FBall, as shown by all those empty seat even when KU comes to town; in some games, the arena is not even one third filled. Also, I believe the current arena is scheduled to be torn down and a new one built so the next year or two they might be playing in make shift location which not conductive to recruiting or getting fan interest. Marshall is aiming for big name BBall program.

Uncommited recruits... • Apr 05, 2015 06:06 PM

@truehawk93

I am not sure the twins leave, they are now projected second round. Town is top 3 so he is gone and so is Booker who I believe is the best player in that team, Cauley-Stein is a projected lottery pick and his stock is not going to get any better so he is gone as well; Lyles is likely going and probably Johnson as well. So there are at least 4 players leaving and as many as 7 could declare. Just my take.

@jaybate-1.0

The difference with the Zapruder film is that it was a grainy 8mm film taken from (relatively) far away, while yesterday they had dozens of high resolution takes from every possible angle...how that was not a flagrant foul escapes me, all I can think is that the refs got word that the checks from UK had cleared. :)

On a separate note, the ugly-arse Adidas unis march on to the finals.

To add to @icthawkfan316 comments I know several kids that went to school with him and the consensus was that he was real d-bag in school and he would have been locker room cancer at most schools that were not choke full of better/higher rated players like UK. Having said that, he turned out to be a pretty good defensive player, although it took some time, but I still don't believe he would have been a good fit and he really had no interest coming to KU.

I believe every College BBall fan that appreciates the sport and sees the damage that the squid and his OAD system has done, really enjoyed the Wisconsin win; I know I did.

Do we really want Zim? • Apr 05, 2015 05:29 PM

@dylans

One bad experience should not biased you against an entire city. I am sure most if not all of us have had bad experiences in different towns/cities all over and yet we don't hold it against the small cities. At one time (maybe this is till the case), every small town in Kansas used to be a speed trap with speed signs a the edge of towns conveniently placed behind trees or tall bushes and before you know you had flashing lights behind you; St. Mary's between Topeka and Manhattan was know for this...a bad experience every time and yet I do not hold a broke Police Department against the towns themselves.
The KC metro area seems to be in most every list as one the best cities to live and work and yet I would not even drive on the East side/inner KC MO after dark and the reputation of the entire Metro area is based in great part to the Kansas side of the area. Likewise, Wichita, like every other city, has its bad side but overall it is a pretty decent city.

I love KU basketball • Mar 23, 2015 04:44 PM

@Lulufulu

Depending on who goes and who stays, WSU might have 1 more year of top-shelf basketball left but after that they will go into another 20 years of futility. I believe that Marshall will not stay past next year and will strike will the iron is hot. You heard it here first.

@Blown

I believe you have it exactly right. I watched the game with an eclectic group of friends including my son-in-law that is a MU fan and everybody, without exception though the refereeing at the beginning of the game was heavily pro-WSU and it did set the tone for the game as it took the aggressiveness out of KU players. I am not going to say the refs cost KU the game, but there is no doubt that the early calls changed the flow of the game. The non-call on the flagrant was huge call since it sent a message that WSU could play aggressive and also sent Perry to the dressing room for several minutes. Just my opinion.

Nike Stinking Up The Place! • Mar 23, 2015 04:27 PM

@BeddieKU23

The NBA contract is money loser for Adidas. Apparel brand in the NBA does not have the appeal that it has in College sports; the previous contract was with Reebok that was acquired by Adidas. How many people actually know that Adidas has the contract with the NBA? not many; on the other hand, most people know the Nike and the Adidas schools. Currently Adidas pays the NBA roughly $40M per year and the number is likely to be much higher on the new contract; with that money, Adidas can get at least 10-15 additional major programs...looks like no brainer to me, particularly when you consider that the real money maker, shoes, are not part of the deal and NBA players have their own endorsement contract and war whatever shoe they want.

@drgnslayr

OU will have to play better than it did most of yesterday's game with Dayton. They only pulled away in the last couple of minutes of the game when Dayton finally ran out of gas after playing 6 games in 10 days and only playing 7 players, none taller than 6'-6". OU should have dominated inside against a much shorter team and yet it did not. In all fairness, Dayton is a very well coached team and the players are hard working and overachievers that do not give up.

Big 12 schedule Sunday • Mar 22, 2015 06:31 PM

@wissoxfan83

It really is what you are used to. When I lived on the East Coast that was the norm and when I moved to the Mid West everything thing seemed to be too early until I got use d to it,

@truehawk93

They got some key calls from the refs at critical times. When Virginia was about to catch up, trapped the MSU player that lost control of the ball and while the ball was bouncing and no team had possession, they awarded a time out to MSU and saved the possession. After that they sent the best MSU free throw shooter to the line on a ticky-tack call and compensated at the other end by sending UVa's worst free throw shooter to the line, Maybe, because of all of the TV angles now available we are becoming more aware of all the bad calls that go on during games...or refs are getting worse.

Big 12 schedule Sunday • Mar 22, 2015 06:21 PM

The NCAA awards the broadcasting rights to whoever bids the highest. CBS/TNT/TBS/TrueTV have the rights now and I am sure they dictate times based on their own demographics and premiership. BTW, while prime time on Central time is 7-10 on the East Coast is 8-11.

Fool's Gold - Who Knew? • Mar 22, 2015 05:34 PM

@HighEliteMajor

Well...you and I are going to disagree on this issue and we can both cite all kinds of statistics to justify our views but as Will Rogers famously said...there are lies, damn lies and statistics, so that is a no go.

On the other hand it is hard to argue with Coach Self's success...and in spite of you saying all season long that he is doing it all wrong, most unbiased analyst called it his best coaching job ever, and in the words of the younger generation...HE"S GOT SCOREBOARD!!!

Probably all of the above. Like any other program WSU has all different types of fans, some are knowledgeable and reasonable and some ignorant and obnoxious...

Did you know that in many states, the Court stenographer is the owner of the Legal proceedings transcripts and not the Court? ...and, if you want to get a copy of a transcript, you have to pay the Court Stenographer and not the Court? The Stenographer's Union in California is quite powerful...who knew...

Fool's Gold - Who Knew? • Mar 22, 2015 05:16 PM

Coach Self has always indicated that the best way to start on offense is with great defense, A good defensive stand will result in either a bad shot or turnover by the opposing team or a steal and a break away basket; the '08 team was particularly good at that.

As far as the 3s KU has proven that while good it is really not great at shooting them. It had some outstanding games but also some in which it did not score at all from the 3, in statistics it is called reverting/regresing to the mean. The idea is to find the sweet spot where you shoot at or above your average without getting to the point of diminishing results; it is also nice to know that if your 3s are not falling (we know this all too well) you have an inside game or penetration that can get you points and keep you in the game. Like all things in life, BALANCE tends to be the best approach. I believe this is what Coach Self has been trying to do all along and another Conference Title and a Coach of the Year award later, he seem to have been on the right track all along for the available personnel, which goes to show that he really knows more than we do....:)

A win by WVU helps KU more than win by Maryland (conference prestige) so I will root for Huggy and the Mountaineers.

They are a double "B" team...Butler Bulldogs and as such, the kiss of death for KU. Luckily we don't have to worry about this year since Notre dame won. :)

Baker is more than just a pure shooter, he is also a good defender/rebounder, can create his own shot and drive to the basket. Green might have more upside, if he ever develops the rest of his game, but at this point Baker is the better player. Given the choice, I would start Baker over Greene any day.

WICHITA STATE SHOCKERS • Mar 22, 2015 01:57 AM

@HighEliteMajor

I really don't think is fair to name Overland Park or Olathe without mentioning the KC Metro area, of which they are an integral part. There are many areas in the KC Metro area that I just would not go after dark or even before dark unless I have Police escort. By the way, the crime rate in some areas in West Olathe is starting to go up since it has become a stopover in the drug traffic from Mexico; nothing huge, mind you, but it could get worse.

Compared to Kansas at large just about every city is going to have a much higher crime rate since it is low crime rate state; however, if you compare Wichita to other comparable cities on both coast or other urban areas, I bet the crime rate would be substantially lower.

I am not saying that Wichita is a great city but it is not as bad as it seems some people think it is.

KU - 4th game in 10 days.

WSU - 2nd game in 15 days.

Dayton finished 2nd in regular conference (Davidson was first) and lost in the Tournament title game to VCU who ended up seeded 7. Dayton was projected as a #7-#8 seed in all pre-selection brackets and instead got a #11 seed and had to play in a play-in game which really should have not had to play...If you consider being underseeded and having to go though a playing game getting a break....then I don't know what to say to that...of course I am a little biased, but just a little. :)

I have family on the East Coast Washington DC area ( I used to live there) and Florida and I get there at least once a year, went to undergrad school in Ohio and because of work, I traveled to California almost every other week, I was in the LA area two weeks ago, I also periodically get to Chicago in the North and Dallas and Houston in the South.

FWIW, here is Facebook map that shows the states I have been in...and yes, I have traveled quite a bit and am very familiar with a lot of cities in the country...I have even been to North Dakota 3 times in the last 6 months alone
