Devonte played well and was very unselfish passing on shots and deferring to other players; he was often open but he did not get the ball and other players kept driving to the hoop and taken poor shoots instead of passing the ball.
Lots of free agents in the 2019 off season and teams are now starting to clear cap space in anticipation. The Lakers signed several players to one year contracts preparing for big changes after the season. LeBron likes to have control, and he will have a say on who the Lakers get, much like he did in Miami and Cleveland.
I see “Self” is mentioned twice...oh wait....never mind...
It's got to be the heat, hottest is has been around here in a while and no rain. Finally decided to let grass go dormant, no sense in spendig hundreds in water bills every month.
I was referring to @approxinfinity post.
In all fairness, @KUin LA dd not ask to replace Coach Self with Turgeon, he simply stated that he hoped the "next" coach is Turgeon...at least this is how I read it.

@JayHawkFanToo I can tell that I know more about the NBA than you.
Funny, you don’t seem to know who or how good Hayward and Kyrie are...and even funnier, you think the Lakers will beat the Warriors and Rockets to make it to the finals...so much about knowing more about the NBA.
I find it hard to believe that if you take not 1 but 2, not journeymen players but All-Stars and ranked in the top 20 players in the entire league and the 2 top players from a team, any team, and it would remain at the same level. Take Graham and Newman or Svi from last year’s KU team or Mason and Graham from the previous year’s team and do you think KU is still at the same level? Definitely not.
It appears that Maryland is the one in the cross hairs rather than KU.
Wow...you are kidding, right? Hayward was a finalist for the USA and Olympic teams and an All-Star that averaged 35 mpg and 22 ppg the previous season and was ranked in the top 20 players in the NBA going into the season and Kyrie is one of the top PGs in the League, an All-Star and USA team member and top 20-25 ranked player and you don’t think they would have made a difference? Either you are not familiar with NBA players or just too much of a LeBron fan and blinded to anything else.
Again, your logic does not add up. Ever since LeBron went to Miami he made sure he would have the handpicked best team in the Eastern Conference and he did the same thing when he moved back to Cleveland where he had an almost All-Star team and this is why he ended up in 8 finals and even then, if the Celtics did not have its two top players injured they beat Cleveland in 5 games considering that without its top two players the series went the full 7 games.
With the “current” Laker team no way he makes it to the finals the upcoming season since it means the Lakers would have to beat the Rockets and the Warriors and that just will not happen with their current personnel...including LeBron. After next season, when a number of free agents are available and the Lakers have a large cap and get 2 or 3 top players to go along with James then it will have a better chance.
Actually KU could be the ideal situation for a capable and self confident coach since he would be getting basically a blank canvas that he can build it into any thing he wants and even sweeter if he can do it in his home state. Look at what Snyder did at KSU, he inherited the worst program in Division I and built it into a very good program.
Venables played and coached under Snyder and has that role model to follow and so far he has been a winner everywhere he has coached. Given time and resources he could make KU into a consistent winner...no reason why KU could not be a football power.
I would like Venables. He is from Kansas although he attended KSU but he has been successful everywhere he has coached and has National titles at OU and Clemson. Definitely a home run hire.
Time to turn it down several notches. Let's agree to disagree and keep it civil without the name calling; we are all Jayhawk fans first and we need to keep this board viable or we will end up at the JW site.
There is no way KU is asked to forfeit any games. If it is, programs like Louisville, Arizona and yes, North Carolina, should get the death penalty and this is just not happening.
It appears the NCAA is waiting for the FBI to do the dirty work before becoming involved and we have not heard a peep from the FBI in a while now and we might not for a long time. It would not surprise me if the entire probe is quietly dropped and the NCAA declares a one time general amnesty with tougher rules and penalties moving forward.
Thanks for the information and context; it makes a lot more sense now.
I agree, recruiting coach speak paraphrased by his HS coach and as far as I can tell not directly by Self. Technically, any player can play any position and in HS is not rare to see a 6'4" player playing Center and a 6'9" player bringing the ball up the court; the better players are also great athletes and so much better than the often weak HS competition that literally can play any position they want somewhat competently.
College is quite different, the competition level is considerably higher and players quickly learn they have a natural position which they will likely play and sometimes, they will play a position different than their natural one if lack of personnel dictates they do and when they do they are often at a disadvantage with opponents playing their natural positions.
If Vick was ever going to play PG, last season would have been his best chance since KU was sorely short at that position, instead, Coach Self decide to ride Graham like a rented mule and played him close to 40 minutes a game with Svi and Newman and occasionally Garret spelling him but I did not see Vick play PG at all.
KU has Moore and Dotson firmly entrenched as PGs and Grimes being next after showing in the FIBA under 18 tournament he could run a team, next candidate would be Garret who actually played PG in HS and after that KJ who has indicated that he is not a big but a big guard that can play and defend positions 1-4. I just don't see a scenario where Vick would play PG at KU, none whatsoever...wishful thinking notwithstanding. If he did not play PG last season there is no way he plays PG this season.
Converse, now a division of Nike, still makes the versions of the original Chuck Taylor high tops including a somewhat high tech version of it.
Selden has already started games for the Grizzlies and has a contract in place so he is just playing to get back in shape after injuries.
Mason is playing SG with Fox who is playing PG when they are together. I am probably biased but I believe Mason has outplayed Fox so far.
Other KU players to watch are Ellis with the Bucks, Jackson with the Suns and Doyle with the Nets.
I really don't place much importance to it at this time. Lots of schools recruited Grimes and Dotson harder than KU and they ended up here anyway, KU recruited Langford very hard and he ended up at Indiana, Maryland went all in on De Sousa and even Under Armour kicked in money and he ended up at KU. As long as players feel they are recruited decently they will go where they want to go anyway. Elite programs like UK, Duke, KU and others do not need to recruit nearly as hard as the smaller programs and get the players anyway. Here is the link to the article itself. ↗

@KUSTEVE My opinion isn't based solely on last season, but it is a factor in my opinion. Kentucky has lost double digit games in 3 of the last 6 seasons so the flat out say they'll be a top 10 team when KU comes to town is not a foregone conclusion.
If they play to their talent level, they should be a top 5 team, but there's enough recent history to suggest they don't do that all the time anymore.
...and KU lost last season back to back games to Washington at the Sprint Center by 9 and to Arizona State by 10 at home, and then by 12 to TTU at home, by 16 at Baylor and by 18 at OSU ...that is 4 games by double digits and it still ended up a #1 seed. So you can say that KU also loses multiple games by double digits. The days of a team going undefeated are gone and any team can lose to any other team by double digits...UVA, the overall #1 seed lost to #16 seed UMBC by 20...
That logic is flawed. What you are saying is that as long as LeBron is in one team, that team will make the finals regardless of how good or bad the teams is? It makes no sense. Teams with LeBron have made it to the finals because they are better than the opponents, in great part but not uniquely because LeBron is in the team but better nonetheless. Same with KU, it has continued to win because the teams for the last 14 years have been better than the competition and not just because it is KU. Last season, had KU lost Graham and another top player, say Newman, Svi or Doke, do you think it wins the conference? Likely not. If your premise is correct then the Lakers should make it to the finals, even if they don’t add anyone else, solely because they have LeBron? There is no way they make it past the Warriors...or Houston...or even OKC so they will not make it to the finals. No way.
The Cleveland-Boston series went 7 games and Boston had its two top players injured and did not play; with both playing Boston wins that series.
I thought KU handled Travis just fine but most every sports analyst out there believes he was the piece UK needed ↗ to become the top team. UK has way too much talent and enough experience to fall off the top 10.

Considering that LeBron signed a “lifetime” contract with Nike in 2016 considered to be the biggest ever awarded by Nike and worth over $1B, the answer is no...and you can do your own research.
————————-
You aren’t serious about the lifetime contract being an impediment, are you?
You don’t seriously think $1B is a ceiling, do you?
Considering LeBron has the biggest endorsement contract ever and Nike is about 10 times the size of Puma, yes. If you think otherwise you are seriously delusional.
???
Since Travis joined UK, it is now the unanimous pre-season #1 and you think it will not be a top 10 when it plays KU?
You are correct. He had 29 points but 19 of those came from the FT line and Doke played only 11 minutes, Bragg 16 and Lucas 18. Last season Doke went to town on him and scored 24 points on 12 of 15 shooting including 7 dunks.
I don’t agree that KU is supposed to win all games by a wide margin, even on paper. While KU should be favorite for most, for several others such as Kentucky, MSU, Tennessee, ASU and a couple of conference games like at KSU and WVU, KU will likely be the underdog or the game a toss up.
A healthful thanks to the people that make it possible for our country to still be, despite all the criticism, the shinning light for the rest of the world. We are the land of the free because of the brave.

You are forgetting that Jaybate never lets the facts get in the way of his fantasyland stories.
Svi played on Tuesday and had a decent game; he is second in scoring for the Lakers. Selden had a very nice game and ended up with 20 points and led the Grizzlies to a close win over Utah.
Svi, Mason and Selden are all either 1 or 2 in scoring for their teams. Newman has not played because he has already a two way contract and is not really playing for a roster spot. Preston, Graham and Jackson will be playing in the Vegas League starting in a few days. Here is the complete schedule. ↗
Wizards just signed Howard, team chemistry will likely suffer. I am not sure if and how it will affect Markieff.
Mason had another good game against the Warriors but Sacramento lost big. Bagley was unimpressive. Selden and Svi also having good games.
I heard Trae Young had a really bad outing, 0-9 from the field and 0-6 from the three with the first two shots being air balls...in the first half alone...
Coach Self seems to like Garret, particularly the way he plays defense. He will get decent minutes.
I will guess that KU loses at most 2 games in pre conference and 2-3 at most in conference. Too much parity in college basketball to go undefeated but if a team can do it, this team would be a strong candidate.
Agbaji indicated he had no problem red shirting since he will in all likelihood be a 4 year player and an extra year gives him a chance to possibly get a Masters as well...all paid for...
LeBron had the better teams in the past so it always advanced. Kyrie and Hayward were arguably the two top players for the Celtics and with them playing they beat the Cavs in 5 games.
If the Celtic had Kyrie and Hayward they would have likely beaten the Cavaliers. If they add a player like Kawhi they would be the best in the East and a true contender, certainly ahead of the Sixers.
Lots of players could play PG but they don’t. Garret actually played PG in HS and was POY in Texas playing at that position and did not play PG at KU; I can see him playing PG before Vick. If Vick plays PG at KU, the team is in serious trouble.
Sure the Sixers can challenge but they are a couple of players away from being a real contender; signing Kawhi would narrow the gap. Keep in mind that Boston almost made the Finals and they will have Hayward and Kyrie back who did not play in the playoffs.
Cousins was a great player but he will not be that good again after his surgery. I just read an article about athletes that underwent the same surgery and only a handfull came back to no more than 70-80% of their previous condition and the author could not find one big man that did. Apparently the Pelicans were not confident he would either and did not mKe an offer or would not even match the low ball offer from the Warriors. He is not expected to play until close to the end of the year and really does not add much to the Warriors other than his ability to overpower players which he might no longer have and passing from the post. A one year gamble at best.
Cousins indicated he had no offers and instructed his agent to call teams until he found the Warriors. When he had his head in the game he was an All-Star but he also led the League in technical fouls and he was the proverbial cancer in the locker room. A lot of talent but not enough discipline.
Here are the latest related NBA news. Lakers renounced the rights to Randle and he was promptly picked up by the Pelicans. The Warriors pick up Boogie for just $5.3M on a 1 year contract. Boogie has always been a very talented player but a problematic one and many teams had a no Boogie policy plus he is coming off Achilles heel surgery, one of the worst for athletes and the history of players coming back from it, even to an 70-80% of their previous form is thin And even thinner for big players; he could be a steal or a waste of money but, at least on paper, he fills a void the Warriors had against teams like the Rockets. He could have gotten more elsewhere even with the mid level exception but maybe he sees the writing on the swallow and wants to win one title before boogin’ out.
The Lakers signed mercurial PG Rajon Rondo to a 1 year deal. Several Laker players are now on 1 year deals and the team is getting ready for a big 2019 off season when it can shed all these 1year deals and sign the players it needs to complement LeBron...or the players he picks, depending on how you see it. Lots of big names becoming free agent in 2019 and there will be a lot of players changing teams and large changes in the League.
Interesting story. I really like the West Coast and at one time I used to be there for business almost two weeks out of every month. I have also been on vacation there many times but as much as I like it, it is not a place where I would like to live.
Don’t wait too long to travel, before you know another 30 years will have gone by so do it while you are young and can enjoy the beautiful places all over the country...or the world, for that matter.
The moment LeBron bought a second mansion in LA last December the writing was on the wall that he would end up with the Lakers. He wants the biggest stage to finish his career and wants to be a big shot in the entertainment business after his playing days are over and no place matches LA for that. At this time Puma has signed two (* Edit - make that four) athletes that have yet to play a minute in the NBA and they are nothing for Nike to worry about. James move to LA and Puma trying to get into basketball are completely unrelated.
As a matter of fact is is not a solid question. Nike has the NBA contract (took over Adidas who wanted out) and provides uniforms to all teams for the next 8 years. Teams can have individual sponsors and they are allowed to have a 2.5”x2.5” patch on the upper left portion as several teams do; however, Nike competitors are not allowed to sponsor/advertise. Individual players are free to sign with any shoeco they want and LeBron has a “lifetime” contract with Nike so no, he will not be changing sponsors...he really can’t. Anyone that follows the NBA knows this.
As far as my surly comment, you must not have been reading posts lately otherwise you would understand the comment.
The only time KU played UCLA in the 90s was in 1995 at the Aloha Bowl and KU won 51-30. Largest margin of victory in the series was 32-7 by UCLA in 1954. Here is the complete record ↗. UCLA won in 2001 41-17 in Lawrence and this might be the game you remembered but by no means one of the worse games by KU as we know all too well...and yes, Terry Allen was the coach.
That is the contract with IMG that markets the KU brand and includes stadium and arena signage and licensing of merchandise. You will not find anywhere a cost for the agreement with Metro Sports because it was structured as a “partnership” with the payment being production and streaming of sports programming in lieu of actual money.
Belgium pulls a miracle and wins 3-2.
