@Barney

...and he took a bunch of valuable of time off the clock with WVU players chasing him.

Azubuike Manned Up • Jan 16, 2018 06:53 PM

It has been a joy to watch him develop every game in front of our own eyes. He seems to get better every game and last night might have been his best game to date. No doubt he still gets caught out of position but he is improving and he is nowhere near his ceiling.

@Apologist

Bingo. Huggins commented on how they could not handle all the switching by KU.

@HighEliteMajor

Absolutely and it makes the team less predictable and harder to plan a defense like Washington, Arizona State and Tech. did.

Dang...and I though the title was about how big they both looked with those silly tops.:smile:

@mayjay

Gotta give it to him, the man has a knack for the obvious. :smirk:

@BeddieKU23

I noticed KU is driving a lot more than it did before and not relying on the 3 as much; only 23 attempts from the 3 last night.

@wrwlumpy

UTTERLY GUTTY HAND TO HAND!!! • Jan 16, 2018 05:48 PM

@approxinfinity

Rankings are mostly for fans. Coaches do not like all the scrutiny and attention that comes with it; they would be perfectly happy flying under the radar and not getting a bull’s eye on them. KU is used to it but apparently WVU not so much.

KU had 7 TOs in the first 7 minutes of the game and 6 the rest of the way (33 minutes).

Sam Cunliffe: MIA • Jan 16, 2018 05:32 AM

Coach Self has always said he likes an 8 man rotation by the time Conference play comes along. There is a bigger need for a big so De Sousa is in and Cunliffe out.

On other KU related news, Embiid had a 34-11 line against the Raptors including running the full court to block a short jumper by Fred VanVleet.

@Fightsongwriter

Spotrs Center showed all the blocks and ensuing taunting...and not a technical called on him.

UTTERLY GUTTY HAND TO HAND!!! • Jan 16, 2018 05:16 AM

@BShark

I think Devonte rattled him, he seemed to lose confidence after Devonte stripped the ball and completed the 3 point play and drew the foul on him. He was not the same after that.

Don’t forget, KU never loses, occasionally runs out of time.:smiley:

KU outscored WVU 40-21 in the last 16 minutes of the second half.

That's a tough team • Jan 16, 2018 04:30 AM

This might end up being the turning point of the season when the team finally found its groove.

That's a tough team • Jan 16, 2018 04:23 AM

Good production from the bench, 17 points, 11 rebounds, 3 steals, 2 assists and 3 fouls from Vick, Lightfoot and De Sousa...and 54 minutes.

Took the bully’s best punch and bloodied him right back. Most satisfying win since coming back from 14 and beating them in Lawrence 3 years ago.

@Crimsonorblue22

I was referring to KU being back in charge of the conference.

Hello boys...guess who’s baaaaack...

Holy shit...what a win...

Bilas said it looked like a rebound not a foul....

@Hawk8086

They got away with those before...

Big MO has slang to KU

@truehawk93

Hope springs eternal...

Or if get get decent refs...

@Crimsonorblue22

Dang, there goes our 3 point threat. :smiley:

How is thT a foul on Doke? That was a text book over the back.

Game is unwatchable; not the way college basketball should be played.

Only 6 fouls on WVU...UNBELIEVABLE!!!

De Sousa...

Between all the blocks by WVU, all the turnovers by KU and refs I am surprised this is not a 20 point game.

@Crimsonorblue22

The Huggy should have a few for staring down the refs.

What exactly did Doke do? Screen froze for a few seconds after the dunk and I missed whatever he was supposed to have done.

Getting jobbed by the refs early an often...

@Crimsonorblue22

I don’t believe I have ever seen Coach Self without a tie, other than at the resort tournaments.

For once the previous game finishes on time and now the talking heads are yanking it up instead of switching to the KU game. For once I would like to see player introductions...

@Kcmatt7

The refs have allowed WVU to foul with impunity all season, no reason to think they will call it any differently tonight.

Big 12 up! • Jan 16, 2018 01:48 AM

Butler went to the Championship game both in 2010 and 2011 after being eliminated in the first round in 2009 and then missed the dance all together in 2012.

Very few teams have all players returning from year to year so teams can be vastly different from year to year.

Most Improved player this year? • Jan 15, 2018 10:45 PM

What @HighEliteMajor said and Udoka is not even close to his ceiling. Once he learns the basics of getting himself in position at both end of the court he will be a beast.

@HighEliteMajor

I believe that is what I meant. If you break the press quick with one or two passes you will have a mismatch at the other end resulting in relatively easy baskets. Now, if KU can do it consistently, then WVU woul have to step back and its pressing advantage is greatly abated.

Remember KU playing against UAB coached by Anderson who had just upset Kentucky with the 40 minutes of hell gimmick (full court press) at the 2004 NCAA? Miles and Langford consistently broke the full court press and Simien had a fiel day scoring 30 points including 18-20 from the FT. KU won easily 100-74. Granted WVU is a much better and more complete team but when you rely on something so heavily like WVU does on the press it can come back to bite you.

KU should be playing more relaxed now. It has more players available, although the real impact is probably negligible, but pretty much everybody penciled this game as a loss anyway, so it is really playing with house money, like someone mentioned.

@mayjay

The Big 12 could have sent a loud message but intstead it punted and set a very bad precedent instead.

@FarmerJayhawk

So, you are in effect saying that a scholarship is a right that should not be taken away and not a privilege? I bet every single student that attends school without a scholarship disagrees with you.

WVU player punches TT fan • Jan 15, 2018 07:43 PM

The Big 12 reprimand is a joke. Any thing less than a 3 game suspension for Harris and 1 game suspension for the two other players that left the sidelines to shove players amounts to less than a slap on the wrist.

Players are given a technical just for leaving the bench (Alabama finished a game with just 3 players because of this) but now they can leave the sidelines (albeit after the game) with inpunity and shove fans with no consequences. If the program has any integrity it should sit all 3 players but I don’t believe it will.

@HighEliteMajor

In a perfect world that would be ideal. A quick break of the full court press usually results in easy point at the other end. If KU can do it consistently then Huggy will have to call the dogs off and lose its advantage or risk giving up easy point.

Having said that...No battle plan survives contact with the enemy - Colin Powell (Helmuth von Moltke had the original and longer quote)

@FarmerJayhawk

A couples points, TTBOMK, most transfer happen not because a student athlete losing his scholarship but because of wanting more playing time or playing for a better program.

Also, what makes you claim a student athlete cannot transfer at any time if he so desires? He can, just like any other student and start anew somewhere else, just like any other student. The only restriction is that he has to sit one year before he can play sports again, something he knew going in and something that he is not required to do to complete a college education...you know, the thing people go to college for...

@mayjay

Unless the rules have changed dramatically recently I don’t believe this is the case. From one of the links you provided:

“ In addition to specific course and scholastic average requirements, each candidate for a bachelor's degree from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign must earn at least 60 semester hours of Illinois credit, of which as least 21 hours must be 300- or 400-level courses at this campus (Student Code Art 3-801). Consult your admissions/records officer in LAS Student Academic Affairs with questions.
If you complete your last semester or year at another institution, including study abroad, but wish to receive a degree from this university, you may encounter delays in graduating if other schools do not send transcripts in time.”

BTW, in residence was meant to indicate as “earning credits” from one institution. I can see where minor schools might take more transfer credits from a major school but the reverse is not true, otherwise you would see juniors from small schools transferring for the senior year to a more prestigious school and getting a degree from there; they might do that but the degree will be awarded by the school where most of the work (60 credits) was done. Say, if a junior from Emporia State transfers to KU and completes the last 30 credits at KU, the KU credits would be transferred to Emporia State who would grant the degree and not KU. To get a degree from KU an additional 30 credits would be required. It makes sense.

The entire concept was based to allow JuCo students to transfer after 2 years and having them do 2 years at the larger institution which translates to at least 60 credits.

You can see where unrestricted transfer could result on a student athlete having 130+ credits but not enough from any one school to get a degree. Basically, they become guns for hire or ringers rather than student athletes. I have no problem with the system the way it is. Student athletes should not have any less rights than the average college athlete but they shoul not have more either.

To equate coaches being able to move when athletes have restrictions is beyond silly. A coach is working a job and not attending school and has a binding contract that he also has to follow. A student athlete is “supposed” to be in school with the goal of getting a degree which most do anyway. Allowing unlimited transfers would defeat the concept of the student athlete since most every school requires at least half the credits or 2 years in residence in order to get a degree. Unrestricted transfers would result in students with credits from several schools and a degree from none.

If this is the case might as well declare the teams professional, pay the players and drop the pretense that top prospects actually go to college to learn anything other than the fastest road to the pros. The current setup does not appear to prevent student athletes from transferring anyway; according to the NCAA ↗, 40% of students that enter Division 1 from HS transfer by the end of their sophomore year...coaches do not transfer nearly as much.

If the conference does not suspend the players before the game the school should. Somehow I don’t think that is happening.
