The more important question is...is Newman NBA material now? Will one additional year at at KU make him NBA material?
Based on what I have seen to date my answer would be no and no but I would love to be wrong on this one.

If I remember correctly, didn't the players themselves chose Lucas over Diallo?
Interesting, the article is 6 years old.
Exactly. Konate was showing off and taunting after every block and not a T was called on him. Maybe the refs were more fearful of Huggy's wrath.
I find it ironic that players get a T for staring and coaches sometimes get one for stepping out of the box but do not get one for screaming at and berating the refs incessantly; I imagine if that would be the case Huggy and Coach K would not last until half time.
...assuming Weber can hold on to him...
I did not have access to the game so I did not see the entire game only a number of video clips; Sports Center had a bunch of them. Young likes to have space to operate and even to drive, this is why he takes those long NBA-range 3s with defender farther away. Looks like KSU defense was on his grill and he was also double teamed forcing him to make bad passes under pressure.
Not surprised.
Racism has no color and exists everywhere, in some places more so than others.
See my post just above yours.
I think KSU defense had a lot to do with it and once he stared to miss plays and turn the ball over, it snowballed on him and inexperience showed. I will guess Kruger thought it was best to let him play through the slump and hope he would snap out of it but Weber had a good game plan, one that other conference teams will try to emulate when playing OU; I am sure Kruger will work on that.
He had 20 points, 6 assist which translates to anywhere between 12 and 18 points and 3 steal, which again translates to anywhere between 0-9 point depending on the outcome. So he directly contributed at least 32 and as many as 47 of OU's 69 total points or 46% to 68% of all of OU's scoring, you can't really ignore this.
Compared to what he has been doing, no doubt this was his worst outing of the season, but in context, it is not as bad as it appears at first sight. The kid has huge talent.
Agreed. I am really curious on how good Preston would have been but I also am OK if he does not play at all; the drama has been too much of a distraction and with De Sousa the team is(barring injury) in decent shape personnel-wise.
No doubt, racism is till big in some parts of the South.

@JayHawkFanToo You said "Preston" but ... did you mean "DeSousa" ???
Which post?
I don't believe De Sousa would leave after this season; he will play at least one and possibly two more season at KU.
I am not sure if Preston is coming back after this season, regardless of whether he plays or not. Mama has already indicated that Billy could be making "millions" already so looks unlikely he would stay...but I could be wrong.
If I recall correctly, his dad made it clear that next year Newman will be playing for money; of course he meant the NBA. When you have this frame of mind it is unlikely to change.
Coach Self is not the only one that prefers a primary 8 man rotation by the time conference plays starts. I have heard several other coaches including Jay Wright and, if I recall correctly Coach K, say the same thing.
Remember when UK had so many good players that Calipari started the platoon system? After a few games he called it a failure and went back to a traditional primary 8 man rotation which appears to be the ideal number to develop game time/court chemistry.
Aren't "short 1 scholarship" and "oversigned" the same thing? I believe we are talking about the same thing. Even if KU does not sign anyone else it would be short one scholarship unless someone else leaves in addition to Graham and Svi, right? The question is who?
He sees him every day at practice, during scrimmages and individual drills and he knows a heck of a lot more than we do about his weaknesses and strengths. If he is not playinmg him, there has to be a good reason.
Yes, I know that game time and practice are not quite the same but I posit that Coach Self knows this as well.
Photoshop 101 would have fixed the eyes. Surprising that picture was published as is or maybe it was Photoshopped to look like it does? Weird.
Rupp and Kentucky had tried to get black players such as Wes Unseld and a couple of others that escape me just now, but players stayed away from Kentucky more so because of the local environment that was similar to that in the deep South than sports, even when Rupp was known to the be a racist, but by and large, most schools had already and freely taken black players and as I mentioned, schools like San Francisco, Cincinnati and Loyola won tittles with lineups of primarily black players as far back as 1955.
KU's own team included 3 black, 1 Hispanic and one white player and had been fully integrated for may years. In many ways, athletics were way ahead of society at the time. Even when Wilt came to KU in 1956, the town still had a lot of racism but the sport had already seen past it and by 1965 it was not that big of a deal.
The movie Glory Road had more to do with racism within society at large and less so with sports. Racism still exists in our society today even whens sports are fully integrated. Many of the racial events depicted in the movie were greatly exaggerated for effect or never happened in the first place as it has been extensively documented. Had it not taken so many liberties it could have really been a movie that would be used as a historical reference.
What is it that you have against Young? You have been ragging on him since day one. OK, he had a bad game, so what? Does it make him a bad player? No, it just makes him young, inexperienced and human and your comments sound petty and increasingly redundant.
Young is currently the hottest player is college basketball, last game notwithstanding. If the vote for POY takes place today, he might get some competition form Ayton or Bagley or maybe Ferguson but my guess is that he wins going away; hard not to when he is leading Division 1 in scoring and assist while playing in the toughest conference in the country...think about it. Without him, OU is a marginal top 25 team, with him, OU is a legitimate top 10 team. Any one with an appreciation of basketball would value what this kid does, in my personal opinion, of course
Sit back, relax and enjoy watching him play and maybe you will see something you don't see so far.
This is nothing personal and not intended to start an argument, just an observation and my last words on the subject.
Pretty funny situation. Calipari can be a colorful character, I remember him one time running into the court and pushing one of the twins into position.
I prefer not to look at just one number in isolation, I look at all the stats.
I saw that but I thought there was more time than 7 seconds and I am not sure Martin called a timeout. I believe the refs were conferring and the cheerleaders just run into the court. Calipari did not want SC to set up plays so he waved his team to the court.
Never heard of that. If they have cameras there, they will have an announcing crew.
Not a bad line either...other than the turnovers . He lead OU in points, assists and steals and had only 2 fouls.
The Texas Western victory in the 1966 NCAA Championship game represented the final hurdle for college coaches all through America to come to an understanding that black players could be a huge benefit to their teams and worth the “risks” associated at that time for recruiting black players.
I disagree with that statement and it is based on the Glory Road movie that was an idealized yet flawed Hollywood construct. As far back as 1955 Bill Russell and Casey Jones lead a team with 4 black starters to the title and so did Cincinnati with the Big O in 1962 and Loyola in 1963. At the time UTEP won the titles, the top 4 players in the NBA were Chamberlain, Russell, the Big O and Elgin Baylor and the League was well integrated. No doubt there were some holdovers but the better black players from the South went to play in the Big 10 and the ACC; Kentucky itself had tried recruiting black players like Wes Unseld and others; college basketball was reasonably well integrated by then.
KU starting lineup against UTEP included 3 black, 1 Hispanic and 1 white player. Had Jo Jo’s shot counted and KU made to the finals would they have made such a big issue about race? I think not.
Kentucky missing FT after FT in a foul fest at South Carolina. Two UK players fouled out and 3 others with 4 fouls. One SC player fouled out and another one with 4 fouls. 56 fouls called with just over a minute to go and SC up by 3 points and the ball.
Great week so far...
I believe Bruce just came up with the blue print to beat OU. Every conference team will be studying the video.
OU getting owned in the Little Apple.
Prospects are choosing what they consider squeaky clean programs?
If I remember correctly, today was the first day of classes. I wonder if Billy is attending classes.
They did us a solid a couple of years ago when they beat OU which I believe was at the time near or at the top of the rankings.
A big loss for the Jayhawk nation; he was a special and beloved player. Condolences to his family.
If only Graham and Svi leave as scheduled, won't KU be short 1 scholarship even if no one else signs up?
At this time, I don't believe Malik will make it to the NBA unless there is huge improvement; most likely he will end up overseas and he can probably do that instead of coming back, which would free up one more scholarship.
The big unknown at this time is Preston, does he stay or does he go? do you rather have Preston back for one year with one year already in the program (like McLemore) or do you rather have Langford or Zion instead?
There is a long way to go in conference play but no question that last night's game must be giving the other coaches pause to worry. KU was perceived as being vulnerable this season and now it is once again the team to beat.
If KU ends up getting Romeo or Zion it would make it 4 players..so much for embargo. Have we ever had 4 players in the All-Star? I am thinking that one of the classes leading to the '08 team had 3?
His offense is not quite there but his defense is very good and rebounds well as well. He averages 4.4 rpg and only Doke, Vick and Newman have better numbers, he is also second in the team to Devonte in steals withe 1.3 spg and his 0.7 tpg is the best among the rotation players.
Longevity by itself probably not, productive longevity does.
He is playing against better competition now so the averages are bound to be lower.
You are correct. When he signed his last contract the gist was that he would not play much but be a mentor to their promising bigs.
On the other hand, Kelly Oubre is having a very quiet but very successful season for the Wizards.
Sounds like a good Summer project for Andrea.
And that was a moving screen by Ahmad to boot.
Good think I did not have any thing solid close by otherwise I would be replacing my big screen today; the blanket flew only about half way before landing on my dog who looked at me and shook her head.
The squeaky wheel gets the grease which he can use to improve his Liberace like pompadour.
One quick suggestion, if you are quoting someone, place the comment between double quotes, highlight the comment and then click the Bold and Italic icons at the top and the quote will stand out and not be confused with the rest of the post.
Only a$$ clown and MU homer Jack Harry was selling KU that short. Of course KU made sure to bit** smack little Jack. Remember he also called KU fans "gayhawks"? No one misses Jack.
Outside the first 10 minutes of the game KU's defense was fine, particularly in the second half when KU had only 2 TOs and WVU had 11; I would say our pressure was just fine.
He also said that the 4th (?) foul on Doke looked like a rebound and not a foul.
On more recent and not so good news from ESPN:
Mason recently underwent an MRI, which revealed a tear in the plantar fascia tendon in his right heel. He's expected to miss roughly 4-to-6 weeks, James Ham of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
Spin: Mason had reportedly been dealing with some soreness in his heel, which prompted the Kings to have him undergo additional testing. It's now been confirmed to be a more serious issue, which will cost him 4-to-6 weeks of action. That would put a return somewhere around mid-to-late February, though that will depend on how well the recovery process goes. The rookie second-round pick's absence should pave the way for guys like De'Aaron Fox, George Hill and Garrett Temple to see slightly expanded roles.
The Kings certainly could use him, they are 1-6 in the 7 games he has missed so far.
I respectfully disagree. Huggins is a great coach, only 2 active coaches (Coach K and Boeheim) have more wins than he does and he did it at non-elite programs with less than elite players. You just don't win that many games at any level unless you are a superior coach.
Granted, I don't care for his style of play but when you don't have the players you would like, you have to make do with have you have and has made the best with what has had. Coach K complains and berates officials even more than Huggy and his players are every bid as rough/dirty and nobody seems to complain about him because he coaches a blue blood programs and wears a suit to games. Huggy is the blue collar version of many of the so called top coaches who he has frequently out-coached them. He has definitely been good for the conference and has manage to give KU fits.
Self and Hugging are by far the top coaches in the conference with Kruger in pursuit and Beard showing great potential.
