Zion Tipoff Time Tea Leaves • Jan 20, 2018 10:27 AM

@mayjay

Interesting that the UK publications mention everybody but KU and seems to be by design. Also interesting how they call Zion the most talented and recruited player since LeBron but indicate he is the #2 player in the class; if he is that good, shouldn’t he be #1?

I know the front runner appears to be Clemson with SC making a late push and the win over
UK probably helps some. I would say he is Clemson’s to lose.

A couple of things to consider include the fact that the announcement will be 15 minutes after the KU game is over and during the after game press conference, coincidence? Also, in the picture on the first link he is wearing an Adidas shirt, again, coincidence? I know KU is a long shot but sometimes long shots do come in.:smiley:

Kemba Walker Available • Jan 20, 2018 01:47 AM

@Kcmatt7

Yes, he will get a substantial bump in salary but there is no way Thomas maxes out, that is reserved for elite players and Thomas is not one.

Sam Cunliffe: MIA • Jan 20, 2018 12:17 AM

@mayjay

Selby definitely had the talent for the NBA as shown by his domination in the Summer League and he also played relatively well in the short time he played in the NBA; what he did not have is the temperament for the League. Some players have it and some just don't.

Kemba Walker Available • Jan 20, 2018 12:05 AM

@Kcmatt7

Pretty comparable stats career wise but Thomas last season's stats at Boston are better than any one season for Walker. According to projections, Thomas is getting to the peak of his career while Walker is already on its way down, even when Walker is younger. Thomas salary is one half of Walkers so, I would keep Thomas.

Having said that, Unlikely Walker joins drama queen LeBron in Cleveland. Reports now indicate the Knicks could be his next team.

Day dreaming about next years team • Jan 19, 2018 09:28 PM

@Kcmatt7

Is the magic of Calipari abating? Have prospects finally figured out the emperor has no clothes?

UK is now a marginal top 25 team and fans cannot be happy. With the current level of play plus a deep run into the tournament and KU can shave 3-5 games of the all time wins lead. :smiley:

Kemba Walker Available • Jan 19, 2018 09:11 PM

@Kcmatt7

Rose is a starter once he gets healthy ( if ever). Cleveland just traded for Thomas so unlikely he would be traded since he is playing well for them. Howard is a malcontent every he has played and I just don't see teams waiting/wanting to get him and would clash with LeBron big time since they both have huge egos. Kevin Love is a much better option. Frankly, I just don't see a lot of big name players wanting to move to Cleveland and having to put up with LeBron. Kyrie is a great player and did well at Cleveland but could not wait to leave.

Kemba Walker Available • Jan 19, 2018 06:07 PM

@Kcmatt7

Cleveland already has Thomas, Rose and Wade, the last two untradable. LeBron will likely bolt after the season and Cleveland will go back to being a bottom feeder.

Embiid a starter in the All-Star Game • Jan 19, 2018 06:03 PM

And now that he is an All-Star he no longer wants Rhiana. ↗

Sam Cunliffe: MIA • Jan 19, 2018 06:01 PM

FWIW, I believe that Selby had the talent to play in the NBA, he was the Summer League MVP. His problems were more mental and off the court not his lack of basketball talent. At KU I remember him as being “selfish” and not in a Coach Self follower kind of way.

NCAA Tourney Selection change • Jan 19, 2018 03:58 AM

The computer models warn that the numbers at the beginning of the season are not reliable and they get better as the season progresses and by end of the season they are pretty consistent and reliable. They are now programmed to update the information immediately after new scores are added and you can see that as they update they indicate how many games on that day are included.

@BShark

Unless someone else in addition to Graham and Svi leaves KU will be short one scholarship, right? At this point I think Vick and Doke are coming back, so the other candidates are Newman and Preston; if one leaves we are full, if both leave then there is one scholarship available.

Here is some interesting reading ↗ to keep you busy...

Who is our Barry Brown? • Jan 19, 2018 01:59 AM

@Crimsonorblue22

Then KU can take advantage of that and drive on him like there is no tomorrow.

Who is our Barry Brown? • Jan 19, 2018 01:56 AM

All good points but keep in mind that he will have to defend one of our players and he can get in foul trouble quickly if he is not careful or tries to do too much.

Sam Cunliffe: MIA • Jan 19, 2018 01:47 AM

Since Sam became eligible, other than the Stanford game when he played 9 minutes, KU has not had a game where it was far ahead enough to experiment. Unless KU gets an easy game in the future, I don't see Sam getting a lot of playing time since winning games is now priority one.

Why is there no news on Preston? • Jan 19, 2018 01:29 AM

@SouthernHawk

You can liken the situation to the average trial. The defense, KU Compliance Office, submits exculpatory evidence based on information provided by the defendant, Preston, which may or may not be true or correct but tries to put the best spin anyway. The prosecution, NCAA, takes the information provided by the defense and uses its own investigators to either verify or poke holes on it and obtain its own facts. If it finds the information checks and does not find any thing else then he is cleared otherwise it starts with the process of deciding the proper penalty based on the type and extent of the violations.

Unfortunately all of this takes time, particularly if there is a lot to verify or it needs the defense to respond to information they uncover in the course of the investigation. If the case is simple then verification would be fairly speedy and a resolution would have been made by now. The fact that a decision has not been made would appear to invalidate complications in the case which does not bide well for the defense.

Why is there no news on Preston? • Jan 18, 2018 10:34 PM

All this scrutiny would appear to indicate more issues than just the car. At this point I am no longer optimistic he will play this season; in fact, I would be surprised if he does...pleasantly surprised, of course, but surprised nonetheless.

OK, so here is the question • Jan 18, 2018 10:24 PM

I will say Devonte with Garret and Newman helping with the double team and traps.

@drgnslayr

He is still talking about it; he mentioned it in the press conference after his last loss at AFH.

NCAA Tourney Selection change • Jan 18, 2018 09:22 PM

@Kcmatt7

Only ESPN seems to be fixated with brackets this early. Last night 5 top 25 teams lost to unranked teams, by the end of the season rankings could be quite different so why predict brackets now when they are really meaningless?

"Who Wears Short Shorts??" • Jan 18, 2018 09:17 PM

@RockkChalkk

Short shorts are better from a performance point of view, long shorts are a fashion started by the Fab 5 but not practical. Long shorts when sweaty tend to get heavier and cling and slow you down. World class athletes, for whom tenths of a second are critical, wear very short shorts.

Who is our Barry Brown? • Jan 18, 2018 09:07 PM

@drgnslayr

One factor against, Kruger will work with Trae in fixing the things that got him. If he is smart and listens to his coach he will not make the same mistakes or as often.

@JayHawkFanToo unfortuanately no. Once you're recruited as a player, you can't walk on.

Never heard of that. Many schools that don’t have schoolies available still recruit players and invite them to walk on with financial assistance packages that are very close to a full scholarship.

I was just asking if he would be willing to walk on at KU with the promise of a future scholarship over getting one at a smaller program.

NCAA Tourney Selection change • Jan 18, 2018 08:54 PM

@Kcmatt7

I don’t put to much credence into ESPN Lunardi’s brackets, he is a middle of the pack bracketologist at best.

Who is our Barry Brown? • Jan 18, 2018 08:35 PM

@StLJhawk

I mentioned that in another thread. Young does not have yet the experience to deal with double teams consistently and hence turned the ball over. I am sure he will spend a lot of practice time practicing against double and triple teams and learning how to avoid traps.

Recruiting Thread • Jan 18, 2018 08:27 PM

@BShark

If no scholarships are available, would he be a candidate to walk on, get financial assistance and be on line for a scholarship when one becomes available?

Can Bruce help us out again? • Jan 18, 2018 03:00 AM

Apparently it is a very small number of events and likely none involving ranked or blue blood teams or major conferences.

I am surprised why they just don’t pick up the audio feed of the local broadcast team, a small fee and the publicity probably would do it.

Baylor Bears - Saturday - 5 pm - ESPN • Jan 18, 2018 12:09 AM

ESPN has it as being out indefinitely but not much time left until March Madness so yes, likely out for the season. We will see how the team does playing ISU at home.

Texas has the rivalry thing going but I doubt it can beat TTU.

Good points. This is the way Mario ended up in the NBA where he had to learn to be a PG; however, he had a much, much better resume and stats than Newman playing SG.

Doesn't the Louisville transfer have to sit one year like Cunliffe did?

I do think that SC has a decent chance although Clemson appears to be the favorite.

I know, bad joke...

Sam Cunliffe: MIA • Jan 17, 2018 09:55 PM

Unfortunately, Cunliffe missed the window of opportunity that is the schedule before conference when coaches experiment with rotations. Once conference play starts,. the rotation is pretty much set and players are expected to produce. De Sousa is perhaps the exception since there is an immediate need with bigs but the team has plenty of experienced players at the wing so his current value is limited.

Agreed. He is just getting occasional garbage time and not getting better; he might be better off getting more playing time in the G-League.

KU v. Failor: Bring Your Sunglasses • Jan 17, 2018 07:18 PM

You have to give Drew credit. He took a program that was the text book definition of a $h!th0le and made it into a consistent top 25 team...in Waco, Texas no less.

@mayjay

I can relate to that. Soc. Sec. retirement age used to be 65 and now is 66 and eventually will creep up to 70 to keep the system solvent.

Can Bruce help us out again? • Jan 17, 2018 07:11 PM

Oubre was not a starter at the beginning of the season, became one, had a solid but unspectacular season, was drafted and he is doing rather well in the League. Just sayin'...:smile:
