@wissox

Louisville is already on schedule to forfeit well over 100 games, its national title and final four appearances; it is now under appeal and based on the new events likely will not prevail.

Did not mean to imply an arrest. They can be invited to testify but unless they have leverage, I am not sure they could force them to testify and even then, all they have to do is take the fifth...just sayin'...

In a somewhat related note, Texas is revamping the Irwing Center. At one time, the plans was to tear it down to expand the Medical Center and build a newer, nicer, state of the art arena elsewhere. I guess Smart's lack of success to date put an end to that.

@BShark

There is a good chance that when all is said and done college BBall will never be the same again.

As the expression goes, a rising tide lifts all ships. Likewise, an investigation of this magnitudes will probably affect all big time programs to one extent or another. Once the NCAA gets involved we might see so many penalties and appearances vacated that the affected teams might start their own version of the NCAA. We ain't seen nothing yet...😳

@BShark

If you look a the article and others written contemporaneously, many consider Mitch an elite athlete. His rebounding is well above average for someone his size and with comparable playing time. I would love to see what he can do if he is given enough game minutes to get confident and develop his game.

I agree. I mentioned before that as records become reachable it is not only probable but likely that the urge to achieve them and the competitive DNA take over and he continues coaching until he gets some of them under his hat.

@ParisHawk

Is it illegal for a recruit to receive money? As long as he pays taxes on the money it is likely not illegal. Of course he would no longer be able to play college sports but other than that I am not sure there are any other consequences. A cash payment made to a third or fourth or fifth party might be difficult to trace.

ROMEO LANGFORD • Sep 27, 2017 05:43 AM

@jayballer54

At this time Louisville is radioactive and no prospect will touch it. This is why Romeo Langford is reconsidering his options now that Louisville, which seemed to the likely destination, is most likely out. Nothing really surprising. Looks like Pitino has finally run out of luck.

After what the coach said afterwards, what exactly did you expect him to do?

Maybe you should read this... ↗

More Flag/Anthem Controversy • Sep 26, 2017 10:01 PM

@justanotherfan

No. The lack of respect for the flag and national anthem is not abated by the owners allowing it to happen. You understand the owners have to have good relation with the players and not many of them are not willing to alienate them; same thing with reporters. When revenue continues to drop and the checks to the NFL become smaller, we will see how it works out. Networks have already issued refunds for advertisement when the projected viewership was not met.

We will also see what happens to Alejandro Villanueva from the Steelers after his coach threw him under the bus. Now, Ben Roethlisberger has publicly indicated he is having second thoughts about the boycott.

Whiff City • Sep 26, 2017 01:11 AM

Maryland is the first team I actually followed back when Lefty Driesell was the coach and I agree, hard to think of Maryland being anywhere other than the ACC.

Whiff City • Sep 26, 2017 12:47 AM

@mayjay

Do you realize that before last season, the previous time South Carolina went to the NCAA was in 2004 and before that in 1998 and both times the lost in the round if 64?

Coach Martin notwithstanding and going by their track record, last season was a fluke.

More Flag/Anthem Controversy • Sep 26, 2017 12:36 AM

@justanotherfan

Way to throw a red herring on the issue. I have indicated several times that I do not have a problem with athletes expressing their opinion on this or any issue as long as they do it on their own time and without disrespecting what most of us hold in high esteem.

I would actually listen to them and have more respect if they would call a press conference on their own time or if they actually would, on their own time, do something about it and help the community. Funny that Kaepernick did not seem to bother with any of it until he was benched and then the protest started. I don't see any of the other players protesting doing anything to help solve the issue either other than alienating fans.

Again, the issue that I and many others have IS NOT what they are doing but how they are going about it. You can spin it any way you want but this is what it boils down to.

(said in @justanotherfan

The protests at games are not sports related but political. In that case, shouldn't athletes stick to sports and stay out of politics, at least not on company time and at their place of work? I tune into sport events to watch sports not to hear about their politics. If they want to do it they should do it in their own time and place.

Interesting that you feel the president should not talk about what most people believe is clearly a political issue but athletes should make political statement during games. Double standard much?

Whiff City • Sep 25, 2017 04:24 PM

@BeddieKU23

I am not sure if you meant going to Maryland and staying in the ACC. Maryland is in the Big 10 now.

Whiff City • Sep 25, 2017 04:01 PM

@mayjay

If you were a mother of a top prospect, wouldn't you want him to prove himself at the higher level at a program like KU where he will have considerably bigger exposure rather than a second tier program like Clemson? Wanting him to go to a lesser program so he is close to home seemes like a very selfish thing to do.

@Bwag

Cleats are not even part of the equation. Even basketball shoes are a small part of all the athletic shoes they sell. Football has by far the bigger audience and brings the most money for most programs except for a handful. Even at KU, and as strange as it seems, the football programs brings a bigger revenue than basketball.

Welcome David McCormack • Sep 24, 2017 11:38 PM

Great get for the program. Looks like KU is set with bigs, need either Dotson or Grimes (both would be even better) and hopefully Zion and with that we have a heck of a class.

@HighEliteMajor

Adidas offers KU a much better deal than the others do. Nike has big programs in the Midwest already signed and with the current status of the football program, KU is not an attractive or a priority target for them; the marketing demographics do not favor KU either.

Under Armour is more interested in marketing to the big urban centers in both coasts and again, with the lack if a good football program, KU is not an attractive target for them. Thank God for Adidas who seems to value the basketball program more so than football.

Let's face it. KU is in a small market (on CST) with a decent basketball following and a non- existing one in football so, from a marketing perspective, KU is just not an attractive program. All thing considered, KU has done remarkably well with Adidas.

@Kcmatt7

One quick and sure way to fix Social Security. Have congress join the program and do away with their current retirement plan that pay them obscene amounts of money. They are vested after 5 years in the program (1 term senator and 3 terms congressman) and they can retire at 62 with 5 years, at 50 with 20 years and at any age with 25 years of service.

Have them join social security and see how quickly they fix the system. Same thing for health care, have them join AC and see how quickly the u fix it.

Well here ya go - -for what it's worth • Sep 21, 2017 03:07 PM

@mayjay

After winning the title in 2014 Ohio State was after nationally ranked players Ivan Rabb, Jaylen Brown, Cheick Diallo (remember him?), Thomas Bryant and point guard Isaiah Briscoe...it got none of the above; granted, I am not sure if any was from Ohio which is know for developing football more so than basketball players, although KU did get Carlton Bragg from Ohio. One top player that was from Ohio is Luke Kennard, the top player in Ohio that year who chose Duke instead. BTW, Thad Matta was fired earlier this year.

Alabama got two top 50 players #4 Collin Sexton and #34 John Petty for the 2017 class...AFTER it lost to Clemson in the title game. Before that and after winning 4 titles in the last 8 years, the only top 50 player I can remember is Terrance Ferguson who also committed to Arizona and ended up playing overseas anyway.

The only school that had champions in football and basketball in the same season recently is Florida and that was while back, and after Donovan left it has not been the same. The success was not due to the success of the other sport but having great coaches in both programs.

KU basketball games on DirectTV? • Sep 21, 2017 04:37 AM

@hawkfanforever

Be careful with DirectTV. A friend of mine got it a couple of months ago through a promotion and once she signed and scheduled installation, they changed a lot of the terms and rates.

For example, the equipment/boxes and antenna are covered for only the first month and after that if something goes wrong you are responsible for the repair unless you buy insurance for it. I know of no other provider that does this. The installers are paid a flat rate and they rush through the process cutting holes in walls an leaving cables all over; I would have had a cow if they did that in my home. More importantly, every time it storms or even rains she loses channels and get mostly snow and the boxes get reprogrammed. She is not at all happy with it. At one time I had considered getting it but now, there is no way I would get it....actually, I am considering cutting the cord altogether ad getting only Internet and something like Sling or Hulu.

Five more Years? • Sep 20, 2017 11:56 PM

@DoubleDD

Once he gets close to 59 and a number of records become attainable, he will probably sign up for another contract and set many records. Being so close and not going for it does not seem like something he would do.

Whiff City • Sep 20, 2017 11:44 PM

@RockkChalkk

Jerry Meyer had McCormack going to OSU; this is big positive development for KU, no doubt about it.

Well here ya go - -for what it's worth • Sep 20, 2017 11:33 PM

@mayjay

As per KenPom, Clemson finished last season ranked #45; only OU at #65 and Texas at #70 from the Big 12 finished lower and both are expected to be much improved the upcoming season.

National titles for Alabama and the OSU did not do much for their basketball programs.

Contemplating The Cupcake Schedule • Sep 20, 2017 11:27 PM

@HighEliteMajor

Who will be better?

The PAC 10? I don't think so; Arizona and USC will be good and probable UCLA, depending on how quick the new players develop. Nothing much after that

The SEC? There is Kentucky and Florida, maybe Alabama and then it drops quite a bit from there. I just don't see MU as being a top 25 team.

The Big10? Michigan State and then the next two top ranked teams are Minnesota and Northwestern and a distant Purdue.

The ACC? Well, there is Duke and Miami and Louisville with UNC and Notre Dame a step below and after that not much. As usual, the ACC has some contenders at the top but the bottom half is weak.

As I mentioned, the Big 12 has one true contender, a couple of very good team and the rest, except possibly for KSU, are above average, top 50 teams. The true strength of the conference is that essentially all teams are in the top 25% overall.

Once conference play starts KU's RPI will go up.

Well here ya go - -for what it's worth • Sep 20, 2017 05:39 PM

@jayballer54

Zion is from Spartanburg, South Carolina (born in North Carolina) so the local schools. South Carolina and Clemson which are 90 and 60 miles from his home, got complimentary visits. Also, Williamson's step father played for Clemson.

Most (not all) kids want to go away from home for college and both of the local schools are way too close and except for last year's NCAA run, neither program has been particularly successful recently. It will come down to KU and UK.

Contemplating The Cupcake Schedule • Sep 20, 2017 04:32 PM

The latest Bracketology has 8 conference teams going to the dance; 80% attendance would be unprecedented. As usual, the conference will have one elite team and a number of good to very good teams and overall the conference will be one of the top two.

West Virginia will be good and so will be Baylor. IF TCU and Tech maintain or improve from last year, it will be a huge plus. OU, OSU and Texas are projected to improve from last year and ISU should be roughly the same. The only team projected to drop is KSU. Overall, the League should be comparable or better than last season.

The conference schedule will be plenty strong so I am not worried.

@kjayhawks

I met Coach Gill and he is a really nice and decent individual but as a HC he was horrible. He basically let the inmates run the asylum and discipline was extremely bad and lax and academics were on the way to sanction to the program. His answer was to impose curfews that were not even enforced.

Liberty is a completely different program where most players have a religious background and come to attend school first and play football second. It is the ideal program for someone like Gill; KU and by extension a Power 5 conference program is not.

@mayjay

And 3 of the 4 are Zenger's...

Tom Keegan thinks Zenger's seat is getting pretty hot. ↗

@Texas-Hawk-10

I would not think the money for the stadium is tied to Zenger staying as AD.

Do you realize the football team has not won a single road game since Zenger became AD in 2011?

Whiff City • Sep 20, 2017 01:27 AM

@Crimsonorblue22

Indeed...too late to get coffee. :smile:

I suspect I will be watching a lot of their games.

@justanotherfan

In that case we have to include teams such as San Francisco, Cincinnati, Providence, La Salle and others that were very good at one time. There is no way to leave Duke out; whether we like it or not, it is one of the top 4 programs in the modern era. Except for last year, UCLA has not been that good recently and its glory days were a long time ago.

Whiff City • Sep 20, 2017 12:46 AM

@Crimsonorblue22

You are correct, I forgot about it. He will be playing with McLemore. :smiley:

Whiff City • Sep 19, 2017 09:37 PM

@HighEliteMajor

Remember that Mario Chalmers did not play PG at KU, RussRob did, but he had to move to PG on the NBA. He did pretty well at his new position but now he seems to be unable to hook up with a team because of his previous injury. I am sure he is pretty much set for life even if he does not play another game in the NBA although you would think there is a team out there that could use him.

@justsayn

I understand where you are coming from and I feel exactly the same way when people second guess Coach Self.

Having said that, there is a huge difference. Coach Self wins at the best click of any coach, Coach Beaty...well, not so much. Hard to argue with Coach Self's results, not so hard with Coach Beaty's.

We all support Coach Beaty and I have to say that before the season, I was the most excited I have been for the programs since the Mangino best days. There were many returning players and eligible transfers and recruiting appeared to have been well above the usual haul at KU. However, after 3 games I see that the team has really not changed that much and has not performed to expectation.

Perhaps our expectations were too high and unrealistic but it would be nice to see some light at the end of the tunnel but I honestly can's say I see any at this time. Perhaps the team will surprise and win a game or two but again, realistically, I just don't see this happening.

I have maintained in the past that a coach has to be given a reasonable amount of time to turn the program around and a minimum of 4-5 years; however, there must be some demonstrated progress during this time and I am sorry to say but I just don't see it at this time.

No doubt that Coach Beaty is a dedicated, high character individual but so are most coaches and without tangible results he is is just another one of the bunch.

My question to you is: If KU does not win any other games this season, what should KU do? I will answer my own question and say he should get one more year...what say you?

ZION • Sep 18, 2017 08:18 PM

@mayjay

Sounds like 1-day unofficial courtesy visits to the local in-state schools.

Ohio Bobcats • Sep 17, 2017 04:21 AM

Wow, Texas taking it to USC. USC had to kick a FG to tie the game with 2 seconds left and send it to OT.

@kjayhawks

I really wish I could say I disagree but as much as it hurts I have to agree with you. Like I posted earlier, I just don't see a winnable game in the schedule. KU should be getting paid big bucks to go on the road and get rolled by big programs.

Like most of us, I though Beaty was the answer and we would see steady progress...I just don't see any progress now.

Whiff City • Sep 17, 2017 12:55 AM

@jayballer54

You need to take the blinders off and actually read what I wrote, the answer is there...it is just not what you want it to be so you just ignore it. Nothing else I can add.

Ohio Bobcats • Sep 17, 2017 12:22 AM

I really, really....really...wanted to believe the football team would be decent this season; obviously it's is not. Honestly, I just don't see a winnable game in the schedule. The last 3 games, @Texas, OU and @OSU are going to be painful to watch

Whiff City • Sep 16, 2017 10:11 PM

@jayballer54

OK. So only your opinion counts? Got it.

Remember that absent facts all we can offer is opinions and they are just that...opinions, and as such they are not right or wrong just different....unless they are your apparently in which case they are right and others wrong.

I never said or implied you were wrong, I simply asked for the rationale for your opinion; I would appreciate if you would extend others the same courtesy.
