@jayballer67 I think the only way he leaves for the draft is if the NCAA hammers us b4 the draft. If I'm wrong, I assure you I will be the first to admit it. I say he declares for the draft with the option to come back, and he takes that option and comes back. I could be wrong- I was wrong about Embiid. But I don't think so...lol.

Next Year's Team Thread • Apr 12, 2022 01:58 PM

This is why CB will be back:

1- He has the chance to be this year's Ochai. I believe he deferred to Ochai alot this year the same way Devonte deferred to Frank his senior year. In CB's mind, it is his turn to be the star this upcoming year.

2- His relationship with Juan is extremely tight- they are best friends.

3- He didn't test the NBA waters last year. Och did, came back, and vastly improved his draft order this year. Braun will do the same.

4- CB isn't being mocked as a first rounder. I've seen him come in at 36 in one mock, 54 in another. No doubt, most mocks suck. But the example staring right in his face is Och's path, which is going to compel him to take the same path, and not settle for non guaranteed money.

5- CB is King on campus. Leaving that for the great unknown and the land of the non guaranteed contract is a bridge too far, imo.

6- This isn't a kid that has to score big in the NBA draft to help his family. Plus, the NIL money will tide him over.

This is purely my conjecture- I think CB will definitely test the NBA waters, and will decide to come back. I'm more worried about JW coming back than CB.

I could see this guy being quite a special player for us. Like you said, he's got to bulk and toughen up... but once he gets there physically, he's going to be a keystone for us. Practically from the first time he hit the court, the dude was totally fearless. He nearly immediately drained a 3 pointer, no hesitation... no fear. Champion mentality. I see a breakout coming.

Another offseason with Nijem will do wonders. :flexed_biceps:

Speaking of Nijem, remember when we used to play NCAA tournaments years ago, and our guys were exhausted? I have noticed how much fresher our team looks compared to the other teams- case in point...UNC. We wore out Nova and Miami as well. I know Nijem doesn't get the credit and the publicity that Hudy used to get, but I firmly believe he is superior as a trainer and it showed during the tournament run. He's part of the team that is working hard in the background... that get little to no credit...yet his contribution to our title is enormous.

Been thinking about Remy and Self all day. What a beautiful thing for Self to recognize how much we needed Remy and to trust him and for Remy to deliver.

Remy was my Tournament MVP for us, followed closely by everyone else. Great team effort, but Remy was the star of the show. The only reason he didn't go off on Villanova is because we were in control of the game, and he didn't have to. We lose to Creighton and Prov w/o him. His offense in the national championship game is now legend. Give Dave the FF MOP ( or Ochai), but the 6 game MVP award goes to Remy hands down.

Does Baylor's title make Self hungrier? • Apr 09, 2022 04:13 PM

I rewatched the game for the first time this morning. This was really an amazing team. Terribly inconsistent, but amazing anyway. We won because we ran on them and wore them out. They were gassed- they had nothing left. Even if they had tied it, we would've smoked them in overtime. Our depth won this game. We were fresher, more energetic at the end of the game. UNC was battered, bruised...dragging ass. Braun came out like a badass 2nd half. Dave was the most determined I've ever seen him. And Remy was flat electric. Dujuan doesn't get the headlines, but his defense 2nd half was amazing. And even JW finally got going after his and 1. And the MOP played well , too. I wouldn't call us Danny and the Miracles, and we were never as dominant as 2008, but this team goes in the slot as Self's most offensive gifted team ( my opinion), and one of his ( when they wanted to) greatest defensive teams as well. The runs they made against teams in this tournament goes down as legendary.

@bskeet said in Reflections in the afterglow:

Thinking back across the season, and the tournament, I'd love to hear your reflections.

Big 12 Officiating

I will start my reflections with penance for my criticism of the Big 12 officials. I declared, right here in this community, that the physical style of game that B12 officiating allowed was going to hurt us in the tournament.

I was wrong.

That crazy crew created a crucible that forged two National Champions (Baylor and Kansas) in two years.

The officiating this year was a mess for everyone. It was not limited to the B12. I have no idea what is a block and a what is a charge... I had friends over for the NC with kids and I lost it with some f-bombs in the second half. Not proud of that.

But, it appears to have made the B12 strong and prepared KU well for the epic run. Even Iowa State, who was really not at the level they've been in the past, was well prepared to play incredible defense which allowed them to make a run.

If It Weren't For Bad Luck, I'd Have No Luck at All

After all the years of bad luck in the tourney, this year was different. Things broke our way. And this is not to take away from the team and their amazing efforts.. but sometimes thing just work out.

Our regional was the best setup I think I've ever seen. The matchups were, for the most part, favorable. Injuries made competitive teams (Creighton and Villanova) weaker and upsets removed a few challengers (Iowa LOL, Wisconsin and Auburn) out of our path. But no Kentucky, no Gonzaga, no Duke, no Purdue, no Illinois, no UCLA and no UNC.

Plus, we benefited from the Coach K drama combined with the typical march madness upset drama that overshadowed KU and allow us to stay "under the radar" all the way to the NC game. For a team that always has a target on its back, that target was a bit smaller and a bit more faded than normal.

Remy and the Immaculate Vibe

Let me start by saying the Championship was a Team Effort with a capitol T.

That said, WTF. The dude doesn't really play for the conference regular season. When he's in, it looks like he is out of sync with everyone else. Even as recently as the B12 tournament, there seemed to be confusion when he was on the floor. I recall more than once him looking for direction to the bench or Och pointing to where he's supposed to be.

We are left to wonder: Does he know the system? Is there friction with the other players? Can he, WILL he, ever play defense? What about that injury?

And then, suddenly, he began to fit with our offense or vice versa. Suddenly, our team had two gears. Two very different, distinct styles to the offense. This gave KU a unique advantage: teams trying to scout would look at most of the season and see a monster car. But then they would see the most recent games and see that we could mutate into a race car.

On a dime Remy could flip the switch. I'll be darned if that isn't a reflection of how this team flipped the switch in the second half against Miami and again against UNC.

We don't get past Creighton or Providence without Remy. And we don't beat UNC without Remy. He took the shots -- and MADE the shots -- that others were either unable to because the defense was keying on them or they deferred (afraid). Remy personified confidence and courage.

I have always hated hearing Rafferty say "ONIONS" when someone makes a clutch shot, but Remy delivered the quintessential example of that phrase. He forced tough, contested shots at absolutely crucial moments... and nailed them.

This is not to take away from Ochai who is THE MAN and did this multiple times in multiple games throughout the season.

But, consider this as context on Monday's performance: Remy shot 4/6 from 3; Mario shot 3/7 from 3 in the 08 NC. The drama of Mario's one shot is undeniable, but the stats should help us appreciate Remy's performance in this NC. Self — who so values blood, sweat and tears — seemed flummoxed and hesitant to shower adoration on Remy because he defied the formula; Remy still, absolutely crushed it even though he was coming off more than a month of lost practice and playing time.

Come to think of it, back to the luck theme.. let's put Remy choosing to come to KU last summer in that category. This is the conclusion we all dreamed was possible when he said he was transferring here. But I don't think anyone could have imagined Remy's journey.

Team, Toughness and Treasures

I heard one talking head on Tuesday credit the 2nd half comeback to "the law firm of McCormack, Martin and Braun." That sounds about right. Big Dave (Good Dave) finally gets the spotlight he deserves. Jalen Wilson was a rock throughout the tournament. Dave and Jalen are a perfect reflection of this team: under the radar all year. Part of that was their own doing. But midway through the B12 season, there was no reason for anyone to sleep on Jalen or Dave. They both did all the dirty work.

And speaking of dirty work, Dejuan: how I underestimated thee. (I'm so glad we don't need to talk about the final 4 seconds). The team credited his defense as the spark for the 2nd half run. And why not? Runs can't happen without stops, and his steals and energy triggered the comeback.

Finally, what a treasure to have kids that grew up wanting to be Jayhawks. Christian Braun, hailing from a small town in Kansas is the classic Jayhawk. Toughness incarnate. Mitch and Ochai fall in this category.

Again, how lucky are we that we had so much experience and so much love on this team? And how lucky are we to have this forum (thx @approxinfinity) and this community to share our love of the team and the program throughout the year.

Rock Chalk.

Ok, TLDR:

I apologize to the B12 officials. Remy delivered in the most heroic way. Jalen and Big Dave (Good Dave), flying under the radar, overshadowed, delivered again and again. I underestimated Dejuan. And FINALLY... KU had the stars align just a bit. Nice way to celebrate the 100th anniversary of our first championship.

PS:

Why couldn't the national announcers get the names of our players right (Braun, pronounced: Brown, Ochai Agbaji, pronounced Oh-chi Ah-bah-gee.) They had 3 weeks and 67 games.

That's truly great analysis. Remy was the hidden star- the guy that changed the whole makeup of the team. He was much better than any of us realized, and he flat cooked tournament time. How many times did he make a basket when we were tied, or struggling? The passing he displayed was otherworldly at times. It's just a shame we didn't have him for his whole career. I certainly hope the NBA can find a place for him, although his height is going to be a minus.

Dave took control of this game in the second half, and even before that in the locker room. The guys needed a leader to step up and it was Dave. His words, demeanor... energy... it stayed positive and determined! This really was his game! Started with that first smoke he had on Bacot. He seemed to always carry the energy level of this team. With his heart, his struggles... he may not be our most talented big of all times but he sure has earned his way into my heart and my greats list!

OMG...GET OUT OF MY HEAD! I was literally coming in to post the same exact thought ( although not as well-written as yours). The real leader of the team was Dave. The fact that he wanted to go against Bacot speaks volumes. This was way beyond Good Dave- this was Confident Dave. And Confident Dave is a BEAST. Confident Dave can pull down buildings with a single arm. CD can eat Jay Wright's lunch anytime he wants. Just a massive Final Four performance.

I really do hope one of Wilson/Braun returns because that guarantees KU would have a featured player back. Both come back and the ceiling for next year is a lot higher then if only one returns.

Before the tourney started I thought we'd see both back. Now we have no idea what would motivate them to come back.

For Braun he's a Kansas kid, a lifetime KU fan and as we've found out his bond with Dejuan Harris goes a lot further then the basketball court. What does Braun want his legacy to be? It's already sky high. Another year could send it to the rafters like Ochai or he leaves on a high like Mario Chalmers did. His NIL game was just starting to ramp up as the season was ending (merchandise/apparel) so that's another thing that may incentivize him to come back if his draft grade isn't to where he has a guarantee.

For Wilson he's got parts of his game that could use developing. The chance to take on that "alpha" role and be a featured scorer could be the kind of opportunity he needs to change NBA minds.

I'm thinking like you do. Could be wrong, though. I think the starters next year will be Juan/CB/Rice/Wilson/Zach with Nigel Pack coming off the bench. I've learned from Embiid that you can't tell what they will do.

We're message board posters. We aren't qualified to pick up the team's dirty laundry, let alone run a powerhouse team.

Yet it doesn't stop us from caterwauling.

As a fanbase, we were downright ugly to Dave and Juan this year. And the dude that called CB "Christy"... I haven't forgotten it- but I did block the guy.

And the Remy haters were just terrible- see why you can't believe anything Vernon says?

And the dirty, grimy Self haters had to be the worst.
One fool ( you know who you are-we do, too) decided he would relive 2017 yesterday and bring up Bill's comment from 2017 about "fool's gold". I mean....unless you just despised Bill, why would a comment that Bill said 5 years ago be your prevailing thought unless you were here just to troll?

On another site, I got so annoyed at all the fair weather fans saying we were beat, it was all over, blah, blah, blah, that I told them I hope the team didn't quit like they did.

So the team had to overcome lots of obstacles ( including some in their own fanbase) to win the title. What an amazing team, what an amazing program...RCJHGKU

I'm not done rolling in it-it's just so amazing. I might roll in this one for years. It's been like a weight ever since 2008....so many great teams, so many teams that came up short... the POUNDING we put on Nova was great! The 2nd half of the Miami game was incredible. The first half defense against Providence, the way we swatted away Creighton's bid for an upset, and to top it off by coming back from 16 down was storybook, it was amazing, and it validated this team, this program,us fans, and this coach.

Being MOP likely would have clinched it. More complicated case now.

He has over 1100 points and over 650 rebounds. Definitely not pedestrian numbers, but at a school like Kansas, where getting your jersey retired is necessarily hard, I'm not sure he makes the cut without some individual honors.

That's part of why I wish he had gotten MOP. It would have made it an automatic. Despite my criticism of his play, I actually have always liked Big Dave. He seems like a good guy. He's worked hard to improve since arriving at KU. He's battled through adversity. Even when he wasn't a good fit, he didn't pout or complain - he just kept working. And now he's a champion. I'm extremely happy for him that his last three games as a Jayhawk were three of his very best. He wrote his own perfect ending and deserves the recognition for that.

This could do for Self what that first title did for Roy Williams at UNC. It got the monkey off his back and he was able to relax a little more, which allowed his teams to relax in March (and April, when it really counts).
