On 2nd thought, we better not award anyone anything except for @approxinfinity who is the true GOAT for his rescuing us and somehow finding us after we all bolted from the KUSports thing. I remember just thinking all of a sudden like these online folk have been a part of my life for years and now they're all gone but I somehow got contacted by someone to come to the Bucket. @Kcmatt7 said in NIL, transfers, NCAA Policies and where do we go from here:

I am still not seeing the issues other than the transfer market being crazy.

Miami paying big bucks for a player is GOOD for the sport. They've only made the tournament 11 times in history. They beat out some top tier basketball schools for him. If money wasn't a thing, Nigel Pack is either back at KSU or somewhere in Indiana.

NIL is going to let some schools who can get creative compete at a national level. And I don't think it will decimate mid-majors the way people think. We just saw a 15 seed make an elite eight run. Literally the furthest a 15 seed has gone in the history of the tournament. And the only reason that roster is being decimated is because the coach left.

While mid-major's will lose their best players yearly (it is a reality) they also will get to backfill their roster with the Tristan Enaruna's of the world. A guy with P5 athleticism and experience. There is a give and take.

I do like the idea of a shorter transfer window.

I also like the idea of limiting the number of transfer roster spots allowed or some sort of mechanism that doesn't allow for 1500 new spots to open up. So, you are free to transfer, but there might not be a scholarship for you waiting on the other side of it. Almost like how football limits you to 25 scholarships per recruiting class. You can have 13 scholarships, but each year you can only add 3 players from the portal. Something like that I think could work.

No matter what I don't think it is the end of the sport or the world. This last NC game just set a record for viewers so people are still watching games.

That's a good idea. Limit transfers to 3 a year. I would also put a provision in that you can transfer the first time and be immediately eligible, but have to sit out a year with any more transfers you make.

It feels like we are just scratching the surface of how lucrative NILs can be. Having an advertising presence can help build a brand that someone who is social media savvy (like Jalen maybe) might capitalize on after college whether or not he goes league

If I win the Powerball tonight, there WILL be a Jethro NIL.

Everyone thought MJ Rice would go straight to the G league. And Zuby looks like a BEAST. We haven't signed this amount of talent since 2014, with Wigs and Joel.

P.S. Udeh is very impressive, too.

Next Year's Team Thread • Apr 23, 2022 11:45 PM

@Crimsonorblue22 You bring up a good point- the reason I thought CB would come back was I didn't think he was ready maturity-wise for the NBA. I felt like his big challenge this past year was to be really good at the college level, and he accomplished that. I'm not sure he was focused or even thinking on the NBA at all- he didn't declare for the draft last year, so I've been assuming he was going to follow the Ochai path- come back for the senior year, etc. But I think he had such a breakout year that it thrust him into the 1st round picture, which could change things.

@Jethro I wish you would've, those ladies did some damage to me.

I think calling them ladies is a bridge too far. They're lucky the dude wasn't armed. That happened right by Reliant Stadium in Houston- they're doing construction at Kirby and 610 so the traffic is at a standstill at that spot everyday. It was such a bizarre scene!

@wissox said in What's our fate?:

@Jethro I saw that. Baseball has a problem. Maybe more of that will help improve ratings and draw in the younger generation!

I'm driving home today, and there is a 3 car pileup on the feeder road. 1 car hit a car which knocked that car into the car in front. So, 2 ladies jump out from the first car, and the driver in the 2nd car rolls his window down, and the ladies start whaling on the guy in the 2nd car... throwing haymakers. Then they jump back into their car and drive away. They had a temporary tag, so I couldn't read the license tag, or I would've called 911. It was like watching a Jerry Springer episode. I couldn't believe it. Violence all over the country is running amok.

Roy Williams, mike K, now Jay wright … these were college HOF level guys who competed with HCBS for top recruits. Now they are gone and frankly Roy’s and Mike replacements haven’t proven themselves and could very likely not live up to the lofty expectations at those schools. hell Jay W MADE the Villanova program what it was, and won two titles. I believe his first two or three years were nit invites. The dude was a monster at building a top ten program.

This has got to be really good for Kansas. Who is better than Self now? Calamari? Boeheim? Yes there are the young new coaches that are turning programs around, the guys that will someday be potential HOF coaches, but we have arguably the BEST coach as of now in D1

Ding Dong, the classy coach is retired...

@Crimsonorblue22 Figured that was self explanatory. He didn't really go into details but I've talked about it here before. He was disappointed in his draft feedback which led to the dui etc Early in the season he was focused way too hard on that instead of just trying to help the team win. That's why he was tight as hell and shot so poorly.

I think he will be 2nd in scoring next year, right behind CB.

Dennis was a 40% trey shooter as a freshman. Did you ever watch him and the Shockers play during his stay there? I can't believe he stayed there that long because their offense was a joke and it hurt everyone's game... He is an elite athlete with great form.

Being a great defender along with Juan would be a great match.

I'm willing to bet he'd be shooting treys above 40% next year as a Jayhawk.

You have an emotional investment in the kid which I don't have. What worried me was on an 18 minute highlight video of his very best plays, I counted two (2) drives to the basket. Him playing together with Juan on defense would be great, but the flip side is he'd be playing offense together with Juan, and combining a point guard who doesn't score with a guard that doesn't drive, and shoots 30% from 3 is a bridge too far for me.

What's our fate? • Apr 19, 2022 01:34 PM

@BeddieKU23 said in What's our fate?:

@Jethro

We shall see. Any outcome is possible with the NCAA

This is why I feel better about it. This is from an attorney on Jayhawk Slant:

This is an administrative process, not even a civil or criminal one, and the bar for "guilt" is "more likely than not". So that is bothersome.

That said, I have some experience with administrative hearings and judgments, and read through every page of KU's law firm response to the allegations (I didn't read through HCBS's response, assuming it was essentially identical). IMHO, the law firm eviscerated the NCAA allegations, including to reference in-house conversations immediately after the wiretapped conversations and texts, and those in-house and contemporaneous conversations support KU's position that no wrong-doing occurred by HCBS, et al. In other words, when those happened, no one had any reason to believe they needed to "cover" themselves.

To take one "episode", DeSousa's guardian attested to not knowing the $2,500 was even coming and when he contacted the Adidas sleazeball about it, he basically said he was sure the guardian knew what to do, or words to that effect. The guardian said he kept, I believe, $500 or so and gave the rest to charity.

IMHO Self's, and the U's, adamant public denials of violations combined with KU's response, make it highly unlikely that the NCAA will issue any significant punishment. Any finding of fault would seem at great risk to be overturned based on being arbitrary and not supported by facts in evidence. [Emphasis mine - HE] (In one admin case I participated in, the guilt finding was thrown out because it relied on what might have happened vs what could be conclusively shown.) I would expect both KU and HCBS to sue including to demand an immediate injunction. I don't think the NCAA wants another NIL-like embarrassment, but also KU wants this to go away. So I'd bet that behind the scenes there's a negotiation going on whereby KU and HCBS et al admit no guilt but agree to HCBS being held out of practice for some time period or maybe not coaching some number of games at season start, or something similar. Self may be reluctant to agree even to something like that, he certainly presents himself that way, but he also could recognize that a wrist slap in face of allegation of five, Level 1 infractions, would be a clearcut victory.

Finally, given that all this has been brought about by illicit behavior of Adidas employees, it wouldn't be surprising
if there's some "hold harmless" language floating around whereby much of KU's legal expenses are paid by Adidas.

General process is can't pursue relief in court until letting the administrative process run its course. So no court is likely to accept it until all recourse within NCAA has occurred. But there've been instances wherein NCAA final decision was reversed or blocked in court filing. Relief can be granted if the member had no choice/was coerced, the process violated the org's own policies (very often the case), or the policies were in themselves illegal or unenforceable.

What's our fate? • Apr 19, 2022 10:43 AM

@BeddieKU23 said in What's our fate?:

Taken from the Phog.. This poster's father is connected to the Athletic Department. He's usually been solid on his info. Here's what he had to say..

  • So, my father isn’t as in tune with this as much as other aspects of the Athletic Department; but some general things: Self and the KUAD are now pushing for this to be over. This whole time, they were content to delay this until the end of time; but the tune has changed and Self is ready to ‘take some medicine’ to move past this. That may mean abdicating to some demands.

  • So, from what I understand, Self was willing to fight any violation and any punishment to the ends of the Earth. Now he’s willing to take a small hit so he can move forward. The extent of those violations and punishments is not entirely clear right now (because no deal has been made); but apparently Bill and KT are willing to take suspensions in the non-con. Apparently there may have been something to Vernon’s hearings that the NCAA wanted a post season ban (possibly for multiple years) for the coaches; but that is a no-go for Self. We are apparently willing to meet them on fines, and a small scholarship reduction. Apparently vacating wins or a F4 is out of the question. If they can make a deal on a palatable agreement, then this thing will be done soon. If the IARP doesn’t play ball, then it’s back to fighting them every inch again.

The more I research it, the better I feel about it. This is going to be a small hit- not the biggie I envisioned.

Dennis brings other qualities to the table, too.

We all have come to know that it isn't just if a kid can ball. Their attitudes are equal contributions (or not).

We may need a big dose of humility on next year's team coming off a NC.

I don't know if he's a good fit... that's Self's job. I do know he's headed to Indiana for a visit.

Great defensive player. If we only had to play defense, he'd be great. Offensively, he's sub par. I'd be afraid Bill would fall in love with his defense, and would overlook how mediocre he really is on offense. This is no Ochai...lol.

Tshiebwe isn't a great fit at the NBA level. Too small to play as a center, not a good enough shooter to play the 4. He's a great college player, but may not find a role as a pro.

There's always a place in the NBA for a great rebounder.
