@jaybate-1.0 The Washburn player was trying to slap at the ball, and got Devonte's face instead. Not sure why he was grabbing the back of his head- maybe he got hit there as well. Those are some bad ass Ichabods.
@brooksmd He got clobbered. So did Devonte.
@jaybate-1.0 There you go...makes sense about Oubre. Let me ask you this- did Wayne look much slower to you than in the Red/Blue exhibition game? Where was this human dynamo we saw last game?
@HighEliteMajor "Don't mistake quickness, and speed, and flow for finesse. The 2008 team was much the same way. Guys were scrappers, But they were basketball players. Of all of our teams since 2008, this has the same "look" of our 2008 team."
Hubba, hubba. Music to my ears. Can't wait to see the look on crybaby's ( Harrison twins) face when he's matched against a 6'8" guard on the perimeter.
@KansasComet Dynamic potential. Frank looked the best I've ever seen him. Devonte, Cliff, and Kelly all looked very good to me ( although I didn't get the Oubre 10 minute wait to get in the game.)
Ok, where the hell was Wayne Selden? Where was that team leader from the Red/Blue exhibition game? And holy smokes ...did Coach Self have Roy teach our guys how to make free throws? I thought it was 2003 for a while there .
I think we have a national title contending team. Great defense, A much quicker, more active team than last year.
@HighEliteMajor I'm glad Coach Self realized he was pressuring his shooters. I don't think Roy ever admitted he did the same thing.
@KULA That was rude of me. I apologize for reacting.
@KULA **"Beginning to feel more and more that Bill's just kind of a dick". **
He's not as big a dick as some of his critics, mainly the ones who wildly speculate without a scintilla of proof.
@ralster I finally found someone as jazzed as me about Oubre. Chalmers with height...love it!!!
@HighEliteMajor I'll be surprised if Oubre and Cliffie aren't in the starting lineup. Isn't Oubre considered an excellent defender?
@bskeet He's perfect for Creighton. They made the 2nd most 3s in the NCAA last year- they run that perimeter offense. I'll bet old man McDermott is already chomping at the bit.
@Crimsonorblue22 Oh. It's a green pepper. I thought I had stumbled into a Michigan State hazing ritual.
@globaljaybird There was no scenario where Conner would get enough minutes. Once the "PG" position was taken off the table, there was no more room at the inn for Francamp. Swee is 6'8" in Jayhawk height, and Greene is almost as tall. They both can shoot 3s as well. After Conner's outstanding NCAA tournament, I got excited for his future prospects. All the salty vets told me "no way he gets minutes". Salty vets 1 , Steve 0.
@Statmachine I am glad he is transferring, so he can play full time. I think the kid is going to be good. Watch him go play at Creighton, and light up the Big East.
@wrwlumpy Agreed, Mr. Lumpy. I think Devonte will be very, very good.
@Crimsonorblue22 " I want to win!" I like the way you think. BTW, Kenpom has his preseason rankings up. He has the good guys ranked 4th:
@Kip_McSmithers My hair isn't greasy enough to be Cal. Plus, I'm much better looking.
@drgnslayr I have a different list for POY... My top 3 list is as follows:
1) Wayne Selden
2) Perry Ellis
3) The rest of the KU team
Our goal should be to win the SEC in non- conference games, then win conference, then win the NC. We will be a lean, mean, winning machine.
Jesse is the best. Congratulations, Mr Newell. To celebrate, how about another post?
@JayHawkFanToo I understand that you have to have a high level of proof to go forward on these investigations. Here is how ESPN characterized the scandal:
**
"Since 2011, the university has conducted several reviews related to the academics scandal and provided the NCAA with updates. North Carolina announced in 2012 that it had found problems with 54 classes in the Department of African and Afro-American Studies (AFAM) taught from summer 2007 to summer 2011, including grade changes, forged faculty signatures on grade rolls and limited or no class time.
North Carolina forwarded the results of that investigation to the NCAA, which ruled the university did not break any rules related to the AFAM scandal."
Maybe the threshold wasn't met- I just remember picking my jaw up off the floor when it was dismissed. I'm not convinced the NCAA isn't being dragged into this, almost against their will They learned their lesson with SMU - do what's right, and you kill the cash cow. Yes, i hope Roy was clean when he was here - makes you wonder why he needed an academic adviser to follow him from KU to UNC. I could see an asst coach, a weights coach,etc... but an academic adviser?
@jaybate-1.0 This is going to be big, and going to be quite ugly, I'm afraid. Here's the part that makes me ill:
**
"When you bring your own academic counselor from Kansas and that counselor continued the sham for eligibility purposes, it is not believable that Roy Williams didn't know about it," Gurney said. "He asked the athletic director about the course loads."
That's from CBS, quoting Gerald Gurney,Drake Group president, about the scandal. Which means it is a really big deal What he is saying is that Roy did the same thing here for 15 years. He brings over his 'fixer" from KU...say what????? So, the bottom line will be a whole bunch of grief coming to UNC, and a whole bunch of grief coming for our 15 years with Roy. We won't be on probation for it, but we will hear about it from every KU hater from now until the cows come home.
Here's a link to the entire story: http://www.cbssports.com/collegefootball/writer/jon-solomon/24765822/uncs-unprecedented-academic-fraud-case-will-test-ncaa ↗ ↗**
@JayHawkFanToo
**As far as UNC, the NCAA can act only on proven evidence and not based on stories on a newspaper. Much like a court of law, the NCAA conducts hearings where both side can present their sides and then a determination is made by the hearing committee made up by representatives of member schools. **
I understand the Scully/ Muldur defense- we all want to believe. The NCAA, with the same evidence as UNC, exonerated UNC, while UNC's own internal investigation uncovered an untreated, 18 year cesspool of lies, deceit and fraud. Here's a link to UNC's investigation:
http://www.newsobserver.com/2014/10/22/4255098_unc-investigation-bogus-classes.html?rh=1 ↗ ↗
This is probably the largest case of academic fraud in the history of college athletics, and the NCAA finds nothing? Drops the case? Seriously?
Newell, you're the best. Keep feeding us - we love it!
@HighEliteMajor I feel that giving supreme authority, with complete discretionary power, in a world where billions of dollars are riding on your decisions, is exactly the formula for rampant corruption. Having that supreme authority allowed the NCAA to ignore UNC's blatant violations for years. Until the truth knocked the door down, the NCAA chose to play 'three blind mice". When the story circulated, I don't know -was it a year ago? ... I kept waiting for the hammer to drop, and some very serious allegations of fake classes were going to lower the boom on UNC. 5 weeks later, there's a little blurb that said the NCAA exonerated them. I couldn't believe it, This was willful negligence on the part of the NCAA, and serves as a great example of my point.
@drgnslayr Roy is done as coach at UNC. The only question is when, and how do they pull the plug? Do they allow him to try to weather the storm, and let him try and finish out the year? Or, does a media firestorm take him out sooner than later? Some in the media are now calling this, and I quote, "the worst academic fraud case in NCAA history". This case has gotten so much bigger than I ever imagined, but I don't think we've seen the tip of the iceberg yet.
It puts Roy's visit in perspective. This event could be the highlight, the one good moment, of the rest of Roy's coaching career.
@Jesse-Newell Interview with Pomeroy...great stuff! Pomeroy sounds like he's sold a few cars back in the day, or was it vacuum cleaners?
@jaybate-1.0 LMAO... i don't care who you are, that's funny!
@JRyman I think you're in for a real treat this year. I think we'll be better in a bunch of ways, including defense, passing, ball handling, better 3 point shooting, better guard play, etc. Our challenges will be matching up with bigs in the post, as we are smaller down there than in year's past. Still, we won a national championship with a smaller team, so I think there's certainly a chance we get back to the winner's circle this year.
@brooksmd The Maestro, if you will. He should have a column.
@Jesse-Newell We're not asking for much. We're simply asking you to go through a somewhat similar experience as KU went through in "bootcamp", except it would be like "Writers Bootcamp". Just one tinsy, weensy article a day is all your adoring fan base is askin for. AND, you'll get to write a whole bunch more of these:
Wow, Jaybate. That was an epic response.
@jaybate-1.0 I could be wrong, but i think you may have violated 4 international laws, 18 federal and state laws, and could be the reason why the neighborhood outdoor cat from hell peed on my right front tire today. Here's the breakdown of the 50 mil settlement:
Defendant's Portion of claim: $21,000.00
Atty Fees : ....................................$49,979,000.00
If Pitino had signed 5 blue chippers this summer, does anyone think we would've heard a peep? Rick, being a spokesman for integrity and virtue might not be your bag, even if you're right. Every time you open up the piehole, I think about what you did to your wife, your family, your university the night you got caught by the world with your pants down.
@wrwlumpy Where's Frank? Is he taking the picture?
@wrwlumpy As i understand it, the NCAA already dismissed these charges, and then re-opened the case after a woman named Debbie Crowder rolled on UNC, and spilled the beans. Syracuse is also in deep doo-doo with the NCAA as well. Strangely enough, the NCAA saw no crime when one of the Dook players was walking around with 80k? worth of jewelry the last time they won a N.C. To me, the NCAA is a completely corrupt organization, so i'm not sure if the bribe wasn't paid, or the hush money wasn't received from UNC to call off the dogs. It's strange they would go after the ACC so hard - makes me think Dook wants to take out their competition.
Love a Newell article. Good stuff. Write one a day until the start of the season. I double dog dare you. I think we'll see the best Perry yet this year. I have no doubts that he will improve on both ends of the court. I think the game will slow down for him, and he will be our leading scorer, and one of our go-to guys during crunch time. Heck, he might even try a headfake or two.
@drgnslayr I think there's a different mindset with this team. After Joel went down last year, our team was never the same. Tough is good. Tough wins games. I didn't see tough down the stretch last year - we couldn't dribble, we couldn't pass, we couldn't defend. We looked taut as a trot line full of turtles.
What I take away from the team photo ( on another thread) is that Perry and Wayne flank Coach. I don't think that's by accident. I have hope for Perry, even though he's been softer than a marshmallow. I think Perry is still growing as a player - i think he will show improvement on both ends of the floor this year, and will probably lead us in scoring. Hopefully, the defense gets better.
This just in : Misery is being picked preseason as the 12th place team in the SEC. 12th ... in the SEC. Stop laughing !
@Crimsonorblue22 Big Government went on a panty raid...
@jaybate-1.0 Spewed the coffee on Lao Tse remark....lolol...
@drgnslayr Jamari piled up the fouls last year, and I anticipate Cliff will have a learning curve on that as well. Hopefully, better perimeter defense will cut down on those drives to the basket that put all our big men at risk of foul trouble last year. Frank HAS to make his free throws, as it was all downhill after the Dook game ( 14 out of 16 the first two games of the year, 58% the rest of the way). I like the "bruiser" option as a stark contrast to last year, and wouldn't be the least surprised to see that lineup, at certain times, in every game. Maybe it's just me, but I think we'll be adding Devonte to this list at some point this season.
@jaybate-1.0 Spewed the coffee on Lao Tse remark....lolol...
@Crimsonorblue22 "do you always have to be so... So weird?!!!!"
Jaybate is like going to a chinese buffet - you fill your plate with items you like, and you pass over the "octopus surprise dish". Rat foreskin smack talk is 'octopus surprise'... lol.
BTW, the Crimson/Jaybate back and forth is the best on the board, imho.
@Crimsonorblue22 The Rockets are the team I claim, although my son lives and breathes Rocket basketball, and he's not sure that Tarik makes it. I would LOVE for him to make the cut because he's simply a great person and a talented player as well.
National championship. I think we have all the tools necessary for a title. We will be back to our usual perch among the nation's best defensive crews, and our offense will have multiple weapons. We should be a better ball handling team, with much better passing than last year. The sky is the limit with this group.
@jaybate-1.0
"Traylor says he’s been pushed most by freshman Kelly Oubre, whose 7-foot-2 wingspan has created numerous steals and deflections."
Added Selden: “I’m up there. I’m not quite to where (Traylor and Oubre) are with it, because they’re all over the place.”
That speaks volumes about Oubre. We all knew Jamari was the "energizer bunny", but to have a freshman be recognized for hustle by the team veterans ... well, it means when Kelly talks about defense like this ...
“I take pride in defense. Taking pride in defense ... that’s what every team needs,” Oubre said. “Teams win championships on the defensive end. I use defense to push start the rest of my game, to get my intensity level up, to get myself hyped. Getting stops ... it’s a great feeling.”
... he means what he says. I absolutely love this kid. What a great addition.
@JayHawkFanToo Like I said, a sweating pig.
@Crimsonorblue22 Marshall is a mid-major coach at a mid-major job. The jealousy is enormous, which spurs this sweating pig to mouth off about "KU ducking him", and call us names, like "chicken hawks". Every few decades, the Shlockers are relevant, and this huge chip on their shoulder towards KU comes out. I remember in the 80s ( when WSU was good), the talk was " KU is ducking us". An inferiority complex is an ugly thing in basketball. Think Misery Tigger fans. Think KSU Mildcat fans. Add Marshall and Shlocker fans to the list.
@joeloveshawks i normally steer clear of conversations about Sherron. What I know to be true is he was instrumental in helping us win a national championship, he was a leader on our team for years, he decided to return his senior year in order to help our team win another national championship, and he should be lauded for his great contributions to KU BB. I will leave my analysis to the good things we all love and cherish about Sherron.
@drgnslayr And that, imo, is the entire crux of our problem. Eastern Kentucky. Yes, I said it. Eastern Kentucky. The team that shredded Naadir, ate Frank's sack lunch, and almost pulled an upset of Norfolk St proportions. That powerhouse university that I had actually never heard of before they almost beat us. That game was an epiphany game, a summation of our perimeter game since 2008 ( TT's great half year excluded). We have had the best thoroughbreds in the college game in the post being fed by nags on the way to the glue factory. It's why I click my heels three times every time Devonte is mentioned.
@Crimsonorblue22 he,he,he....
@jaybate-1.0 Love the out of the box post. I was thinking Swee (or should we drop all the formalities, and just start calling him Chandler?), with some intense work, would look "Swee"t at the 2, towering over every opponent. I am sure we will see Wayne at pg on occasion, though it certainly won't be permanent. On another note, I have tried to say Svi's name, and can't do without developing a mini- lisp, so I will be referring to him as Swee. Now, if he decides to pay us a visit, and objects to my liberal pronunciation, then I will forced to bite the bullet, and "say and spray". Until then, he's Swee to me.
@nuleafjhawk The magic words...ding,ding,ding...WE HAVE A WINNER!
@jaybate-1.0 I was waiting for the " we're going to give Conor a try at the 5" talk. That has to be next, right?
