Bates is probably still an NBA player. But he shouldn't have played one second of college ball. Huge mistake by daddy.
He's also a fresh 18, so I think most of his measurables will improve (minus reach lol).
I would take him in a heart beat if he decided he wanted to try playing somewhere besides Memphis...
@BeddieKU23 I think the flip side of this argument is that it forces the other team's 5 to guard away from the basket.
In games where Dave is the best big man on the floor, obviously this isn't the best strategy.
In games like UK (or Oregon or USC) where the opponent's big man is giving it to you regardless of who is guarding him, AND clogging up the lane with a long wingspan, you should just play 5 out. Pull that big guy out of the lane and open up the ability to drive for the other guards. Just front the post on defense, force the lob, and double on the catch.
How does that Oregon game change if you play Josh at the 5, and pull Bell away from the hoop? I'm not sure he is able to just hang out at the rim and swat our shots all game long. To me, it is really the only counter a 4 guard team with a weak spot at the 5 has against superior athleticism.

The way Wilson is playing right now he needs 30 mpg. Especially with how poor of a rebounder Dave is at times. But I do think there is some logic to playing him at the 5 for a least a few stretches.
When you've gone on a 5 minute scoring drought, how do we not put in a 5 guard lineup? Change the tempo. Change the pressure on D. Force the other team to either have a 5 man on a guard or change their lineup.
We have the guys to be able to do that, but we haven't seen it basically all season.

If we had to roll out TGF or Enaruna last night I'm not sure you are saying the same thing today.
Ultimately, though, take away how well Harris, Wilson and Yesufu played. Dave was 16 points better than their big men and was able to stay on the floor for 31 minutes while being productive. If you can get 80% of that from Dave, most games will be wins regardless of the guard/wing rotation. Between Harris, Braun, Wilson, JCL, Och, Yes, and Remy our guards are going to score. The 5 has been the weakest spot all season. When Dave shows up, we win games relatively easily (see WVU & @ OSU). When Dave sucks, the game is tight. He has sucked a lot this season, but last night he didn't.
There are 15-20 mpg for Joe (providing the Remy situation continues down the path I think it is). Which is all I think he should get. Not asking him to start over Harris. But there are 7ish minutes for him at PG and another 7ish playing 2 guards. I think there should hopefully be a few games he plays 25 because he's 3-4 from deep and Bill rides the hot hand. Might come at a sacrifice for CB's or JCL's minutes, but that's the benefit of having a microwave on the bench.
Bobby needs to be moved to emergency minutes only.

@tundrahok I was sad to see him go. I think Self does great with wings (see CB/Och/Wigs/Rush/BMac/Releford/Oubre/Henry) and that’s why I think he would have done well here in the end.
But JCL was an upgrade for this year, no doubt

One of Udoka's greatest attributes is that he completely understood his abilities and didn't really try to dribble much.
I still can see the one time he got a steal at half court and had to dribble down to dunk it.
