I was at the gym getting a good workout in and turned on Game 7 of the NBA finals 1984. Magic/ Bird, Kareem, Parrish, Mchale, et al. I was able to pay close attention to about a quarter of the game and noticed a few things.

1. ALL the players were tall and skinny. All of them. Not one seemed to weigh more than 100KG/220lbs.

2. I saw a lot of the hi-lo game being played and not as much of the pick and roll/ pick and pop. Sure it was there but not to the extent that it is today.

Question 1, When did basketball gain so much muscle?? Was it during the Karl Malone years or the Shaq years? Magic was a stick figure compared to Lebron. So was Kareem and Bird.
What gives?

Question 2. When did the NBA game transition to more pick and roll type stuff? The game I speak of above was tied 30-30 after the first quarter so it doesnt seem like the Pick and Roll stuff worked to increase the offensive production.

@bskeet Yes, except for the 08 team. They blew out other teams by 20+ on a regular basis. Their point differential by seasons end was +20.5 or something crazy like that.

@Crimsonorblue22 Good, I was confused yesterday when I was looking at tickets for the UK/KU game, which are exorbitant by the way, but the student sections were marked on the side lines and GA was behind the baskets, I thought it was weird.

I noticed you had lots of games scored in the 60's for KU. It wouldnt surprize me a ton but I am still curious why the scores wouldnt be higher considering the rule changes. Especially since KU has had such a head start on getting them down pat. 30 seconds will seem like a millennia to our boys and could be a bit too fast for some of our competitors. More turnovers for KU, more transition run out points for KU, higher scoring.

Another opinion of mine, I think Harvard has a real chance to upset us. Anyone remember the Princeton game back in ummmmm December of 2011? Big snow on the ground, close close game but KU pulls out the W by the skin of their teeth. Harvard has that same kind of feel to me.
ANd finally, KU is going to steamroll UK when they come to AFH!! Take no prisoners! Give no mercy! Double digit win for KU. Kensuckys green and freshmen team will be shell shocked by the noise level in AFH! Major time for revenge.

ANother question. Is the student sections in AFH still at both ends of the court behind the baskets?

@JayHawkFanToo I used to think that too. However, "stretch 4's" are in pretty high demand lately in the NBA. Golden State won the title with 2 of them in the starting line up and were outsized by most everyone they played.
Perry is a pretty darn good stretch 4. He'll make a team. I'll put money on it.

@Kcmatt7 who knows. Its possible he goes if we have a stellar season. Its also possible he comes back for one more season. I think its too early to say, but its fun to talk about.

@jaybate-1.0 I agree Jaybate. We had 7 guys leave in 08 and we still won the conference, won more than 30 games, and got to the sweet 16 if Im not mistaken. Turn over comes, turn over goes. The only constant is KU Basketball. Its almost more of a constant that taxes and death.

@jaybate-1.0 Kentucky isnt a footer stack this season. Wisconsin lost their best big man. UNC is going to be uber talented and experienced but not a footer on that team. Duke? I dont think so either, although they will be tough again. LSU should challenge UK for the SEC crown with their class.
What we do know is that the trio of Lucas, Mickelson and Ellis were able to beat two teams with plural footers. Plural 7+ footers at that. So any team that has a footer this year, should be old hat to KU by then. They can handle it. They have proven that they can handle a grueling 8 games in 10 days and wont give in even while running on fumes.
I say bring it. Im sure KU says bring it. They can and will beat teams with footers again next season.

@Statmachine Great article. it seems JoJo may have given him some inspiration. Either that or he is just another tall kid from Mali who loves to play the game and does not have a single ounce of primadonna in him. Kid is all heart and all motor. He better be tough skinned though cuz Coach Self will treat him like a marine or navy recruit going into boot camp. First, they break you down mentally and physically then they build you up. If he can handle the pressure Coach puts on him, he has a chance to have a better season at KU than JOJO did.
