Modified the OP based on newest info that I have.

Yeah, there are definitely some technicalities while trying to find the illegality in all of this. If someone wants you to pay you to do something, normally that is called employment. The difference is when it is a public official, then it turns into bribery. Zion could certainly accept money from Adidas right now if he wanted to and there is nothing illegal about it. It would mean he would lose his amateur status and not be allowed to partake in NCAA athletics though. If he were to hide this from the NCAA and still end up playing but then gets caught, it would not be illegal meaning he could go to jail or be fined, but it would be against NCAA rules and the institution would be the one penalized by the NCAA.

Notice that the athlete that received the $100k in the FBI investigation findings was not one of the people that was arrested. The adidas rep that paid the athlete was arrested because he also paid the college coaches and government money likely has gone to these colleges in one way or another.

Of course it would also be illegal to accept the money and not pay Uncle Sam his cut.

This is some craziness. So @BeddieKU23 thinks Moore is keeping some of the Guard recruits from committing. Sadly I think it could be right. However, come on man, if you are Dotson or Grimes how can you be scared of competing against a vertically challenged guy that was barely in the top 100? I'm not trying to knock Moore, its just fact. If these recruits really fancy themselves as NBA caliber players, they are going to have to compete against others much better than Moore to make it. If they decide to take Easy Street and not challenge themselves along the way I'm thinking there will be a rude awakening one day.

So if the hypothesis is true, how come it doesn't seem to apply to the big men? De Souza has committed, Big Dave seems to be ready to do the same, it didn't seem to bother them. There is much more room at the guard spot, meaning less returning players and Self has shown he will mostly play three guards and even 4 at a time if his personnel dictates it. It seems like an illogical conclusion to reach but nobody ever said logic would decide where these kids choose to go.

Immanuel Quickley making his announcement tomorrow at 6:00pm. This has been viewed to be a heavy heavy heavy lean for UK for a loooong time. It will either be KU or UK. While small, I do think KU has a chance. He officially visited UK last weekend. Norm was in town to visit with him today. This is an Adidas kid, not sure if it matters in this case but never know. Its a big piece off the board, we shall find out soon.

Whiff City • Sep 22, 2017 01:28 AM

Jerry Meyer said on twitter that the reason for all of the David McCormack CB picks in the last two days was "Intel getting out." When asked if it was reliable intel he responded saying "Guess we will find out. Reliable to me but reliable enough to me to change my pick to Kansas. Wouldn't say intel if thought unreliable."

Good stuff.

Whiff City • Sep 22, 2017 12:34 AM

I hope Dotson will look at his college choice as a business decision. One program is way more likely than the other to be always be in the national spotlight, likely being ranked top 5 most of the year, conference champions, consideration for #1 seed, poised for a final 4 run, etc. And with all of that comes mega publicity. Being the quarterback of that team puts him front and center of that spotlight. When you are basically auditioning yourself to get a job at the next level, you should want to be on the big stage.

Whiff City • Sep 21, 2017 01:02 PM

KU Picked up two CB picks for Immanuel Quickley yesterday too. Hmmm.

Whiff City • Sep 20, 2017 08:58 PM

@jayballer54 Jerry Meyer is pretty legit, I pay attention to what he picks as he usually makes his own decisions vs just seeing what everyone else does and doing the same thing. This is certainly a good sign.

Whiff City • Sep 20, 2017 08:12 PM

@jayballer54 Three in a row. A few more guys followed with picks for McCormack to KU. Chad Lykins and Dain Ervin. Wonder what they all heard/saw that made them submit the picks.

Whiff City • Sep 20, 2017 04:53 PM

@jayballer54 Florida coaches meeting with DD again today at school as well as in-home. Sounds like an all out blitz.

Ok so lets see if new recruiting thread • Sep 19, 2017 05:45 PM

A few notes from today:

Norm Roberts is planning to see Devon Dotson later today.

I'm hearing KU is definitely in the mix for Romeo Langford, much more than most people may currently think they are. Langford is visiting with Roy Williams today for an in-home visit.

Grimes is meeting with the entire Marquette staff again today. Grimes official visit to Texas is this coming weekend.

There is an article on the rivals site for KU updating status of Grimes and Dotson but I'm not a subscriber, if anyone else is it would be nice if you could let us know if there is anything good in there.

Whiff City • Sep 18, 2017 01:47 AM

David McCormack schedules official visit to OK St. for Oct. 14th per reports.

Whiff City • Sep 14, 2017 12:29 AM

I have some concerns about the recent developments too. Things are heating up for sure. Definitely some plusses and minuses.

Losing Zion G to ISU stinks, was hoping he would make it to late night. Great signing by them not letting him off campus without the commit.

Zion W coming to late night is big big big. Would be awesome to land him. He will be a superstar.

David McCormack - i think KU is in a good spot, sounds like a decision might be nearing. This would solitify the post if he picked KU.

The most important piece in my opinion is Dotson. We need guards badly, real badly. He would be a cornerstone on the team. The guy is a stud and reminds me of Frank how he gets into the lane at will. I havent seen anything to suggest he is Florida bound, he hasnt even made it to his visit yet. Not sure where that came from but makes me nervous nonetheless.

Seeing Grimes go to Kentucky when he was supposed to be at KU is concerning for sure. As previously pointed out, the KU visit was unofficial so if there is any saving grace to hold onto that might be it.

I have wondered, in Dotson's comments he said Self told him he is the best PG in the country, what did Grimes think of that? On the same token, Grimes just said Self told him he is their top priority right now. What does Dotson and Zion think about that? I hope everybody is mature enough to understand that there is some salesmanship going on here. I just hope that it doesnt make it seem like Self isnt a straight shooter. Dont want him to lose credibility over these various comments.

Devon Dotson's visit to UF this weekend has been cancelled.

Late Night - Sept. 30th • Sep 05, 2017 01:37 PM

I've put together a list of 2018 recruits coming for Late Night in the Phog on Sept. 30th, thought it would be nice to have it all in one place. Its always a huge recruiting weekend for KU and I expect that we will land at least one of them if not on the visit but very soon after. Here's the list I have:

#2 Zion Williamson (SF)

~~#18 Quentin Grimes (PG)~~ - At Kentucky this weekend, rescheduled KU for Oct. 13th weekend

42 David McCormack (C ) - Committed to KU

~~#50 Jalen Carey (PG)~~

~~#60 Zion Griffin (PF)~~ - Signed with ISU

Anybody else I'm missing?

Ok so lets see if new recruiting thread • Aug 30, 2017 05:17 PM

Wow, just read some quotes from SDS about his visit and why he committed and they were some awesome and powerful words. He really fell in love with KU and that makes me like him even more.

Ok so lets see if new recruiting thread • Aug 30, 2017 05:13 PM

Well how about that for timing, there is the first domino! Wow, that's a big commitment that really wasn't on the radar until Friday. Amazing.

Ok so lets see if new recruiting thread • Aug 30, 2017 03:45 PM

@jayballer54 Still here and still checking in, just hasn't been much to talk about lately. Seems like this recruiting season has dragged on a bit. Once KU lands its first commitment there will be a lot more chatter going on I hope.

Ok so lets see if new recruiting thread • Aug 29, 2017 02:07 AM

Finally something on Dotson. Maybe someone can post the link, i'm not very good with that stuff but the article I read said he thought the visit went well. He and Silvio watched the boxing fight at Self's house with some of the players on the team. Biggest highlights of the article:

  1. Self told him that he thinks he is the best PG in the nation and he is their priority.
  2. Dotson and De Sousa were talking about possibly teaming up and playing together next year and thought it would be fun.
  3. Sadly, Dotson has a new visit scheduled, going to Univ. of Florida on Sept. 8th weekend.
  4. Expects to make a decision prior to basketball season.
Ok so lets see if new recruiting thread • Aug 27, 2017 02:24 PM

Sounds like Self hosted Dotson and De Souza at his home at some point yesterday. Haven't heard many other details of the visit yet though.

Jalen Hoard to Wake Forest

Ok so lets see if new recruiting thread • Aug 23, 2017 02:34 PM

Also, saw somewhere that Dotson has a scheduled visit this weekend at KU, could we see our first big commit of the year in just a few days from now? I hope so!

Ok so lets see if new recruiting thread • Aug 23, 2017 02:17 PM

@BeddieKU23 No Zion Griffin, hmm

What About Mitchell? • Aug 22, 2017 04:32 PM

HighEliteMajor said:

There is this chance, possibly, that Robinson came here and didn't like it. That Self wanted him to come. But Robinson just didn't want to come to Kansas.

Yep, you are correct. I believe the general consensus viewpoint of the recruiting world doesn't think that was the case because on his first day of his visit he tweeted "Kansas is nice."

Ok so lets see if new recruiting thread • Aug 17, 2017 01:26 PM

I get the feeling from some of his retweets that he doesn't want to wait an extra year to get his big payday. I've never been in that position so its hard to say how I would react if I was in his shoes, it has to be tough. I will say though, I was a college athlete (many years ago) and my college years were definitely some of the best years of my life. Staying an extra year in college would be far from a terrible option in my opinion.

Training for one year while being a practice guy at UNO will probably be the quickest and best way to get that big payday. However, putting in his time, developing his game, playing against top level competition at KU every day will delay the first big payday at least a year but can give him a better chance at sticking in the NBA and getting that 2nd and 3rd big payday. If he goes early I hope he makes it, its always sad to see guys go early and end up cut in a year or two.

Ok so lets see if new recruiting thread • Aug 17, 2017 02:14 AM

So Matt Scott says the reports of the UNO visit were false. Eric Bossi just posted that the visit just wrapped up, i.e. that it happened with a decision expected soon. This one is hard to keep up with.

@BShark

He could be satisfying his mother's wish by taking the visit to NO considering how close it is from home. Without trying to read too much from this its hard not to judge his actions to date

This is exactly what I was thinking. Maybe something like this happened "Mama, I've made my decision and I am going to go to KU. I'm committing for two years and it will mean an extra year in college before going to the NBA because I'm giving them my word."

"Ok, I'll support you but before you make your decision final, would you at least take a look at the local school just down the street? Please? Do it for me. This way at least you can say that you fairly considered all of the options before making this big decision in your life."

"Ok fine, I'll call coach Self and let him know what is going on and will take the visit to UNO."

Lol, just speculating but based on all of the insider tips that were floating around it would fit with the actions he is taking. Perhaps I'm just trying to cling on to any hope I can. Either way, it sure has been quite the rollercoaster.

Ok so lets see if new recruiting thread • Aug 15, 2017 07:51 PM

@BeddieKU23 do you think the sources are reliable? I'm seeing nothing to make me think he is moving towards that decision.

Ok so lets see if new recruiting thread • Aug 14, 2017 02:07 AM

Just saw that about Bagley too. Does Duke even have an open scholly? Curious if anyone knows what their situation is.

What About Mitchell? • Aug 13, 2017 03:33 PM

I feel it is important to settle this right now. Mitch will definitely get a lot of minutes this year.

So you are saying we will have a lot of blowout victories. Hope you are right.

Ok so lets see if new recruiting thread • Aug 10, 2017 01:49 PM

@Statmachine I think the last condition is the one in question, did he receive aid during summer school? Then, if he did, it can't be that much. I wonder if paying it back could be a condition to get his eligibility back for this year. May be a stretch but never know.

Ok so lets see if new recruiting thread • Aug 09, 2017 08:45 PM

There has been a lot of momentum towards KU with many different high level players. Its fun to imagine, but what if all of the planets aligned and all of the real possibilities for KU end up happening AND our underclassmen remain vs going pro. Our team could look like the list below in 2018.

Moore, Grimes, Dotson, Garrett, Vick, Cunliffe, KJ Lawson, Zion Williamson, Lightfoot, D. Lawson, Preston, Dok, Mitchell Robinson

Its obvious that this will never happen but it seems like some of these recruits are an either/or situation. OR, Self knows that some of our returning guys are likely gone. I didn't include Newman either because it is pretty much accepted that this year will be his last at KU barring serious injury.

The common thought is that we definitely are pursuing Dotson & Grimes and one is not dependent on the other, meaning there is room for both in addition to Moore. The tea leaves tell me this means Self believes Vick is gone.

The situation with the big men appears more complex. This one feels like maybe Self thinks the odds of getting Zion aren't very high. The catch with this is that the decision from Mitchell Robinson has to be made by Aug 31 so he can't make it a conditional offer based on Zion's decision. Seems to me like it will need to be one or the other and might put Self in a tough spot.

Ok so lets see if new recruiting thread • Aug 09, 2017 02:22 AM

@jayballer54 yeah, Dotson having a solid game. Showing an all around skill. Speed, ball handling, passing, rebounding, and hit a nice three. I like it.

Did you happen to notice who Steph has been sitting next to?

2018 Recruiting Thread • Aug 08, 2017 08:03 PM

Dotson to KU gets me real excited, I really like everything I see about him so far. I hope KU seals the deal soon. Also, for anyone interested, I saw somewhere that he will be on national TV tonight on ESPNU at 9:00 eastern time.

2018 Recruiting Thread • Aug 08, 2017 05:47 PM

@BShark Just picked up another CB pick for Dotson to KU by some Arizona insider (Jason Scheer).

2018 Recruiting Thread • Aug 08, 2017 12:40 PM

@BeddieKU23 Nice! He does play on the Adidas circuit and has said he likes playing with Dotson a lot and that they have discussed going to the same school.

VIDEO FROM YESTERDAY"S SCRIMMAGE • Jun 07, 2017 06:45 PM

@Kcmatt7 Somewhat agree with you. Seems to me like Svi's issue has been translating from practice (or workouts) to actually doing it in the game. There were so many times last year where I expected more from a kid that was a 3rd year player in the program. Even if Vick is slightly less impactful on the offensive end but his defense is much better, I'd give Vick the nod if I was Self. Just feels like Svi is improving slowly while Vick has shown improvement at a rapid pace. If their trajectories remain on the same path, Vick will likely be the better player this year.

Being a former college athlete I have seen players like Svi before, where they can be great in practice but when the lights are on and the crowd is in the seats, etc, they seem to underperform. Actually, I have seen the opposite much more often. There are some players that when its a live game situation, a switch gets flipped inside them and they are just gamers.

VIDEO FROM YESTERDAY"S SCRIMMAGE • Jun 07, 2017 03:38 PM

@Kcmatt7 Vick looked great, hit a lot of threes in that video. I'm guessing he starts over Svi.

Frank Mason's KU Goodbye Letter • May 25, 2017 04:58 PM

Wow, what an amazing article and an even more amazing person Frank is. That was very touching. He is certainly one of my favorite Jayhawks of all time. I'm not an NBA fan but whatever team drafts him might become my favorite team and I might have to start watching a few games.

Transfer talk • May 15, 2017 12:23 PM

It does seem too coincidental that Svi and Coleby have similar decision timelines. It smells like they are connected. The odd part is that they don't play the same position. Im intrigued by the Tilmon hypothesis, that would actually make more sense.

@BShark
I suspect there could be a Greyson Allen effect going on. Maybe kids just don't want to have him as their teammate. I certainly wouldn't want to go to Duke if I knew he was going to be back on the team. Knox goes elsewhere, Duval taking a looong look at his options and not committing to what most think is a certain pick for him.

Lawson Family • May 04, 2017 07:46 PM

@JayHawkFanToo the "demotion" actually resulted in a salary increase.

Carlton Bragg to Arizona State • May 03, 2017 10:50 PM

The trade for Sam Cunliffe has now been completed.

@Kcmatt7 Keep the insider info coming my friend! We know things can change quickly but its nice to get the info either way. Helps pass the time until the season starts!

KU's Next BBall coach - a game! • Apr 28, 2017 12:48 AM

Lets just go double legacy and hire Tyler Self as the next coach in 20 yrs when Bill retires with his 10th NC.

Ed Werder gone, only 10 years later than it should have happened..

KU's Next BBall coach - a game! • Apr 26, 2017 01:04 PM

@KUSTEVE right, but its not what they have done right now, its what they would have done just prior to Self leaving which could be more than 10 years from now. So if Self retires in 10 years (just using for purposes of discussion) then the most likely candidates will be the ones who have lots of success in 8-9 years from now. There is still plenty of time for Danny to build a resume worthy of being KU's head coach.

Allen to Nebraska • Apr 26, 2017 02:37 AM

@BShark I agree. But i think there was one more domino... I bet Self was told by Duval that he wasn't coming to KU, then Moore had next priority, he accepted leaving no spot for Allen.

KU's Next BBall coach - a game! • Apr 26, 2017 02:34 AM
