Colorado St. 67 - Virginia 42

Other bball games • Mar 20, 2024 03:12 AM

And Virginia finally reached 40 points for the game!

Other bball games • Mar 20, 2024 03:09 AM

Virginia getting absolutely embarrassed by Colorado St. in a First Four game losing by 26 with a little over 2 minutes left and still haven't even scored 40 points yet.

Samford predictions? • Mar 20, 2024 03:05 AM

I predict we'll score more points than Virginia has so far tonight. Only at 38 points with 4 minutes left in the game.

Bracket chat • Mar 20, 2024 12:15 AM

Just don't lose to Samford amd keep our longest in the country streak of winning a first round game alive and I'll be fine with whatever else happens this tournament.

Bracket chat • Mar 19, 2024 09:49 PM

@jayballer67 That was the belief about the Big 12 tournament as well and KU shit the bed when they had no pressure on them.

Bracket chat • Mar 19, 2024 08:48 PM

One thing about our bracket that makes it hard to predict is there are a few schools and coaches that have historically underachieved in the NCAA Tournament. Purdue, Tennessee, and Texas have all historically been upset prone. We could definitely throw KU into that mix as well as Gonzaga.

@Texas-Hawk-10 I’m hearing the players are saying they don’t want to play either

That's fine, let it be like bowl season in football where players can choose to opt out. That still lets younger players and bench guys get some real game time that haven’t gotten all season.

@Texas-Hawk-10 If you believe the PR machine. Fields has proven to be a bad qb and it seems the market reflects it.

There's also been multiple reporters confirming Chicago had better offers on the table for Fields, but wanted to do right by Fields and send him to a good situation. Sitting behind Russell Wislon for a year isn't a terrible spot to be in.

Bracket chat • Mar 18, 2024 03:52 AM

Several teams chose to opt out of the NIT in favor of focusing on recruiting. Teams include St. John's, Indiana, Oklahoma, Memphis, Pitt, and Ole Miss. Feel bad for the kids would could've used this extra practice and game time to get better or get some minutes that wouldn't normally play.

If recruiting is the real reason, then the NCAA needs to looking at recruiting windows and probably adjust the portal windows to not allow any player to enter until after the completion of the NCAA Tournament.

Of current players I agree, I only focused on the high school class that has two really talented guards

I'd rather take Love or Nunn over their incoming freshmen at this point because each of them is a proven commodity at a high level team amd fills a desperate need of 3 point shooting that their incoming freshmen wouldn't be guaranteed to fill. I also think that's more likely than getting the freshmen to flip who would instead likely follow Drew to Louisville.

Lunardi got 4 matchups correct this year! Out of the big 32 games. Two were 1-16 matchups and two were 2-15 matchups. The dude is a genius!

That's not how the accuracy of Bracketologists are measured. I'm necessarily defending Lunardi here, but if you're to critique his accuracy, at least understand how that's determined and measure based on that, not your own criteria.

KU women receive an 8 seed and will play Michigan in the 1st round. If they win that one, they will likely play JuJu Watkins and USC in the second round.

@KirkIsMyHinrich any data on 3pt percentage on neutral courts

Samford's only neutral court games this season were their conference tournament games.

In those 3 games, they were 10-24, 6-21, and 5-18. So they were 21-63 for 33.3% on neutral courts this season.

Bracket chat • Mar 17, 2024 10:55 PM

Any chances we have at making a run entirely depend on how healthy McCullar and Dickinson are. If those two are reasonably healthy, KU should win despite getting the highest NET ranked 13 seed. If Dickinson amd McCullar are both still injured or don't play, it becomes significantly harder.

I view this similar how I viewed the Charlie Weis hire here. If you weren't good enough to win when you had nearly unlimited resources, how are you going to win without many resources?

2024 NFL Offseason - FAs, Trades, Draft • Mar 17, 2024 08:13 PM

@dylans That wasn't their best offer and taking the best offer wasn't the goal. They were trying to get Fields into the best situation for him and sitting a year behind Wilson in Pittsburgh is what was determined to be best for Fields.

2024 Coaching Carousel • Mar 17, 2024 08:11 PM

@BeddieKU23 Personally, I'd be trying to pry Langston Love or Jayden Nunn away personally since both are proven shooters at the P5 level.

2024 NCAA Automatic Qualifiers • Mar 17, 2024 06:02 PM

Yale won the Ivy League in a crazy ending over Brown. Brown had 2 FT's while up 1 with 10 seconds left. Brown bricked both FT's and fouled Yale with 6 seconds left because they had a foul to give. Yale looked like they weren't going to get a clean look, but they found a guy wide open at the rim who flipped it in at the buzzer to give Yale a 1 point victory.

2024 NCAA Automatic Qualifiers • Mar 17, 2024 01:40 PM

To give an idea on how much chaos happened on the bubble yesterday, the First Four games are played between the 4 lowest ranked at-large teams. Those games are typically between 11 seeds going on to play a 6 seed, this year though, they will be 10 seeds going on to play 7 seeds.

Joe Lunardi is also apparently ignoring a tournament guideline of trying to avoid rematch early on in the NCAA Tournament because he has KU matched up against Yale in a 4/13 game. KU has already played and beaten Yale this season in December.

2024 NCAA Automatic Qualifiers • Mar 17, 2024 02:54 AM

So many upsets this year in the conference tournaments. UConn is the only 1 seed in a major conference to win their conference tournament. Only 9 teams so far out of the 32 conferences have won their conference tournaments as a 1 seed. There will only be a maximum of 10 regular season conference champs also winning their conference tournaments this year. I don't know if there's ever been a year like that before.

Here's the list of 1 seeds that actually won their conference tournaments: Vermont (America East), UConn (Big East), Charleston (CAA), Oakland (Horizon), Colgate (Patriot), Grambling (SWAC), Samford (Southern), South Dakota St. (Summit), St. Mary's (WCC). Grand Canyon could join this list tonight if they win the WAC title game.

2024 NCAA Automatic Qualifiers • Mar 17, 2024 02:39 AM

Lots of bubble action today. The AAC champs will steal a bid, the A10 champs will steal a bid, NC State is stealing a bid, New Mexico is stealing a bid.

FAU losing to Temple shrinks the bubble.

And New Mexico about to beat SDSU locks them into the field.

2024 NCAA Automatic Qualifiers • Mar 16, 2024 11:31 PM

Bubble Watch action:

Texas A&M may have cost themselves a bid by blowing an 18 point lead against Florida.

FAU is currently losing to Temple in an AAC semifinal. FAU is the only at large team in the AAC so them losing shrinks the bubble.

SDSU and New Mexico are in a dogfight for the MWC title. New Mexico is one of the last 4 in so a loss may well knock them out.

Xavier Henry

See my comment on the other post, Brady missed the 1st semester that year because of his DUI as well so it wasn't like there was a real decision to made at that time over who to start.

@Crimsonorblue22 said in Tourney hopes:

Would Baylor want Tang? He's done some weird stuff.

If Drew does take the Louisville job, Tang would absolutely be their first call because of his familiarity with the program and being a strong religious person. He'd also be their best bet to prevent a mass exodus of players as well.

I know Tang isn't happy with KSU's administration over the "F-KU" chants and how they handled the Nae'Qwan Tomlin situation so Tang would also take that jib in a heartbeat.

Tourney hopes • Mar 16, 2024 07:47 PM

@Crimsonorblue22 said in Tourney hopes:

Is ksu in or out? Miss state/Auburn getting testy. Don't care for either coach! Jans is creepy.

KSU is done and so is Mississippi St. after their loss as well. Bubble teams/bid stealers still playing are Texas A&M and NC State. New Mexico could also burst a bubble if they beat San Diego St. in the MWC title game as well.

The Pac 12 title game tonight is likely a winner's in and loser's out situation as Colorado and Oregon are both bubble teams. Colorado would be better for bubble teams though as they are in the Last 4 In on most projections while Oregon is in the Last 4 Out/Next 4 Out in most projections.

@kjayhawks said in Roy:

@wissox that team may have got undefeated had Drew stayed but it’s the new norm unfortunately. A guy on X thinks if Udeh and Dick stayed we have 2 loses this season. I think I agree with that, have Dick over Timberlake and Udeh instead of Braun.

If Gradey stayed, we also don't have Furphy.

@nuleafjhawk said in Tourney hopes:

This won't be a popular statement, but it's my honest opinion.
That we are a 4 seed is an abomination ro the game. There is no way we should be higher than a 13 seed.

This is an awful college basketball team.

You know 13 seed don't make the NCAA Tournament unless they win their conference tournaments right?

Roy • Mar 16, 2024 02:54 PM

@dylans I'm going to agree with @BShark that bad luck with injuries likely cost Roy 2 titles in 1997 and 2003. We likely beat Arizona with a healthy team. I know Haase played with a broken wrist, but wasn't Pollard also playing injured in that game?

And then in 2003, nobody can convince me KU doesn't win that game if Wayne Simien plays in that game.

Other bball games • Mar 16, 2024 04:53 AM

Colorado just beat Washington St. to advance to the Pac 12 title game against Oregon. That's a game that all bubble teams will be watching since Oregon will be looking to steal a bid.

The ACC title game will be huge for the bubble as well as NC State could steal a bid as well if they win against UNC.

The American semifinals are also going to be worth watching as FAU is the only at large team in that league. If they lose, that's another bid steal. Regular season champs USF might be 24-6, but have not played a Quad 1 game all season and have 2 Quad 4 losses along with a NET ranking of 78.

Other bball games • Mar 16, 2024 03:16 AM

@wissox said in Other bball games:

Generally conference tournament results don't matter that much.

Depends. Conference tournament results are going to be the reason UNC gets tge 4th 1 seed this year since they're the only contender to reach their conference tournament championship game. It also very much matters for bubble teams as they want to make a run to take themselves put of harms way of the bid stealing teams that inevitably win some of the mid major tournaments.

Other bball games • Mar 16, 2024 03:14 AM

@wissox said in Other bball games:

Arizona about to lose to Oregon....maybe

Every bubble team will be cheering for Washington St. to win the final Pac 12 title as Oregon is a bid stealer and Colorado is a bubble team.

@Gorilla72 Kentucky's defense is so, so bad. I'd hate to see what these boards would be like if our defense was that bad.

2024 Coaching Carousel • Mar 15, 2024 11:52 PM

This won't cover every coaching opening, but I'll try to list out the major conference jobs that are available or have already been filled.

The major conference job openings currently available/recently filled in alphabetical order are:

DePaul: Hired former Ohio St. coach Chris Holtmann, this job is the equivalent of the KU football job prior to Leipold. They haven't made an NCAA Tournament in 20 years and have only had 3 winning seasons in the last 20 years.

Louisville

Michigan

Ohio St.

Oklahoma St.

Stanford

Washington

West Virginia

Two big names off the table as of today are Nate Oats who is signing an extension with Alabama that will make him a top 5 paid coach in all of college basketball and South Carolina coach Lamont Paris who was a common name to tied to a lot of big openings as he also signed an extension with South Carolina today.

Out of the available jobs, Louisville is by far the best opening because they are a basketball first school in a basketball obsessed part of the country. Current Baylor coach Scott Drew is their top choice rumors are there's mutual interest.

Ohio St. and Michigan are in the same tier of job where you can win big at those schools and contend for Final Four's and national titles, but you will also never be the biggest deal on campus. In some ways, that can work to a coaches advantage as it means there's a little less pressure than a place like Louisville, but it also means you don't have the same level of resources either.

FAU coach Dusty May is rumored to the front runner for the Ohio St. job.

Some names to look out for with the Michigan job include Amir Abdur-Rahim from South Florida who won the AAC regular season title this year, Tony Bennett from Virginia whose roots are in the Big 10, Dayton's Anthony Grant, Colorado St. coach Niko Medved, OU's Porter Moser

Oklahoma St. will probably be looking to the mid major ranks based on them having to pay $15 million in buyouts to Boynton's staff.

West Virginia is about the same caliber of job as Oklahoma St. WVU sounds like they're going big game hunting with this search which hasn't always panned out with the school in past coaching searches.

Washington is in an interesting position as they transition to the Big 10. This is a school that's in an area that has quite a bit of talent and has been Final Four caliber in the not to distant past. The two names most connected to this opening are Utah State's Danny Sprinkle who is considered the front runner and BYU's Mark Pope. An interesting dark horse candidate here is Washington State's Kyle Smith which isn't as insane a thought as before now that the two school's will be in difference conferences.

Stanford is going to become an even tougher job now that they're moving the ACC. Kyle Smith is rumored to be an option there as Stanford in the ACC will still be a better job going forward than Washington St. in the WCC is.

Vanderbilt is up there with DePaul in terms of being a very difficult place to win due to academic restrictions and the conference they're located in.

Other major conference jobs that are rumored to potentially be coming available this cycle are Oregon and Florida St. Oregon is reportedly thinking of moving on from Dana Altman after this will be his 3rd straight season of missing the NCAA Tournament. Leonard Hamilton is 75 and FSU has slipped considerably the past 3 seasons. Neither of those jobs is guaranteed to come open at this point, just rumors they potentially could come open. If they do, Oregon would be in the same tier of job as Michigan and Ohio St. and Florida St. would likely be in the same tier as Oklahoma St. and West Virginia.
