Tennessee is getting absolutely destroyed at halftime by Mississippi St. Bulldogs are doubling up the Vols 38-19 at halftime. This would be absolutely huge for seeding as Tennessee is currently the front runner for the 4th 1 seed over UNC and Arizona.

Not sure about this premise who would we keep? We're obligated to keep players aren't we? Self just can't yank a scholarship from Elmarko because he's been a disappointment, right?
If it were something that we could decide whom to keep, would keep all of them. First half of the season muy bueno, 2nd half, mainly tied into injuries, no bueno. Still not our greatest team ever at full strength, but I'd be looking to add a piece so overwhelmed guys like Braun, Timberlake aren't needed except for spare moments.
Well you would never hear that was the reason he would take his scholarship anyways they would find another reason if Staff didn't want him back. Scholarships are on a year by year bases Self wouldn't have to keep him on Scholarship if there was conflict or many reasons they could find not to extend it for the following yr I think.
If you pull a kid's scholarship simply because the player underperformed, that absolutely destroys a coaches reputation in recruiting. In those situations, coaches will always help a player find another school first which is what Self does. It's easier now with the portal, but even if player finds out their scholarship isn't being renewed, that message will get out and spread quickly as well.
In theory, if someone like Elmarko decided to return to KU, and never put his name in the portal, but his scholarship was not renewed, that's a bad look. Also in theory, If Elmarko put his name in the portal and KU fills out their roster, and then Elmarko decided he'd rather return, then he'd be out of luck and it wouldn't be a bad look for KU because everyone did things the proper way and Elmarko would be out of luck on returning which has happened before as well to other players waiting for offers they thought would come, but never did.
The A-10 Tournament has been absolutely wild so far with all 4 top 4 seeds losing in the quarterfinals. That means the A-10 will be a multiple bid league this season as Dayton was the only school that was a lock going into that tournament.

Very much doubt it. Our seed will likely depend on McCullar and Dickinson's health. We'll likely be a 4 seed at best.
8 Creighton lost to Providence in a Big East quarterfinal.
Duke's in trouble against NC State.

@DanR said in Short Handed Hawks vs Cincy Game Thread:
Why keep bring up Morris? He shouldn't have been here.We didn't lose that POS
I'm not seeing anyone here saying he should still be a part of this team, but his bad decisions off the court are a central part of KU's issues on the court this season whether you like it or not.
@approxinfinity said in Short Handed Hawks vs Cincy Game Thread:
@Texas-Hawk-10 yeah thats a valid point. But you can only have so many guys that cant shoot. And when you lose one or two of the few that could then you are screwed.
That's the point. Losing Morris changed so much about this team. He was an elite level defender on the same level as Harris and McCullar and was the guy on offense that could break a defender down and go get his own shot.
Losing that piece meant that KU was sticking a below average defender and player who needs the ball in his hands to fill that role of off ball guard. This altered KU's defensive plans because having 4 very good to elite defenders would've covered Dickinson's deficiencies much better and would've created much better spacing on offense.
@approxinfinity said in Short Handed Hawks vs Cincy Game Thread:
Not sure why you bring Elmarko here with 20-20 hindsight. Nothing wrong with Juan playing big minutes, thats where i disagree with you @kuballin10 . But Elmarko cant shoot, and Nick has been a headcase.
Elmarko wasn't brought in with the intentions of starting. He was brought in as a potential OAD who could lead the second unit and potentially play some alongside Harris. The Morris situation more than anything else is what screwed this team over from a composition standpoint.

I didn't say he was, I said I wish he would step up into that role because he plays with an edge and is as an asshole at times and this team needs that.
Self doesn't care about the Big 12 Tournament and never has. Was hoping the players would be playing free and loose knowing there's not really an option behind them.
This group just has no killer instinct in them and that's really the biggest downfall of Harris with this group. He's the leader, but his quiet and passive personality has rubbed off as the personality of this team. I'd love to see Hunter step up as the leader next year and have the team take on his personality and play with an edge.
@jayballer67 KU just needs to get out of the game healthy more than anything else. Self's clearly not worried about winning anything this week as he's never cared much about the B12 Tournament.

Hopefully, the MRI is correct and there is no labral tear. Unfortunately, there can be false negatives, meaning that the MRI says it is fine, when there is actually a tear. If the labrum is actually intact, then he has long-standing laxity of the ligaments, which increases the likelihood of a dislocation or subluxation (partial dislocation) happening again.
I pray that the treatment he receives helps to strengthen the muscles around the joint enough so it provides stability to his shoulder and does not affect the mechanics of his shot in the short-term if he feels confident enough to play. I see too many people suffering the after-effects of an injury in their youth wishing they had taken better of themselves. If I had a nickel for every time I hear that “getting old is not for sissies” or “the golden years are not so golden” I’d be rich.
I am not an orthopedist or sports medicine guru. Just sharing the information I gathered by reading various articles off the NIH site.
I'm going to trust that the doctors treating Hunter are competent and giving Bill accurate information.
@dylans Plenty of football players only miss a couple of plays with dislocated shoulders because it was just the joint popping out with no other damage. It sounds like this is the case with Dickinson where it was just the joint popping out with no other damage so Dickinson with almost 2 weeks of rest should be fine for the NCAA Tournament.
@jayballer67 Go back and look at Porter's shooting numbers again. 42% isn't his 3 point shooting, that's his overall shooting percentage. His 3 point percentage is under 30%. His 2 point shooting percentage was 48%.
We don't need and shouldn't want a 6-11 big man that took 14 shots per game at a 42% clip.

The dude that plays for Texas - where did he come in form again? - oh ya Oral Roberts - - Pepperdine - -Oral Robets- - - Oral Robets- -- Pepperdine. Hmmm
The difference between Max Abmas at ORU and Porter at Pepperdine is team also success. Abmas took ORU to a pair of NCAA Tournaments including the Sweet 16 in 2021 while Pepperdine has had 4 winning seasons total since the last time they made the NCAA Tournament in 2002.
@patoh3 It depends on the severity of the dislocation. If he didn't damage much and he can play through the pain, it's possible he could play in the NCAA Tournament. Self did update that trainers were able to pop his shoulder back into place in the locker room which is an encouraging sign this may not be a significant injury.
The info Hunter needs first though is the current severity of the injury, the risk making the injury worse by playing through it, and his range of motion while playing through it. Until Hunter has his MRI, we won't know.

It will be interesting. The committee allegedly looks at wins — quad 1 wins and quad 2 etc.
How do they look at losses and how do they compare losses to wins?
That is unclear to me. I don’t think I’ve heard it discussed, however I will concede that as a KU fan I’ve never had to really pay attention to discussions about losses.
Caliber of losses is a factor, but not the only factor. NET rankings matter, conference finish matters, how a team is playing matters, injuries matter, Quad 1 wins matter.
For KU, the health of McCullar and Dickinson will be also be a factor. If Dickinson's dislocated shoulder is season ending, then KU may drop as low as a 5 seed, but right now they're a 3 seed.

@Texas-Hawk-10 Living in Kansas, I just can't get over the KState loss, for which I somewhat unfairly blame Cole. Really, I have a lingering anger/frustration due to Jason Bean getting hurt on the QB option the previous game(TX Tech) and KU not being able to play an experienced QB against KState. I don't have any confidence that Jalon's back issues will be 100% resolved this year and hope we have better QBs to back him up as opposed to a walk-on freshman. Not having Jalon or Jason for all of the Texas Tech and KState games still stings. It seems likely we will need three QBs again this year.
Good thing KU won't have a walk-on freshman backing up Daniels next season.

Big difference between signed, then de-committed when a better offer came along and played 4 seasons at a low major school.
KU's spring practice will be over by the point that window opens, nobody that could realistically brought in would be a better option than Ballard or Marshall as a back up for Daniels.
Just imagine the meltdown @kjayhawks would have had if he was a Kentucky or Duke fan 3 years ago when they went 9-16 (Kentucky) or 13-11 (Duke) and neither made the NCAA Tournament, or a UNC fan 4 years ago when they went 14-19?
@stoptheflop Considering what we saw out of Cole Ballard last season and the potential of incoming freshman Isaiah Marshall, I don't think KU really needs to look for a QB in the portal.
Even if we didn't have Daniels coming back, I'd be optimistic about KU's prospects next season with just Ballard at QB.
Personally, I'd roll with Dainels as the starter, Ballard as the back up, and redshirt Marshall. You could still dress Marshall every game and give him some mop up duty in 4 games to get him some experience and if something happens to Daniels, then you move Marshall to back up use someone else as the mop up duty back up to preserve Marshall's redshirt.

One can point finger at roster buildup but injuries are out of Self's control.
Roster build up this season was also Self partially taking the brunt of the NCAA sanctions this season.
We now wait on the results of Dickinson's MRI to see how much time he'll miss with his dislocated shoulder. Personally, I'd sit him and McCullar for the Big 12 Tournament to give KU its best shot at making any kind of run the NCAA Tournament.
@kjayhawks said in Cougar chat:
@FarmerJayhawk can it get any worse? Like I said we disposing 40 year records here
Also, our worst season in 20 seasons under Self is going to result in a 3 or 4 seed in the NCAA Tournament.
Since Self has been hired here, this year will likely be only our third 10+ loss season under Self. During that same span of time, Kentucky has lost 10+ games 13 times, including 5 under Calipari. UNC has had 10 seasons of 10+ losses since Roy went home (8 under Roy, 2 under Davis). Duke has also only had 3 10+ loss seasons since the time Self was hired at Kansas. However, all 3 of those programs have missed at least 1 NCAA Tournament in that time frame and Kentucky and UNC have had losing seasons in that time.
How many programs would love to consider a year like this the worst season in 25 years for their school? Hell, KU has only had 5 10+ loss seasons total since we won the 1988 title. Only Duke can make that same claim, but for them, two of those seasons resulted in missing the NCAA Tournament completely and one losing season. It's been over 40 seasons now since KU last had a losing record for a season.
@kjayhawks said in Cougar chat:
@FarmerJayhawk can it get any worse? Like I said we disposing 40 year records here
Keep in mind that KU is also dealing with fallout from NCAA punishment that Self basically took the brunt of this season in regards to the scholarship reductions. I'm not sure how the NCAA views the Morris situation in regards to his scholarship counting towards that number this season or not, but now KU has 3 more years to fulfill that punishment of 1 or 2 more scholarship losses for a season. So we play with 12 scholarship players for either 1 or 2 of the next 3 seasons. Self will be able to build depth going forward unlike this season.

@jayballer67 Hell no, not even as a back up. 42% FG and sub 30% from 3 as a high volume shooter. This kid can't shoot but is trigger happy. There's a reason why he is at Pepperdine with the lineage he has.
ok , breathe easy there guy, just asking-- it's gonna be ok
I'm not against going to low or mid majors for portal guys because I think the majority of our portal guys this off season will come from that level, but Porter sucks and wouldn’t help KU in any way.
A starting line up next season of Harris, McNeely, Furphy, Adams, and Dickinson with a bench rotation of Philon at the 1/2 spots, a portal wing, and Bidunga in the paint is a strong 8 man rotation.
I wouldn't be upset if Clemence got his act together enough this season for Self to keep him as back up because he'd likely a better option than anyone else as a back up big next season.
The issue with the portal for KU this offseason is going to be finding guys that don't mind coming in and being back ups because that's most likely what KU is going to offer kids. This is where you have find kids that fit this make up of the team next season without being significant downgrades because these are mostly going to be mid and low major players that want to fill those roles.
If McNeely ends up elsewhere and if rumors of Scott Drew to Louisville end up being true, Baylor's got a couple players that I'd be working hard to convince to come to Lawrence. Langston Love or Jayden Nunn would be great gets in that situation as both are light out shooters who can play off the ball.
With Harris, Adams, and Dickinson back, the other two starting spots have to go to guys who can stretch the floor to create spacing for Adams and Dickinson to run tge high low properly.
@jayballer67 Hell no, not even as a back up. 42% FG and sub 30% from 3 as a high volume shooter. This kid can't shoot but is trigger happy. There's a reason why he is at Pepperdine with the lineage he has.
@MR11 KU is very likely going to finish 5th or 6th in the Big 12 regular season standings. That's not deserving of a 1 seed under any circumstances.
But, for the sake of argument, let's use your logic for KU jumping the SEC regular season champs in seeding. Let's say they do lose to Kentucky and then their first round SEC Tournament game to Texas A&M, Miss. St., or LSU which are the 3 teams they're most likely to face. That puts them a 8 losses. They've already lost to A&M and MSU so it's plausible.
So let's say KU does hypothetically jump Tennessee because of their head to head win in the 3rd place game in Maui. Using that same logic, justify to me how Kansas jumps Marquette because you're logic for jumping Tennessee doesn't hold up when trying to justify being ahead of Marquette since Marquette has a head to head win against Kansas that came a day before that Tennessee Game.
The selection committee values regular season championships which is why KU has lost quite a few early round Big 13 Tournament games and still gotten a 1 seed.

Some Juan’s problem is our lack of consistent shooters, I really thought he could be a 10 and 10 type of guy if he was aggressive enough. If him and Hunter are both returning we have to get guys that can shoot the ball at the 2 and 3 spot. Then we will be very dangerous.
LJ Cryer is a 2, not a 1. Even at Baylor, he was their 2. He's never averages more than 2.1 assists per game in his career. Jamal Shead is UH's point guard

KU entered that tournament with 9 losses. The 10th loss was the Stanford game.
@RockkChalkk said in Beat Silo Tech! Lets save this season:
I disagree that they have zero chance at a one seed. The chances are very small and very unlikely but there is a scenario where it could happen. If they play like they did last night the rest of the way and win convincingly over Houston then stack a few more great wins in the Big 12 tourney, Iowa St and Houston again. They would be 3-0 against Houston, Beat Tennessee, Beat UConn, Beat Kentucky, and probably have the most Q1 wins in the country. Committee could definitely consider the KM injury to minimize some of the losses. Couple all this with bad showings from others looking to get the #1s by early losses in their tournaments, I definitely think it is not a zero chance. Though, its not much higher than zero, lol.
Any researchers out there want to look up the most losses a #1 seed has ever had? Curious to know that answer.
Total number of losses is a flawed way to determine seeding. KU got a 1 seed with 7 losses last season over other teams on the 2 line with fewer losses because of their overall resume amd computer rankings. KU doesn't have those advantages.
This year, KU is ranked too low in the computer rankings and other metrics used to seed teams to have any realistic shot at a 1 seed. Houston, UConn, and Purdue already have 1 seeds locked up leaving just 1 left. There's too many teams with better overall resumes than KU such as Arizona, Tennessee, Marquette, Iowa St., and North Carolina that could all end up as the 4th 1 seed. Those are all teams that are going to win their conference or finish runner up to one the 1 seed locks.
Best case for KU at this point is going to be a 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament by winning out. The losing road record with losses to non tournament teams UCF, KSU, and WVU (a quad 3 loss) have really hurt KU's already not great computer numbers this year.
The committee isn't going to factor McCullar's injury much because our losses without him were to good teams. McCullar played in the losses to UCF, WVU, and KSU which are our 3 bad losses.
@MR11 said in Beat Silo Tech! Lets save this season:
@kjayhawks One thing to get excited for with the Houston game is that if we win it, I feel like we have an outside shot at the last #1 seed. Especially if the committee takes into account that Kev was out for a few losses. Winning out after that would likely put KU top 4 in q1 wins with the added bonus of 4-5 of those wins being against the top 5 of the NET.
KU has zero chance at a 1 seed this season.
