Agree with everything you said except this one point about Gonzaga who can lock down when they want to. Gonzaga is under the radar. Perfect position for a well coached, veteran and athletic team.

Gonzaga's defense is bad this year. Only Baylor has a worse ranked defense than Gonzaga among the top tournament teams.

I honestly get madder the longer I think about it. Both KU and Houston got beat by Double digits in the championship game of their conference. 17 Quad one wins to 7. KU also lost to a top 10 w/o their head coach.

And Houston was playing without their best player today.

Knower of ball Jay Wright picked us to make the FF.

Jay Wright picked KU to repeat, not just reach the Final Four. Seth Davis also picked KU to reach Houston which shouldn't be a shock because he's one of the most pro Kansas analysts out there.

Complain About KU's Unfair Bracket Thread • Mar 12, 2023 10:08 PM

I'm not even going to worry about UCLA at this point because there's some really good teams we'd have potentially play before then. Also, UCLA without Jaylen Clark is a lot less scary than with him. Also potentially missing Adem Bona is a blow to their depth. At this point, I don't think they get past Gonzaga.

I actually really like our draw for the most part, assuming McCullar can play. Arkansas is good enough to give KU issues, but they can't shoot worth a damn. None of their current rotation guys are even at 35% from 3 so keep them out of the paint on defense and force them to beat you from deep.

Illinois depends on two ex-Big 12 players that KU is going to be very familiar with in Terrance Shannon and Matt Mayer.

UConn doesn't scare me because they don't have a PG and KU's defense should be able to turn them over. Sanogo can cause issues for Kansas, but our backcourt should be able turn them over.

St. Mary's is who concerns me the most in this half of the region because of their defense and snail's pace of play. We don't play well at half court, slow down games and they can do that to KU.

As for the bottom half of the bracket, Jaylen Clark and possibly Bona is a bog deal for UCLA. Jacquez and Wilson will put on a damn show if they do play because those are two of the 5 best players in college basketball this season.

Gonzaga doesn't play much defense so KU should score and run with them.

We know TCU can give us fits since they did that twice including the blowout in AFH this season.

@dylans There's not really anyone with ties to KU that are impressive enough at this point to merit interest for a job the caliber of Kansas.

Mark Adams Resigns • Mar 09, 2023 02:48 AM

Adams has officially resigned from Tech.

2024 recruiting thread • Mar 08, 2023 07:04 PM

@benshawks08 Not a chance KJ plays extended minutes anywhere but the 5. Maybe spot minutes at the 4 like this season, but he does not have the shooting range to play outside in Self's 4 guard system for extended stretches, especially if the other big next to him is also exclusively a post scorer.

As far as transfers go, Self has to bring in a high level scoring 3 or 4 and even then, KU is still going to be largely dependent on freshmen to fill the scoring void KU is going to have next season. And if that pisses someone on the team off, that's good because it'll either motivate them to get better and fill that void, or they leave and KU is rid of dead weight. Or Self deals with the growing pains of having an extremely young team that will struggle to score points and have some very rough nights next season.

That second option doesn't fit Self's MO of wanting to stay as old as possible though so I think it's much more likely that Self brings in at least one transfer and likely two transfer capable of starting at the 3 and 4 spots for next season.

Who would ever replace Self? • Mar 08, 2023 04:52 AM

@Crimsonorblue22 I don't see Miles or Vaughn going down to the college level. I don't really care that much if Self's successor has KU ties or not, I want a coach who who's going to win at a high level at KU.

There's not much on the KU tree right now to think that's a realistic option at this point.

2023 Transfer Portal • Mar 08, 2023 03:55 AM

The top transfer option has to be a big time scorer, preferably from a P5 school. And honestly, Tech doesn't have that available so none of their players would be the top of my list.

And without knowing what the transfer numbers will look like for KU, it has to be a minimum of two players with scholarship numbers for next season. If more end up transferring, then look at other options.

I'm not talking about Few, Wright or those coaches specifically, but people from their trees that have connections to those schools. Tommy Lloyd for example from the Mark Few tree. Scott Drew is another person also starting to develop an impressive coaching tree as well. This is why someone like Evan Manning could be an option someday. Played here and currently an assistant under Mark Few at Gonzaga. That's what I mean by connections to a current blue blood program.

Nobody thinks it would be a good idea to have a guy like Case taking first hand tutelage from CS be kind of a coach in waiting?

I like Case but if he is the plan I hope he would get some time as HC at another school first.

That shouldn't be a prerequisite though. Roy came here with no head coaching experience and that turned out fine. Obviously that's not a guarantee of success, but a lack of head coaching experience shouldn't preclude someone either if they have other qualities.

There's not much out there now in regards to coaches with KU ties, either as a former player or coach out there. In the NBA, Jacque Vaughn and Aaron Miles are the possible options, Rex Walter's is in the NBA now, but struggled as a college coach at San Francisco. At the college level, Jeremy Case and Evan Manning are the only possible options at this point. Tad Boyle and Jerod Haase haven't done enough in their current jobs to merit any serious consideration.

I'd say you find someone who has ties to any of the bluebloods because those are the people who are going to understand the pressure of coaching at a place like Kansas. That's part of why Roy worked despite having zero ties to KU prior. He came from a blue blood and understood what it takes to be successful at a blue blood program.

I would look for someone who has ties to a modern day blue blood like KU, UNC, Duke, Kentucky, Gonzaga, Arizona, UConn, Villanova, or another program that's had a lot of success over the 30 or so years.

@Jethro ORU also has a former Jayhawk on tge roster. Isaac McBride who was here for his freshman season and was 2nd Team All-Summitt this season.

St. Mary's has a defense that can give KU fits and they play at a snail's pace. KU is a better team, but SMC could dirty that game up enough to give them a shot.

Did not realize we’d let them back in the door even if just for wrestling.

Affiliate membership for Olympic sports is common when a conference doesn’t have enough member schools for that sport so schools from several conferences will join under the banner of a conference to compete. It's not something unique to the Big 12 and Missouri isn't the only SEC school to have an affiliate membership in the Big 12 for an Olympic sport.

For wrestling, Air Force, Cal Baptist, Missouri, Northern Colorado, Northern Iowa, North Dakota St., South Dakota St., Utah Valley, and Wyoming all have affiliate Big 12 membership.

Alabama and Tennessee are affiliate members for women's rowing, and Denver and Fresno St. also have affiliate memberships in other sports as well.

He will now use this loss to get their attention for Big 12 tournament and NCAAs.

I see high amp next week, especially for semis and final game if KU reaches that far.

Self has never cared about the Big 12 tournament and his body language and subbing patterns during the tournament show that. As long as KU wins the first game, their seeding will be unaffected and you likely won't see an amped KU in the semi finals or finals unless it's KSU.

I'm never gonna think in any circumstances that's okay for people to think this or that cant be said because someone is white, or black, or yellow, or green, or blue. In the same manner that I'm never gonna think it's okay to assume a person of any color is a thug, or criminal, or what have you due to being whatever color that is. Bright Points From The Texas Game... • Mar 05, 2023 09:02 PM

@drgnslayr said in Bright Points From The Texas Game...:

Texas brought big fight to the game.

Three kinds of teams exist:

  1. Most teams - most teams roll over and submit to a team that brings big fight.

  2. Good teams - good teams bring a big fight back when facing a team with big fight.

  3. Great teams - great teams step up and bring even bigger fight than the team they are facing with big fight.

We played like most teams in that Texas game. We rolled over.

I hate to hear comments where players and coaches don't take on accountability for how they played. Yes, Texas brought fight. That isn't enough of a reason for them to win. We had to play the role of rolling over for it to work. We rolled over and lost. End of story.

KU had nothing on the line yesterday and it showed. This is hardly the first time a Bill Self KU team has no showed in this situation of playing a game that doesn't impact the Big 12 race or NCAA Tournament seeding. Self knows this and coached accordingly to his goals for the team. It's frustrating as a fan, but hardly the first time this has happened.

@cragarhawk You want a shovel for that hole you keep digging? You're not helping yourself with post. All it's doing is letting your cultural ignorance shine bright.

And I will absolutely say with 100% definitiveness as a white basketball coach that coaches a majority black team that there are words and phrases I cannot say without risking my job because of the racial undertones and connotations of certain phrases in the South. To not understand that because of having never lived or spent a significant amount of time in the South is one thing, but to dismiss it as a non-issue because it doesn't have a direct impact on you and your life is straight up ignorance on your part.

Mark Adams Resigns • Mar 05, 2023 07:02 PM

Ya the problem is people are looking for reasons. There's a difference between reciting that. And saying directly to a black or any color individual (this is not a race thing) "You're my slave, and I'm your master". Then? Absolutely

The idea that we've had such a dumbing down in the generations that people can no longer reason the difference there on their own without getting offended or canceling a syrup is just disturbing

This is an extremely tone deaf comment that shows your ignorance of southern history in the US and why Adams comments are problematic and why Aunt Jemima is problematic.

An older white man referring to master and slave to a young black man is extremely problematic because even if it wasn't intended in a racial context, it still shows incredibly poor cultural awareness on Adams part.

Aunt Jemima was also problematic because she was based on a minstrel show character. If you're not familiar with minstel shows, they frequently portrayed black characters, played by white people in blackface with extremely exaggerated features, in a very racist manner during the early years of the Jim Crow Era. Aunt Jemima was based on the "mammy" stereotype that was very common in these minstrel shows.

No we play the winner of the play in 9/10 I think it's either Texas Tech or Oklahoma

We play the 8/9 winner. Tech is the 9 seed and probably WVU as the 8 seed. I don't know the tiebreaker situation between WVU and OSU, but OSU has a double digit lead on Tech with under 10 to play so it's looking like that won't matter.

Today was not a good day to be a higher ranked team in the Big 12 or elsewhere. Marquette, Virginia, and Kentucky are the only ranked teams that won or didn't lose to a lower ranked team so far today.

Also, KU has a habit of playing like garbage the game after they clinch a Big 12 title if it's not a senior day game.

Big12 strength • Mar 04, 2023 07:25 PM

@wissox In football BYU has the strongest pedigree of the 4 schools although the 3 AAC schools have all made and won NY6 bowls and obviously Cincy was the non P5 program to break through and make the playoffs. From an on field perspective, the drop-off from OU and UT to those 4 isn't that much.

In basketball, Cincy and BYU have solid histories. Going into this season, Cincy is 11th in all time wins and BYU is 16th and I believe have the most tournament appearances without a Final Four. They were hurt by the move to the WCC from the MWC and should be a good program again pretty quickly in the B12. UCF basketball is the only turd of the group between the football and basketball programs of the 4 schools.

Bill Self for COY • Mar 04, 2023 06:10 PM

@drgnslayr I think a lot of it was he never found a system that worked for him at Texas and his team's were seemingly always on the younger side. He always had good recruiting classes (top 10 basically every year) and his system seemed fairly complex so he likely needed more experienced players than what he had so he likely needed to simplify his system to adapt, but never did so.

Speaking of new arenas, I didn't realize Baylor is also building a new basketball arena that is also downsizing from Ferrell Center. Ferrell Center has a capacity of a little over 10,000 and the new Foster Pavillion that's supposed seat about 7,000 and open in the spring of 2024. I love going to Waco, but getting rid of that many seats is going to drive up ticket prices significantly the way Moody Center did for UT tickets this year. The cheapest tickets for the KU game were going for over $200 until Wednesday when they lost out on the Big 12 title and are still going for about $175 today. Baylor will likely be similar and price a lot of Houston and DFW KU fans out of driving to Waco for those games.

Also, we don't have to worry about Fran calling our game today since he's in Waco for the ISU/Baylor game.

The realignment jazz has never been about power and prestige imo. It's always been about media markets. We win that battle with this one. Losing OKC and Austin, gaining Houston, Cincinnati, Salt lake and much of Utah, and parts of Florida.

We'll be fine. I think it's a NET gain in the longer term. Coming to this league will elevate those schools as well. Imo it definitely did for Baylor, TCU, TTU.
My next move would be to try to get Arizona, Arizona State, New Mexico, and Colorado back.

Guarantee the B1G didn't go get UCLA and USC for power and prestige. The got one of the largest TV markets in the nation with that move.

Expansion and realignment has been about different things for different leagues. New media markets has never been the top priority for the Big 12 because of the lack of an actual B12 network. This round for the Big 12 is about expanding the footprint to get Big 12 sports on networks from the first games of the day to the last games of the day.

Bill Self for COY • Mar 04, 2023 12:41 AM

Self absolutely deserves B12 COY, National COY I don't know about. Self should absolutely be in that conversation, but I think Shaka Smart might have my vote this year because of what Marquette has done compared to their expectations this season.

That's about it.

I think it's almost 100% certain that UCLA will be the 2 seed in our region. That doesn't bother me a bit. The only way that doesn't happen is if Purdue keeps losing, and plays their way to the 2 line. Then Purdue would be our number 2 because UCLA would be a number 1. I'm fine with that, too.

It would be great to get the #1 in the MW and play in KC.

KU would smoke UConn. They don't have a PG and our defense would eat them alive. UVA and St. Mary's are the potential 4/5 seeds that would worry me the most because of their defense and ability to slow a game to snails pace and force KU into a halfcourt game which isn't our strength.

If they put in an AC, they'll be able to use Allen Fieldhouse a lot more. So having high-end lighting for other events would be a good thing.

I wouldn't personally pick Iowa in a game over Houston, or Kentucky for that matter at this point, but that's the style of play that can give a team like Houston issues since they play so slow. That slow tempo can keeps lesser talented teams hanging around because a slower tempo means fewer possessions which means less margin for error for favored teams like Houston. If Houston gets into a game where they have a bad shooting night, their chances of winning go down much lower than if a team that plays at a faster tempo has an off shooting night.

Even without my selfish thoughts about getting him back...

Maybe I'm just really KU and most of the players just see it as an opportunity to go pro.

When I was at KU I had access to the floor at AFH most mornings and I took it. There wasn't enough NBA money worth what I would have experienced wearing the uniform and having that experience.

It's all about the $$$ now. That is all you can say. An extra year to possibly make more. Puke!

You are projecting your priorities onto Gradey when you're not in his position. It's easy for all of us who are alums and weren't high level athletes with pro sports level potential to tell someone to hang around and enjoy the college experience because none of us were HS POY's, none of us were McDonald's All-Americans, none of us were 5 star recruits, none of were projected lottery picks.

Basketball is a business and these players make business decisions about their futures. So Gradey Dick is going to make a business decision after this season that getting a guaranteed $20-30 million on a rookie contract is life changing money, even for someone who comes from a financially stable background.

Christian Braun grew up a die hard Jayhawk fan too and that still wasn't enough to get him to come back for his senior season once he was developed enough to be an NBA prospect, and he was never a potential lottery pick. I use Braun as the example because he grew up a die hard KU fan like Gradey and came from a financially stable background like Gradey amd still made a business decision.

Just to be clear, you are ALSO projecting your priorities onto Gradey when you are not in his position. You don’t know if the business and money are graders priorities any more than @drgnslayr knows his commitment to having a legacy as a jayhawk. If anything, @drgnslayr has more of an idea based on everything we’ve heard Gradey himself say. He’s talked about wanting to win a championship, wanting to leave his mark on the program. We’ve never heard him talk about finances or business as a motivating factor in any of his decision making.

You naught be right about making a business decision at the end of the year but he could just as easily make a decision based on other factors.

I'm actually not projecting my priorities onto Gradey. I'm looking at the trends of what history says based on what hundreds of other people in Gradey's position have done in the past. People in Gradey's position who are already projected lottery picks rarely maintain, let alone improve their draft stock by returning to school for another year which is why it's very rare for a player in that position to return to school.

Being a lottery pick means whatever team drafts or trades for Dick will have a significant financial incentive in helping Gradey continue his development as a player. If he returns and slips to the second round, that financial incentive is gone because a team no longer has to give Gradey a guaranteed contract and doesn't have the same financial incentive to maximize the chances of development.

My personal opinion is that I'd love to see Gradey back because his scoring abilities would be a huge asset to a team that's going to enter the off season with major question marks in that area next season, even more than this past off season. And Gradey is someone that could conceivably average 20+ next season because he'd have to carry the scoring load next season. If he succeeded in that, he very well could be a top 5 pick. But history says that's not likely what would end happening though.

@BeddieKU23 said in Kyle Cuffe:

There is actual talk of McCullar having a chance in this year's draft. He may go unsigned, but he's been gaining attention as of late where he might entice someone in the 2nd round or get one of those 2-way deals.

Has the Covid year to use so NIL could be a factor here along with potentially having an even bigger role on next season's team. Perhaps he gets feedback again that pushes him to grind another year?

I'm not expecting he returns at this point but would absolutely love if he did. I think this one will be worth monitoring.

I've seen McCullar generally rated somewhere in the 70's as far as draft prospects go so he is absolutely on the NBA's radar and I'm not arguing that he isn't or shouldn't be.

NIL is the game changer for players like McCullar. He'd likely get a Summer Leahue invite and a G-League deal, potentially 2-way deal. A 2-way deal is worth just over $500k regardless of how much time a player spends in the NBA or G-League now. McCullar's NIL deals at KU are likely not too far off of that so that's likely not a huge incentive. If he goes the Agbaji and Wilson route of improving his shooting and he gets his outside shot to around 35%, he likely becomes a late 1st round pick or early 2nd round pick similarto how Wilsonis projectedright now. If he sneaks into the end of 1st round, that's $3-4 million guaranteed for McCullar making it a much wiser decision to return. Even as a 2nd round pick, the rookie minimum is a little over $1 million still making that route the better option long term for McCullar than leaving after this season.

I absolutely believe McCullar should and will declare for the draft again this season and go through that process again and I will always advocate from that position. Scouts are going to love his rebounding and that he can guard multiple positions in the NBA. Guys like that though are a dime a dozen and usually bring some other skill set with them. What other skill does McCullar have that's NBA caliber? I don't see one with him now. If he develops his outside shot to get to 35% next season, suddenly he becomes a 3&D NBA caliber player.

Other games • Feb 24, 2023 06:51 PM

@drgnslayr Braun did test the waters after his sophomore year and the feedback he got was that he wasn't good enough to be drafted by the NBA at that point which is why he came back. As soon as Braun received the feedback that he would be drafted, even if he wasn't a lock to be a 1st round pick, he still left despite knowing 2023 would be a weaker draft than 2022 and having a chance to become a lottery pick. It's the same reason Jalen Wilson is still here, his feedback the last 2 years was that he wasn't good enough for the NBA. Gradey won't get that feedback. He's going to get the feedback that he will be a lottery pick and most likely a top 10 pick.

There's a non zero chance Gradey hurts his draft stock by coming back next season due to injury, lack of further development, the NCAA dropping a hammer on KU, KU being significantly worse team next season.

Even if Dick gets injured in the NBA next season due to the length of the season, that's an adjustment that every college to NBA player goes through when they they transition from playing 2 games a week for 5 months to playing 3-4 games per week for close to 7 months. The NBA also has better full time health care and trainers than college programs do that will help Gradey make that adjustment. I'd personally rather make that transition and adjustment knowing I have a guaranteed $20-30 million coming my way.

@BShark With Self talking about how important experience is, I can't see him willingly letting McCullar go. McCullar's rebounding and defense alone make him an invaluable piece for any Bill Self team, let alone next season when KU will be significantlylackingin experience. With McCullar not being an NBA prospect right now, he needs to come back and Self is who will give him the best chance at getting drafted in 2024. If he gets his outside shooting up to 35% next year, he'll be a draft pick.

@drgnslayr Houston absolutely has huge question marks. Even though they are top 10 in both offensive and defensive efficiency, they play at such a slow tempo that makes them vulnerable just like Virginia. I'm just using one example, but Jerry Palm currently has Kentucky/Iowa as the 8/9 match up for Houston. Iowa would be a problematic match up for Houston because that's a really good offense that plays at a high tempo. If they were able to get the game sped up, could Houston keep up offensively with someone like that?

Purdue's concern is talent. They're a good team, but they don't have top end talent like a Jaden Ivey. Teams with their roster construction don't win titles? When was the last time a team won a title without having a 1st round pick somewhere on their roster?

If there is anything that would make Gradey think twice (and its a longshot at best), it's the fact the 2024 draft class could be a historically bad one. A lot will change in 12 months from now but its already being talked about in this way.

Still not worth it because 2023 is very weak as well beyond the top 3.

I would be surprised if at least one Big12 team doesn't make the FF. Beyond that... it's anyone's game.

I also wouldn't be shocked if our teams flame out either. In 2021, the Big 12 sent 7 teams and only Baylor made it past the 1st weekend with 4 of the Big 12's 6 losses coming to lower seeded teams. Only Texas Tech and Oklahoma lost to higher seeded teams. Or it could be last season where the Big 12 sent 6 teams and only Baylor was upset and the league had 3 Sweet 16 teams. The other 4 losses came against higher seeded teams and included 9 seeded TCU taking 1 seed Arizona to OT and 11 seed ISU reaching the Sweet 16. Even Baylor's loss was to the runner ups who weren't playing like an 8 seed at that point.

The field is really wide open this year. Even the favorites have major weaknesses this year. Can Houston score enough points and are they battle tested enough in weaker than normal AAC? Alabama has the Brandon Miller case hovering over them. Is our offense good enough? Can Baylor's defense stop anyone? Can a Rick Barnes team make it past the weekend?

Bill shot from the hip yesterday on this. Basically said he wouldn't be playing anyway. Pretty sure Cuffe and Martin will be gone.

Cam Martin is the only player KU is losing based on eligibility as he is a super senior. Everyone else is eligible to return based solely on eligibility. With the incoming class a d loss of a scholarship, 4 players minimum will be leaving the program. We know Martin, Wilson, and Dick will be 3 of them. Cuffe seems like a strong candidate to transfer as does Zach Clemence at this point.

MJ Rice and Zuby will be interesting to keep and eye on as well. Will Rice be a Quentin Grimes situation of needing a fresh start elsewhere and if KJ Adams stays as the 5 long term for KU, combined with Udeh's development, does Zuby stay around as the third 5 when he's good enough to get big minutes at other P5 schools?

Also, with the recruits coming in, do Yesufu and Pettiford both stay? I could easily see one of those two transferring out as well. Pettiford has had injury issues each season and is a below average offensive player and Yesufu is a below average shooter who's never met a shot he didn't like which isn't a great combination. So do one of those two end up leaving as well with Jackson and Chris Johnson coming in likely both ready to play from day 1.

The scariest thing about next year for KU fans is going to be scoring. I could realistically see a starting 5 of Harris, Jackson, McCullar, Adams, amd Udeh which is it happened isn't scoring a lot of points. Scoring is absolutely going to be the biggest hole on this team next and needs to be the absolute top priority for Self this off-season amd hope it works out better than Remy did for 75% of the season. If not, this team could easily end up bottom half of the B12 next season.
