When we play with urgency and have Flory lurking for rebounds bad shots from 3 become not so bad
David putting the “good” in “feel good story”
Ok Rylan!
Rylan is year 2
Unpack your bags Rylen, please. It could be like this.
@dylans either way, its not anyone on our current staff, imo.
Things I thought were interesting:
* he said he needs to bring the energy and “bring everyone together” in terms or what he needed to do to earn more minutes
* appreciate that he said everything is a learning opportunity
* said he thought everyone is bought in that the season starts tomorrow and its 0-0.
* alluded to this helping him with a greater role next year.
Hope he stays. This was promising I thought, even if I think Bill has lost his mind.

@SlimShaddy54 i think this is misplaced. At least how i see it. I dont take shots at KJ. I take shots at Bill for playing KJ and Hunter over Bidunga.
@wissox yeah. We did recover and build into a championship team with kids who were freshman in 2004-2005.
I do think current Bill might have gotten the same out of that team (7 losses) but maybe one or 2 more. I wonder if that Bill would have lost this team as well. I know these are bookends to his career, but maybe leans in on the “same old Bill, not decline as the culprit” theory.
Ok so maybe i didnt frame the question right. 2004-2005 is the better comp. Same core.
@kjayhawks yep! An accurate comparison?
Under first year or under current Bill Self (including staff) in 2003-2004 Big 12 or current Big 12.
That team had 9 losses and were 5-5 in away games. Roster felt thin with a narrow trusted rotation, players were clearly not Self’s guys and offense sometimes felt one dimensional…
Also, those guys were hangovers from a deep run
Note: this should probably be 2004-2005 roster,
as @kjayhawks @wissox have brought to attention.
Too bad you guys werent in control of recruiting the students in your class. Just think how much you could have diminished the odds of a lemon class with that power :)
These are good points. Don’t want to take away from that. Helps with explanation of what we are seeing but culpability is a different animal, obviously.
The three big lineup was absolute bullshit. Nobody who wears crimson and blue wanted that. No one. Felt like Bill doubling down on some disciplinarian point, when everyone was tired of it. His reactions to these situations. His inability and unwillingness to compromise to salvage it, makes me feel like he is heavily considering retirement after this season.
@kjayhawks i mean thats true too. But we cant just kick kids off the team because they are underperforming
@kjayhawks thats insane
@SlimShaddy54 If nothing else, this weeks happenings should have Goff clearing the war room table and starting the search, be it now or next year. Gotta hit a homerun.
@nuleafjhawk lolol. not having gone to KU, people coming up to me random places and saying "Rock Chalk" when I started wearing KU swag caught me off guard. I think I fumbled out a couple "Oh. Thank you"s and got some weird looks. hahaha
I appreciate this @drgnslayr -- I never thought that Hunter was a team cancer, just that his recruitment was a mistake and his usage has been atrocious. This all comes back to Bill. But I appreciate your willingness to move past the "structure of the roster" blame, and focus on the bleeding edge of where Bill actually could right the ship if he met up with the ghost of Hunter S Thompson and tripped balls in Tijuana for a week, then came home.
Well. Maybe he isnt an ax murderer. I just say that for fun. But seriously, he could try to play defense.
@SlimShaddy54 this sounds like a self fulfilling prophecy, of course they play poorly if they lack confidence, motivation and cohesion
@dylans hopium! Lol, good stuff
@kjayhawks i think we are at a point where everyone is shook and has their hands dirty. How do you decide to punt AJ but not Rylen? It doesnt seem to be by attitude but by performance. I dont think we can do that.
Bill needs to play the right guys, and figure out how to look up into a 7’2 paul bunyanesque ax murderers eyes and convince him that becoming college basketballs most expensive practice player can be a positive experience for everyone.
On a more positive note, I hope Bill will join our Fishing thread when he hangs up the sneakers
Wait, KU played last night?
Humanity is still humanity. To assert that a younger generation is incapable of caring is silly, imo.
We chose the wrong guys and Bill is either incapable of, or too unmotivated to figure out what makes them tick and find their best selves.
Everyone is culpable. Bill, his staff, Goff, the players, the fans.
-1000 points for everyone!
Booooooooo!
@dylans ah my bad man! I just assumed it was the last 3 seasons. Let me go back and look.
I think my point is the last 3 points have been a rapid and sustained drop
I think the issue is more with conflicting opinions in our echo chamber. We want other people to hold Bill more accountable. Imo.
@dylans I mean, saying KU has 3 double digit loss seasons in the last 25 years is clearly warping the situation right? "This used car has run great 22 of the last 25 years!"
dah. ignore me. testing something. need to take the board down this offseason for real and upgrade it. want to bring drag and drop pictures back.
A hypothetical…
Go with me here…
Lets say Hunter were on an NBA team making any ungodly amount of money. Lets say that team didnt look like they had the record or the roster to compete and the season was near over.
They had young guys with talent on the bench who could likely help in future years.
Would that NBA team play Hunter? Or would they bench him regardless of the amount of money he was making?
We are at that point. Its time to pay Hunter to ride pine. Its what pros do.
Ive seen my share of authoritarian mindfuckery by coaches imposing their egos on kids from a position of power in travel sports. Now that poor coaches are armed with analytics, they will use the eye test when it suits them and analytics when it suits them, to back into a preordained conclusion while attempting to invalidate opposition and overwhelm it into submission.
Good coaches, on the other hand, strip away the how and get to the why that motivates everyone and validate it, and build from there. They do not lose the team. The team grants them authority because they earn it.
Im not seeing much of this happening the last 3 years at Kansas.
@DanR wheaties with honey? Or like how does it hold together? No issue with it flying apart when you cast it? Do they strike it quickly so it doesnt disintegrate in the water?
@dylans well i could buy a case of chicken livers and send em to you, they probably would just be more potent upon arrival.
@cajhwk welcome to the board!
Lol. I mean, its close to the real words and Tom Petty was a world class stoner.
@bskeet gonna glide down, down to manhattan, gonna lose to K State cuz we’re highhhh
Take heart guys. Savor the rarity of this ass whooping
Time to watch Landman. Looking forward to a new leaf whenever that is.
Wellp. You know youve hit rock bottom when we are losing by 34 and @kuballin10 is no where to be found. We are all on the same page more or less at this point.
I heard there is Shad, Perch, even Gar and Bowfin in the James. Havent ever caught anything in a river but looking forward to it this Spring. Oh, wrong thread. Defensive reflex.
Can you imagine doing a job you dont enjoy in front of hundreds of thousands of people for months?
Is that Bill hailing a cab? Oh coaching nm
I think i am just going to praise opposing teams players the rest of the way
Wow look at how their big boxes out and rebounds
I cannot hold my peace, Rakease!
Alright. I thought Bill would make it another year but now not so sure.
@DanR is that a vibe or sourced?
So like.. flory is still coming back right? Because i would be benching the fuck out of Hunter.
Im running out of things to complain about. Its just stunned silence
