Rylan has stepped out of bounds 4 times now when catching the ball on the wing
Wow, are these passes fools gold against Colorado? This is nice
KJ could def play some volleyball. Would be fun to see.
The ball definitely moves faster than these guys. Good thing to focus on.
Alright. More urgency on the offensive end. Quick passes.
Clean rip. Good try AJ
@benshawks08 this, yeah
Seeing a little bit of urgency on the defensive end
Bidunka
Just kidding.
@Texas-Hawk-10 @kjayhawks imo starting Dajuan Mayo Rylan Bidunga and Hunter gives us our best chance. We need scoring and defense to start and we can then morph into a defensive lineup if we build a lead to protect with Shak at the 1 or 2, and KJ as the other big alongside Flory.
All other lineups are liabilities imo, unless luck is on our side. There is no offensive oriented equivalent that doesnt blow donkey butt.
@wissox appreciate the encouragement, but i want to be able to wear my normal dude hat and not be an admin and Matt brought the energy and the debate. I am no doubt an instigator, but we stayed on the rails and got to a good place. All good here.
@SlimShaddy54 iām more of a career 75% rec league win percentage, kombucha guzzling cava munching dad. Iām fancy. But yeah, Im ok with being lumped with the beer guzzling hoagie muncher couch coaches. Its fine, forget I said anything.
@rockchalkjayhawk I mean we have kept it on the rails and civil. Im proud of us tbh, rough rough week for Kansas sports for sure
@nuleafjhawk lolol
Like him or loathe him Scheyer was running much of the show for years already before K stepped away
@Kcmatt7 said in If Billās roster falls apartā¦:
Though I think he did assist in the coaching search and had a lot to do with them getting Kleiman who has been pretty solid.
And theres the hook I am looking for, the bridge.
Peaceful transition of power.
I want Bill and Goff to figure out what that looks like before he is riding on fumes.
Goff has to keep Bill on task here.
@Kcmatt7 right. But my point is that people get tired of fizzling out in the tournament consistently.
We can revisit after year 5 I guess.
If Bill retains his roster next year and bolsters with a few good portal pieces there is a good chance we will not be having these conversations. Fingers crossed
@Crimsonorblue22 i think there were warning signs with Morris that were ignored, and there were other more proven D1 transfers than Timberlake we passed on. Not recruiting another big on that roster made no sense too.
had he recruited someone who could spell mccullar he wouldnt have needed to run him 34.2
I dont really understand how these arent questionable decisions, and how the head coach isnāt culpable, at least from the outside looking in, as we admittedly are.
@Kcmatt7 Barnes got fired for less ;) failed to make sweet 16 seven years in a row. but ok. Look at Texas now, right?
Thats a number. Thanks.
@Kcmatt7 all true, but next year will be 4 years if he has a dysfunctional roster.
@dylans solid take. Thanks for the financial perspective. I wonder how a stretch of 4 underwhelming years affects brand and valuation.
Maybe a better question. To @Kcmatt7 @Crimsonorblue22 too.
Total hypothetical here. Lets say Bill wants to coach for 15 more years with similar roster problems the whole time and tourney flame outs. Give me a number of years. How many? How many years of this does he get before he needs to be convinced it is time to hang it up?
We still had an underwhelming frontcourt @Crimsonorblue22 and didnt recruit to need there
@Crimsonorblue22 maybe pretty good? But who recruited a rapist and an underwhelming mid major player, and played Kevin 34.2 mpg?
You arent wrong, and its worth giving credit to the vision, but theres also some responsibility for the outcome.
@nuleafjhawk not even freshman bathwater. Old man transfer and upperclassmen bathwater.
@nuleafjhawk wouldnt this, by your description, make you more of a āpoor weather fanā? Ie you watch when the weather is poor outside?
@wissox this, last year, and the year before. Not that I am counting ;)
@Kcmatt7 your deep devotion to Bill is endearing. Dont change, bro.
@Kcmatt7 lol. Well done
@Kcmatt7 i dont have a shortlist. Iām sure others more knowledgeable about up and comers can assist there.
@Kcmatt7 i never said fire him, i never said he sucks or canāt coach. Those are your frustrations being projected.
Xās and Oās has never been a problem for Self.
This is about roster construction.
@Kcmatt7 Having a HOF coach who is stuck in his ways languish for 3 years as the landscape of college basketball shifts under his feet and most of his peers retire is hard.
These are not ānormalā times.
@Kcmatt7 are you being level headed right now? Lol
@Kcmatt7 i am still level headed, and yes, I chose my words carefully. Moving on has no implicit timeframe, firing is inmediate.
Why would I suspend you? I want to debate without getting derailed by these being troubled times. Lets continue, please.
@Kcmatt7 if you can refrain from calling me āreally fucking stupidā because I express an opinion different than yours it would be appreciated.
Also, I didnt say fire him. I said move on from him. Yes, theres a difference. If Goff gives him next year with another diminshed roster, he can still āmove onā, i.e. start thinking about life after Bill. Consider options, plan, figure out how to talk to Bill about it and have those conversations. I am in favor of Bill walking away on his own terms but in our 3rd consecutive down year, it becomes clear that he is having problems āleveling upā and navigating āthe back nineā, and if it causes our roster construction next year to again be weak, which is a large chunk of the problem, then we arent solving anything and its time to figure out a peaceful transition of power.
@Crimsonorblue22 ok.
@dylans well, I think youāve at times been partial to
comparing basketball to other jobs, right? So, if a remarkably consistent president of a company had 3 down years in a row, should he be given a 4th, when its clear he wont have what he needs to be successful for that 4th year?
Basically, my feeling is if we lose Flory or DP its time to move on from Bill. Sorry to say thats where I think we are. Next season is his swanās song, and only if he has a talented enough roster to do it āthe Bill wayā
In his interviews during the Iowa State game, Bill looked pretty defensive and irritated. Hope he was prepared for the heat to level up.
As others have said, I think Coachās staff appears to have some issues.
I wish instead of fully burning out and riding into the sunset, Self would have brought in brighter, hungrier, younger basketball minds and backseated more. He seems to have surrounded himself with old friends, and maybe people subservient to him and created an insulated workplace that has adjusted very poorly to the portal era.
Everything about the current roster construction, development, and performance says a level of cruise control from the top of the staff down. Bills health scare did make him calm down but that also may have translated to being less hungry and motivated to navigate uncharted portal waters and find a championship roster.
I believe at this point in his career, Bill Self is understandably more in love with his process than in winning. This might have kept the lights on and the family feeling, but it isnt going to compete at the highest level in an evolving marketplace.
Our saving grace will be the level of talent on next yearās roster. The staff has gold in Flory and DP, and has another potential first round talent in Elmarko.
Flory=Gandalf, The Wizard
DP=Aragorn, Return of the King
Elmarko=Frodo, The Ring Bearer
If we can retain this group, Elmarko can heal fully, and we fill out the rest of The Fellowship with amiable fellows, Self and Co may just defeat Sauron before sailing into the Undying Lands.
Let us hope.
@Texas-Hawk-10 I wish we had a well rounded player that was a leader. Is Peterson a leader? Who will be the floor leader next year?
I agree he will make a huge jump sophomore year if he stays, but I dont think this team has much chance of competing without Flory on the floor, so I would throw as many minutes at him as possible regardless of consistency. I disagree that game minutes wont help him. it would certainly help the team. I think they would help Flory. Its clear that we can lose to anyone with him playing 15 minutes. What have we got to lose?
Brutal.
@drgnslayr Cal would recruit over KJ and Dajuan in a heartbeat
I didnt watch a minute of this one tbh. Kid stuff going on. Was it a train wreck? Are we hanging the L on Self?
Is Storr definitely out next year? Seems like there is a road to redemption if he didnt salt the earth
āNo scenario where coach moves on from Huntā is insanity, given the historical success we have had on the defensive end under Self and how much of a liability he is on that end.
@kjayhawks exactly as i remember it. At the very least, espn should be aware that you typically read KU stuff and show it to you, while nefariously neglecting to show KU victory coverage to impartial audiences. Maybe theyāve corrected that. But i doubt it.
@nuleafjhawk was going for Beaucoup, similar
Thanks guys.
Regarding DP @BeddieKU23, is he a good enough handler to press break? Elmarko has the size and athleticism agreed, and I think I recall some nice passes, and some questionable ones.
I dont trust Diggy on ball in pressure situations, at least recently. It would be nice to know that the rock will be taken care of next year.
I am curious about Elmarko. Patellar tendon tear and .300 fg% and underwhelming contribution across the board in 18 mpg season 1 with KU leaves room for skepticism, certainly.
But he was a mcd aa, 19th overall in class.
Can we rehash a few things?
How was his fg% in HS?
Has he been working on his shooting and handling?
Will Bill use him on ball or off? I am assuming off mostly, as with Diggy, leaving room for stud transfer PG to be ball dominant.
Is that correct? Do Elmarko and Diggy need to handle to find their rhythm?
Any insights appreciated as Elmarko seems like a certainty on the roster next year and could be either obstruction or valuable piece.
@kuballin10 btw found another place where people are talking about coachās analysis of KJ, only slightly stale: https://www.reddit.com/r/jayhawks/comments/1i3zm23/bill_selfs_mystifying_analysis_of_kj_adams_the/ ā
