Jamari who? • Sep 27, 2022 03:54 AM

@BeddieKU23

I know watching a little tape is only a glimpse... but my takeaway from watching: Jamari moves with ease. His mechanics are not too complex and getting in his way. He's a player who should suck in coaching and turn it quickly into usable skills. Even says it on his scouting report: "runs and jumps with ease..."

Keeping that in mind... he looks like a player who would be smart to work hard on his crossover moves!

@BeddieKU23 said in Jamari who?:

Not sure you’ll find that tape since he went from unknown to Top 50 prospect in 6 months. Most of what I’ve seen is offensive highlights which isn’t uncommon for guards looking to get noticed. He’s got long arms, good size and is a plus athlete. It would certainly appear he has the tools to defend, same with his buddy Johnson.

I wonder if his skill level went up considerably in recent days... or... maybe he grew several inches. Maybe both.

I'm betting this is yet one more case where Self gets the jump on talent on the way up!

Jamari who? • Sep 25, 2022 05:56 PM

@AsadZ

I doubt if he's anything more than "potential" right now on D since early development is always offense.

But if we have a long guard with long arms, athletic, and full of energy it's mostly a matter of him buying in to Self. There are the exceptions, like Marcus Garrett.

Jamari who? • Sep 25, 2022 04:11 PM

Looks like we landed another Och-clone prototype player in Jamari McDowell.

He looks athletic, tall (I consider arm length a part of height), and definitely has a motor.

He is not ranked as an OAD, so if he fits here and develops we should have him for probably 3 years or so.

I gain hope in thinking the next few years will include us mimicking the great qualities of our NC team last year! Size with legs and pushing the ball!

Conference realignment • Sep 20, 2022 04:42 PM

So if the Kansas Board of Regents has to approve a conference move, and Carl Ice (member of KSU Foundation) is Vice Chair... does this mean we probably can't change conferences without taking our purple little brother with us?

Joe’s Donuts

Oh shizzzz! That's the name of the late night bakery. Joe's Donuts. On 9th Street, right? Do you remember the cross street... was it Indiana? Mmmmmm..... hot glazed!

@FarmerJayhawk

It's now called Pueblo Mexican Restaurant... but I think it changed names and ownership a while back because of being busted so many times for selling to minors.

@FarmerJayhawk

I have more than one scar from the Wheel. lol One from a fall. Those steps were pure ice!

Thanks for your post! Brought back some memories... Louise's was one of my spots, too. I lived at 23rd and Alabama... other side of campus.

My school days go back to the 70s... but I have had experiences there ever since.

I'm now thinking of that Mexican place on Iowa in the old Pizza Hut with the HUGE margaritas! They never carded kids so may have been closed down.

And that late-night bakery on 6th... open late... necessary stop for munchies!

I hardly recognized that list!

Fans need to know about places like The Wheel -

!thewheel.jpg ↗

Go on in and meet the infamous "Knobbie!" Great place to go before games!

This place is full of history... once the employer of John Riggins, and his long-time hangout even after his pro career.

Many infamous stories of Riggins around Lawrence, like at The Wheel... hauling full beer kegs over his shoulder, up the hill, carrying all the way from The Hawk.

You don't become an official "Wheel member" until you've had too much alcohol on an icy evening and slip down the concrete stairs.

I think there is a lot of potential with this thread... maybe someone spinoff a new thread and it's a tourist guide to Lawrence? I bet we can all contribute and make one heck of a source for those traveling to Lawrence for a game!

Anyone else interested in doing this? A combination of all our histories and experiences in Lawrence... relating to places still open today, including some newer places worthwhile.

Thoughts?

It seems to me to be extremely cruel punishment. We've had to live under the investigation cloud already for several years... and now punish us for something that is basically legal today. I know I'm repeating myself but.... Zion and Duke!

Am I reading this right?

"We are basically ending harsh penalties that punish today's players from past school affairs. No more long, drawn-out investigations. This will become law after we stretch out the Kansas decision and then penalize the f out of them!"

@Crimsonorblue22

I've learned the hard way to limit my expectation/interpretation comments.

NC Game thread analysis • Aug 30, 2022 02:45 PM

Watched the game again last night. Have not seen it for probably 3 months.

After the first half it made me think of when we thrashed UNC in the first half in 2008. I recall one of the tv guys was criticized for calling the game over early.

Sure was a fun team!

Eager for this year... it's time for the nation to experience a REPEAT!

@dylans

I had high grass near my garden. I'll make sure that is gone between now and next year!

Joe Dooley • Aug 27, 2022 01:04 PM

@Texas-Hawk-10

I don't like to be that pessimistic... but it is hard to deny the facts. Dooley could step in and assist in a huge way.

@dylans

Hey thanks! Good to know for next year. I think I'm about done for this year. Since they were so bad this year, am I likely to have them back next year?

@mayjay

Hahaha.... I'm usually not that optimistic. Especially this summer... since grasshoppers have eaten all my tomatoes! lol

Help with "NIL violations?"

I read that and the first thought I had was something positive about the NCAA. I thought they are trying to protect the athletes' rights concerning NIL violations (going to battle for the athletes when others were using their NIL rights without approval).

Ha.. I should have known better!

Joe Dooley • Aug 20, 2022 06:38 AM

What exactly is a recruiting coordinator? An assistant coach? Recruiting players directly?

Conference realignment • Aug 19, 2022 03:56 PM

I know it's about viewership and not geography... however... #1 and #2 are both really eastern conferences. Adding in UCLA and USC only gives them a touch outside the east.

I don't like being called "#3"... but is it that bad if we became the premiere conference for most of America that is NOT east?

I know... I know... Texas and Oklahoma aren't with us. I'll take some joy in watching them become irrelevant like Nebraska did... and Mizzou further.

This is starting to look like our political system... big electoral states... Ohio, Florida, Michigan... Texas.

Just to piss off Texas... I now consider them an "Eastern state!" lol

I'll be eating popcorn and watching the huge culture war go down between California and the Big10.

UCLA and USC, the perpetual pearls of the West Coast are just two irrelevant, hated teams in the Big10. Hope they choke on their money roll! My LA people are telling me they are receiving big time hate in their own backyard now. They better make a plan to recruit more enrollment overseas because many high school kids are changing their education plans.

@Texas-Hawk-10

For sure... Iowa was on my list to avoid, too.

I admit to not feeling comfortable playing Duke. I saw Williams starting to come on big and we didn't have an answer for him.

Yes... Backetology!

Time to look back. Pose some "what ifs."

Post anything you want about that tournament.... and then... I'm asking you to go deep in your consciousness: tell us what team you think was the biggest threat to us in this tournament. Would we squeek by them, or lose?

Bad matchups? Surely we need to go back and discuss Kentucky... how about Duke?

In case you forgot, I'm posting the bracket... I mean... backet!

Chris... Chris... Chris! Welcome! • Aug 10, 2022 08:34 PM

@jayballer67

I think we have a lot going for us right now.... not the least being the National Champion!

Self has done a great job adding wrinkles to our offense that give more opportunities for guards to either drive or knock down treys. Last year was great to watch and felt a bit like watching NBA... something I still watch regularly.

Chris... Chris... Chris! Welcome! • Aug 10, 2022 05:59 PM

I think Jeremy is a very social, high-energy, positive guy who knows how to communicate well and has an impeccable reputation. He represents the future of KU basketball... and we are damn lucky to have him!

Conference realignment • Aug 05, 2022 01:46 PM

I think the big white elephant in the room could be political/lifestyle differences.

Maybe this scrambling of conferences is good for our country? Maybe it helps establish more of a systemic integration?

For example... I'm worldly... lived abroad and travel extensively. Some of my Kansas friends have not had this fortune. Sometimes I see how it would help them to experience more of the world.

Does anyone else see this conference spaghetti as a cultural opportunity?

Chris... Chris... Chris! Welcome! • Aug 03, 2022 04:06 PM

This young man is a true competitor! I recall many players we have had that were very skillful but didn't have this off-the-charts competitiveness like Chris has.

A huge "WELCOME" to Chris Johnson!

Sure love his game and glad he will develop it further at Kansas!

So will college sports break down into political history followings?

Big10 - Union

SEC - Confederate

Conference realignment • Aug 02, 2022 02:30 PM

@FarmerJayhawk

It's hard to win me to go to any conference.... but your post here brings out my thumb pointing up! Thanks!

Conference realignment • Aug 02, 2022 01:19 AM

@FarmerJayhawk

So let me see if I have this correct... the academic reputation of our school will be determined by what conference we are in, which is being determined by sports media marketing wonks and their valuation of conference media contracts?

Conference realignment • Jul 31, 2022 01:39 PM

@Kcmatt7

We can pay the NCAA a few pennies for their NIL... lol

Conference realignment • Jul 30, 2022 01:54 AM

I got it. Let's just sign up all remaining teams that aren't in the Big10 or SEC... We'll form a 60-team conference and have more viewers than both of these conferences. All of our media will be built by Jay-Z. We'll figure out what we are doing later... lol

As long as it’s not Snoop Dog and stripper poles…

IARP update • Jul 28, 2022 01:43 PM

So while awaiting the NCAA to pull their thumbs from their butts and punish us for something legal today... we hire an Adidas staffer to run our NIL program. lol

Here is an idea we should consider for Late Night.... forget bringing in rappers. Bring in Jo Koy and he will crack up everyone with his tilt on college sports!

Best idea I've had in ages! lol

2023 Recruiting • Jul 28, 2022 01:35 PM

@BeddieKU23

If he's contemplating turning pro out of HS maybe he's not a great catch. I'd rather steer clear of OADs. We score big on him sticking around more than one year.

IARP update • Jul 28, 2022 01:33 PM

I know this sounds soooo wrong... but...

Can we start a "pre-fund" for Chris Johnson to help him out if he declares to KU?

IARP update • Jul 28, 2022 01:31 PM

@Jethro said in IARP update:

So, why is ESPN suddenly on our side? Two years ago, Vitale was smearing us. Hmmm…

The retirement of iconic coaches hurts their TV revenue. Suddenly... Self is needed!

IARP update • Jul 27, 2022 08:54 PM

Can't we start a "KUBuckets Player Assist Program" and essentially raise funds and dish them out to players for use of their likeness in our blog?

Seems like we can just add a donation button to this site and start a fund. (hint)

2023 Recruiting • Jul 27, 2022 08:51 PM

Does anyone know... is there a list already started for Late Night attendees?

2023 Recruiting • Jul 27, 2022 08:50 PM

@BeddieKU23

Of course, the clips are "best of" so tend not to show "work in progress." But I saw a lot in those clips... great vision for passing, basketball EQ, crossover capable, competitive and communicator, size and quickness... the guy is smooth and scores in various ways including while guarded he created scoring space.

He looks like he could become a quality defender.

I just can't recall seeing so many gifts in a few minutes of tape. I'm sure he is like most young players and needs time to adapt to D1, but he has a big toolset going in!

2023 Recruiting • Jul 27, 2022 01:36 PM

Chris Johnson... wow! Watch his clips here:

https://www2.kusports.com/news/mens_basketball/ ↗

He's as gifted as I've seen in combo guards. He shows about every quality to the game in these clips.

I'd hope he would stick around for a couple of seasons though because OADs aren't the best ticket to a NC.

My question... does he play well with others? Team player? I think we've all come to learn a huge lesson from Och. That kid was 100% team player and totally supported his teammates... and without that attitude, no way we win it all!

IARP update • Jul 27, 2022 12:23 PM

I think the key moving forward is to realize there are still rules governing players and universities. The rules have changed... but we have to abide by those rules.

Makes me wonder... since college basketball is so competitive... what are the new areas to cheat in and give your school an advantage? There has to be that line again.

Anyone like to comment on that?
