The time for us to bug Dajuan to score more is when he puts up some high %s... like 40% from trey!
Welcome to my universe! hahahaheheheeee
I understand what you are saying... but there is no better contribution at PG than being part of a national championship.
We all like to see guys capable of scoring... it just isn't always the best contribution they can make, especially at PG.
I know I'm down for another championship year where Juan only scores a little but we double up our titles.
None of our other 4 players should feel like they can go on cruise control because Juan is now a threat. They all should feel like his points are totally bonus points.
Juan definitely needs to think team offense first, before he gets his points... though... when there is a clear out on the side he likes to drive and he's facing someone he feels he can take... he should take it! When he gets that wide open trey shot he needs to put it up for a heat check. If he's hot... keep shooting it. If he feels it, keep shooting it.
We don't want to pressure him for points. That would be a disaster. He has to keep his focus first on team.
I think Harris will produce more points this year... but whatever happens, happens. His responsibility isn't to score, but to run the show.
I remember when we pushed Sherron for more offense... and how that went... and he was a more skilled scorer who had some body for his drives.
I hope Harris spends more time working out offense with other players... earning himself some assists.
I think we don't know enough behind the scenes stuff on these guys to adequately predict minutes. I remember how almost everyone thought it was a huge mistake to give Dajuan minutes at PG.
We aren't at practice to see which players pickup coaching best. Some players just "click" with Self.
Gradey seems like he might be a high basketball IQ guy. I'm guessing here that he is on the "Self fast-track" path.
Sounds odd. Might be a couple of weeks or might be surgery.
"the Jayhawks welcomed a group of ladies back into the Fieldhouse in person for a behind-the-scenes look at everything that goes into the program. That included a tour of the facilities, including the KU locker room"
I read this and thought the worst. Then it mentioned players' moms.
I've been high on Gradey for two years! The kid is going to be a big-time player... but he is under pressure. Too many expectations early. I wish people would back off him.
Expect a huge slump somewhere in his freshman year. If we expect it, maybe it doesn't happen!
Concerning Rice... I bet 95% of those top tier recruits come into college with unrealistic expectations. It's part of the college coaching experience to help them find a healthy attitude. I think we should just give him space... like Gradey... and lets see what happens!
Totally agree on the legit of Houston.
How about our Big 12 very own Niang? 6'8" and body. I loved watching that guy play! He schooled everyone... both outside and inside!
McCullar should be a beast in the low post!
I totally agree.... would be great to see Zach earn the spot!
We'll have to agree to disagree on that one.
I compare how he moves his feet to how Dave moved his feet and I see a huge difference.
I agree he needs more strength and think that is what works against him stealing all the 5 minutes. Probably not a great leaper. If he moves his feet well that can make up for a lot. Positioning and being a quick leaper can do that.
To be honest... we all need to see him play more to assess him and he might be better this year if he spent his summer wisely building his strength.
I met him a few months ago... he's got some size. His height is real and isn't as thin as I previously thought.
@Kcmatt7 said in The 5 spot:
What do you mean by βhis footwork outside of the low post is like nothing we have ever had from a big?β
Clem is nimble with his feet. For example, when he sets a pick he can position his feet the right way to prevent a lot of offensive fouls. He can also know how to set a better screen by being in the exact spot that will best slow down the defender's path.
Sounds like a little thing, but it ends up counting big!
Think back on all the offensive fouls that were called on guys like Big Dave. He either arrives late or his position is ripe for drawing the call.
Great post... hope it works out that way!
I get revved with this idea... Clem offers so many assets, including passing, and his footwork outside of the low post is like nothing we have ever had from a big. Put this guy on the perimeter and we have a lot less fouls called on us because Clem is skilled at setting a screen.
Imagine his potential for pick and pop, pick and roll?
He's also a solid passer who can easily pass over defenses into the post for darting guys.
To really take advantage of Clem we will need to commit early to having him be our guy. There is pluses and negatives... the plus is we can have other traditional bigs back him up who run traditional offense and then we have two very different offensive approaches we can run at teams and they have to practice against this before facing us. The neg is we have to work hard to get proficient at both.
Perhaps.... but it sure wasn't done because Self wanted him gone and replaced. Self pushed him to leave because this was his time to go, even if he preferred to stick around.
I love the idea... just uncertain of the effectiveness. I think back to Kieff popping the julie from top of the key... it was sweet when it worked. But how effective is it? Your big out there having zero chance of a rebound and taking a shot that is probably best left for a guard. We should always be able to scheme a good trey for a guard.
I hope I'm proven wrong here... would be great if Zach could go 40% from outer space!
Very fun read in here.
I like to read diversity in opinions on the 5 and we have many ideas going.
I don't think we become a real powerhouse team without the 5 being resolved. Self has always relied on the post and even last year, as he designed around his previous necessary hi-lo the season came down to low post scoring down the stretch.
I'm never going to say "never" about Self because he has proven me wrong before. He is a guy who changes with the game and the players he has. But as of today, I think his focus right now is to weed through the post guys and maybe nails it down to 2 soon to carry the weight. Ability to develop low post scoring will be key and I can't help but think strength will be very very important. Look at all those guys and judge them by strength and you have maybe the best indicator (guess) as to how this is going to work itself out.
I have to admit I'm intrigued with Clemence... just not quite as committed as @Texas-Hawk-10 yet. Clemence clearly has a huge skill set, but will it be the skills needed in the low post? Kind of reminds me of EJ... is it necessary to sacrifice his development for his future in order to fit into KU's needs today? If I'm Clemence... I'm working on my handles, outside shot, crossover, creating scoring space all over the floor and less low post finishes.
I will always wonder if Self sort of lucked out by the fact that Roy never won a championship. Since Roy didn't win it all our fan base was open for change away from an "all offense" approach to basketball. Bill took us to a place where we stopped the run and gun... less overall excitement... and made us think about winning with low scores and defense.
I still don't understand how our attention is on defense without us having full court pressure. Totally goes against my understanding of the game. I think Bill realizes we don't do well enough in our M2M defense to extend further on the court. So he limits us in an attempt to be better at half court defense. At this point, I just buy in because his record speaks for itself, and I'm not talking about winning two NCs... I'm talking about his winning % and ownership of the B12. The guy just flat out wins!
I try to see this through Self's eyes... a guess at best.
I think he will prioritize the minutes at the 5 by:
-
Defensive prowess... hold ground on bigger bigs, switch well, decent shot blocking ability.
-
Offensive prowess... in the paint
-
Rebounding
-
Foot speed... fast break basketball
-
Offensive prowess from outside
Our biggest calling card this year should be defense. We have some decent pieces here to develop into one of the better defensive teams in the country. We need a 5 who can hold his ground, block some shots and always be a threat, switch well on screens. If we get that from a 5 we should end up a Top 5 defensive team nationally!
Someone has to be a scoring threat in the low post. Got to have it!
I put rebounding in there with defense. Both are necessary from our 5!
Excellent for development! Wish we had several of these.
I know where I got my hops...!5thcousin.jpg β
Just discovered I am related to Elmarko! Bumba! lol
And he tries to always see the positive on players... even players that leave our program unexpectedly.
He really is a "player's coach!"
Part of Bill Self's success has to relate to how he supports his players. When he praises them, he knows HOW to praise them (specifically). When they screw up he knows how to address their issues and doesn't make it a personal attack.
Do we all realize how fortunate we are to have Self at KU?
I hear what you are saying and agree we often play a schedule that is too tough.
I'm complaining here when I don't have a fix for scheduling because of the growth of our conference. Maybe we need a few more teams then split it out in divisions.
I just know that nothing beats home-and-home for the fans! It totally stokes competition between all teams because after teams face a humiliating loss to a team, they want revenge.
I know when we lose to someone in our conference and we don't get a second shot at them fans complain. I'm one of those fans!
I think we should kill the conference tourney and play more home-and-homes! We should look back over the past decade or so and see how many teams won our conference tourney (and won an automatic NCAA tournament spot) but wouldn't have made the tourney without being conference tourney champs.
I managed to get the app to partially work then airplay it to TV. Could only see little bits. Made me feel like I was doing something illegal, like a peeping tom to my old alma mater.
Yep... It's a lot more technical to slap it on a website/app versus tv. TV is built for live events streaming to big numbers. I don't expect anything showing up there... perhaps some highlights later. There should be some clips showing up on kusports.com later tonight or tomorrow.
Maybe next year there will exist ESPN++ (pay triple price) that will include Late Night again. Some kind of raping and blame it on gas prices.
I apologize... I'm not a happy camper after having years of watching Late Night.
Looks like the only viewing of Late Night is on the Kansas Jayhawks phone app. I don't watch my phone like a tv. F-it!
What is this world coming to?
Guessing the TV wonks are computing how much makeup they will save on Bruce. Won't have to add color to that bright red face.
Over/under on how long he lasts before making some completely offensive statements generating mega complaints.
Big 10 hasn't won a NC since 2000... Bruce went to the right conference.
I'm with you.... it appears he has the skill set we are used to, but also the luxury of size! His height, girth, and arm length should bode well for developing defensive skills, too.
I doubt he becomes an OAD, but you never know what is in the player's mind and what hype he will receive. I'm thinking he will be sharing PT with others so doubt he builds a complete resume in one year.
I like what I see, hear and read about this new commit!
He's got a great PG body and goes hard. Great attitude...
Welcome, Elmarko! Rock Chalk!
Sure liking our recruiting these days!
Thanks for reminding me. I didn't like that either.
The death of conference home-and-home... killing revenge games. Reducing the source to build rivalries. It sucks.
We might as well have just one D1 conference in the entire country and have a schedule lottery every year to pick our games.
This is what happens when you turn D1 over to TV marketing wonks.
Teams and fans reduced to ZERO input. The almighty dollar rules all.
You all know me... CHIP... CHIP... CHIP! lol
So correct me if I'm wrong... Then isn't Nike a booster and we still have recruiting violations today, even with NIL acceptability?
Isn't the BIG NEWS from our case the pressure by NCAA to make a shoe company's status "booster?"
Didn't we have to admit Adidas was a booster in our allegation case?
@Texas-Hawk-10 said in Late Night:
KU is also officially out of the Bronny James sweepstakes, not that KU was going to sign him anyways, with Bronny signing an NIL deal with Nike.
So how does this work? Since Nike also contracts with schools... isn't Nike a "booster?"
Can an athlete sign a NIL with Nike while going to an Adidas school?
Talk about stench!
I was in Lawrence this past weekend and noticed this artwork at a friend's house - !IMG_6191.jpeg β
Super bummed out about Bobby. If he can stay healthy he will be a huge contributor.
I'm thinking Dajuan should be able to put up 7+ this season. So many of us agree!
I don't expect him to become a volume scorer. But we saw him sometimes take it to the hole in the FF. Any help he gives helps us not only with points, but helps keep defenses honest. I don't think that's a high bar of expectations. Most starting players lift their point totals as they progress through their college years.
What do you think would be a fair expectation for Dajuan? Just go along with the idea he averages more points this coming year than last year. 2 points more? 3? 4?
I think magic formulas are hard to call before the season. So much has to do with Self... his sets, plays, and where he puts his players and for how many minutes. This is such a big part of his job. We don't always agree with his judgment with out backseat comments but we don't know what he knows... especially at practices.
Dajuan has made statements (more than once) about him getting his shot more. I'm expecting to see some of that. Some. At least to the point where teams take him as a threat.
Let's all hope Dajuan and Jalen put up good numbers... without at least one of those guys doing that, I have a hard time imagining a deep March run.
I'm really curious how Self will use McCullar on offense. He's a player that should have NBA dreams but hard to imagine without more offense... a lot more offense.
@BeddieKU23 said in Initial Impressions of Top 25 and 1 Preseason Poll:
Specifically, shooting efficiency is my biggest concern for this team.
I agree. Overall offensive efficiency will have to be proven with a new lineup. Hopefully Dajuan and Jalen will step into higher leadership roles... I think they will! Hopefully we develop a good offensive rhythm that will help lift our efficiency.
I just think Tshiebwe will be a huge team motivational factor. It's a factor UK rarely has!
I feel the same about UNC. Obviously, injuries could change all of this... but if UNC stays healthy, Bacot stays healthy, I see them elevating team play and will definitely have probably the most-experienced tournament team.
Also... better watch Kentucky. They are loaded and Tshiebwe will be such a beast on the boards. I rarely bite on the Wildcat hype... but if Tshiebwe can anchor this team well, they should be tough.
I'm guessing with Braun we would be in the Top 3...
I'm a Davis fan. He seems like the right man for the job. I like his style and I think he will keep the UNC legacy going right.
I always prefer we get under-ranked.... puts less of a target on our heads and is good motivation. Seems like the former winner usually is treated liberally in the preseason polls. I don't think that is the case here. We should outperform this poll!
I agree with others... UNC should get that top spot. It will be tough for them to live on the top perch all year... always is for teams. But they have the experience and definitely the desire to get back there and win it all!

Memphis made it difficult on IARP... I believe we have been playing ball with IARP. Any bets on who will be punished more?
Shaq will get the crowd rockin'! It's a good, solid choice and we'll get some side benefits... like a little free promotion because of Shaq's high visibility.
I can also imagine someone else famous being a part of this...
