Tourney prediction time already?!? • Feb 21, 2020 06:37 AM

There is one definite way we can beat Baylor this Saturday and in March.

Devon has been playing better... free from injury. If he ups his aggression on offense and takes over the game. He hits the open trey or he drives to the rim and finishes. Or... he makes the perfect assist. He has to take over the game and produce extreme offensive efficiency. Clear out and give him space. Make Baylor adjust. What would they do? Weakside help? Devon can drive through two defenders. If he thinks he is pro material he needs to show he's a play maker and can control a game. Take this team on his back and beat down the top team in the country on their home court. Now that will get the NBA scouts attention!

We are very capable of winning it all. No doubt.

But until I see a weakness in Baylor... I still think Baylor should be favored to win it all. Maybe my opinion changes after Saturday.

I've thought that Drew's lack of experience in winning big games would be a factor but I'm not sure how much he is coaching his players over his players coaching him. He has such a great group of experienced players and players just playing with old man wisdom. These guys have great composure and they stay focused on efficiency.

Hope I am proven wrong.

There are two relevant questions concerning Doke and the NBA.

First.... will he be drafted? I think he will. Second, will he stick enough to earn a contract? That is a real mystery.

I think the stats concerning what happens when Doke is on the floor versus not is pretty much irrelevant with pro scouts. The D1 game is completely different from NBA.

Doke still has glaring weaknesses. His FT% by itself almost removes him from hope of making it. NBA is business. Poke a Doke will become a huge factor because the numbers tell opponents to foul him, and they have deep benches and a lot of fouls to give. I don't have the numbers in front of me, but I bet the points per possession in the league is much higher than college. That makes it an obvious strategy to foul Doke.

I'm also not 100% sure he can keep up with the pace of the NBA game. His condition is so much better than before, but the pro game moves faster than college. The real key is to know how Doke's pace compares to other 5s in the league.

Another question... will Doke finish at the rim at the same high percentage as he does in college? Not sure about that. I'm wondering how Doke finishes against Jojo.

The bright side for Doke is his age and how fast he has improved in such a short time. Might he still develop his game and FT shooting? Yes!

My only prediction is this: you will not see Doke playing pro ball and shooting FTs like he does now. He'll have to improve to see any possible minutes in the league.

@BeddieKU23

Yes. Whether Teague plays is huge.

We need Marcus and everyone to pressure the ball. I know we have a highly-ranked defense, but in reality, we don't pass the eye test in areas on defense.

Can we disrupt their offensive flow? Can we get out there and challenge the trey? Can we get out there and challenge passes so shooters don't receive the perfect "catch and shoot?"

It is going to take a monster effort for us to win this game and we will need every bit of our bench in this one.

We've got to want it more!

More than we can BEARS... • Feb 19, 2020 03:00 PM

I'm a Jayhawk right on down to my toenails. So this is a tough one. Why? Because Baylor is the x-axis team I've always dreamed of. They get my philosophy on where the game is going. I think Drew started following my rants on this and bought in because I didn't see this coming from him. He won me over as a coach with this team.

Okay... I have that out of my system. Now... how we leave Waco with a W...

I do think we need a strategy to win this game. We need to catch Drew off guard and make him change strategies during the game. This has always been his weakness before, so why won't he still have that weakness.

How do we attack Baylor? Inside game? If we do, we are trading our 2s against their 3s. I'm skeptical that will work against an efficient trey offense like Baylor has.

I have an idea. Let's force Baylor into our game pace. Let's go against what we have done all year. We've been one of the slowest offenses in America. Let's change that. At least, let's appear we are changing that. Curious? My idea is to attack Baylor where they are strongest... attack their nifty footwork. We need to control the boards and we need to pass out quickly off defensive boards. If, by chance, we can get some run outs, great! If we can't... great! We keep pushing tempo and we take out their legs. We have an extra day of rest preparing for this game. Both teams have some depth to run. Let's run. A Baylor team that gets tired at the end is a team that can no longer hit treys. We win at the end because of attrition. We keep feeding the post because we will trade our easy baskets in the paint against their missed treys. We just have to keep pushing the ball. Move up the tempo. And when we are on offense we have to set a ton of ball screens. Those take energy to defend. We will have to use everyone in this game including Enaruna. We've got to use him where he can score... on drives to his left. Doesn't mean he has to score. He just has to make the ball cuts to potentially score. Baylor will be playing off scouting reports. Good. We have to make everyone of our guys a threat to score.

Make this game like the Dayton game. Push. Doke's defense in the post will be the difference because we will make Baylor beat us from the trey line.

Then.. we HAVE TO guard the trey! We have to play that nagging high-energy defense Nova always plays against us.

We need this win. Not just for the Big 12 title.... for March. I could see us facing Baylor in the title game this year. We need to psyche them out like they used to be. That was always a big way we beat them because they never believed they could beat us.

This will have to be our biggest grind game all year. It will be a war of wills. We can do it!

More than we can BEARS... • Feb 19, 2020 04:07 AM

What are our chances in Waco?

Better from behind? • Feb 18, 2020 12:37 PM

I see the upcoming Baylor game as being a battle like the Dayton game, but without a big chunk of the points.

Going in to this season most of us saw the chip Kansas was carrying, including Self. It has been our "silent partner" throughout the season, perhaps not as big a factor as many of us thought. I think Doke has carried the chip probably more than anyone on the team. I'm mentioning chip because we should get a "chip bump" when facing #1 Baylor. We shouldn't be favored and all the recent hype putting us above Baylor in March is such BS. Until we prove we are better than Baylor (in many areas) we should remain the underdog. Even a win at Baylor won't prove anything because it has always been easier for us to win at Baylor than Baylor to win in AFH. Baylor owned us in AFH. Baylor has more solid scoring, especially at the trey. Baylor is a lot more effective at spreading the floor. It will be a monumental win for us to win at Baylor, though it still won't prove we are the better team unless maybe if we completely steam roll them and send a message of complete superiority. I just don't see that happening because Baylor is my example of what x-axis basketball should look like.

Own the horizontal space in the game and own the game!

Sooner or Later OU was sent packing • Feb 17, 2020 02:17 PM

I've always been a Sooner football fan. Most of my family is. When I grew up, KU football still stunk as well as KSU (which was even worse than KU).

So I have always attended Sooner football games and know the mentality of Sooner fans. OU is still a football school. Basketball is a game that is a little bit too intimate with fans packing into a tight space. Sooners are used to big stadium fandom. Sooners need to show more success with basketball to build the following back. If that can happen, the fans will return and would be the same as back in the Tubbs days. Billy had a personality that was good for OU because he brought extra attention to their program.

You can hardly talk about Sooner basketball without talking about Sooner football. I remember the days of the Big 8 and the entire nation would be focused on OU vs NU games every year. The Orange Bowl usually determined the National Champion, too.

@dylans

I think about Jojo and him punching it out to the opposite FT line in a split second!

  1. Quick rebound outlet passes - Doke should be able to whip that ball out quickly and with a speedster like Devon, we should get several run out baskets. This addition would catch teams off guard and give us instant offense.

  2. Establish a full court press - great way to change a game. Since we've got Doke back at the basket, we should be able to utilize an effective press. This isn't something we need to run all the time. But when we need to change the tempo of a game this is a great tool.

  3. Everyone working on free throws - most everyone on this team should shoot better at the line. We are losing lots of points every game at the line.

  4. Quicker feeds to the post - our perimeter players overthink their passes into the post. Their passes are predictable, off target and often ill timed. We need to speed up passing. Watch our offense and you will see our bigs and other guys cutting through the lane, being wide open for a split second. If we could learn to pass quickly we could dominate with scoring in the post.

Shaka vs Boynton vs Prohm Cage Match • Feb 17, 2020 07:01 AM

@BeddieKU23

Love it! I noticed his hand is out... just like he plays defense... with his hands out ready to slap and steal balls.

I don't see Marcus' recent uptick as a temporary benefit. I believe he has made a breakthrough in his game. He's been able to string along plenty of games with relatively good health. That has lead to him realizing more he can do. I'm even optimistic he will continue to shoot better because he is clearly showing more confidence in his game. He's playing without overthinking... just feeling the game and reacting quickly off his reflexes. Between him and Doke we may end up with the best defensive team ever under Self!

Shaka vs Boynton vs Prohm Cage Match • Feb 16, 2020 05:28 AM

Gosh I remember when Shaka went to Texas and Texas was thinking they finally brought in the answer to beat us. Never seen a school hire someone just because they think he can beat one school... but that is what I felt about that hire. I know I felt confident time would straighten the score with Shaka... and I was right. I was actually hoping he would bring us a real challenge every year because that is how we become better... by being challenged. Texas was a bigger threat with Barnes, and with Barnes Texas had one of the classiest guys in D1.

WSU grudge • Feb 14, 2020 08:24 PM

For those who remember their school days in debate... "truth" is defined as an absolute. Absolute is only applicable to mathematics.

We are all "liars." We all have told "untruths" in our lives because, basically, every statement we make lacks absolute truth. Language isn't built to accommodate absolute anything.

I'm making this extreme point because our tone is what counts here. Yes... Self, like all of us, has used language. Language doesn't deal with absolute truths. Therefore, Self has communicated "untruths." Do we take this to the extent of calling him a liar? This is about tone and how aggressively we want to label Self in the negative.

I'm on board for agreeing that college basketball is loaded with all kinds of untruth... exaggerations, misinformation, compromise, etc etc etc. Self is a part of the D1 system. He has chosen basketball coaching as his career. Did he do it because he desired to jump into a profession swimming in untruth? I don't think so. I think he loves basketball. He loves coaching basketball. And he loves guiding young people in the game of basketball and the game of life. That is the "tone" I apply to this thread.

This was the first game this season where I really felt like we toughened up when we needed to. That end game run where we just shut them down was the potential I always saw in this team. Let's hope we can take this toughness into Baylor, TTech, KSU... and into March!

We do shared game series with many schools lower than WSU. Playing in Wichita now and then can only help our recruiting visibility there, too. Cough cough... Perry Ellis!

WSU grudge • Feb 12, 2020 05:42 PM

@FarmerJayhawk said in WSU grudge:

We get all the gate revenue + save the money forking out a big check to a mid-major to travel. Those two games are pretty profitable for KU. Plus those are just exhibitions. No reason to burn a non-con regular season game on WSU. They wouldn’t take a buy game and there’s no good reason to play a road game there when we could do a home and home with a much better team.

I focus more on the Xs and Os than counting beans. But I bet we give up a large amount of revenue currently lost on t-shrts and coffee mugs. And more than anything, it gives us another big game every year to put on a major sports television outlet. I know I tend to watch the UK/Louisville game every year regardless if one team is having a bad year. It seems like we are better off if we help programs in our geographic region. It gets pretty lonely being out in the middle of nowhere without other power teams nearby. I spent my morning helping a customer in North Carolina and she went on and on about all the great basketball in that state.

We are Kansas basketball... and I see us as ambassadors of the game. Seems kind of low that we intentionally don't help an instate program build up. I know I just want to watch quality basketball and I hope WSU builds their program because it gives me one more place to see good ball. I wish KSU would improve, too. And if they beat us now and then it just adds more excitement to the following games.

D1 ball is really about cheating and lying. Just look at recruiting. You are telling one kid how great it would be for him to come to your program while you continue to recruit players right over him.

As fans, the best we can hope for is a coach who can use his words well and limit the harshness of the reality. I've always said that a major plus with Self has been his ability to handle his words well.

I like seeing us play meaningful games where there is some kind of rivalry, any kind of rivalry.

Playing interstate "rivals" like Emporia State is a big joke and waste of time. Since when are we in charge of helping them out? What do we get out of those fluff games?

I like to see us play WSU because they give us a great taste of that "mid major" style game... something we have had problems with in March and embarrassed many times, sent packing.

I also like playing in the Champions Classic and anything where we play typical Top 5 teams, but this year, playing Duke in the first game of the year was plain stupid and meaningless.

Actually.... we get a lot less out of playing Mizzou every year than if we played the Shocks because the Shocks tend to be ranked higher and they present us with the mid major style.

The argument that WSU isn't good enough to play us is hogwash. Explain Emporia State.

@nuleafjhawk

I think this team has learned their identity is defense. It is how they are winning games, and players want to win.

Once they accept it as their identity they believe more in what Self has been teaching them all along... defense!

You can see how their energy picks up higher on defense than on offense. They are taking some pride in getting stops.

I remain hard on them because they still have so much they can improve on. If they can improve in the second half of the season like they did in the first half, we should go far in March.

Marcus has made a big impact on this team by leading by example. His energy is contagious. So glad he will be back next year, too!

This is a down year in college basketball. Watched the Duke/UNC game yesterday and it was like watching a high school game.

I still think our hype over how great our defense is is largely overhype. We still leave trey shots wide open, miss assignments, make unnecessary switches, sometimes go under ball screens, fail to play to scouting reports and hedge properly, fail to seal off the boards, and we still haven't learned how to play a hyper Nova-style swarming defense... am I missing something?

But we do play good "fuzzy defense." We stay fairly close to the ball and Doke is in the paint. Doke seems to improve his defense almost every single game now! I can tell he has been studying Withey footage. Withey understood the path a basketball had to take to get to the basket, and that is all that counts because he would meet the ball somewhere in that path.

My optimism for March is largely focused on Doke's improving defense. Hey... it worked against us in 2012 to give Calipari his only crown with the unibrow!

We've already proven we can win without offense. How many teams heading to March Madness will know that?

Big 12 Conference Going to Help or Hurt KU • Feb 07, 2020 05:05 PM

I think it will be really tough for us to win at Baylor this year.

I think our best shot is to develop a specific game plan that is unique, based partially off of scouting report and then off of bringing them a shock. This is something Self doesn't do. We don't come into games with a tailored plan for anyone, which I think is a mistake.

Hudy's replacement • Feb 05, 2020 03:13 PM

The proof of his work is in the pudding. We are just starting to see how multi-year players are developing. Also relates to each player buying in to work hard to develop.

Our facilities are top notch. There is no reason why players shouldn't increase their strength considerably over a lengthy period of time being here.

Hudy had a personality and presence that helped inspire players. Not sure what we have now.

I had the same problem.

I was on Firefox, then opened in Chrome and didn't have a problem.

I haven't seen much of Tech on the tube this year. Just missed out on those games.

They look like a typical Beard team... mostly medium-sized utility players who do a little bit of everything well... mostly listen to whatever Beard commands.

@BeddieKU23 - Yeah, it would be nice if we actually learned how to use our size in the post (2 bigs). It really hasn't happened yet and we still will need that as a tool in March, regardless what the stats show that 4-guards are superior.

My mind hasn't changed on this team. I still think this is a team that should run a fairly rigid offense through structured plays because we just aren't figuring it out in free-flow mode. If we could get up to 1/3 of our offense through play calls I would be thrilled! I know the modern players don't really like the rigidity but we could use more structure in our offense and it would tear down about any defense we face.

Best to signal from the bench so we can hopefully speed up our offense. We are running one of the slowest offenses in the country! That just doesn't make sense!!!

I am liking to see the backdoor alleyoops called again!

This team has it's nicks and bruises, no doubt. So do most (or all) D1 teams by now.

Then the question is: should Self adjust PT, giving less time to the starters? I feel fine with how he has used his bench so far. He definitely has allowed a freshman (Christian) into the big time minutes.

Is our play hampered by all these nicks? I don't see it enough to say we have a problem. We have other issues that need to be addressed completely unrelated to being nicked up.

Here is an issue: this is one of the worst passing teams we have had in a while. Also, a team not understanding floor spacing and timing. Passes are not hard or on target. We work our offense, feed the post and draw the double team, then we can't get the ball out to a shooter in time because the defenses make up the distance to stop or impact the trey shot. This isn't just about Doke or Mac passing from in to out, but also passing on the perimeter isn't on target for shooters to catch and shoot in one clean motion.

Big 12 Conference Going to Help or Hurt KU • Jan 29, 2020 11:41 PM

I think this team is showing signs of pretty much all Self teams (except '08). They haven't proven to me they can attack an aggressive defense.

Baylor brought great defense into AFH and we folded like a cheap suitcase. Nova played with decent pressure and beat us with less than half the quality of players we have.

Before March I sure hope our coaching staff works on attacking aggressive defense. It really isn't rocket science but the first thing you have to do is not get rattled. Second, force them to foul on all overplays. Third, someone is open!

Passing well is helpful when attacking aggressive defenses, but most of all you need to drive the ball. Force fouls. You don't even have to fake it like Marcus Smart. Just carry the ball over their arms, use ball and shot fakes, redirect driving paths. Pay attention to the circle under the basket and draw contact. Move towards a pass coming your way and half the time they were playing the passing lanes and will foul. There are so many ways to beat an aggressive team. We should love to play them and we should thrive with the talent level we have!

It is hard enough to teach college players how to play aggressive defense that they rarely get to the point where they can do it without fouling if a team knows how to attack them. This is where you can go to the NBA file tapes and watch some true masters of defense to learn how it is done!

Get a team that has a game plan of using aggressive defense in foul trouble and they are toast!

Sounds familiar to my playground days except I may not have been as pale as you.

I got so tired of hearing that word. It wore me out. And it convinced me that when some of the black culture accepted using that word it was like they chose to carry bags of sand on their heads. It's excess baggage.

I knew a lot of people on that court and I can't think of many (any) that ever made much of a quality of life for themselves.

I compare that to black friends that never accepted that word as part of their vocabulary and they had more successful lives.

Someone trained at the right background would better comment about this. I can only share what I experienced... but it seemed like anyone who uses that word regularly carries the heavy weight behind it and life is tough carrying all that weight.

Interesting perspective to overuse words to eventually strip them of their power.

Not sure about that. And that may work for youth. Not sure it will work for elders.

I'm thinking of the n-word and I'm thinking of some elder people in the south who were often threatened or beaten while being called that word out of hatred. Is it realistic for them to learn to stop cringing if they hear that word overused? I have my doubts.

I don't think words are all the same or should be treated the same. I don't think thug is equal to the n-word. Thug doesn't have the history here in America like the n-word has.

I know a lot of black people that never gave young black people a thumbs up on using the n-word, even when they changed the word by adding an "a" to it.

Certain words, like the n-word, have too much negative history associated with it. People were beaten and killed within the context of that word. Thug is just a word that has been hijacked recently by many.

Just my opinion.

I do not compare this Baylor team with any past Baylor team under Drew. This team is legit. If they stay healthy I don't expect them to implode like other Baylor teams.

All we need to do is win out in league play, including at Baylor. If we can do that we are guaranteed at least a share of the crown. There isn't a game on our schedule we can't win because our team this year can travel with defense. Anytime we bring defense we are a tough team to beat, regardless how our offense sputters.

If we focus on defense, and forcing turnovers, and then run out those turnovers, we won't lose. Give us 20 points a game off of turnovers and we will surely score enough points to win.

It's a strange year in college basketball. I believe the words spoken by some of the experts in saying there are no uber dominant teams in the country this year.

For the Big 12, we don't have the quality depth this year matching past years. But what we have at the top all are threatening teams that could go to the Final Four. WVU, Baylor and us. This is easily the best Baylor team Drew has ever produced. And WVU has a lot of potential to improve throughout the year and be a real threat in March.

We may not have one of our best offensive teams, but we have a team capable of playing good defense and it has been a while since we've had that.

Even though the bottom of the league may not be as strong as in past years, KU better never sleep in any of these games or we will lose. This KU team has potential to really stink when they don't come ready to play.

I think all league games are helpful to us, even the lower teams. Every team in our league has us well scouted and that always poses challenges in play. Last night's game was important to us. Christian really emerged on the road for a monster game to proclaim him as possibly the third best scorer on our team.

What if science finds DNA markers that match certain specific generalizations often attributed to race? Especially negative generalizations.

What would we do as a society? Might we finally come to the realization that we have to accept each other, flaws and all, and work towards something positive?

Silent racism is the worst. All you want to know is who doesn't like you so you know what is going on.

I've never like the word "racist" even though these people who fit the description are out there. I'd rather call it "blind hatred." The result is hatred, whether very outgoing or subtle. Using the word "racist" just flames everything negatively because we have attached many definitions to the word and no one likes to be described down to a 't'.

Happy people don't have time for hatred. Let's all cure hatred in the world and almost every problem in the world will vanish. I don't have time or energy to hate KKK people back. I feel sympathetic with these people for having a life often based on hatred. I hope and pray they find a way to be happy and love the world. Better for them, better for everyone!

We live in strange times.

I have to say that I really don't like how our society hijacks words and phrases... applying some kind of definitive current, popular trend.

Thinking about "thug"... I've used that word (sometimes) throughout my life. It never ONCE was meant to be some sort of secret code for the "n-word." I applied the word meaning rough people who attempt to control a situation with violence or brute force. That brute force can be non-violent. I mentioned examples in my previous post.

The constant addition of meanings to language can create problems as much as help identify problems. For example... some may now think I'm a racist because I used the word "thug."

Look at our country right now. It's building powder keg over stuff like this. I doubt there are many people who want to be tagged "racist." And though they may have done something or made a statement that falls into this new prejudgment system pointing to being labeled "racist" the prejudgment in itself is the same potential "character flaw" that goes with the definition of "racist."

My perspective is to give people the benefit of the doubt and think positively about them. It's worked for me my entire life and I am truly blessed with many friends from all walks of life.

I hope we can move past making judgments of each other and focus on our love for Jayhawk basketball.

@dylans

I really feel for you and your situation. I'm sure there must be many primal urges hitting your mind and soul. Advice is hard to give... this is extremely personal. I hope you keep your wits and your sanity about you. The best way to protect your child is to do whatever you can to control your emotions (stay calm) so you can make the proper moves.

Struggle is an opportunity to grow. Please remember that and grow through it.

Being vengeful will only escalate things and in the end will leave you with emptiness. Find a spiritual way forward and you will also be an example to your child on how to deal with struggles in life.

Sounds like we are on the same page!

You are in my thoughts...

I've watched the video several times. I paid close attention to Silvio lifting up the chair over his head.

I'm convinced he never intended to hit anyone with that chair. He was posturing. It's a cultural thing because he's actually a chilled out guy coming from a chilled out culture.

If his intention was violence, he had time before the chair to really beat on some people. He was backing up and even though Silvio may be the strongest guy on our team I think he is harmless and has no concept of how to fight. I doubt if he has ever been in a fight before.

I think this kind of "thuggery" is dominant in low income communities, whether they are inner city, or a trailer park on the edge of town, or anywhere else. It prospers in areas where education is low and the communities suffer different kinds of struggles than do middle and upper class neighborhoods. Higher income neighborhoods have their own kinds of thugs.... nagging neighbors who want to control what color you should paint your house. Angry people dragging you into court to intimidate and control you. Frivolous lawsuits.

I'm pretty sure some of those high income people would rather accept a fast jab to the liver rather than have to continue dealing with a pain in the butt neighbor who keeps dragging them into a courtroom.

Every culture has difficult people who will bring their hell to others.

KSU Brawl = More Risk That Self Leaves • Jan 25, 2020 08:18 AM

I think most of the Jayhawk Nation still loves Self. That counts bigly. It is quite possible that some of these reactions are positional people posturing politically. Positional People Posturing Politically. The 4 Ps!

So earlier I'm reading some of this "anti-KU/Self hype" and it includes Snoop Dogg's pole dancers and money guns. Really? That kind of sticks out to me and tells me there is way too much hype in all of this. OMG... a MONEY GUN!!! Gimme a break! Gheez...
