So It Was The Victim's Father • Feb 04, 2017 01:58 AM

@jayballer54

Gosh, I'd hate to be a teenager these days. In my day, it was easier and less trouble being a teen because we screwed up but didn't get prosecuted and persecuted for little stuff.

BTW: I'm not putting the sexual assault into my statement above. That isn't "little stuff!"

Josh Jackson • Feb 04, 2017 01:26 AM

It really isn't fair trying to make exact apples-to-apples comparison between Wigs and Josh. We have a very different team and offense now versus when Wigs was here.

It is clear that Josh has quite a few more moves than Wigs had. Though Wigs was a bit more athletic.

I think Wigs would have done much better with our current offense. Having the 4 out - 1 in would help clear out the post area for his drives.

"It’s a great ride Jayhawks, let’s enjoy. Let’s have some fun."

I second that motion!

Pretty hilarious mock draft.

Monk is a good college player, but unless he bulks up big time, he won't make it in the league. It isn't so much just about size.... but strength.

There are reasons why guys like Marcus Smart are getting minutes.

They are silly... until you forget about them and lose!

Young announcement • Feb 03, 2017 08:09 PM

I feel extremely confident!

I feel so confident that I will be wearing my "never fail" Jayhawk t-shirt.

I will sprinkle salt over my shoulder that day, too. Saying lots of prayers. Won't cross under a ladder or let a black cat walk in front of me. I will also keep my fingers double-crossed.

With all of that going for us, how can we fail?

I have some questions • Feb 03, 2017 08:05 PM

@KansasComet

" Refs controlled the tempo of the game, which is a shame."

I think a more accurate proclamation is:

"Refs interfered with the tempo of the game..."

We have this happening to us again this year. It definitely happened to us at Morgantown. Our guys basically withdrew their aggression because they were being called for "air fouls."

We have to mature and learn as a team that we can't back down because of some calls.

There are other things we should do instead.... like... being more focused to prevent the really dumb calls. Stop reaching, not vertically or horizontally. Horizontal position is hands straight up only! Try "selling" a bit harder.

If we are basically going to quit games where calls aren't going our way, we are definitely doomed in March!

Josh Jackson • Feb 03, 2017 07:57 PM

Vandalizing property has always pissed me off.

I'd rather someone steal property.... at least the property stays intact.

Anyways... Josh just happened to be with Vick. It appears that he didn't participate in this alleged activity.

Not to judge.... but it appears that Vick and Carlton both need to mature and can use additional supervision moving forward.

Josh Jackson • Feb 03, 2017 07:54 PM

@nuleafjhawk

"Of course it’s wrong - MOST of the things humans do are wrong."

True.... "perfection" is saved for John Calipari.

@StLJhawk

Dickie V definitely gives lots of slobbery love to blue blood teams. He finally expanded past the ACC to help build his own brand. And he is a BRAND, not just a commentator. I'm sure he has an agent with all the needed staff around... spokesman, marketeers, lawyers, publicist, personal assistant.

His style... people either love it or hate it. I have always found him annoying, but I became softer on him once I realized how involved he is raising money for the battle on cancer.

I bet it does seem one-sided and over-the-top to Baylor fans watching that game.

Bill RE: Next Season • Feb 03, 2017 05:28 PM

@BeddieKU23

Well, that is part of coaching. Drew seems to be good at recruiting and decent in developing players.

It is hard for me to flip the switch and start respecting Drew, because I think he got to where he is the same way Cal did.

And both Cal and Drew are at a success level now that they don't have to rely on a bag of dirty tricks. As they start working with higher ethics they are both bound to win over a lot more followers.

But what about coaches like Lon Kruger? He is a man of principles (and not just recently acquired). He has worked his butt off for a long, long time to get where he is today. He didn't take any short cuts.

Coaches like Lon help me keep the perspective on who I choose to respect.

Aren't sports a man's version of a soap opera?

As you well know... men are definitely EMOTIONAL creatures, too. But men have to pose like tough guys, so we don't get to release our emotions during movies, etc.

Sports, on the other hand....

It really is the DRAMA in sports that provides the carrot.

I almost choked to death... swallowing my tongue.

If you are convinced then who is left to play devil's advocate?

Just for old time's sake.... don't you want to beitch slap someone? At least pile on top of Carlton.

Bill RE: Next Season • Feb 03, 2017 05:13 PM

@Kcmatt7

It sure is hard to criticize Drew's ability as a recruiter. He has always found great players, many not well known before coming to Baylor.

Baylor continues to creep up in quality, a little at a time.

Vick and Josh • Feb 03, 2017 05:08 PM

@truehawk93

"Let’s not feed the monster anymore than has been fed."

Probably a wise idea.

But we are ready for Plan B, if necessary. "Plan B"... the "B" stands for Bad Boys. We already know how to play Bad Ball. We could become the WVU on steroids. We won't call it a "full court press".... ours will be "full court smash!"

Look at the bright side... We don't have to worry about giving up points in the post. Any opponent DARE come in the post with the ball gets undercut, punched, or has a bong shoved up their backside!

So It Was The Victim's Father • Feb 03, 2017 04:34 AM

It seems like we have more "stuff" going on this year. Could it relate to the opening of McCarthy Hall?

It looks like a party palace.

If that was my place when I was at KU, I'd probably get myself into trouble.

@mayjay

Especially with our current post lacking the ability to muscle in the paint.

Landen has come on and performed admirably. But he is too much of a gentleman. Wish he had a little more "street" in his play.... just like I wished that of Perry.

@time-to-rock-73 said:

AS a former basketball official - -you could call a foul EVERYTIME down the floor if you really wanted too

I'm positive that is true.

I'm sensitive about over the back calls. Mostly because it is often called when the convicted party didn't even touch the other player. It is often called just to support the rule in general.

So when I see real over the back fouls not being called, it seems doubly egregious when desiring consistency.

Vick and Josh • Feb 03, 2017 02:59 AM

Currently, our team is a rolling snowball going downhill. It continues to pick up more snow and grow.

This probably started with the first CB situation. After that, media looks to pin more on Kansas. Story targets pick up momentum. Once one story picks up traction, it is much easier to pick up traction on the subsequent stories.

If you don't understand what I mean.... just think back to the Hillary Clinton email story phenomenon. Perfect example.

Vick and Josh • Feb 03, 2017 02:50 AM

First..... news organizations get away with verbal murder. They always have, and hopefully, always will. I said "hopefully" because of the only realist alternative, that free press is silenced.

The Star is a McClatchy paper and under monster financial pressure. They are pimping out the quality of journalism just trying to stay alive.

This is the state of journalism today. Their expression of thoughts are protected by the Constitution, but their financial survival is not. A big part of what they are selling is the headlines themselves. Controversial headlines are actually more valuable today than the content in the story behind them. Controversial headlines gain more attention, harvest paid clicks, and even sells real paper newspapers. This is journalism today. I've been told that some stories exist only because magnetic headlines were developed FIRST, and the stories were done just to finish the sold goods (headlines).

Having said that... I still think there are a few old antlers on staff. They have an opportunity to "create news" and are jumping on Kansas hoping to sell more papers. You have to remember that a huge chunk of their potential customers are MU fans.

The Star has a long history of bashing Kansas. None of this is new... and probably little of this is actually news.

@HawkChamp

I researched the 2013 season and you are correct. Baylor beat us on their court.

I have some questions • Feb 02, 2017 09:57 PM

@time-to-rock-73

There are just a few cold hard facts in life. Taxes.... death.... and fans pissed at refs.

We all scream about it, too. We were all pissed off at the officiating in Morgantown.

Heck, I thought we got ripped off numerous times last night. How many times did the Baylor bigs go over Landen's back to get a rebound or tip it out? I think the refs called one, maybe two "over the backs."

If they had called all of the blatant over the backs, we would have had Baylor bigs on the ropes and we probably would have made this a blowout.

Even the announcers caught one or two of these "no calls."

!usa_today_9838078.jpg ↗

No question. Baylor is GOOD!

They took us down to the wire last night and we tried several things to slow them down but had little success.

We seemed to be fortunate that the tide had shifted our way at the end and we were able to keep our home court win streak intact.

It seems logical to think that we have almost an impossible task of winning in Waco this year. But on further examination, last night's game might have been the tougher test.

SHIFT IN PRESSURE -

This is huge. Last night, the pressure was all on US to "hold court" and defend our hopes of extending our conference streak to 13. When we go down to Waco on February 18, we might be sitting in the driver's seat. If that is the case, ALL the pressure is on Baylor to beat us.

WHAT HOME COURT ADVANTAGE? -

Guess how many times Baylor has beat us on their home court? Would you be shocked to know that they have won exactly ZERO games against us since joining the Big 12? Baylor is 0-10 against us in Waco.

KEEPING THE STREAK ALIVE -

You might think I'm talking about our 12 consecutive conference championships. No. I'm talking about our 22 game consecutive winning streak over Baylor in conference play!

IMPROVING DEPTH -

There is a very good chance our post depth will improve by the time we meet Baylor again. There is a good chance we have Carlton back. And whether we regain Carlton's services by then or not, our other backup post players, Dwight and Mitch, are bound to show considerable improvement from here on out anyways. When we add depth in our post, we give Landen a green light to play aggressive again.

BETTER TEMPO -

We proved last night that we can beat Baylor even if we let them establish the tempo. If we go down to Waco and establish a faster pace, we can easily pull away from them.

EXECUTING OVER HEIGHT -

Notice how much better our second half was last night over the first half. It seemed to take that long for our guys to get accustomed to playing against Baylor's size. Okay, we figured them out. Next time we don't have to wait until halftime to start playing aggressive against their size.

Think about what Baylor must accomplish to execute over our height?! We have the height of a mountain; a 22-game winning streak over Baylor. You could see Baylor struggle last night at the end. They had reached close to the summit, but didn't quite have what it takes to cross over it. These streaks create tough psychological barriers for teams.

Baylor has been our #1 helper over the years, helping us to our current 12 consecutive conference titles. Without their help, it is unlikely we would have made it. We've always taken two from them every year while they helped us by knocking off other opponents that challenged us for the crown.

Last.... a shout out to Ishmail Wainright! He is a great human being and we are all lucky to have him in the Big 12!

Reviewing the Baylor W • Feb 02, 2017 04:12 PM

I hope we get Carlton back. Not so much to get back his stat line. But we need his fouls and minutes on the court.

Landen is having to restrict his hustle because of the threat of picking up fouls.

Shout out to Mitch and Dwight for battling tough! We need them moving forward, too.

I hope he has to sit through those boring classes. He needs to be confronted with himself. I don't have a problem about pot. But he is on a team and he put his team at risk. Very immature.

Without knowing anything more about this, I don't think I am prejudging him by stating he is immature and needs to grow up.

One big lesson in maturing; there are CONSEQUENCES connected to actions. Do something good and something good will be the result, do something bad and... Immature youth doesn't make the connection. Clearly, Carlton hasn't made the connection either. Something like stale classes might ignite a light bulb.

KU tanking on the recruiting trail! • Feb 01, 2017 11:49 PM

@HawkChamp

Absolutely!

If we have an issue next year it could be about experience.

Vick • Feb 01, 2017 11:47 PM

Actually, the best case scenario for tonight might be that we have LL get in foul trouble and we substitute players and shift defense around to accommodate the situation. It's good practice and experience for us moving forward because we will always battle with post depth the rest of this year.

I want to see Dwight and Mitch rack up some minutes. They need to face tall, quality bigs.

If we can do all of that and still nail the "W" that sounds PERFECT to me!

KU tanking on the recruiting trail! • Feb 01, 2017 11:38 PM

@Statmachine

I think you are showing us the "worst case scenario." (or close to it)

Do you think Devonte and Svi are both gone? I don't think either show as a lottery pick. Both would be absolutely crazy to go now if they aren't showing well in the draft. And this draft is going to be stuffed with good talent.

I'm seeing the glass half full.

As of now... I think we will have: Devonte, Svi, Doke, Vick, Newman, Preston, Cunliffe, Lightfoot, Coleby, Garrett... good chance Bragg. That is 10 or 11 right there. As we know, Bill only likes to play 8.

And we are 50/50 for Trae, and I bet Bill pulls a rabbit out of his hat for at least one more quality player. Could be a transfer or whatever.

Vick • Feb 01, 2017 11:26 PM

@HawkChamp

I think Bill sees this as "Frank's team."

I think basketball mimics the culture that surrounds it.

Bill is from Oklahoma. People in the Midwest tend to be "independent minded."

Bill definitely believes in "team defense" and "team offense" but to just a point. His hardcore support for M2M defense is based most on guys being held "personally accountable." I'm not trying to say there is an extreme difference, but it just feels like he is a blended philosophy of independent responsibilities along with team responsibilities.

Zone defense is very much a dependent, team-flavored defense. I believe one of the positives of playing zone is that it may help players get into more of a team concept and it might even promote higher motivating moments as a team. I think it feels more like "team defense" over M2M, even though there has to be weak side help to some level to be successful at M2M. And, of course, a high-pressure M2M can involve double-team traps, etc.

This is a bit abstract in thinking.

I'm curious how people in here feel and think about it?

Vick • Feb 01, 2017 11:14 PM

@JayHawkFanToo

verb (used without object), conspired, conspiring.
1. to agree together, especially secretly, to do something wrong, evil, or illegal:
They conspired to kill the king.
2. to act or work together toward the same result or goal.

However... we just don't hear it in use for anything besides evil.

http://www.dictionary.com/browse/conspire ↗

Tonight's Huge Game! • Feb 01, 2017 09:23 PM

@Hawk8086

Actually... that is what scares me a bit.

I think we want to keep our emotions "close to the vest" while trying to dismantle the WVU press. I'm afraid the more emotional we are in that game, it could work against us. We don't want to be sensitive to becoming amped up because if it is the wrong kind of amping.... we are in trouble.

I think we need the mind of an engineer when beating WVU. Calculative, planned properly, schemed, steady execution. We are almost better to be a bit robotic... in other words.... play with great poise! Poise is what will beat WVU.

Vick • Feb 01, 2017 09:17 PM

"He said Frank always calls to check on him, if he goes to the mall Frank calls to see if he made it. And then again to see if he got home."

That is interesting. I don't recall reading that.

Maybe Frank is more of a leader for this team than I give him credit for!

Vick • Feb 01, 2017 09:09 PM

@JayHawkFanToo

"Isn’t a conspiracy by definition illegal? I am not sure you can have a "legal conspiracy"…if it is legal it is not a conspiracy, right?"

To "conspire" is totally legal. That is why you hear charges against a conspiracy explained with a "tail" behind it.

"...conspiracy to commit a felony"

"...conspiracy to defraud the government"

"...conspiracy to kill the President"

I believe only certain, specific conspiracies are crimes in themselves. Conspiring to kill someone (the President or anyone else) is a crime.

You can conspire to do something legal... for example... you conspire with your wife this morning to share a picnic in the nice weather today.

In the dictionary "conspire" is defined first around doing something wrong, evil or illegal. This definition is first since it is usually USED in context with something wrong, evil or illegal.

The second definition is more general.... "to act or work together toward the same result or goal."

I'm not thinking about baggage from the NBA. I'm thinking of baggage from within ISU. Sure, they still love him. But if he came back, I think they would want to pin him down for too long... they realize he may be for only a short term. They are dealing with Fred being short term now. I doubt they want to be put in that same situation in a few years.

The way to build a program is to establish success with longevity. I don't see Fred really offering that to a college team.

I don't really see him going back to ISU as a good thing for ISU.

Hilton Tragic • Feb 01, 2017 08:57 PM

@Kcmatt7

Fred is a solid coach... especially bringing NBA-style offense.

But he wouldn't be the guy I would look for to replace Bill.

We've only had 8 coaches at Kansas. We look for guys to stay a long time. I would look for someone healthier and maybe younger (depending on when Bill leaves).

At Kansas... we think about longevity (and winning).

I could be wrong... but it just looks like he hasn't been selective about his inner circle. Hang with a bad crowd and bad things happen.

He really needs our team leader/captain on his arse 24/7. From this moment forward he doesn't have a personal life.... he has a team life... so he is always with another responsible player.

I suspect that he lacks maturity and the ability to say "no" so he needs someone around, 24/7, to say no for him.

Hilton Tragic • Feb 01, 2017 07:45 PM

Gosh.... I bet the ISU fan base is in big time meltdown mode. I knew the snit would hit the fan after losing Niang. Losing Fred was the first blow... and the knockout punch was losing Niang.

Niang made all their players look better.
