Heck yeah. That’s one of the best case scenarios!!!

@drgnslayr And somehow KU got punished for Zion’s recruitment, but Duke was of course completely in the clear.

@Jhawk69 That would be a fun waste of money (that I don’t have). But I’d be hard pressed to give millions to player salaries over a building; better for posterity.

Retired Jayhawk Jerseys • May 09, 2025 10:05 PM

@Jhawk69 said in Retired Jayhawk Jerseys:

I seem to recall Bill Self saying he would advocate for Big Dave to have his jersey retired, given that he should have been the final four MOP.

The standards have been loosened. It used to be next to impossible- 3x all America or POY maybe MOP too. Now it’s consequences All America POY, MOP and not sure what else qualifies. Academic all America?

I don’t know if McCormack meets the qualifications, though he was integral to the 2022 championship. Could’ve come back for another year, that might have helped him qualify - or maybe he does? šŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļø that’s a good one.

The portal. • May 09, 2025 09:58 PM

@Jhawk69 No worries, that article doesn’t really come to that conclusion.

The portal. • May 09, 2025 07:54 PM

@BeddieKU23 Miss the days when Dick was hanging out on the wing making the net wet. Splash (mostly for the jokes if I’m being honest.)

The portal. • May 09, 2025 07:33 PM

Sarr would really help round out the roster. Would like a shooter as well to help keep teams from packing the paint.

@dylans This doesn't even take our 2020 team which probably deserves a championship into account

I try to repress that memory. It still makes me ill. In a weird way it stole a lot of the fun out of the ā€˜22 championship for me.

Jacque Vaughn... Thoughts? • May 09, 2025 05:10 PM

My basement flooded a couple weeks ago - it nearly got my Jacque Vaughn SI that’s been sitting on top of a stack of magazines since the 90s. That would’ve been a shame, but disaster averted. All I need is new carpet no sentimental attachment there. lol

Jacque Vaughn... Thoughts? • May 09, 2025 05:06 PM

Roy vs Bill

4 final fours for each. Different patterns due to different recruit patterns. Roy was all or nothing on the recruiting trail - so 2 then a 9 year gap and 2 more. Bill averages a final four every 4-5 years. - wash

2 national runner ups for Roy vs 1 for Bill. -Edge Roy

2 National Championship winners for Bill. - Off the top turnbuckle Bill Self for half of KU’s NCAA championships.

Roy won 9 conference championships. So far Bill has won a record 14 straight conference championships 17 in total. - edge Bill

Number players drafted - 15 Roy. Bill - 19 current players another 17 former players. - edge Bill

Bill’s been good for KU. I hope he regains his form quickly in this altered landscape. A shakeup in the staff may invigorate him.

@wissox said in Jacque Vaughn... Thoughts?:

@dylans Embiid, OAD, Wiggins, OAD, Chalmers 2 + national Champ, Morris both 3 years (?), Oubre OAD, Braun 3 + NC, Selden 3 years (?), Dick OAD.

Williams guys hung around enough for us to get to know them. Wish Williams guys could a made some FTs in 2003 or to me at least it's a clear cut argument in his favor.

Oh I thought you were curious who had the better nba players. At Kansas Roy probably squandered more assembled talent than Bill has.

Retired Jayhawk Jerseys • May 09, 2025 03:44 PM

Does anyone know which Jayhawks are eligible for future enshrinement?

I’d imagine Frank Mason for his consensus national player of the year.

Devonte Graham, Ochai Agbaji, and Jaylen Wilson were consensus first team all America players.

Udoka Azubuike was first team all America as well.

Also of note Adonis Jordan and Tyshawn Taylor are top 10 for assists at KU. Eric Chenowith top 5 in rebounds. Perry Ellis top 10 in scoring.

Jacque Vaughn... Thoughts? • May 09, 2025 01:51 PM

Both great coaches. What a problem to have. Well it is a problem for the next guy, expectations are sky high!!! Maybe if I go back another coach - nope Brown won a national championship in his short tenure. Gonna need someone who embraces the high expectations to fill Bill’s shoes when he decides to retire.

Jacque Vaughn... Thoughts? • May 09, 2025 01:22 PM

@nuleafjhawk But that’s all Roy won, big 8 and Big 12 championship games. I watched nearly every single single game of Roy’s and Bill’s KU tenures. I don’t remember Roy winning anything of consequence until he went to UNC. I do remember him losing to Arizona with the best basketball team I’ve seen assembled…

Now as human beings - Roy was much more approachable. He’d chat with you. I love the man. His best basketball was with UNC though.

Do you like NBA basketball? That tempo matches what you seem to prefer better. I’m ok with a defensive battle as long as there is some scoring - Virgina grind it out in the 50s and 60s is not fun for me though. Too extreme.

I agree the uptempo style is fun to watch. Kind of like passing the ball in football. But defense wins championships when combined with scoring punch.

Jacque Vaughn... Thoughts? • May 09, 2025 12:07 PM

@nuleafjhawk Maybe because you weren’t past your prime then? (Edit I am too) Roy’s guys never won anything for KU due to terrible defense, sorry you’re missing out! The last 20 years have been the best basketball the university of Kansas has ever seen. Sorry you’re just now waking up, it appears the prime years are past due to landscape shift.

If it makes you feel any better I thought it was time for Roy to leave when he did. How many years had it been since he last showed enough passion to take his jacket off at a game? He had lost his love for Kansas basketball and needed a new challenge (I doubt Roy even realized it). And yet I was still unhappy he left.

Bill is about done, but he’s making the end of career push, it’s a bit different than the middle of career lull we were getting at the end of Roy’s tenure in Lawrence. - it was the Andy Reid thing for Roy move on and grow sometimes that needs to happen. Hopefully the next coach KU hires carries the torch as well as Roy and Bill did!!!

Jacque Vaughn... Thoughts? • May 09, 2025 03:38 AM

Just by points per game Bill’s guys actually crush Roy’s. Not sure the best way to qualify it though.

Jacque Vaughn... Thoughts? • May 08, 2025 07:16 PM

@nuleafjhawk No championship without Russell Robinson. So yes there is for me.

If Roy had way better recruits the results are more lack luster. But I don’t feels that is true. Seems that bill might be the slightly better recruiter. I quit following Roy once he went back to unc. Roy sure didn’t hesitate to recruit west of the Mississippi and compete with Kansas for recruits, unlike the respect he paid UNC.

Jacque Vaughn... Thoughts? • May 08, 2025 06:31 PM

@nuleafjhawk said in Jacque Vaughn... Thoughts?:

@wissox Is that your way of asking if Roy was the better recruiter.

Impossible. Roy handcuffed himself while here. No recruits east of the Mississippi River.

@wissox Everyone was recruiting Vaughn. He was a stud. Top 10 recruit, second ranked point guard. Don’t know if Bill would have gotten him, but I’m guessing he would’ve at least made a flier.

The portal. • May 07, 2025 01:42 PM

6’8ā€ 225lb limited skill forward? The bigs room is pretty weak I’d hate to have to give him too many (any important) minutes. He’d be good as a deep bench guy for practice and such.

Norm Roberts Retires • May 06, 2025 03:58 PM

Jacque is 50. Beard 52. Will wade 42. Todd Golden 39.

Bill was 41 when KU hired him.

Former players that I would love to see coaching someone else’s team for the drama - Lagerald Vick, Branden Greene, Naadir Thorpe.

@BShark Jacque Vaughn is the only person I can think that fits that mold. I’m sure there are others, but I just have a hard time imagining him wanting to go down a level.

Norm Roberts Retires • May 06, 2025 12:00 PM

@bskeet Player retention doesn’t seem to be a thing tied to loyalty of anything but the almighty dollar. See Flory our biggest mercenary for the upcoming season, I’m sure he’ll be expecting a raise the following year regardless of who is in charge.

@dylans I think they’d win that one, I don’t see the antitrust violation there. The rest of the suits seem pretty open and shut Sherman violations.

So I can have any other job I want, but can’t go into my chosen profession of basketball?!? I think someone could argue it.

The portal. • May 05, 2025 12:25 AM

I suppose if that’s what the nba wanted they’d just change the draft age to something higher.

The portal. • May 05, 2025 12:24 AM

@FarmerJayhawk So one lawsuit to change the rule. lol the ncaa must have terrible legal advice. They always lose.

@wissox Every leaders policies lead to deaths. That’s the burden of the position.

This type of conversion is what the political section is for (we can all fall into this rabbit hole if not careful). Politics are more interesting and impactful, but also far more polarizing. Since the 70s politicians have leaned into emotional rhetoric over factual speaking points and it’s a problem for advancing the nation. Basketball conversions generally have more factual basis.

I block anyone that can’t stick to basketball on this thread because it’s supposed to be a release from that bs that’s actually impactful to our lives. Don’t care about the pope or president, here they’re just bit players.
