I guess we should just give up on him!

Don't believe anyone is saying this.

In addition to rebound, I feel KJ's path to extended playing time involves developing enough skill to potentially play the 4. Right now, he's a situational defensive player.

for sure he would help more at a 4. -Think we will be ok at the 5 with what w got and what we have coming in. - -Gonna be young and yes kind of raw but KJ hope can develop some outside shot

I sure the heck not giving up on him - -I'm fine with the way he is - he will grow and progress just like Coach does every year developing players

@jayballer67 He had 10 defensive rebounds in about 180 minutes. His defensive rebounding rate was 6%. He was sub 10% in total rebounding for the season. Bobby Pettiford outrebounded KJ on the defensive glass in 60 fewer minutes on the season.

To be a decent rebounder, those numbers should be around 20% on the defensive end and 15% total rebounding. I'm not asking for him to turn into T-Rob on glass. I'm not even asking for him to be freshman Silvio DeSousa on glass. BTW, KJ and Silvio played almost the exact same number of minutes (178 for KJ to 175 for Silvio) as freshmen and Silvio grabbed 74 total rebounds (24%) and 41 defensive rebounds (25%). Those were elite level numbers.

Perry Ellis as a senior was a bad rebounder at 11% total rebounding and 14.5% defensive rebounding rates. I'll be fine if KJ is better than that at rebounding, but 4 defensive rebounds in 90 minutes is simply not good enough in the Big 12 for someone who plays the 4 or 5 spot as their primary position.

so you just gonna toss the offensive rebounds out the window huh - - ok gotcha

@drgnslayr said in Next Year's Team Thread:

I agree with @Texas-Hawk-10 .... KJ needs to go to rebounding school. He has plenty of energy and athleticism... two great qualities needed for rebounding! He already knows how to defend at a certain level (can also improve). He needs to know more about sealing the boards and also some education as to where rebounds go. I wish Charles Barkley had a school for rebounding. But then... KJ would have to develop a bigger ass to use to clear space... lol

And I'll ask you like I just posted. How many rebounds should he have playing in less then 5 minutes a game? - -6 - -7 - -8 - -10 would that work ? - The things this kid brings to the table more then just rebounding is un deniable - when he projects more minutes he have those rebounds you talk about - nobody is gonna get I dunno what kind of numbers you are looking for in 4.8 minutes a game but you looking the wrong direction

Next Year's Team Thread • Apr 30, 2022 08:40 PM

@Texas-Hawk-10 said in Next Year's Team Thread:

@jayballer67 And if he never becomes a multidimensional player, his role will never evolve beyond what it was last season while he's at KU. You can't be a 4 or 5 at KU and expect extended minutes when you can't rebound. His rebounding is why he didn't get more opportunities against good teams because despite his defense, he was a net negative on the floor because he couldn't end other teams possessions and gave up a bunch of offensive rebounds and extra possessions to other teams.

I'll take KJ'S line any time any where when you project it out. - Pretty hard to knock some kid for not getting a double double when he is playing less then 5 minutes a game & not saying he would do that even with extended minutes - -BUT I'll bet you this he gets those minutes like other 2nd- -3rd year payers I'll bet you the farm he averages 7 .5 - -8- -9 rebounds a game . - Is KJ gonna be the new whipping boy now that David is gone ?- -Never fails -easy to pick a guy out and constantly be on his ass and yet when he is a big reason for winning THEN he gets the ATTA'A BOY'S . In his limited time he got 20 offensive rebounds -had 8 blocked shots shot 52 % from the floor- -I'll take that anytime -he will fit as a solid piece of this team quite nicely thanks..

He may never be the starting five, but I'll bet you this - I bet he will have quality minutes much more then he had this year. Every player brings different things to the floor, I guess who knows maybe he won't be the strongest player rebounding but I bet you if he isn't already he will be one of the better if not the best big we have on the team. Plus you know and I know both if you can't play defense for Bill then your gonna have a great seat to watch the game on the bench right next to Bill - -Bill loves defensive effort you can't do that - - SIT DOWN - - again why you think Bill put him in at vital times ? - because the others wasn't getting it done defensively, Coach even mentioned how KJ shut the guy down when no one else could. -I'll take him with the extended minutes ANYTIME

Next Year's Team Thread • Apr 30, 2022 08:00 PM

KJ is going to be just fine people need to R---E--L--A--X. - played small sample size minutes. - There was a reason Coach Self put him in for those minutes when he did, and that was becuase our other 5's that was end was getting their ass beat on the defensive end and their lunch ate. Others players on this team wasn't rebounding thats why the opposition was getting 3-4 shots at the rim AND they wasn't rebounding plus defending so- - have a seat. - It was KJ that put the stop on some of these guys - -his rebounding is going to be just fine

Next Year's Team Thread • Apr 30, 2022 05:18 PM

Glad to see this, I didn't think he would transfer out BUT with a mama thinking she knows whats best - -you never know. .I think KJ will just bring more be solid for us help us defend this title

And it just keeps getting better and better for Kentucky. - - Keion Brooks has entered the portal. He played in all 33 games for them last year. - -That makes him & Dontaie Alen ( they just totally screwed with this kid ) & Bryce Hopkins to enter the portal

Then they lost TY Ty to the NBA Draft - -Topping has entered the draft but maintaining this eligibility status Plus another - -Dammit I hate it when that happens to that team lol

Thing is with Hunter, I wouldn't be OVRELY concerned if he didn't come in for a visit. I think he could very easily still land here without visit. Thing about it is - -he has had a first hand look at how we run our game , he knows the team from competing against us. Has a feel for how Coach Self Coach's .

I think most of what else he needs to know could actually be done through Zoom/face call talking to the staff always has time after to really check out the Campus and such .I think if he is serious most of this can take place without visit just meet on face time and such working out details, How Coach would want to use him and such - - expectations and so on - - we shall see

Don't think that there would be a lot of interest - -not trying to sound negative , cause it's not. The guy has game , big boy , has a pretty nice stroke , smooth , moves pretty well , finish's - all very nice qualities yet you have to wonder IF we were to show some interested in someone like this- - -would his game translate to major P-5 level ? - Competition going to be a lot stiffer night in night out just wonder how he would be able to compete against other 6'9 - - 6'10 - -6-11 major P-5 big's. - I do like his game though pretty smooth shot, step away from the bucket a little open space J. -I'm sure he will find a pretty nice home

Our Big 12 Expansion • Apr 28, 2022 01:49 PM

Well read this from three different articles this morning , one from Blair Kerkoff , then another from Longhorn Wire - -Patrick Conn and then another writer.

So it looks like this upcoming School yr will be the last year of our current Big 12 status. - Looks like now that the 4 new teams will be joining and participating in 2023/24. BYU , Houston , Central Florida & Cinn
Says we will be playing with a 14 team Conference for a Couple of years - until Oklahoma & Texas leave for the SEC. Texas has their money , but is said waiting for Oklahoma to come up with theirs for their departure.

We would be playing a Division Schedule in football , BUT would not play a complete round robin in Basketball. -
-
CBS offered a projected division setup t one would have : K/State - -KU - -Iowa State - -Okla - - Okla St - - BYU - -& Cincinnati
The Other would be : - -Baylor - - TCU - - Tex Tech - - Texas - -WV - - Houston - - & Central Florida

Patrick Conn wrote off the Longhorn wire that we would have a likely 9 game Conference Schedule & 3 non Con games. - -They would also have Rotating cross Division matchups

So I guess it's all about to begin , I do not think though if these schools start next year- -I just think that Texa and Oklahoma will use their early buyout and move to join the SEC next year could be wrong but I think with these schools joining next year i think it will be enough where Texas and Oklahoma get out

@jayballer67 in-state recruiting in 2023 will pretty much be a bust. As far as portal guys go, we're touching base with so many it's hard to keep track. I do know two JuCo safeties will visit next weekend, and we had a WR from Minnesota in for a visit last weekend. Haven't heard how much of a chance we have with them, but I do know they're casting a very wide net in the portal.

2024 is probably going to be the staff's make or break season on the trail. It's another very strong local class and 2023 is scheduled to be the breakout on the field. Canady is certainly one to follow over the next 18 months.

Thanks for that. I had heard at one point must of been hot air - I had heard at one time they thought we was doing really good in the 2023 class. - What Happened ? did the staff just drop the ball at ol boy left ?

Long story, but the very very short version is Schoonover developed lots of those relationships then Lance basically fired him.

Could be some good 2022 news coming…

Thanks for sharing your input buddy.I really appreciate your opinion and thoughts on our football program , good to heat that MAYBE w might have some good happening not to long - -thanks again buddy

The only bad thing with these guys is -you know DAM WELL that all these others schools recruiting these players -like Hunter , and this kid - - they all are going to do their damnest talking crap on Ku and the possibility of post Season Ban from the NCAA next year and possible probation and saying that we won't get the type exposure they want and there being a possibility of Coach Self being suspended next year.

You know they gonna do everything they can talking crap about us and the NCAA for next season to scare these guys away from us

Ok , so sitting here just wondering and can't come up with answers ( Farmer ) I need to hear what your thinking, as your pretty in touch seem to be so buddy , what the hell is going on with our recruitment ? I'm just not seeing or hearing ANYTHING on possibles out of the portal. What gives bud , what's your train of thought ?

Does it just boil down to lack of W's on the field ? - I have heard one thing and it has to do with in State kids - -that since Schoonie left that the staff just dropped the ball and didn't stay on certain kids - -any truth t that buddy? - Is it the lack of NIL'S ? - kind of frustrating - I know if kids going in portal they have to be in by the 1st right ? - -Have you heard of anyone we sitting good with ?

I DID see where we might be in better shape for a couple of in state kids - -but they are - -24 recruits -we need some help , depth now. - - Heard we have a kid right hee in Topeka that they think who will be the # 1 ranked recruit in the State of Kansas in 24 - -BJ Canady- -likes KU been to Lawrence multiple times and is a friend of KY Thomas - see now this is a kid w need to hunt like a dog step on him - -stay on him prove sincere intrest lock him up - we have JUST GOT TO wrap these kind of kids up - - In State.

Then another 24 recruit Think his name is Jayshawn Ross - -heard we are in pretty good with him to - he is a edge. - got to land guys like these two .The one down fall that I had heard about Coach L and staff - - just not good recruiters - -once kids are there at KU then they develop with them well but it's getting them there - - What are you hearing Farmer ? -- Any kind of hope for recutis coming in?

Yeah JWill signed with an agent. But apparently you can do that now and come back if it's an NCAA certified agent? Lol. Probably gone oh well.

that hurts , & if Christan leaves gonna be interesting. - -If Christan comes back - -means a lot why ? - - CAUSE we will STILL have our Dog , our boy with some attitude , cockiness , edge - I love seeing that when you can back it up - - Christan can back it up. Christan comes back next year might be better, NO Och to defer shots to seems like he passed up a lot of shots, I dunno maybe he just felt Och needed to be THE GUY. - Well id Christan comes back he can be THE GUY- I still have serious doubts about him coming back but the ol wise one says - Oh he will be back -so we will have to see - hope so
