Doke Out First Weekend? • Mar 14, 2018 11:42 AM

Here is a site with odds of each seed level advancing to each next round based on historical tourney performance.

https://www.betfirm.com/seeds-national-championship-odds/ ↗

A statistical anomoly is that a 5 seed has never won the NC so they are listed at 0% while 6, 7 and 8 all have 3% (total %age of all the seeds at those lines).

Rankings do not determine the outcomes, is really what I think they are saying. As we well know, unfortunately.

@BShark Has to be the best 1-2 combo at wideout the Chiefs have ever had.

Really nervous to see Mahomes though. If he throws 25 ints, then it won't really matter what our weapons look like.

At least we will have good receivers to chase the intercepting DBs. Let's just hope none of our offensive players is among team leaders in tackles.

@jayballer73 Both the Baylor and Okie St games are on ESPN2.

Other broadcast info: Tonight's NCAA "first four" games are on TruTV. Same tomorrow.

The F4 this year is on TBS but they are doing the "team station" thing again. Dunno on what networks, but I assume TruTV and TNT.

Final 4 Picks • Mar 13, 2018 01:33 PM

@approxinfinity Our pods are Wichita, Pittsburgh, San Diego and Detroit. Not quite sure how 3 of these relate to the midwest?

South has 3: Tx, Tenn, and NC. East has Pitt and Detroit. West has Boise, so 1 in their region, same as us. So, half the pods are located in their regions generally. (Note: I don't accept Detroit as midwest despite our win there in the 2008 regional. It is east or the defunct mideast. You can't have a geographical term based only on the size of the country in 1820. And that is final. Although if everyone disagrees, we have 2 pods in the MW and my rant has less basis.)

Actually, not trying to dispute your comment as much as just noting how scattered lots of teams are on the first weekend even if they move closer to their regions in the second weekend. I wonder if the NCAA has ever calculated the total mileage travelled by the 64 teams for Thurs & Fri games?

Blue Blood Coaching • Mar 13, 2018 11:57 AM

@5yardfuller Great find. So, Wilt may have never done something that people basically just imagined he could do, so they adopted the FT restriction anyway. The myths built up so fear of the Stilt was great and served him well in many other ways.

A couple of takeaways from the article: Don't you miss the long, newsy and folksy discussions by those old columnists? Now, everything is condensed, columns are short and poorly edited, newsprint is scarce, much of what we read outside large cities is syndicated or adapted from elsewhere, and columnists are not given much freedom to expound as much. Many were provocative, but it is a slice from the past that I miss greatly.

And the discussion of Bill Russell is great. "The Frisco Giraffe." Discussed by KU trainer Dean Naismith.

Where we've played since 2000 • Mar 13, 2018 10:53 AM

@JayHawkFanToo In the other 3 they have to travel about 400, 500, and 700 miles. We haven't had to travel more than 300 in the same span. Much easier for fans to travel from KU fan centers than for Duke fans. But I think Duke fans are all over the east coast, so they get lots wherever they are.

But it is more interesting that Duke's 2 worst losses listed were the two 1st rd games closest to Durham. And we know that close to home (KC, Omaha) is no guarantee in the 2nd round, either.

Blue Blood Coaching • Mar 13, 2018 03:12 AM

@JayHawkFanToo Tex Winter is quoted as saying he watched Wilt do it in the Fr vs Varsity game, but sure, that is not evidence. The HS thing is a non-issue.

Blue Blood Coaching • Mar 13, 2018 02:44 AM

@JayHawkFanToo The article discusses people who said they heard about it. Wilt didn't play his freshman year and the rule was changed after that. So, if he experimented his freshman year, they could have changed the rule in response to the rumor, which is what I had heard, and what the article and the poster say.

Or perhaps the article was faked, Rules Chairman Tex Winter never said anything about seeing Wilt do it as a freshman (so the audio is fake, too), the rumors from the time (my father told me the story) were false, and it was just a coincidence.

@JayHawkFanToo Heresy. Okay, not heresy, but first the NCAA banned dunking FTs b/c you-know-who had done so in HS.

Blue Blood Coaching • Mar 13, 2018 12:03 AM

@wissox I thought about adding: having a coach with, uh, "consistent hair"; having the coolest fanbase; and (more seriously) having a player who caused a rule change; having a unique mascot that is not yet another eff-ing feline; and having the best fight song.

Blue Blood Coaching • Mar 12, 2018 09:19 PM

@Texas-Hawk-10 In those 5 appearances they won two titles. We made it 8 times in the same era (1939-1970), winning once. For the next 18 years until 1988, we still had 1 tourney title, while Indiana moved up to 5. More appearances for us, more success as measured by NCs for them.

We have been much more successful since their last title--2 for us.

I think of Indiana and UCLA as being like the Queen Mother in her last years--fading royalty deserving of respect.

Thursday 1PM CST • Mar 12, 2018 08:55 PM

@bcjayhawk Had to look that one up. ICT is not one of the intuitive airport codes. ORL works for Orlando. ICT for Wichita is like MCI for KC!

Blue Blood Coaching • Mar 12, 2018 08:24 PM

@Texas-Hawk-10 I think you are seriously understating Indiana's successful history that is not just primarily associated with B Knight. They had two HOF coaches before him. In fact, they fit pretty much every criteria I set out above except they "only" have 8 F4s. Since they won 5 championships, however, that pretty much makes up for it.

Incidentally, two other cool facts about Indiana in the Wikipedia article: glass backboards started there, and, of course, the last undefeated team (1976).

https://wikipedia.org/wiki/Indiana_Hoosiers_men's_basketball ↗

Edit: The coach who won the 2 titles before Knight was elected as a player, but his record sure looks like he would have gotten in as a coach.

Blue Blood Coaching • Mar 12, 2018 04:38 PM

Blue blood criteria (mayjay definition): Multiple titles, at least 10 F4s, at least 30 NCAA appearances, at least 15 conference titles (at least 2 before 1939), at least 15 All Americans, at least two Hall of Fame coaches, and numerous players on any All-Time Best 100 College Players.

One or more criterion can be missed if another is way beyond the minimum.

Chip! Chip! Calling Chip! • Mar 12, 2018 04:03 PM

No one, but no one, of the "experts" at TBS, CBS, CBSSports.com and NBCSports.com is picking KU to even get to the NC game, and I think there weren't any picking us to get thru either M State or Duke. I might have missed somebody, but these kids are loving trying to prove people wrong, so being the most disrespected #1 should be as much of a chip as they could ever want.

Newman- will he stay or will he go? • Mar 12, 2018 02:06 AM

@HighEliteMajor No, but that is interesting. I love Cuthbert. My theories probably don't apply to teams going through dumping and upheaval!

Lunardi has Fizzou and Silo T playing each other out West as the 8-9 game.

Can we have an Asian Regional and send them further?

KU in the MW, with Purdue, Auburn, WSU and Gonzaga. Not thrilled if Purdue gets a rematch revenge chip.

Back to HEM's question (amended) • Mar 11, 2018 03:16 AM

@kjayhawks Even if it means a coach fired now, the team likely to be in turmoil, and a program that you can't be consistently proud of and enjoy being competitive every year?

Back to HEM's question (amended) • Mar 11, 2018 03:08 AM

@kjayhawks But would you take it all, including this stuff?

Other Games Tonight • Mar 11, 2018 03:07 AM

@BShark CBS Sports Network

Back to HEM's question (amended) • Mar 11, 2018 03:05 AM

@kjayhawks The original question was no more fair--paraphrased: UConn's several championships while occasionally missing the Dance or our single championship and the Streak? Many said that the question about the records of each school could not be asked without considering the other aspects of each program. Recent events, I would say, buttress that view.

Back to HEM's question (amended) • Mar 11, 2018 02:54 AM

Would you rather have Ollie and UConn's last championship (2014) and subsequent fall into disgrace or Bill Self's KU record (albeit, no F4s and no NCAA titles) during the same time period?

How is this possible? • Mar 10, 2018 08:17 PM

@wissox Kansas has done the same thing. I think they took in a show in NY years back, and there were all those nice extras on the trip to Italy. Schools are allowed to do some level of special entertainment and restaurants on trips as a team.

Of course, Roy just liked having the team spit in the river. Oh, yay. That sounds like fun.

Bill Self offers to even up the game by coaching with one hand tied behind his back.

So you don't like Mitch? • Mar 09, 2018 09:41 PM

@truehawk93 I am pretty sure Mitch was the only player who made any mistakes or silly fouls. Except for DG throwing the ball 8 rows up, or his how many other turnovers?

Mitch did exactly what he was asked to. Expecting perfection is nuts.

Doke • Mar 09, 2018 09:35 PM

@justanotherfan You have them winning only 2 road games. This is a crazy team, but they won at AFH, at Hilton and in Morgantown. If they can win those in the B12, I think they win a few more on the road in the B10. But they could lose more home games. They could probably go anywhere from 6-12 to 11-7.

@Buster-1926 Yeah, makes you think all the Missouri meth prevalence jokes are not actually jokes when cops get sent accidentally to a random wrong address some 12 miles away and end up getting killed in a meth house owned by a fugitive and former con.

Although I bet it wasn't completely random--they probably had a tip the fugitive was there, or that it was a meth house and just screwed up which address went with which call.

@Buster-1926 Nice tribute. Thanks for the reminder of what those dedicated folks taking that job can risk.

The circumstances around his death are really bizarre. Here is a link. What struck me is he was part-time but was inspired to go full-time to replace another Clinton officer killed in the LOD.

@dylans Nice for the top teams but you would lose so much interest that way. But how do you select them with some 30 conf tourneys to deal with? No at large? Or restrict the touney by eliminating auto bids for all the lesser conferences? That will be popular among the 280 teams or so who have no realistic chance every year.
