@BShark Someone probably told him.
@KUSTEVE We all do!
@KUSTEVE Sorry, 6 seed. But we had 11 losses, so that is what sticks in the memory.
@KUSTEVE 1988
@Lulufulu Great minds think alike!

@BShark Liberace will cite a play he thinks was unfair that happened with 8 minutes left as the reason he lost. Even if they lose by 20.
Svi's Eurostep in January last year.
@dylans I have never seen refs look so irritated with each other as they did several times this game!
@nuleafjhawk No curling? That IS serious!
The OU team is known as The Laters. As in "See you Later!"
@dylans Oh, crap.

While I was reading this our good buddy Seth Greensberg said KU can win it all, but only if Dok and Devonte' stay out of foul trouble. I hope Dok can play enough to get into foul trouble.
Well, by Seth's reasoning we should win it all if Doke doesn't play.
Seems like a pretty drastic yet devious method to stop teams from putting him on the line, which has been everyone's fear here.
@wissox And if the KU coach at the time had not taken an attitude of not cooperating that had the disciplinary committee considering the death penalty due to loss of institutional control.
@BeddieKU23 One of the prices we pay for being able to watch 3 or 4 games simultaneously.
@BeddieKU23 Well, at least no commercial breaks during the first half while they announce the brackets.

@dylans Good question! I had to look it up, there's 35, so you win a national title, and well, it's an accomplishment, but not as much as in other sports.
Coincidentally, only 35 schools have won the NCAA Men's bb tournament in 79 years. 15 schools have won multiple titles totalling 59, and 20 have won 1.

The biggest problem with the academies (other than it messes with MY college basketball!!!) is the kids that washout have nowhere to go. No degree. No work contacts. Just basketball.
Maybe they should add college funding (to a public in-state school or something) when the career is over to make it a good alternative. Add more for each year in the academy, with prep classes for them, too. The union could even fund part of it.
@JayHawkFanToo Cole surely is screwing up that <12 minute avg:
10.5 mins, 9th season! Nice stats you found, btw.
@JayHawkFanToo If they have been "developing" them for 1 to 3 years at low salaries, and simply cut the ones without potential, they don't waste the rookie-3 year salaries on guys who aren't going to make it. Almost like starting everyone as a second or third year player but on reduced first year salaries because they are already essentially "captives" of a lower salary rate system.
And good players who might otherwise go to college and enter the big-buck oppty of the draft might feel they have to go the "alphabet minor league" route rather than losing their chance to get pro training or risk injury.
@BeddieKU23 Then it should really hurt us to know that Shaka also managed to beat Wich State in the tourney the year after he beat us....

Fascinating profile, and recollections from his AAU coach of 8 years and from one of the Program's military trainers who came to KU before DG's first season.
@BeddieKU23 Shoot, I was enjoying thinking the ACC's organization was even stupider than I had thought!
@BShark We are always saying Shaka did nothing but beat KU but that really isn't true. He actually had a typical winning mid-major career for a coach going up to P5.
He had a .744 record at VCU, which included their move into the Atlantic 10. Although he didn't win any regular season championships, he did win 2 of six conference postseason tourneys, getting into the Dance when they might not have been invited as an at-large. First year they won the Not Invited to Even the Not Invited Tournament (CBI) (aside: a best of 3 championship series--don't we wish the other tourney would do this?). He also had a 10-10 record against ranked teams, not really very shabby for a mid-major.
I am not saying that Shaka is great by any means, but he was considered a success at VCU even without the KU game. People need to let go of the Shaka thing. Yes, it was his career highlight, and yes, he made the mistake of referring to it once a few years ago. Wow, does our scorned fanbase hold grudges!
@BeddieKU23 Has the Great Baller Idiot Shoe Family considered an exclusive endorsement/equipment/ sponsorship deal with Ball State? How could they miss this?
@BeddieKU23 How can teams in the same conference not play at all in bb? That is just stupid. Once makes a little sense, zero times is nuts.
@JayHawkFanToo Average career in the NBA will surprise you: only half of what you are assuming!
The goal of acdemies would be solely to undermine lengthy careers (and thus reduce the most expensive salaries) by developing players early enough to start contributing when they actually go into the "majors." I.e., change the ratio to more 1st, 2nd, and 3rd year players, who will be much cheaper coming out of an academy system than the current draft with guaranteed 1st round contracts. Kids going in really early will lose major leverage.
This can only hurt the established players. The union will not likely agree unless the system allows for free movement out of those academies.
@Kcmatt7 Sure. They can do other things to solve a variety of problems, too.
My suggestion was just for how the NCAA can stave off some of the developmental talent raiding: make college basketball inclusive of kids who want to explore professional options rather than kicking them out for taking a chance on the draft.
The simplest solution is to let kids enter the draft or be drafted and come back to school if they don't sign.
@approxinfinity Oops! Not Beard! Fixed it.

Honestly it’s the coach that is the face of the bball program. That’s part of the reason he’s paid so well, brand recognition generated by success. Roy = UNC, Coach K = Duke Boeheim = ‘Cuse. Etc. Players are more the flavor of the month, @kjayhawks didn’t even mention Mario!
Or Raef, merely all conference for 3 years (first time was end of the Big Eight), and the Big 12 POY 2 years in a row, as well as 2 years consensus 1st team All American.
How soon we forget.
HCBS will soon get a contract extension, too, with a modification giving him $25K for beating O State in Swampwater.
@wissox They might be expecting DG to be a consensus All American.
@KUSTEVE One more and we are in the E8, and it is always smooth sailing from there.
@KUSTEVE Topeka YMCA?
@Hawk8086 I have been trying to figure out who we DO want!
@JayHawkFanToo I think his point was casual fans might click on the first name they recognize. A better way of doing these would be to randomize the order for each new visitor.
@JayHawkFanToo @BShark That Jonathan Swift guy, he was such a good author with Gulliver's Travels. Then he really lost it when he suggested that the Irish famine could be solved if they just would eat their children ....
Satirical humor is often painful. If you are only disgusted by what he says and not by why, you aren't getting it.
I finally looked at the box score. Two numbers stood out. Bad stat: 1 assist in a total of 120 minutes by all the guards not named Graham. Nice stat: Only one turnover in 51 mins by the subs. (Of course, they might not have had much chance to commit any since the starters were committing 16.)
Well, I see our fanbase is taking the loss in a relatively meaningless game with the usual good humor and keeping our season in perspective!
@wissox It is the difference between hope for more, but tempered with realistic subjective expectations, versus hope that says you will feel let down if the team doesn't fulfill your hopes.
As I said in my taking you to task, it is a difference in how you expect you will look back on this team. If we win it all, everyone will be happy and proud. But if we don't, some of us anticipate that we will still be satisfied with the season because of the huge obstacles KU overcame. Others, as we have seen, will call it "crapping out" because they will be satisfied by nothing less than a F4 or NC.
I was just reacting to your tone of putting down the former group as if they won't be cheering KU in the post-season when you really know we will. And I told you the negative tone seemed unusual for you.
I think both types of hopes are fair to have, and neither group should feel superior to the other. I personally think the people who get angry at the team for flaming out early are losing something by not appreciating the positives and focusing on the negative, but people all have their own views of what it takes to make them happy.
@KUSTEVE I am sure HCBS agrees with us but he won't tell anyone and might make a different decision to avoid looking like he was listening to us.
@FarmerJayhawk You and I are in the same frame of mind, but I think he could start.
@BShark Don't forget Garrett averaged a double double both junior and senior years in HS. Over 17 pts and over 10 assists both years. With Devontae taking only a few minutes off Garrett has not played it so much, and Self has plugged him in wherever, averaging 19 mpg as a wing or SF, while increasingly bringing the ball up. But next year I think he gets 25 or 30, with 20 mpg just at the point shared with Moore. He looks so good dribbling, makes <2 TOs per 40 mins, and we have seen how he can drive. As this scrawny guy gets stronger, I think he will really shine. Opponents will have to plan for defending both a 6' PG and a 6'5" PG.
I think Garrett will play a lot of PG. Where else would he play with all the talent in the other spots?

I've only been right about that twice since 1988.....
Correct twice in 30 years... So, for a few weeks, your signature becomes:
"Looking to improve that 6.7% prediction record this year."
Yay, verily, yay!
@wissox More importantly, did you lead the crowd in the Rock Chalk chant?
@wissox Good PR! Did he ever see your hat?
@approxinfinity Self knows a few of those guys and how good they are!
