The Big 12 and a bowl game in Mexico. • Jun 08, 2023 05:54 PM

So, who the f**k wants to go to a bowl game in Mexico!!??

The Big 12 has lost its mind.

PGA/LIV golf ... something • Jun 07, 2023 07:00 PM

Joke I heard today (apologies in advance):

PGA gets holes 1, 8, 10 and 12 and 18.
Saudis get 9, 11

PGA/LIV golf ... something • Jun 06, 2023 10:06 PM

Yup, agreed on those points. They asked Rory to step up, and he did. To his detriment, he admitted. Was taking away time from his actual game, and practice.

Effed.

I just don't understand this "merger" at all. They should have let the Saudis run wild for a year or two, then realized they had nothing to show for it.

PGA/LIV golf ... something • Jun 06, 2023 09:14 PM

Jeebus. I honestly have zero clue what this little joint venture between the PGA and LIV means yet.

But, at the outset, it sure seems like the PGA Tour is now in cahoots with the Saudis as $$$ backers? Eff if i can tell. If so, WHY???

Whether some new tour, old tour or merger happens, no clue. confusing story below.

I watched a few games of the U20 US team. They just got knocked out yesterday by Uruguay. I'm always surprised at how aggressive the U20 and under games can be. dudes wiping each other out all over the place, recklessly lots of times. And the refs let a lot of it go! ha. must be youthful exuberance!

Looks like the goalkeeper is a Chelsea signee. A few other entertaining guys to watch.

I'm out on Hopkins. You don't give 30-year old WRs expensive and long contracts. We just won the Superbowl with a pretty mediocre set of WRs. Roll with what you've got.

Yea, but this crew is even more mediocre than last year’s group. I’m with ya on the money aspect though.

Udeh was bad, no offensive game at all. He couldn't beat out 6'5'' KJ Adams for the spot. Mentioned this in the other thread but I think we will miss Zuby more down the line than Udeh. Could be wrong on this obviously.

I think Parker's stat line will be in line with one of Mitch's better seasons* which is fine. I'm going off watching him play, not what Bill is saying.

*So around 4pts/3rebs a game on 10-12 minutes.

Zuby was another tweener. Needed a few more inches to be a solid C prospect IMO.

An ugly topic: Bill Self’s health • May 31, 2023 04:48 PM

Ha, yea this post took a different direction than I thought.

When I started it I thought it could take a few directions or so: how this could affect Bill’s thinking in regard to earlier retirement, and how it could affect his recruiting strategy. Go go go! And maybe people would be steamed that he kept his first surgery secret.

Also, was wondering if others thought his health would be a red flag for potential recruits. I thought it would be.

Generic soccer thread • May 29, 2023 12:56 AM

Everton seems to escape with regularity! They should do a little offseason upgrading to avoid next year's regulation zone.

Generic soccer thread • May 28, 2023 05:38 PM

Well it’s official. Leicester, Leeds and Southampton are relegated.

It will be interesting to see where all the US players end up this summer.

Pulisic rumors are all over the place. I’d love it if he could remain in the EPL. Much easier to watch and follow his career. Same with McKennie and Adams. Both are quality players. Aaronsen I don’t think much of.

Summer drama!

An ugly topic: Bill Self’s health • May 27, 2023 05:12 PM

he will learn very quickly once the season begins how he feels in the stressful times. I hope it’s way better!

Freaks me out a bit thinking about him on the sidelines to be honest.

I thought his health would negatively affect recruiting, but so far seems the opposite.

An ugly topic: Bill Self’s health • May 26, 2023 05:19 PM

Ugh, seems like Self had an earlier heart surgery that he didn’t disclose. Aortic valve replacement. Then later on he had his stent (s) put in.

Apparently the aortic surgery shortens his life span by about a decade (I’m no expert, but read a bit about it after hearing the news).

This is all very scary to hear!

So, who knows what he’s thinking, but I can only guess that he plans on retiring from coaching sooner than he previously did?

Anyway, thought this was worth discussing.

Another update! Tex predicted this earlier in the thread. came true. I wouldn't be surprised if he used Morris as our sixth man/spark plug, and put Elmarko in the lineup, surrounded by experience.

STARTING FIVE

G- Harris

G- Morris

F- McCullar

F- KJ Adams (would prefer to see a shooting option here, but likely not happening with Self)

C- Dickinson

Bench

G- Jackson

G- Timberlake

F- Marcus Adams

Deep Bench

G- Johnson

G- McDowell

F- Braun

@dylans said in Off-season starting lineup ever changing thread:

McCullar is a class act. I don’t know if he balances out some of the character issues on the team, but he goes a long way towards bringing me back in the fold. I’m probably in the minority, but I’d rather take a moderately less talented guy with sterling character over the stereotypical a-hole blue chipper.

I do think you can win a championship with Kevin playing 35 minutes a game.

Hard to disagree. Seems like a strong character guy.

Bench (Rotation level minutes)

G- Johnson

G- McDowell

F- Braun

A rotation quality 5 should be the final piece to this puzzle.

Ugh, I am likely the only one feeling this way, but with Kevin back that is an ugly ass, non shooting starting five. Dislike. Self has brought us back to the stone age of defensive stalwarts.

We desperately need a more modern approach to that lineup.

How many KU games did you watch last year? You wouldn't be saying that if you watched Kevin play.

Ha. Watched em all Jethro, like i've done basically since the 80s. Last year was last year. We have basically a new team this year, and we need different skills.

I was hoping for a true, volume shooter to help space the floor, give us a chance at making some 3s next year. that's all. Kevin is not that guy, but brings other skills. i appreciate his skills on defense, but he's not a good fit for this team offensively IMO. that's all.

@rockchalkjayhawk nope, all the same rules apply. Academics and Compliance are buried in transcript evals right now to make sure enough credits transfer for the recruit to be immediately eligible. For example, if an athlete takes a junior/senior level course at another school and it only transfers as a 300 level to KU, could make the athlete not eligible since they may not have enough credits to have made degree progress. Sometimes if you read “School X is no longer in the picture for Player Y” that can be the reason.

Thanks for the scoop, @FarmerJayhawk .

This portal stuff i'm sure is making it challenging and adding staff to all sports compliance staffs.

As it turns out there are indeed academic requirements for student athletes. Shocker to many that the money you spend on tickets and merch go to specialized counselors and other staff that guide athletes in all sports toward graduation, and that they graduate at a higher rate than other students. More at 10.

So what ever happened to all the rules and regs about players having to be on course to graduate, take x amount of classes, etc., for the team to be in good standing?

I'm recalling issues from the past when guys stayed for a year and left?

Ha. We should be able to co-manage Chelsea and make it work with all that talent!

Generic soccer thread • May 21, 2023 05:59 PM

Ahhh, stupid Leeds United. So disappointing.

They actually held a 1-0 lead in the first half. Needing a win to not be relegated, you’d think they’d put some effort into defending that lead, right? No. It’s Leeds.

So, looks like I’ll need a new EPL team to root for next season. I’m assuming Pulisic will be gone from Chelsea. Fulham here I come?

NBA Entrants & Returnees • May 19, 2023 11:36 PM

Lots of positives if McCullar comes back (which i don't see happening), and a few negatives...shooting. We can't have a lineup with like next to zero proven shooters. HD will take shots of course, but he'll not take the majority in Self's system. It would be an offensively challenged starting 5.

Gradey Dick • May 19, 2023 06:49 PM

Ha. I found this draft evaluation of Gradey funny, and the opposite of what i saw this year.

This is by no means a knock on Gradey. We all love us some Gradey. No ill will intended!

"He’s a fluid athlete who really knows how to move without the ball and find room for his shot."

I thought that was actually where he needs to grow the most: moving without the ball to find his shot.

Generic soccer thread • May 13, 2023 11:57 PM

Well, Leeds, my recent favorite EPL team to watch, is looking at the bottom three with two games to go.

That sucks! I'd assume that all the American players would have to find new teams if they are demoted? Aaronson, McKennie and Adams.

If that's the case, assuming Pulisic is also moved in the offseason, there will be pretty much one EPL team with a few US guys -- Fulham with Ream and Jedi.

Love me some EPL, but it's much more enjoyable to watch with some hometown guys.

Well, that lock of getting MM was a bit off the mark!
So, just like going into last year, i have concerns about 3 pt shooting with this roster.

Back to this lineup:

Starters

G- Dajuan Harris

G- Arterio Morris

F- Nicolas Timberlake (it's all i can do to NOT call him Justin!)

F- KJ Adams (somebody has to play here)

C- Hunter Dickinson (better not be a freaking bust!)

Rotation players

G - Elmarko Jackson

Wing - Marcus Adams Jr.

Needed: A backup big

Deep Bench (we'll see if they are deep, or less deep)

G- Chris Johnson

G- Jamari McDowell

KJ Adams Discussion • May 12, 2023 04:40 PM

@Bosthawk said in KJ Adams Discussion:

Bill Self absolutely loves KJ. That’s the number one consideration here. We all know that when Self loves a guy, he will be in the floor and In The rotation consistently…. KJ will do whatever he is asked, including sitting a lot more if that’s what’s needed.

I agree that Bill loves him some KJ. Not sure I agree that KJ will do as asked. Weren’t there rumblings from him early on that he wasn’t pleased with his playing time, and was considering moving on?

Bye Bye Ernest • May 11, 2023 05:04 PM

Oh man. Sad to hear this in so many ways.

Both seemed to be in berserker mode on the court, but I thought both Zuby and Ernest had great potential. How often are bigs amazing in their first year?

This new portal / NIL world is difficult for us consumers to adjust to. Is it sustainable year after year?

I can’t blame Self for wanting to rework the roster. It wasn’t ideal last season, but I was at least pleased with the long term bigs we had, or thought we had.

I know it's not likely to happen, but it'd still argue that KJ needs to come off the bench. By the looks of Self's offseason take charge attitude, I think he's ready to move on from KJ as a starter.

Starters:

G- Harris

G- Morris

F- Timberlake

F- Mgbako

C- Dickinson

Rotation players

G- Jackson

wing/big - KJ

F- Marcus Adams

F- Udeh

Deep Bench

G- Johnson

G- McDowell

KJ Adams Discussion • May 09, 2023 06:44 PM

I like KJ. Who doesn't?

But, Self is showing his cards here -- bringing in pretty much a brand new team -- and going ALL IN on winning.

So, my guess is that KJ's feelings will be hurt a bit next year as Bill will do what he wants to win -- which may include less time on the floor for KJ.

I'm perfectly fine with that if the newer players fit the mold of what he's looking to do next year -- which generally looks like Harris, three shooters/slashers and Dickinson.

We'll see. I'm along for the ride.

Hunter Dickenson is a Jayhawk • May 07, 2023 03:50 AM

@Bosthawk said in Hunter Dickenson is a Jayhawk:

Yes- looks like the new normal is that top programs like KU can cherry pick seasoned and more or less proven guys from other programs, by odds mostly lesser ones, who want to play for a blue blood and want to cash in on a lucrative NIL deal that we can easily afford. The rich get richer as always, But now quicker.

So, the big question I have is, is recruiting now much less critical? This really changes the whole process. We all loved the guys who played 4 years and grew with the program into very good players. I love senior nights… now most seniors are gonna be 1 or 2 year transfers who don’t have as much of a connection to the school as we used to have. Bummer.
If we recruit really good players, and as freshman they understandably don’t get a lot of playing time because we always have a fresh crop of experienced transfers, they will leave. One and done in a different way

The Burger Boys have to go somewhere. I can see a future where different schools have different recruiting strategies. one will load up on freshman McD's studs, the others will focus on the Portal.

I can see the NCAA changing the portal rules and regs pretty quickly though. So, it would not surprise me a bit if they backed off this insanity.
